YES!! I spent the last 30 years of Corvetteing saying I was going to buy a new one once in my lifetime. That ship has officially sailed. I now fully understand that I own the last Corvettes I’ll ever buy. It sucks that the dream is dead, but it’s reality.

NO! The C8 is not overpriced. Yes, it's too much for me. I own a C7 & a C5 and can't afford to buy yet another. But what you're getting for what you're paying is totally worth it! You're getting what Zora Duntov always pushed for. A super car, at an affordable price! Vette lover's know.

Corvette has always provided the best bang for the buck among super cars. The real issue which takes the C8 out of reach of working Joes is maintenance. I maintained my 58 and 69 easily by myself. C8 not so.

Having been a Corvette fan since I was a small child, I own alot of literature about each generation. After alot of encouragement from my oldest grandson a few years ago, I finally decided to purchase a Corvette. I looked into purchasing a C8 Stingray and had even decided on the Torch Red color for it. In the end, I decided not to get on a waiting list for the C8, but instead I purchased a Torch Red C6 Grand Sport with very low mileage. A C8 Corvette is still alot of bang for the buck even at $100k, but in the end I went for the $40k C6 and have had no regrets. I'll still probably purchase a C8 Z06 when it's not so difficult to get one since my grandson has decided that he wants my C6. I'm starting to think that was his plan all along.

My I add, A dealership that has trained tech. staff who can service your 90.000 corvette. Yea they sell them BUT. But that could be any 90.000 car or truck. In my neck of the woods, they have about 4 different chevy dealerships. Most Have one for sale. The people in the Corvette group that have C8's Have to travel way out of town for service their cars. One guess why

I have a couple issues with the C8 corvette. The base price may be somewhat affordable, but I think a lot of older Corvette owners look at the C8 and think about maintaining a car like that. The older cars a good mechanic could maintain and that has a lot to do with affordability now. Most people do not have the specialized tools and equipment , or knowledge to repair or maintain a car like this. Dealers charge a fortune to repair or maintain these cars. I think the C8 corvettes are for the elites now, even though the base price may be obtainable for some people. Inflation is also a big factor. I dont know what a warranty is on a C8, but I know in the 1960-70s .I believe the warranty on a new corvette was much better. Many factors come into play now days, like food, housing, utilities, fuel, etc.

It was priced right at 55k for a base car when it launched. The problem then became dealer markups killed that good idea. Now it is 75-80k and there are still dealer markups so absolutely.

In 1963 adding A/C, power windows, upgraded tires, suspension, brakes and cooling, am-fm radio, tinted glass, head rests & other interior comfort items, etc. etc, would quickly jump the base price 25-30% or more. So there’s no sense in complaining about cost of options. One can always jack the price up checking all the boxes, it’s what all car manufacturers want you to do.

The C8 is a deal when you consider it's competition - european mid engine exotics - Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Porsche, etc. that cost twice as much! A new loaded American pickup will cost you close to $70000.

  • @Jdikmen

One big difference is the cost of options. In 1972 my total options were less than $1,500 loaded. Today the C8 options can double the base price! You definitely get more, but that is a big difference. My annual income today is about the cost of a C8 spec'ed out nicely, but no way I could afford one. The cost of almost everything else has skyrocketed the past couple years and no end in sight. Most of the things I buy for my daily life and business are up 200 to 300%. Bowl of pasta at the restaurant today was $28.00 + tax + tip + packaging fee - same pasta at the same restaurant three years ago was. $11.50. My home insurance went from $2,400 last year to $5,600 this year! All I do now is work to pay taxes, insurance and eat - nothing left over after business expenses.

I bought a new 2021 C8 convertible, 3LT, Z51, mag ride control, front end lift, competition sport seats, upgraded wheels, museum delivery, etc, etc., and it was under $100k. A tremendous value in my opinion. By far, the best car I have ever owned.

I'm in Canada, I know the topic is not about the C8 Z06/Z07 package but I want to say it anyway, about 10 months ago I called a dealer for an allocation he said it was a 5-10 year wait for a Z06 and with the limited online prices it would run around 190-200K CAD(No dealer mark up!). For a little more you can get a pre owned Lamborghini Huracan. I'm saving up for an H.

I think the C8 does give you a good bang for your Buck but I also think the average corvette buyer is unable to do ant maintenance on the car because there so technical so that’s another cost to consider. I have a C6 Grand Sport and love it. I’m part of the divide I just can’t warm up to the C8. I also have a C3 so those 2 are all I will ever need or want. Great video great research Lyle.

My 2021 C8 was about $15k above what he paid for his ZR-1 (30 years ago!!!), and $25k over his C5. We both agreed the C8 obiterates the cars he had for a price that's in-line considering inflation.

Great video Lyle. To expensive for me. I think a couple things about the c8. Yes dealer markups also they don’t let you test drive or sit in them to get a good feel of the car and that’s super important to a potential customer. That puts it in the elite status. I think that alienates the driver potential of purchasing a corvette. No thanks. It’s a Euro look alike. I’ll stick with my c3 convertible stingray. Happy though for those that can afford one. I remember as they were wrapping up the production of the C7s that you were a really shrewd negotiator, that you could get out the door with one for $40,000, give or take a few hundred dollars. And when Chevrolet announced the MSRP for the 2020 at $60k for the base stripper model, it seemed like a fair and appropriate price. But it was impossible to find them, or order them at that price. And we're now in the third year of production, the MSRP has gone up $6,000, and as I'm sure you're aware, in the Tampa Bay area dealers are still slapping a $10,000 market premium on this car even if you try to order one.
The fact is, at $75,000, I can get a Tesla Model S (not the plaid) which is as fast in the 1/4 and can carry four people. I can get a CT4-V Blackwing, which has a higher top speed, equally as luxurious, and is an objectively better daily driver. I can get a Hellcat, which is also a better daily driver and faster than a C8 from a roll. I can get a slightly used Lexus LC500 which is a better daily, significantly more luxurious and much much better looking. I can get a new Golf R and have $30,000 to spend to make it faster than a C8. Or I could buy a C5, C6 or C7, retain all of the prestige of owning a Corvette, and still spend tens of thousands of dollars less. If I want to have something mid-engined, I could even buy a Fiero for $5,000 and have $70,000 to take to a speed shop and turn the thing into just about whatever I want it to be.
If you can get one at MSRP, the C8 is still a performance bargain. But as long as you have to deal with the dealer tax, there are just better options out there.

I think the big difference is in the price of options. In earlier model years the options might add another 20% or so but now it is easy to double or more the base price. Then add on the dealer gouging and it gets downright painful and out of reach.

    @Carl-un1rr Рік тому +1

Firstly, I enjoy and learn from all your videos. Thank you! Your analogy of average income versus Corvette prices over the years was very interesting. Today and back then the average income individual (that’s me) has a list of priorities. House, kids etc. So the Corvette for me never got up that ladder high enough until I retired and then the 40th Anniversary (used) came into my life. Two years ago I replaced it with a C-5 Convertible. I am very happy.
The C-8 base and even with some options I’d say is worth the money when compared to other performance cars like Ferrari etc. I still can’t afford a new C-8 so glad to tell you I love my C-5.
One more point. I mentioned to you once that my personal feelings about the C8, as great as it is, has lost its visual appearance of the “American Sports Car”. So I am not in any pain not being able to afford one. 😊

However back in the 70's 80s and 90's you could fill your car with groceries for about 30 bucks, compared to today its over 100 bucks. avg Mortgage in the 80's was about $300 bucks compared to todays avg over $1200.00

Interesting to learn, and thanks for researching that. I do believe that the outside expenses play a significant role in our ability to buy a high end automobile, Corvette or not. But as was discussed in your previous video, the number of younger folks buying C8's is significant. I struggle to believe that they all have the annual salary to accommodate that purchase. I have to wonder how many C8's have been financed, what the average amount of the financing is, and how many have been repossessed. Rates are up significantly now and I wonder how that has impacted C8 Sales. Seems to me that there's a lot of C8's available on the new and used car market, while its very challenging to find a C7 Z with less than 20k miles for under $75k, especially a Manual.

There's another way to look at it: What do you get for the money spent? In 1969 I bought a new Corvette convertible for $4700. In today's dollars, that would be about $37,500. It came with 350 hp, 4 spd rock-crusher transmission, twitchy Rochester carb, sometimes air sometimes not, AM/FM radio, rattles, squeaks, skinny tires, no power brakes, no power steering, inquisition seats, and a leaky top. (I still have that car, by the way.) You get so very much more in the C8 that it's not even comparing the same species. Should compare against a current $$$$ Eurocar. C8s are definitely a bargain --- even if I personally cannot afford one, I'm happy for those that can.

I just got my C8 this summer. I waited 17 months to get it at MSRP. I got a 2LT. I find it to be a steal for the money. It’s a completely reworked car from previous generations that is very refined and FAST. My list price was $81k. That’s the same price as a lot of full sized trucks now…

I'm just commenting to trigger the UA-cam tracking algorithm so that perhaps the man can afford the C8 he wants someday, because I value this channel.
the question is not for me. Unlike most corvette buyers, I bought a used C5 for value and efficiency rather than speed, and a convertible top that goes down without any visual obstruction.
I learned that GM is not bashful about asking for money when I attended a corvette club meeting at a dealership and saw a "special edition" Louis Chevrolet C6 on the showroom floor for $110,000, that seemed to be nothing more than a graphics package . I didn't really check deeply for options, that price was kind of a stopper for me.
As a carpenter I once knew commented about a friends older jet boat, , " there are just so many things to buy in this world". The old small block chevy boat ran out just fine.

I have a '17 Z06 vert twilight edition manual...blast to drive/raw/edgy. My 6th Vette. Whilst still paying on it I got tempted by the C8 hype. So #7 was white, body colored nacelles & mirrors, with yellow calipers and interior yellow stitching..also stripes on hood. Pretty car! Overpaid some for this '22 Stingray HTC.. loaded with 675 miles. I learned I needed major dental work a month after I bought it so sold (for a hefty loss). Stingray is cool no doubt, garners attention, is customizable/Z mode etc but having had manuals for years and not being into paddle shifting..it felt odd to not have a manual. I honestly from an aesthetic perspective realize a widebody is the only look that'll make me happy after having a C6 GS vert and my C7 Z06 vert. Stingray isn't 'enough' per se. Also it occ had a delay is shifting when in regular drive mode. I had a '22 BMW M40i Z4 and I never noticed delays with it. It made me rather enjoy an auto, sans any paddle work. So, the trans in the C8 isnt perfection unless using paddles I'd wager. So all in all...I do think C8s are a bit overhyped and overpriced by about 10-12k in all honesty. And I'm 50ys old and have bought all my Vettes and hand detail and do cosmetic and mild performance mods. I am a cool chic & know my cars pretty well. 😎🍸🥃

Honestly for what the car is capable of compared to other cars including exotics, it is a relative bargain in my opinion. However, I'm perfectly happy with my 04 Z06, and I honestly don't desire a C8, they have yet to fling a craving on me and I don't think they ever will, I like to row the gears and without that option I have no interest. But yes, still a lot of car for the money.

Lyle, relatively speaking, I doubt that many pure base Corvettes are sold, at least in comparison to fancier models. Designers have decided that we need performance and luxury, and they've done a pretty good job with both in the C8, but neither comes for free, even in the plainest versions, for which $60K is probably a fair price.

It is still however, just too far outside of my financial reach as well. I traded in my low miles 2011 C6 GS so the delta was not crazy. It is still the best bang for the buck you can get in a semi-exotic super-car.

Im actually on the opposite opinion here, i think the c8 is the best value the corvette has ever been! Think about how much car you get for the money compared to how much you used to get. Base for base look at say a 98 base vs a 23 base, you get a significantly better performance value, id say well over 100 more features, and improvements all while being a similar income to price gap. There’s something to concider. Alot of the best corvette’s were just a engine, two seats and a body when you boil it down

That’s very interesting and informative… I didn’t know that’s how they priced corvettes. Now they have always been expensive but affordable as it should be because they are a special car. Corvettes are a lot of car for the price. And they hold their value good. It’s not exactly a Honda or Kia. However with all those dealer markups, they are no longer affordable. It’s too much for a base model now. I like how you included current expenses that I really don’t think about. Made me laugh a little because all of those things are on auto pay. But it does come out of my median pay and there’s now less disposable income. I’ll stick with my gorgeous C6. Thanks for sharing.

Hi, Today Sunday 9/24, I just returned home from a local Corvette show held in Prescott Az, sponsored by the Prescott Vette Sette. First (a comment from last weeks video..."Is there a split") from my conversations with the 300-400 corvette enthusiasts, there was no split opinion about about the C8 Corvette. There was a lot of C8s, as well as every other generation...of course everyone has there favorite. Bottom line consensus...it's a Corvette and a "Barrel of Monkey's" to drive. For me it's, Good by C6 hello C8. Fast forward to the present...I have a 2024 C8 on order and did not pay any markup. I do not have a TPW but I'm at 3000 status. I ordered a base model with 1 option, NPP. The $69k price is a deal, in my opinion, when looked at from the price to performance ratio. As Lyle pointed out, the price is in line with the average yearly salary. So if it's too expensive...all things considered...cancel all the social media expenses...and get out and drive a Corvette...Best Regards to all.

I haven't bought a NEW Corvette, since my 1969 coupe. The newest Corvette I own at the present time is a 2007 C6. I bought the car when it was 3 years old, for $32,000. The sticker price when it was new was around $60,000. So I'm willing to wait a couple years, after a new model comes up, and pick up a Corvette in great condition for a much lower price. With the introduction of the C8 that plan (at this point in time) doesn't work anymore. Because of the demand for the C8, the price of used C8 has come down very little. So yes, I would like a C8, but no, it is much to expensive for me now. It's still the best bang for the buck, compared to other super cars, but its not the "working man's Sports Car" anymore.

I think if Bowling Green would have produced the amount of money that they planned that would have probably kept the price stable and not gone up as much but unfortunately due to covid supply issues have really hurt production, which I think was always the key to maintaining a stable price.
