Unfortunately that isn't the case anymore. Everyone is waking up to the Celica, they're buying it/crashing it or keeping it stock to sell as an investment into the future.

    Thank you for your very comprehensive review. You might be interested to know that not only are these great cars for young folks, but this 76-yr-old woman finds them utterly charming and sporty enough looking for my needs. My 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 with 296K miles is still purring like a kitten BECAUSE I HAVE TAKEN GOOD CARE OF IT, and I plan to do the same with the 2001 Celie GT I'm picking up tomorrow. One owner, meticulously taken care of, and it has only 33,000 miles on it -- for $2,500 (this is on the West Coast). I'm so excited! Maybe I'll see you on the highway, young man. I'll be the little old lady wearing the purple hat and scarf and a huge grin on my face as I'm passing you 😉I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. Live long and prosper!

    7th gen 2000 GT, 2ZZ-GE w/ 6 speed swap, 1ZZ baffled oil pan, Exedy clutch, K&N short ram intake, MWR Stage 2 cams, Apexi standalone ECU with a decent MWR tune, Innova axle back and MWR mid pipe, rear disc swap, Tein springs 1.5 inch, energy suspension urethane bushings all around, GT-S wheels, Megan Racing strut tower braces front and rear.
    Never had a misfire issue in either the original or swap engine. The problem with oil burning was in the 2000 to 2002 1ZZ in the GT models. The oil control rings would get caked up because of insufficient drainage. Toyota fixed it by putting more drain holes in the piston oil grooves in the later models.
    What I have isn't the fastest car on the streets by far but it's faster than stock GT-S and it will certainly leave the straight line boys in the dust in the twistys.

    I had an 03 GTS and even for being automatic it was a fun car. Changing the oil in the 2zz regularly is definitely a must do. The trans seized on me, replaced it and never had another issue. As long as you take care of it and don't abuse it too much it'll last a long time. Kinda regret selling mine but it is what it is.

    Usually the missfire is due to a sticky valve, its a known problem of this engine but its a cheap repair. Also the interesting fact is that is that the 142hp engine is as jumpy as the 192 till like 6000rpm. Also the 142 is way more reliable, its good to know

    • @arcanevoid9199
      @arcanevoid9199 Рік тому +2

      thats not really true, a 2zz with no lift would still be faster than a 1zz. also the having 6 shorter gears also makes quite a difference, and the 140 isnt more reliable

    • @arcanevoid9199

      @@cristianseminario7899 i mean it would, a 2zz with no lift still makes more power than a 1zz. and europe is the only market that got 6 speed 1zz celicas, so not really a good point. 2zz doesnt burn oil at all compared to 1zz, lift bolts is a non issue as they have been fixed by toyota and dont cause any damage when broken. oil pump and oil pan are not great on both engines, stop trying to defend the 1zz. its just a boring economy engine

    • @DimoS...
      @DimoS... Рік тому

      1zzfe had oil burn problems before 2003
      the 2zzge is very reliable and those who had problems had 1st because they were running at turns above 1.1g of lateral pressure and as you know because it has no baffles the oil pan is starved of oil and break and 2nd the models before 2003 had problems with the gear selector resulting in 4th instead of putting in 5th, it went into 3rd and at 10,000+ rpm the valves stuck
      it's a very reliable engine, just if you're a cannibal and you want to join the faithful, it needs another oil pan, Toyota didn't release this engine for racing, and despite that, with an oil pan, it manages and lasts well even there! I have also seen many big turbo gtx2867 with 350-400hp with 100% stock engine internals and some other factory ones with over 350,000 km.

Its an amazing car to learn the basics of cornering and shifting, the chasis and weight make it very nimble. It was the 192hp .... altho I knew it could've done another 100.000km easily, I passed on it anyways cause of the hp's. For a first car, it felt a bit excessive 😂 ... plus, I had my mind set on the Mazda 3.. 2 liter. I got my Mazda for €500 with half the km's on the clock than the Celica. I still like the Celica and I keep eyeing them. Seeing them modified like this, make them look better and a lot of fun to drive. see, the thing about the 7th gen, is it's built in a way that you can only appreciate if you A) know what you're doing, and B) know what you want. it's not a drag car and the potential for that is minimal overall, unless you wanna go FWD only, then it's got something to say. as a track going car, straight power is not the most important thing. i find that the 7th gen has so much potential for the track but it's gimped by just a couple little things from the factory. 1) it's cylinder liners like to wear from cold starts and not letting it get up to temps. 2) oil pump, IYKYK. 3) the 2ZZ and 1ZZ COULD have superchargers, from lotus and TRD respectively. the only issue for the celica in not having those options is that they couldn't somehow fit it under the hood. they honestly could have done a turbo 1ZZ from the factory and made it compete with the GTI of it's time, though the GTS does that already. (im arguing the 2ZZ was redundant and over-engineered) 4) the oil pan from the 2ZZ had no baffling, but the 1ZZ did for some reason.
    these few things are what i think really puts it down. not the FWD thing, not the power from factory, but toyota's almost desire for NOT adding power. they almost didn't WANT you to. all in all, stock for stock on a track, a mk7 celica GTS vs the other FWD 'performance' cars like the GTI or civic, it was highly competitive. people often thought it took itself too seriously, not oversteering like the MR2 and not understeering like the GT4 used to. would it have been nice if there WAS a GT4 version with forced induction? yes. was it necessary... sadly for sales it'd probably have saved the car another generation, but that's aside the point. this was a real good car for performance on a track. like, i have another MK7, but a VW GTI 7.5. stock for stock, i could put down very similar times in the Celica GTS compared to the GTI. it was lighter with a lower center of gravity, the car just went.
    all in all, the car was good.

    • @arcanevoid9199
      @arcanevoid9199 Рік тому

      1 is a non issue, any engine is not going to like being beat on when cold and have wear from cold starts. not sure how the 2zz was redundant or over-engineered, once of the most advanced engines for its time. 1zz oil pan doesnt have baffling, it has the windage trays on the pan instead of on the engine like the 2zz. swapping them actually causes issues with oil returning to the pan, theres a reason its different pan for the 2zz. there are other more significant issues than what youve mentioned, especially for track usage. gti isnt really comparable, its a basic hot hatch not really a performance fwd car. more comparable to the dc2 & dc5. i highly doubt a gt4 version would have saved anything, US didnt even get the 6th gen gt4 and they barely sold any in other markets. there is a reason why so many sports cars were discontinued around the same time

    • @flaringstar7708
      @flaringstar7708 Рік тому

      @@arcanevoid9199 the reason i said 2ZZ was redundant is that both are 1.8l i4 NA. The VVTLI system was revolutionary but anything that revolutionary introduces new problems, notably valve tick was an issue. And the cold starts were notoriously bad for 2zz's from the cylinder walls being brittle in comparison to other motors. Yes the 2zz made higher power figures than 1zz, but basically only from the compression and the lift. As they say though, theres no replacement for displacement. And forced induction like in the TRD matrix supercharged's case... the 1zz is just kinda... the same but slightly more reliable overall. Its only disadvantage was only getting a 5speed manual vs a 6speed but thats a known swap.
      Now, i hope youre joking about a GTI not being performance. Thats what a hot hatch... IS. Its an entry level performance hatchback. Sure the golf r32 exists as the upper tier version. But in terms of power, the 1.8T in the GTI was similar to a 2zz. Both being fwd, same displacement... thats what the comparison is.
      And it should be noted, everybody knows the 2ZZ was not a beginner friendly motor thanks to a frail oil pump gear known to shred itself with just a HINT of over revving, like... not even a fair amount, a little. Plus the oil pan itself is an issue, as it does need better baffling as on the track, oil starvation is a common concern.

    • @arcanevoid9199
      @arcanevoid9199 Рік тому

      @@flaringstar7708 so your saying it’s redundant because of the 1.8 in the gti? how does that make any sense, and what valve tick is this? are you just talking about the noise? and you can’t really compare to the cylinder walls to other motors as there aren’t many like the 2zz which has an aluminium block with no liners. The compression on the 2zz isn’t much higher, and even without lift it makes more power. 2zz it’s a performance engine with a Yamaha designed cylinder head, note the GE in the engine code. 1zz is an economy based engine. it is a hot hatch but it’s not much of a performance car, even just looking at how little power the engine makes. not sure why you would compare the 1.8TDI to the 2zz, they are only similar in displacement. 1.8TDI also makes less power than a 2zz with a turbo and the same displacement which is pretty funny. not sure how that makes it not a beginner friendly engine, I learnt to drive in my 2zz celica and haven’t come close at all to over revving it

      @@arcanevoid9199 aight check it. 2ZZ, NA, 180-190 crank hp. Cool.
      1zz -matrix TRD 180~ hp.
      1.8t vw, 220 in the GLI and audi TT. 180~ in the gti.
      Starting to see the comparisson? Similar power outputs from a 1zz and a vw 1.8T in a simpler setup, the TRD supercharger was a bolt on option out of the box (though it doesnt become a FZE) that the celica couldnt fit under the hood sadly. toyota being the worlds top dog... ypu'd think a liiittle re-designing wouldnt be an issue, it felt like making the 2ZZ was a solution to a stupid problem that could honestly just have been quicker by tweaking the design pre-launch.
      What im gettin at, is the 2zz being redundant because its power comes from high compression (11.5:1) and an insanely high rev limit. The power band is stupidly high, meaning you hafta be reaming on it to get full beans, the cylinder walls are coated MMC not aluminum, which by the way MMC is abrittle material, not good at holding big power, hence why its common to see bored out cylinders with iron sleve inserts: hold the power at high compression, allowing for higher boost tolerance which the 2zz straight dont got much, give it too much it goes boom. Lets not forget that the oil pump gear commits die at high revs like a 2zz wants to run. And yes, im aware lotus managed to push it to the mid 200hp range, but they also remapped the fuel system. Could you do a motor swap to the lotus? Yeah. Can the power numbers go much higher than what lotus got? No not really, not reliably. Still got them cylinder walls to worry about. A 1ZZ with a supercharger, slap in an intercooler, you can break 200 hp no problem. Little bit of tuning dust, bigger pully, belt, golden. The 1ZZ will straight up take the bigger boost that a 2ZZ cannot without SERIOUS modifications like the aforementioned iron cylinder sleve mod. However, the 2ZZ has one crucial advantage if you have the money. while youre doijg the cylinders... you have the perfect opportunity to introduce forged internals (monkeywrench racing sells good stuff for mid to high output 2ZZ applications.) Also port/poli the head. Once you've done all that, which costs a fair amount, you can break 300 hp, 400hp i'd rebuild the head, the valvetrain will be crying. A 2ZZ will admittedly outshine a 1ZZ in every way at the cost of much more money, the 1ZZ is simply a cheaper way to skip the early modding stages of rebuilding the bottom end. A 2ZZ is more or less stage 1 outta the box, its good NA performance, but dont got a whole lot more in her. i'd argue that so is the 1zz TRD. They achieve the same thing, in different ways, with 1ZZ being stronger built out of box, in terms of abuse handling. Both have a few little flaws to do with oil management, some early 1zz burn oil for fun, and all 2ZZ have starvation issues on the track thanks to the open oil pan. For the track, you NEED the baffles, or you'll starve it on the track. If oil isn't returning fast enough you have a different issue entirely, i'd almost say the oil temps were not warm enough, or wrong oil.
      And i'll only touch on the valve tick issue a little bit. 2zz are known for this, but its kinda a crapshoot, some wont get the issue, plenty will. The valvetrain is a highly complex shimmed setup and will cost lots to fix, because you have to re-time the motor. Yes, the job is cams out, the noise itself can come from anywhere in the valvetrain, be it from cam lobe wear to valve lash... the issues goe on. Vw had a similar issue in early 2.0T models, but they fixed it using cam rollers.
      By the way. I know full well about engine code from toyota. And yes, a GE indicates a performance centered design, im not disputing that. However, if 'performance' is just horsepower and torque, anything can be a GE if they simply oh... idk, boost it a little. I mean hey, the 1zz with the TRD bolt on pushes the same as a 2zz's stock numbers, but at least with forced induction you add better tuning potential, plus the lower compression lets 1zz take slightly more boost. Its just easier to mod with so much less cost to the owner.
      And just to add. The GTI wasn't diesel. The GTD is diesel. It's just, you said 1.8 tdi... thats vw for turbo diesel. The GTI uses the 1.8T gasser that sparked the 1.8T neva lose memes, cuz it was easily tuned, took boost and you could make beans like you'd never need in a stock motor. And just for the record, a GTI is a performance car. Thats why i sold my Celica for a GTI, reliable power at low costs.

      @@flaringstar7708 the power also comes from a very high flowing head, very good valve sizing, low rotating assembly weight etc. the rev limit is only insanely high if your used to american cars, its not uncommon for japanese 4 cyl that are performance orientated to rev over 8k. they even got the 2zz to rev to 12k when designing it. the power band is high in the rev range but it honestly makes it fun. and just because there is a coating on the cylinder walls doesnt mean they arent aluminum, thats like putting wax on paint and saying its not paint anymore its wax. and honestly the cylinder walls are not the first thing you worry about when going boosted, pistons are the main weak point as the crank and rods are forged. the 1zz has weaker rods and a weaker transmission, it will also make far less power at the same boost as a 2zz. so it may be the case that even if you run more boost on a 1zz you will still make less power than a 2zz with less boost. there is actually plenty more performance in a 2zz, its not hard to get one past 200whp with bolt ons. also my point about oil not returning fast enough was in regards to people swapping the 1zz pan onto the 2zz because they think its baffled. the valvetrain is really not that complicated, the shims are easy to change and plenty cars have done big mileage and never had valve clearance done. retiming the motor is simple and you shouldnt have to when doing valve clearance, ive retimed the motor when i was 16 with no previous mechanical experience. GE means performance wide angle head usually designed with help from yamaha, not just performance centered design. and the fact you think the 1zz is easier to mod when it needs forced induction just to make the same power as a 2zz is pretty funny, in the real world there is not much point trying to do anything with a 1zz. getting a supercharger is not easy, and expensive when you do find one. futhermore there are mutiple bolt on superchargers for the 2zz, even ones that you can buy currently so its a bit of a moot point. and sorry i got confused, not super knowledgeable on vws. and going from a celica to a gti is a downgrade in many ways
