He nailed the rhythm track on this one; I think that even if he was able to record this version with real drums, he would've gone back to the house and used the stairs like in this demo. You know you're good when you have two entirely different versions of the same awesome song.
I actually prefer this version to the 'Sketches' one. I'm glad we have both but I listen to this version way more often. I think it goes a long way in describing how he REALLY wanted MSTD to sound. Seeing as this was recorded over a year after the studio version I think we can assume this is the version he would have released (obviously rerecorded). He stressed multiple times he wanted MSTD to sound 'scary' or 'scary rock' and he wanted to shed the 'romantic rock' image. I think this fits that description.
There's no way he was going to shed the romantic image (not entirely, at least) with songs like Everybody Here Wants You, Opened Once and Morning Theft. I agree, though, that he did want to scare people with this album, and he did, with just its rough draft.
@@MojoPin1983 Wasn't Everybody Here Wants You the one he was embarrassed by and didn't want anyone to hear? It makes complete sense to me that he wanted a self-destructive type of album based on his mindset at the time.
@JBaron Photography That was, Forget Her, but I think Jeff was also ambivalent about Sony hearing, Everbody Here Wants You, because he thought it was too commercial and was a potential hit.
Sorry, what do you mean by MSTD ( STD as in sweetheart the drunk, but what is "M")? ALso I am so happy to read this cause I also think that this is exactly the version he was getting refor the album. Another question: can you actually hear the lyrics? I can't except for separate phrases, but they are different from the 'orthodox' version. ALso You and I Guitar version differs from teh Album version. Also there's another version of Nightmares at the Sea that he sang at Arlene's in February 1997 before leaving to Memphis, much more interesting than teh one that ended on teh Album.
We need to ask Mary Guibert (Jeff's Mother) how in the hell this song was never made public (along with You and I (Guitar Version), Peace Offering, and Let's Bomb The Moonlight - all on youtube )

Thanks @@VegaVelecka! "yeah they can fall before me" definitely sounds spot on, and I thought it may be "but communication's dead now" similarly there, that bit is quite tricky, but "all you cast away"... or maybe "all you cast out" would sound spot on too. The official lyrics for the album released WR had the lyrics "You'd like to see him suffer" instead of my take "Oh you had him tremour" which is quite similar and also had "Oh no the sights of broomsticks sliding on the ground" so I thought it might be possible he reused those lyrics but they're just hard to decipher in this version so your take is very possible too, thanks for the input! The mystery of this song keeps me coming back. When I realised he might be singing "hermeneutics" it made me realise he may have purposely made this song hard to interpret and open to a million possibilities. He is quite the cheeky genius after all
@@brad4072 you know, as to purposely making it hard to interpret, I totally agree! You andI Guitar, - same story. MTSD is an acronym for the album title that Jeff chose (My Sweetheart the Drunk).
Nightmares *By* The Sea, not, *”at”.*

Hey there, tried my best in my newest comment, it's a tricky one for sure
Is this a more developed version than the one we saw on sketches? Or vice versa? I prefer it.
Woah
This would be great for a Levis commercial! It just sounds classic.
Wait … what. I love this
