Just wanted to put this out there- if you have PERSISTENT anterior rib pain around the false ribs (8-10) and along the dermatomes (the sides of your ribcage, below the armpit) it could be slipping rib syndrome, and you do NOT need to be “hit by a truck” for it to happen. Hypermobility, bouts of coughing, direct or indirect trauma, and pregnancy are all causes.
It is not as rare as it’s made out to be, and the first surgeon to discover it over a century ago even said that in his paper.

I think it is important to note here that the term slipped rib is not necessarily the same as slipping ribs syndrome. While SRS is fairly rare it does not necessarily need a Mack truck of force to happen.

I believe I have costochondritis. About 4 years ago I had a bad snowboarding accident bruising two ribs and pinching a nerve in my back. I have been to 3 chiropractors before finally one took an X-ray and figured out I had scoliosis and had about 4-5 ribs out of place. The adjustments were a game changer. I did PT and adjustments for about a year. I workout 4-5 times a week and I am extremely active. My chiropractor said I had a really Fuc… up back and said I had SRS (slipping rib syndrome). Being active helped, but still I would have 2-3 ribs come out every week. I was tired of paying for it and am now married to foam roller and stretch often. The real problem has been very obvious to everyone around me I have a deep cough it feels like I’m coughing up mucus. Also after any run or long strenuous activity I feel sharp pain in my chest just under rib 7 almost impossible to push through and my lungs feel like there on fire. Any info would be helpful.
    Thanks
    Caden

Hi Doc--- do you any have recommendation for any DCs in los angeles or OC area? maybe colleagues you went to school with or someone you might know from professional connections. There are so many "crack houses" around here and it is hard to know from websites which practitioners are legit and have an anatomical basis for the adjustments they do and have a real plan of care other than cracking everything indescriminately. I love your approach and your clear , eloquent explanation and patient cases. truly amazing channel I've learned a lot. Wish I lived in brooklyn. So I have been going through this for about 9 months. I have had every test known to man ran to make sure I had no GI issue or heart issue all clean. I’m a RN as well. I have days of crippling pain along the sides of my chest plate that spreads down to my xiphoid process and radiates lateral to that. I have soreness in my back, but chest pain is much worse. This all started after losing 40lbs on a Bowflex Max trainer that is a Stair Climber/ Elliptical combo machine. I also drive all day every day for work. So I think the combo of the two may have caused this. The thing that scares me the most is the secondary symptoms. Intense anxiety at times, heart palpitations, dizziness, lightheadedness, poor appetite, elevated HR and BP. Only thing that makes it 100% relax is my recliner with a heating pad on my back. I read with Costo it messes with your Vagal nerves. I have been seeing a chiropractor, doing laser therapy, massage therapist, doing stretches, and have PSO Spine Massager and Back Pod. I’m still having a hard time getting over this. It’s improved, but I still have really bad days. Do you think I have the right diagnosis and how long does this last it’s miserable?

Hi Doctor. I'm 60 and have sporadic bouts of pain on my left side in rib cage. At least 10 years ago I was leaning over a chain link fence to pick up something on the other side and I slipped down on to the top of the fencing. I felt a weird sensation on my left side between my ribs. I got off the fence and just rested until I felt ok. About 5 minutes later I mowed the lawn. The next day it really hurt, but it eventually felt less painful after a few days. Every so often I get pain in that area, but it eventually recedes. I've learned to live with it because I'm uninsured and I have thousands in medical bills already that is stressing me out.
How can I tell if this is Costochondritis or a slipping rib? Thank you

Should I try to strengthen my back or core? Both? To keep it from slipping also while getting regular adjustments?

I’m 40 years old. My family and I went to my father in law’s company picnic that was held at a theme park. My wife and I rode a wooden roller coaster and I was sitting on the right seat. During the ride the roller coaster bank right and my whole body went to the left hitting my wifes shoulder buckle. I heard a pop. And after the ride was over I left rib was really hurting. When I took a deep breath I hurts. After 2 days I felt fine, but still a little sore. After that though when I was back at work I moved a certain way and heard the pop again and I’m now having a lot of pain. Just clearing my throat it hurts and taking a deep breath hurts my chest. I may need to go to the ER. I’m holding off on going since my co pay is $500. I know I don’t have to pay it right away, but I would still need to pay it either way.

so since I was a child I've always had the pain in the middle of my chest/ ribs at the front, I can feel and hear it cracking and crunching like cartilage cracking when I move my shoulders stretching them back and forwards, this is accompanied by the pain I have had for nearly 38 years. I also have chronic pain in my shoulder blade area meaning it comes and goes but when it comes I have no option but to be off work as it immobilizes me. when I was a kid I was taken to hospital and they said the middle of my rib cage (sternum?) could be infected and I would "grow out of it" well 30 years later and its still here. what can I do to get some help or relief.

After the 2nd day of discovering this pain, I started having palpitation and occasionally high bp issues, but i don’t feel any pain during palpitations episode. done all the heart related tests, chest X-ray and all came fine. I noticed an extremely mild pain in what I would call my left pectoral area when I was pumping shampoo. That was two months ago. I constantly check for breast lumps because I am scared to death. It recently got a bit worse after aerobic workouts, where I would bend to stretch and gravity would cause pain. Also rolling my shoulders for stretching hurts that area. Now my shoulder blades also feel tight. As far as chest goes its still the far left side. I think me feeling around for lumps actually aggravated it, and possibly made it worse. I have a doctors appointment this week.

When first diagnosed with costochronditis I firstly when to emergency twice, thinking (as most do) it was heart attack. My naturalpathic doctor told me what it was, after a battery of tests. I was relieved to hear my heart tests came back normal. He also said it was related to the arthritis. It has been bad lately, moving into both shoulders and jaw…deep breathing worsens symptoms. I’m 61, will this last forever? I’ve tried different exercises, but will pop up for no apparent reason. Seems worse when wet.

    Hello Dr David Kulla,
I believe I have some issues with my ribs, but my doctors say that it's costochrondritis. I had a bad fall on the left side of my rib cage and was very winded after I made contact. I've been dealing with this for 2 years.
If I stand in a somewhat slouched position and try to touch my chest with my chin, I experience a sharp pain in the centre of my chest.
Also, if turn/twist to the left side (where I fell) it feels significantly tight, and in normal life if I sit up after sleeping, I feel a tear like pain where my sternum is, I also click it every morning.
Asides from the information above, I feel very sore and tender under my arm pit if I was to touch it / or put force, the same goes for the centre of my chest.
Every now and then I feel a sharp pain from the left and right pectorals and sometimes some pain and aching in my back in-between the shoulder blades.
I have tried the back pod and other things like tennis balls, but still no improvement.
What do you say as an expert in this field?
    Thanks a lot,
    Tommy

I suffered costocondritis severely in december of 2022 after a bad bout of coughing. The whole rid cage went into a spasm. Five months on l am still getting some tightness on the lower rib cage of the sternum. Did have a sports massage a week and a half ago which seemed to free up some of the i tercostal tightness. I saw a physiotherapist on tuesday and he gave me some stertching exercise to do. Day three and it seems to make the rib cage feel tighter rather than looser is that normal as if the rib is pulling on the lower sternum. Is it time to get adjusted by a chiroprationer as chiropractioners are not used by the nhs in the uk and most physical therapists are pretty useless in my experience.

These conditions are mostly caused by UCTD, especially when there was no blunt force trauma involved. Repeated adjustments are highly likely to make the mobility worse. I’d like to see this doctor become knowledgeable in immobilization following adjustment but that means no more return visits. No Mack truck required, aggressive chiropractics can easily cause it.

Hi man you seem knowledgeable about this , would you care to elaborate on how you would approach this? I’ve had this for 11 years now, always feels better for a couple of days but it always comes back … I feel like strengthening my lats in a stretched position ( kind of like when using an ab wheel) works but only after really digging a lacrosse ball into my rib joint at the back ( where I feel pain) . At some point I test rotating my torso on the painful side and if the pain is 80% gone , I start working my lat in a stretched position , and try strengthening it isometrically. This has seemed to work best for me, O’ve been doing this for the past week now .

If it feels like constant pressure mainly when you sit or sit in a car and you have upper back pain, go to the ER, rule it out. Rule out heart, rule out GERD. Then follow up with your pcp. The only thing with costochondritis is they can’t test for it. Even a chest X-ray won’t. But get a chest X ray to rule anything out. Then, do costo yoga/stretches. If you can, take turmeric, it helps fight the inflammation.

Cqn you have broken cartilage? When i pull my shoulder and scapula back the bulge around 7-8 rib goes back in. Ijust discovered this after getting an MRI FOR shoulder impingement and bicep tear. Four years of agony. They kept saying Costochondritis but it just hasnt add up to me. Especially after a very rude pain management guy told me he could see it on one of my thoratic MRIs. No way...the only thing. As soon as I vacuum, bend forward at the waist... it comes out again. I found this article, so i tried the pulling my shoulder down and back pulling the scapula down, first time in four years. Hurts like freaking hell

I believe I have it also. None of my docs know anything about it. I went to ER twice thinking I was suffocating or having heart attack, I have AFIB. I had the back pain and pain right under my breast on left side. Felt like an iron band all along my diaphram. I kept saying this but they never picked up on it. Heard about CostoChondritis quite by accident. I think it started with an upper respiratory virus which caused horrendous coughing. Then after that the pain and unable to take a deep breath on lying down at night, so off to the ER at night! Heart rate was too high as a result of all this so they focused on that, never had any diagnosis or treatment for the cartledge. Doing your exercises and bought the cold laser. On anti inflammatory. Thx

Went to the ER they thought I was having a MI, after all test done there and further testing days later they said it was "only inflammation of the cartilage between my bones." That was 8-9 years ago, It hasn't stopped yet.

I’ve had costo and fibro for years. They wax and wane. I’m 73. Lately my costo is so bad. It’s like a cascade of symptoms..Fibro causes costo..hand in hand. When the costo is bad,,of course my upper breastbone is sore, painful, and if I press it, it still hurts when I stop pressing. I’ve been to a rheumatologist, chiropractor, cardiologist, had my heart totally checked… all negative. When the costo gets bad I feel breathless and it really scares me. This has always happened to me. When it subsides, the breathlessness subsides. I can feel the inflammation in my upper breastbone at the top. This is really affecting my quality of,life. Do any of your costo patients mention that breathless feeling when it’s really bad.? Can you please explain to me why it does that. I thank you in advance….I wish I lived near you, but I’m in Georgia…thanks bon
