- At Cooter’s, a store in rural Sperryville, Virginia, about 120 kilometers west of Washington, D.C., Confederate flags are flying off the shelves. The red, white and blue battle flag, with 13 white stars representing the Confederate states, was carried by southern forces during the U.S. Civil War in the 1860s. The South had seceded from the Union over several key issues of disagreement, including slavery. VOA’s Deborah Block has the story.

For those saying the 'Confederate' Battle flag stands for slavery, you're wrong. Heres the true meaning of each thing on the flag:
1. The red field represents the blood of christ
2. The white border represents the protection of god
3. The blue 'X' represents the cross of Saint Andrews
4. The 13 stars represent the 13 states which seceded from the Union.
That flag represents rebellion, god, and heritage. Majority of the Confederacy didn't even own slaves, and majority fought for the Confederacy because its their home. The Union fought for preservation of the Union, ending slavery came last.

if you look at the writings of Confederate soldiers, the majority of them knew what they were fighting for when they joined the fight; the right to preserve and expand slavery. As for rebellion, that's just it; the southern states wanted immense power in order to expand slavery, and when things didn't go their way, they seceded. The Civil War was mainly about slavery, and even state declarations of independence stated that. So, sure, the Confederate battle flag doesn't solely mean "slavery", but in modern-day terms, it represents the Confederacy's values; treason and slavery.

I don't own a rebel flag and I don't advocate the using or the meaning of a Confederate flag as a form of white supremacy.
However if I wanted to buy a single flag or a hundred of them I should and do have that legal right and I should have it without persecution from anyone.

I get the fact that white nationalists are using the flag in a derogatory and disrespectful way and without question this shows poor judgment and racist attitudes of narrow minded and hateful people.

More than 100,000 white southerners fought for the union. And of the 185,000 African Americans that fought for the union. Many of them were escaped slaves that joined the union army when give the chance.

The confederate Consitution made it illegal for any state in the c.s.a to abolish slavery. It's clear that the rebels wanted to break away from the u.s.a to form a country that would enshrined slavery forever if they could. Those that fought under the Virginian battle knew what the cause was the expansion and preservation of slavery.
Not every southerner supported secession. The Virginian battle flag is not the sole history of the south in the u.s

It's not against the law to sell the Confederate flag.
Exactly. The flag has only been banned from private establishments and federal buildings that don't want it. However, people who want the flag can still buy it and use it as they like. They just shouldn't get upset if they're not allowed into an establishment that has rules against it.

It's probably better that anything confederate is not displayed on public/federal land for the sake of unity. However, having a Confederate Museum at least gives southerners with a connection to the Confederacy a place to remember their heritage. Furthermore, people have the first amendment right to display the Confederate flag on their private property.

Seems like white people get profiled more than any other group. Everyone always assumes we were born with a silver spoon in our mouth, and mein kampf in our hand. It is just assumed that we are wealthy and privileged, and that we see ourselves as superior because of our race. Everything we do or say is just assumed to be racist, derogatory, discriminatory etc etc, and all because of our skin color...
Funny thing though, I and most white folks I knew growing up were dirt-floor poor blue collar laborers, and we have been subjected to this racial bias against us our entire lives. Our culture is somehow the only culture in the world that its ok to discriminate against. Our history, our traditions, everything about us is ok to be erased ... just because we're Southern white folk, but that's not condemned as racism or cultural discrimination... because its ok to be racist and discriminatory towards white folks, especially us dirty, low-down, good-for-nothing, Southerners. Go to hell! I'm a Southern white boy, and I'm damned proud of my heritage and who I am. Only ignorant fools believe the War was fought over slavery. I will fly the flag until I die... right alongside my Southern brothers black or white who love their heritage, and fly their Battle Flag of Freedom!

I have heard a few different arguments as to why people buy them. I do not believe that this flag will be forced out of public schools for quite a while and even if it does happen in the near future I don’t think America will ever forget this flag for as long as it’s name stays USA.
I dont see it as racist but a flag that was fought by southern ancestors. If they want to fly it they have the right too. I say this as a minority. Dont erase history.

The most common use of the Confederate battle flag was by the Dixiecrat party who used it as their political symbol and ran on Anti civil liberties movement policies. Most people who fought in the civil war never fought under that flag. The only active duty confederate military who fought under that flag were either in the confederate navy or part of Northern Virginia under General Lee. So how are these people sure about this ancestry they claim.
