Wow I'm a black man and this actually happened to me when I use to sell life insurance, except the flag was on his truck. I rang the doorbell anyway because I drove 40 minutes to get to his home. Then I actually sold the insurance policy. And they were actually nice.
Most of us are. If others are respectful, we are too and likely more friendly than anyone else in this country, regardless of color. Simple as that. Respect.
That flag isn’t racist. That war wasn’t fought to keep slaves either. The states exercised their right to secede from an overbearing government. History refers to it as the Civil War, but it’s correct name is “ The War of the Northern Aggression”. Only a small percent of whites owned slaves, so to think that so many would have died to keep slaves is ignorance. The North had no interest in freeing slaves until they found themselves losing the war. And after the war, the northern states that had slaves continued to hold theirs for many years before they were all finally free. This isn’t my opinion, but facts easily discovered with minimal research. So any one who thinks that flag racist is just lazy and ignorant.
The sales manager was bad, but I'm still trying to figure out what it meant when DeShawn crumpled up the check. Did that mean that he was going to refuse to sell the knives to the customer out of anti-Southern racism, or had he already given the knives to the customer and this was his way of screwing over the sales manager? Because up until that moment DeShawn seemed like a decent guy.

The confederate flag don’t have no effect on me! If some flag holder want to put their insecurities on display then that’s on them! Because the United States was founded on these types of people who considered blacks three fifths of a human being.
Hi DJ. I am French. I know this flag can hurt some people. But watching American History, this flag dos not only represent slavery and war between North and South (the good ones and the bad ones). It is the symbol of a rural way of living against the industrial society. History is history, we can't get back. We can only live trying to be good with each other, and make the best we can for all of us. We are the same. We have love, kids,… And we are tought to love other's kids like ours. I think this flag represents more a souvenir of a natural way of living than slavery, violence, oppression. I love your comment. Love and friendship to you, from Paris, France.
I'm glad you said that I lived in Grand Prairie Texas and I had the Confederate flag in my apartment and most of my neighbors were Hispanic or black they were all welcome in my apartment and a lot of their kids come over and play with my dog and eat with me sometimes. I mentored their kids I would give them things that were mine as a kid things that were very important to me one of the women I defended against another white man she was a black woman he was a white man he spit on her I beat his ass! But for me to take that down because I feel like people are offended know I believe in being myself and proving to people that this battle flag is important to me in my Heritage. Makes me no less of a man or less loving to other cultures are other nationalities or people. I love People based on how they treat me not on the color of their skin or their religious background or anything else I like being around people of other cultures then myself I want them to accept me for who I am and I accept them for how they are the world is nothing more beautiful place! You know what a couple years ago I went and gave out invitations to registered Republican voters in my area and I noticed it the black Republicans and that Asian Or Hispanic Republicans were the most kind to me more so than the white ones it's the same thing I like the experience it was a really cool experience and I'm not just saying that it absolutely was me and the guy we were walking together, we discussed that we were really surprised they we're genuinely grateful for what we were doing ! What it boils down to is we have more in common than we have different and that's what really matters 🙏🏻❤
That was part of his lesson. "Don't try to convince them to like the knives, convince them to like you. When they like you, they will want to buy from you."
I'm a person of color and back in 1999 I rented an apt right next to a person who had a huge confederate flag attached to his living room wall (covered the whole wall like a 6 foot by 8 foot flag ) He had long heavy metal hair and a lot of other dudes lookin like him hanging out at his apt during the day. I never had an issue w him. He was a gentleman neighbor and treated me and everyone w respect. We always greeted each other if we come across each other.

So the coward who threw the rock is also the coward who abandoned his troops in the field. The sales leader who threw the rock, also told DeShawn to go by Sean. Interesting writing.
And the resident of the house displaying the American flag shut the door in the face of the black man, while the guy displaying the Confederate flag let him in and treated him as a human being.
Vault-Tec he was talking about the person who threw the rock through the old mans window because he thought the flag was racist. The use of rope is probably one of the best subliminal details in this, knowing the history of it's use during slavery. First the rope around the pilar and then the rope they cut to demonstrate the sharpness of the knife. That was a fine detail
I hated being a salesman as a teen. This lady cussed me out so bad that I thought she was racist. She just didn’t want people knocking on her door trying to sell her things.
As a black man living in Detroit I could not imagine that happening in an opposite scenario. A white young man selling knives in a black neighborhood. I actually thought that turned out pretty well except for the friend that left him behind.
I don't see the problem with selling knives in any neighborhood. Everyone has knives at home anyways, if someone wants to hurt a seller it will happen no matter if they sell knives or vacuum cleaners. But you got a point.
TBH man, I can, because I did it for a few months after Highschool lol. (Well not just black neighborhoods, I went were the referrals took me, so all over the place) You on the eastside?
“You're one of the good ones” . I think he was referring to salesmen, since his experiences with them have included a rock through his window. I think the film is supposed to play on the viewers own stereotypes.
Or the idea is that [all] people suck. It was common growing up to hear "you're one of the good ones" layman's translation meaning "you are good people".
I think it meant what it meant. He has a belief in something that had deep roots in his life. Believe it or not I look at that flag differently now. You don't have to hurt or hate a person to see them as different, but you do have to respect them. That is what he did, he respected that young black man and did him better than his so called " supervisor friend". I am black but now I can understand and respect that flag better. Not that I will be flying it, but respect those who lost loved ones that died for it. We all lost people in that war.
I’m a man of ethnicity, a Yankee from the North, a military veteran and a Harley rider. Several riders have the Confederate Flag on their vest and we ride together without any animosity. It’s not the Flag or your race, it’s the content of your character that matters!
I'm from New Mexico 12-year army veteran. I totally agree with your statement. Proud Americans served underneath that flag. I feel we should not erase history to accommodate the weak-minded. AIR ASSAULT
The one everyone thought was a racist just wants to be left alone, the person who is friends with everyone is actually the racist. I am quite happy the trade is more or less done, locally at least. I know people are just trying to make a living but I am too polite to say no to a demo but too cheap to buy anything which leads to both of us wasting each others time and neither of us want to be there.
Being a black man that grew up in the heart of Appalachia I grew up seeing that flag a LOT while there were racist people who flew that flag there were also some very kind people who also flew that flag as well as a matter of fact several of my friends and neighbors had that flag (including oddly enough one who had left wing ideals on most topics) and when my truck broke down it was one of my neighbors with that flag that luckily saw me and picked me up (they also had my truck towed home for me) because of this it showed me that flag represents vastly different things to different people and just because a person flies it doesn't automatically make them a racist
It may not make them racist but it's a pretty good indicator that they are. Just like seeing some kid in a Che Guevara T-shirt. He may not be a hipster communist but it's a good indicator.

@@lewiswereb8994 It's not a pyramid scheme or a multi level marketing company, but there are a lot of issues regarding how they treat employees. Now on the other hand, saying that Cutco has some of the most quality knives in the world is ridiculous. I'm not even entirely sure if that whole comment was sarcasm. What they really offer are overpriced upper-mid tier products and occasionally they will sell high quality cutlery at a premium but still over valued price. Yeah, their lifetime warranty and sharpening is great, but besides that it doesn't take much looking to find some real high quality hand made cutlery sets, Wusthof and Henckels offers knives in the same price range that are arguably better quality.

When Deshawn realized what his "trainer" had actually done(insisted Deshawn handle the sale himself, probably threw the rock, and then drove off on him) Deshawn balled the check up. He held his head up high with a new found confidence of himself. The "trainer" told him this but was patronizing him(no pun intended). When Marshall gave it to him straight and genuinely, Deshawn knew then who was truly on his team; hence "you're one of the good ones"! I don't think he was racist about Deshaun's name. Shaun is more common in whiter communities than Deshaun, so the guy's advice was pretty solid. Familiar things/people are easier to make bonds/trust with.
The old guy was loyal to the flag for a decent reason. DeShawn crumpled the check because he would not be loyal to a company that deserted him. Loyalty is earned.
I agree. His anger was directed at the company man who deserted him. When he heard the man's real intentions for the flag, and that he intended no harm, it made his managers actions feel even more dishonorable. This was a really interesting short.
I like how the film wants us to assume that the guy is racist. Nit-picking everything he says to go "Oh yep! He hates the blacks!", but nothing he said was racist; only how you could interpret it. Especially when he says "You're one of the good ones". We assume he's referring to Deshawn being one of the "good" blacks but the guy may simply be referring to Deshawn as being one of the good salesmen instead. The film forces us to see how our perceptions are askew in society, to both the whites and the people of colour
Reading the comments looks like alot of people didn't get the symbolism here or watch the whole thing? This is not a story about a misunderstood southern gentleman guys.
As a 50 year old White man, born, raised and still living in Birmingham, Alabama... First let me say - Alabama and all of the South is not stuck in some time loop of the 1950's-60's. It's 2021 here also ! Yes, Many of us in the South have strong feelings about our history and wanting to preserve it....While also making Massive steps forward in removing the barriers that caused so much ignorance and hatefulness. (BTW - This is Not simply a Southern issue, it's a Human issue. It has Nothing to do with geography OR one race of people.) The ONLY way to resolve differences between people over issues like that flag or Race, etc.... is to simply talk to each other. Two people sitting down, speaking and listening to each other with Equal respect and the willingness to understand each others point of view !
This short did a great job taking phrases that we consider racist and having the supervisor and the flag owner both use them, however when we hear the supervisor say them, we don't bat an eye- "You're selling yourself!", while when the flag owner says something similar- "You're one of the good ones." (as in good salesman), we assume he's making a racial comment, when he wasn't at all. Such an interesting short film, really played with my head, and was executed intelligently.
Good ones - Christian decent guys I think he means. Aside from being a salesman or not - which I suspect the house owner thinks he is not but gives him a chance anyway.
It means it's a flag. The flag doesn't assign itself meaning, people do. People can also falsely assign meaning. People read too much into things. Inanimate things.

To those that don't understand the ending, I think it's all in our own interpretations mainly but how I interpret it is: he made a decision, he sold that man those knives and rather than giving the money back to the people that left him down. He stood against them by not giving them anything. The man that they threw the Rock at got a free set of knives nothing came out of his bank account. It's all his. The young salesman got the sale he needed, the confidence boost, and the respect of being a good person. On top of that he also received moral Justice for seeing past a petty thing, a small thing like skin color or a Mark that is misunderstood. The supervisor salesman got nothing, he didn't get his recognition, he didn't get courage, he showed his true colors in the end by cowarding away and leaving a man to his own Doom... little did he know the good salesman and the man with the Confederate flag became friends.
Yeah but that guy wasn't a Christian and he was a racist! Used the Lord's name in vain and then told DeShaun that "He's one of the GOOD Ones!" But it does matter, because too many people make it matter. If being different didn't result in being attacked for being different, that statement would be true and beautiful. I love that the actor (acting out a scene) insisted things could be so simple, but the fact even the writer had something in him/her that insisted the character include "lazy and liar" was more telling of truer biases. How would you have felt if the character said, "If you're fearful of what you don't understand, you're fearful of what you don't understand. If you're insecure, you're insecure...."? I've used to walk my dog every day. I lived close to a confederate flag. I would walk down the street and look at the flag every time I walked by. The house own would come out and sit on the porch from time to time, and I happened to be stopped by him and he talked to me for a bit and asked me about what dog I had. So, I ended up telling him and he commented saying that my dog was beautiful and what not and I continued on with my day. But then the whole thing about banning the confederate flag happened and I walked down the street once more to see the flag and it was gone. Which really upset me because I loved seeing it while I walked the dog. Ever since that day I've never went down that street again. There's nothing wrong with the confederate flag in my eyes. It's part of history and some family's had ancestors who fought in the war. So, the flag was passed down. And honored by their loved ones. I think some people took the flag out of its context and blamed it for being racist and should be banned. But I disagree. We can't attack people simply by what they believe in. They are still humans. This reminds me of my experience with a person who had a Confederate flag on his truck. One cold December evening, I was parked at the Avondale Marta parking lot when I proceeded to start my car. Unfortunately, the car was dead due to a depleted battery. So, I tried to flag down people for assistance. Car after car passed me by. Finally, a Marta police officer arrived and I asked for a jump start. However, he stated, it is against company policy for him to help me because it might damage his vehicle. Anyway, as it was getting darker and colder by the minute, I started to scan the Marta parking lot only to find one vehicle with a Confederate flag on it's license plate sitting in a secluded spot in the lot. At first, I was hesitate to approach the vehicle. But, I needed a jump start. I proceeded to approached the dark tinted window truck. I tapped on the drivers side glass. As the window slowing opened, the gentleman in the car said, hello, how can I help you? I explained my situation. He stated, "No, problem brother. I would be glad to help you." He connected the jumper cables and my car immediately started. I thanked the gentleman and handed a few dollars in his hand. He quickly said, "No...no...not necessary! Brother, This is my gift to you" while he gently placed the money back into my hands. We hugged and wished each other the best during the holiday. That night, I safely returned home knowing there are people with Confederate flags who are loving, kind and compassionate individuals.
Wow, that’s a nice story. Im super glad you got home safe, because those situations of being stranded with your dead car SUCK. I’m glad he did it without question. We’re all human, and we all gotta help each other out sometimes.

@rain M Because of how do you view that flag. Do you view it as a sign of racism and rebellion against the Union? Or do u see that flag as personal sacrafice for a cause and belief which at the time they believed in was against Union tyranny and state's rights. As an Asian person with ancestors who fought for the south in the civil war in "Non-white" or "Colored units" I found the line "People are too damn lazy to bring their flags in no matter what" A very strong line, You bring in a goddamn flag no matter what!
It's crazy. As a black salesman and in-home service tech for over 15 years in the South, I've only had 2 weird experiences which might have been deemed racist. I've been in numerous homes where the Rebel flag flew and the homeowners treated me very nice. Don't judge a book by it's cover.

The "Confederate" flag wasn't considered a racist symbol by most people until the 1980s. It was pretty much like a football team banner, a recognition between people from the South.

I mean, people think it was about slavery and it wasn't. Lincoln told the south if they joined the union, they could keep their slaves. But that would mean the south wouldn't have the same state rights as before. So they fought over it. It's a common misconception that the south just wanted slavery and was willing to die for it. But they could've kept slaves and joined the union. So that's blown out of the water.
@user name in Lincoln's letter to Horace Greenley "The sooner the national authority can be restored; the nearer the Union will be "the Union as it was." If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union."
@user name Over states' rights, not slavery alone. That's my point. The other half was me showing you that if Lincoln didn't have to free slaves, he wouldn't have. Shocking, I know.
Very well done. Nice to see young people have a ‘balanced’ perspective - especially in today’s divisive world. The background military drums added an excellent accentuation to the emotions.

Honestly brother, feels like society in general has taught everyone to be apprehensive of men when you first encounter them, especially if they are trying to sell you something in a suit lol. Thats what makes a good salesmen though I guess, the ones who know how to break the ice with ease
I was just waiting for him to say something like. "You're one of the good ones (pause) yep those other salesman act nice but they'll do anything short of kicking down your door for a sale." But that would've made the lesson less subtle.
It makes me think about how many of our fellow Americans died for the south and that their legacy is slowly being tarnished, and eventually erased from history. Most simple people that went to war in that time, did it due to service to country, or service to state. It had little to do with politics. To cast judgment on people that lived 160 years ago, with today's perception and ideology seems arrogant and ignorant, at best. What kind of judgment will people pass on us 160 years? Or will they just erase this part of history. I guess in the end, when we are gone, eventually we all will be forgotten. Some people sooner then later and some groups sooner than later.
@OAO The parties have changed so much it's hardly worth mentioning the distinction. Though, I see your point. I hate when people conflate racist and bigoted with republican (Not a republican myself, just seems wrong to be prejudice of a group of people).
It's true that people have baggage, not things. But some things have well-understood meanings (i.e. symbolism) that exist apart from any individual person's baggage, and that symbolism must be taken into account when displaying those things in public. If he wanted to honor his great-grandfather he should've put the flag in a display case alongside a picture of his great-grandfather and maybe a souvenir or two from the war, if he had any. He shouldn't have flown the flag on the front of his house. The front of your house is where you fly the flag(s) of the nation(s) you're proud of. Context matters.
People need to get over their narrow minded beliefs and see life for what it is, we all have things we're proud of and we all have things we're ashamed of, I'm a son of the Confederacy but do believe that all men were created equal, it's what you choose to do with your life that makes you the person you are, not symbols of your ancestors, put 4 men in the same room, any color you choose, all the same color, a judge, a lawer, a jailer and the criminal,,, who screwed up

We can only live trying to be good with each other, and make the best we can for all of us. We are the same. We have love, kids,… And we are tought to love other's kids like ours.

What they really offer are overpriced upper-mid tier products and occasionally they will sell high quality cutlery at a premium but still over valued price.

This was a great example where the whole short film makes you stop and think about what your first knee jerk thought was about all the little moments in the film. When they showed the confederate flag hanging on the wall in the white mans house, what was your first thought ???? When the white man was handling the knives during the demonstration what was your first thought ??? When he told shaun that he was one of the good ones what was your first thought ??? the writers are not trying to tell you anything , they are showing you how we have all been conditioned to think certain ways based on the information that we have consumed in our lives. What % of people that watched this thought the white man was a racist just based on the fact he had a confederate flag hanging on the wall . The writers want you to stop and ask yourself , was I wrong for making that assumption or does history as I have been taught by others , make it reasonable and alright to make that assumption .

The answer is hotly debated.
@user name in Lincoln's letter to Horace Greenley
"The sooner the national authority can be restored; the nearer the Union will be "the Union as it was." If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them.
@user name Now what say you? Show me where it says otherwise.
You've been duped man.
@user name Over states' rights, not slavery alone. That's my point. The other half was me showing you that if Lincoln didn't have to free slaves, he wouldn't have. Shocking, I know.

This was actually a great decision for this short. Seems like a test, on how you will interpret this
It makes me think about how many of our fellow Americans died for the south and that their legacy is slowly being tarnished, and eventually erased from history.
