    I was on Instagram and I saw someone who was giving improper care to their hamsters. I talked to them, and they actually listened! This week they are buying the IKEA Detolf hamster cage and are researching more about hamster care.

    The thing i took away from the intro was her saying that "I don't keep these animals in lavish enclosers, the are just rescues." The fact that their temporary homes in a rescue is better than the horrible care put out by chain pet stores really screams how much the industry needs to up their game!

    • @MunchiesPlace

      Thank you. I'm glad you got it. It's like dogs and cats in shelters. Ppl don't realize they cannot have a luxury life there because it's a temp thing, but if ppl adopt more often, they can get the homes they deserve and be taken away from horrible one's or not as nice ones via rescuing. Thank you because I've had ppl not get this and explaining to them has not been easy when they do not see the big picture. ♥️

      you're so right! and also pet stores do need to up their game because I just recently got my Hamster a couple of weeks ago at pets at home ( I'm from England and pets at home is basically the English Petsmart) but anyway. when I brought my female Syrian hamster Billie she was 9 weeks (now 12) and she was in the tiniest glass enclosure with 3 other hamsters! one of the other hamsters in the cage had a scar on her nose suggesting they had been fighting. I was utterly shocked. I'm 16 years old and no hamster expert but even I knew that was disgraceful. pet shops do really need to up their game and provide better care!

      @@chloeownsworth3913 I got my female Syrian at Buddy and I was told that she was a male. She was a peachy color, so I named her Simba. I had no idea how to care for a hamster but my best friend got one so I was also allowed to have one. We reserved her and picked her up on our way home because it was in a mall and me and my parents were shopping. We were told by the employee that Ferplast Duna was a good cage so that became little Simba’s new home after having lived with 4 or 5 of her siblings in the pet store. One week later, one hamster had turned into eleven. The fact that the pet store employee couldn’t even tell the sex of my hamster was ridiculous, when it’s so easy to tell. I’m pretty sure we had the same amount of knowledge and it really shows what kind of people they hire to look after the animals

    You inspired me to take in some gerbils a few months back. I saw an ad of two boys in this tiny “gerbilarium” which I measured at 200sq”, they were overweight, had no wheel to exercise in and no toys to chew. I put them straight into my 500sq” tank, they now have a wheel and so many toys. All they do is chew! Lol. I’m saving up for a detolf now. The larger male, Pollux, loves running in their wheel, after feeding time he’s straight on it. I love my gerbs so much!!
    And thank YOU for everything you do for all these little furries!

    My boyfriend and I purchased 3 gerbils with the pet store refusing to tell us the gender, well what do you know we had two girls and one boy. And here we are months later with 11 new babies. Anyways we know way more about gerbil care, and they are a lot more money than hamsters for sure! But we love them and they are now separated into their appropriate genders lol and in 70 gallon aquariums!

      parkfare princess I always get confused when people say gerbils accidentally breeded because it’s pretty obvious which are boys and girls at a couple months. Anyways I have 11 gerbils (on purpose, no babies haha) so good luck with your 14! They’re incredible :) Their chewing defiantly adds up the money with replacing broken houses and stuff lol. I have mine in groups of 2/2/2/5, my pairs each have a 40 gallon and my group of boys have a 70. Just wondering how many females you keep together? 4 of mine are girls and I find it stressful to even have two females together but obviously it’s necessary for everybody to have a friend😅

    I'm currently 13 and I am doing fostering, with permission from family. I saved my first hammy at the age of 11, and I miss her. She was 1 year old, and her cage was DIY by the owner. It was 6×5 inches... I was angry, but I didn't say anything. He changed the rehoming fee to 5 dollars from 35 when he saw how young I was, although I could afford it from my pocket. I placed her into a DIY cage I made. It is a 45 gallon tub, with the side cut off, connected to another 45 gallon tub. When she died, my cat came over to her and was nuzzling her. She was happy. Thank you for inspiring me to do this.

    Personally, I would never EVER rehome ANY of my pets due to unexpected life events.. but- Bringing a baby into your life whether expected or not, is overwhelming. Your life and everything about it completely changes. I think being a responsible pet owner sometimes means making the difficult decision to rehome your animals that you may not be able to take care of. I think that it’s better to give your animal to someone who can give it the proper care and love, instead of neglect it because your life changed. I don’t think that you can really consider responsibly rehoming your pet because you’re having a baby, replacement of the pet. Instead of rambling I guess my point is that, it’s more responsible to swallow your pride and rehome your pets, even if you don’t want to, instead of neglect them.

    • @ericaspruill8461

      Thank you for your understanding comment. I recently had to re-home my birds due to job loss/forced to sell our house/ moving states/and having our first baby simultaneously. Some people have been negative towards my situation by I couldn't afford to feed my family let alone purchase bird food. Sometimes re-homing is the best option for the pet to stay happy and healthy.

    • @aikikaname6508
      @aikikaname6508 Рік тому

      Yeah in this circumstance I think it’s understandable, as we don’t know if this was an unplanned pregnancy or maybe they had financial hardships. I’m guessing if that tiny cage was enough that they couldn’t fit in anywhere else, they probably aren’t particularly well off.
      I can understand their choice in this circumstance, for me the sad part is that gerbil is in one of the worst enclosures I’ve seen a gerbil put in and was all alone, and if their friend carries over that care that poor bean lost it’s only shot at a decent life with Munchie

    Ok, as far as "Replacing" goes, replacing an animal with another animal, is not the same thing as rehoming a pet you don't think you'll have the time or space for because there's a baby on the way. That is a responsible thing to do. It is not replacing the animal. My family had to rehome a dog that was loved very dearly when a baby came along. My parents did not expect to have to rehome the dog at first, but that's what ended up needing to happen. If it's gonna come down to you can only keep one, obviously, most people will choose to keep their child. Deciding you don't have time or resources for a pet when you have a baby, is by no means the same thing as getting rid of a pet so you can go buy a younger one or a cuter one. If you have to choose between your gerbil or whatever and your own baby, hopefully, you'd give the gerbil to someone who could take care of it.

    • @ThePurpleHamster
      @ThePurpleHamster 5 років тому +1

      Anna Taymond yeah I was thinking the same thing.

    • @MunchiesPlace
      @MunchiesPlace  5 років тому +4

      Some may argue that the dog came first, dog should be family and should have to go, it isn't fair to the dog. There is also the argument of are you dumping the animal in a state that allows kill shelters, are you doing background checks on the person taking the animal, etc. So yes sometimes it is right to re-home but it is also bad to re-home too if it can be avoided or if you don't rehome appropriately. Someone in the comments under a video of mine didn't realize their state was a kill shelter state and began worrying of the shelter they surrendered their cat to. They worried they may have killed them by not knowing due to lack of looking into it (we will never know). You would hope people would look further into making sure their beloved pet goes to the right home but after experiencing so many shady or scary unintentional or intentional neglect situations, you really need to think hard about it. Ive been critical of rehomes in the past before, but I can also understand the other side of it too. Especially if medical is involved or a sudden change happens.

    • @annataymond9529
      @annataymond9529 5 років тому +1

      Munchie's Place oh we directly rehomed the dog. And I think it’s great that you’re helping these animals. I just don’t think it’s fair to call rehoming an animal you don’t think you can take care of now that there’s a baby, “replacing” the animal. But I absolutely agree that people are often too quick to decide they need to get rid of their pets.

    • @annataymond9529
      @annataymond9529 5 років тому +2

      Your child being born and having to make a decision about whether you still have time for the animal, is not the same as deliberately just discarding an animal that you got bored of to go and get a new one. I absolutely agree that is incredibly irresponsible. And while I don’t understand why she felt she needed to rehome a small animal with a lifespan of a few years, I don’t consider that replacing the animal. Having a child and impulse buying a new pet are usually pretty different things. A baby just isn’t in the same category as a gerbil. I totally agree that even small animals with shorter lifespans still deserve respect as living creatures. And it’s always great to see someone taking such awesome care of them. I babysat a mouse once that was being kept alone in a small cage, and she died shortly after. I still wonder if I could have done more for her. Her owner loved her dearly but just couldn’t seem to understand that the environment wasn’t good for her. And I mean loved her a lot, like decorated cage, treats, play time, full on burial and funeral at death, constantly talking about her, just seemed very firm in the belief that she was doing fine. (Sorry, that was a bit of a tangent)

    • @AinmekoSaraijn
      @AinmekoSaraijn 5 років тому

      Yea i agree. I understand the otherside but babies are not the best with pets. And rehoming is easier then sending the kid off to foster care for that being. And yea no one has said get rid of the kid but the animal is dead if it hurts the baby.

      That's the sad truth, most likely the family will still care for it like how it was being kept. No one seems to do any research into these creatures and selfishly except it would like what they offer it in petstores. Always do your research first before owning a pet or taking on the responsibility of one. I do hope at least that this family member may one day go online and learn about it's care. All I know was that it was being given to a child and I do not know how old they were or if their family was into pets. So good luck Gerbil. i cannot help every animal but at least I was respectful of the lister and their decision.

    Oh my goodness... Lil Bean is *so* much like my past ham, Tequila. She was golden, not umbrous, but their personalities are SO similar! Tequila was a rescue, too. She injured herself on the pet store floor. She was climbing a hanging toy and tried to pouch it; it got stuck and in the panic she got her foot tangled and was hung then for a minute or so before we could get a member of staff to help. She was sent to the in store vets who I personally know, and the next day they called to tell me the ham was okay and if I wanted her. I just couldn't say no! Tequila was so friendly, mischevious and was always on the go. She was constantly adventuring and causing trouble. Watching Little Bean going about her business reminded me so much of my Quila. I hope we get to see more of her :)

    I saved 2 gerbils from a bad situation and they were in that same cage your gerbil was in and would ALWAYS escape and nobody would look for them for days so I bought them a new cage while they were still my friends gerbils but she still couldn’t afford the bedding, food, and definitely couldn’t afford any enrichment of any sort but my grandmas sister died who used to rescue cats so my friend took one of the cats and I took my friends gerbils because I couldn’t stand seeing them in such a bad situation where they were neglected. So I brought them back to my house, bought them the Prevue cage (temporary), better food, hides, chews, better bedding (and filled it up higher), I bought them 2 6.5 wheels which isn’t big enough still but it’s better than their 4 inch wheel that they had so I plan on getting a bigger one, and I also just gave them love and attention.

    Little Bean is super cute. She looks really inquisitive and bright. I like her coloration....it reminds me of cedar. I'm sorry you couldn't save the other one, but hopefully, he went to a safe home.

    Today I adopted a hamster! Thanks to your videos and other information available I feel like I was able to give her a wonderful home, thank you for making your educational videos because before I thought of getting a hamster I had no clue about the things they needed.
    Petco had a beautiful baby girl hamster, she was one of their adoption ones not one of the ones you buy. She’s very sweet and seems tame but I am not really pushing her to come out I just noticed she didn’t bite me when she was wondering what I was doing and came up to investigate. (I was putting in her water bottle)
    Well anyway thank you for your awesome videos! They really helped me and my family and I’m passing on all the good information to my daughter who knows that tiny cages are bad.

    When I was born, my mother was so focused on me that she forgot about her hamster and it starved to death. It sucks, but I'm glad someone had the self-awareness to re home their hamster before it suffered unduly.

    What a beautiful little girl lil bean is. I would love to adopt her but unfortunately I live in the UK. I just love the agouti colouring which is not often seen any more. When I was a child all you could buy were the wild coloration. I have three now one of which is an adopted one that noone wanted as she has neurological problems and her previous owner neglected her and didnt look after her the way they should. She was very skittish and frightened little hamster. Now she is with me I treat her like an angel and love her to bits.

    Could you give recommendation for the basic budget humane set up for a new hamster, including bin size (brand), necessary accessories, and diy set up? Basically the starter's package for making a hamster happy.
    Then if you could do the same for mice, gerbils, and guinea pigs?
    That way we'd all know the bare basics for making a pet healthy and happy, then we could build from there.

    I have 2 Male gerbils and I don’t think they cost too much more than hamsters (I’ve had many hamsters in the past). If you have a big enough enclosure for them, you don’t have to clean them out too often, maybe once every 3-4 weeks and do spot cleaning every couple of days. I buy Megazorb for them which is a horse bedding so therefore you get it in a HUGE bag for like £15, which lasts for 4 months or more. I give them a lot of bedding to burrow in and buy them wooden toys to chew and even that isn’t very expensive. Gerbils are clean animals which means they really don’t need more cleaning than hamsters.
    They do chew a LOT, so I don’t give my gerbils anything plastic except their wheel which I make sure they do not chew. They get loads of wooden and cardboard toys but it really doesn’t come to much money.
    In conclusion, I prefer owning gerbils to hamsters! I love hamsters, but from experience I think that gerbils make more entertaining pets as they make incredible burrows, chew rapidly and make nests with cardboard tubes, play fight with each other and are generally amazing pets to just sit and watch.
    (I love hamsters too, guys, don’t kill me. Just a personal preference!)
    So happy you were going to rescue a gerbil. There aren’t enough gerbil videos on UA-cam but I find them underrated pets!

    I had a gerbil in my early 20s. I didn't know they needed to be paired so he was alone in a 10 gal aquarium and he was awesome! I would watch tv with him and he would run all over the couch but would never get off the couch. He would run around (with my really watchful self) outside on the deck but would never leave the deck. He was amazing and was my best friend! Maybe he bonded with me like he would another gerbil?

    Something that bothers me is that the owner of the gerbil said she needed room for a nursery so she couldn’t care for the gerbil anymore, but in that tiny cage, how could that gerbil really take up *that* much space?

    • @MunchiesPlace
      @MunchiesPlace  5 років тому +1

      That is a good point. But what she may be referring to is the time and cleaning of it. It sounded like that from what I was getting at.

    I rescued a gerbil. She's white and crazy. The owner kept her with a hamster that beat her up alot. She had no hair by her nose. The store i adopted her at gave her to me. She caught my attention bec she was dieing to get out of the glass cage she was in. She looked horrible. Kind of dirty by her lower stomach. The owner to the store said she prob wouldn't grow her hair back. Well, she is! And, yes! That is what she does. She don't even chew she eats it! She is in a wire cage that doesn't seemto phase her. She is just so glad she has her own space. She like never sleeps unless she is on her wheel and crashes out standing up lol polly bocket lol i loved her. I had one. The compact typed. Oh, and the gerbil her back was really curved like she was on a small wheeltoo long. Be careful when you meet people. Infact, i hope they don't know who you really are. They could do it just to see you or have you there. Any way, does gerbils sleep at night?

    ohh shes very cute. her continuing to try and jump ship reminded me of my syrian. if her lid was just duck taped i dont think id have one anymore(due to having two cats and an area she could escape to outside). why do people think thats going to work long term?
    also cant leave the lid off or shes dangling on the edge about to jump off. 0 depth perception on her lol
