  • The Truth About Dennis Wilson (1944 - 1983) Dennis Wilson Death | Beach Boys Drummer
The Beach Boys are considered to be one of the most quintessential groups in music history. They helped to forge a new sound that forever changed pop and rock music.
The band was made up of a group of brothers, as well as their cousin, and a good friend of the family.
The three brothers of the band, the Wilsons, are perhaps best remembered of all members. Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, and Carl Wilson all played very different but very vital roles in the band, which not only helped to change popular music forever but also helped to strengthen their familial bond. However, unfortunately, this familial unit was cut short in December of 1983 when drummer Dennis Wilson passed away, at the young age of just 39.
But what was it that actually happened on that fateful day? How did Dennis Wilson end up meeting his unfortunate fate? And what were the events that led up to it?

Dennis was a great friend to our family, he went fishing with my Dad. We knew two of his wives who were our friends also. Dennis had a hard time growing up Dennis told my parents about his childhood, his Dad tied him to a tree in their backyard and beat him with a belt until he passed out! Dennis always talked back to his Dad and got between his dad and Brothers because he didn’t want his Dad to hurt his Brothers! Dennis told our family what he went through when he was a child and teenager. Dennis loved my Dad and said he wished my Dad was his, he loved my dad big time! And I called Dennie my Big Brother because he was always protecting me! And some points to the story I read, Dennis was not the one who threw the things in the water, it was a jealous woman who did it! I miss and Love Dennie so much ❤❤❤

The way the 3 brothers responded to their dad's abuse was related to their personalities. Brian was always trying to make his father happy through music. Sometimes it worked, but often times Murray just criticized and pushed him for more. Dennis was a rebel and known to face his dad head on. Even had physical fights with him. Carl was a mammas boy. He stood back and tried to avoid his father's wrath by hiding behind his mother.
They all did drugs. Brian known to be an introverted homebody in the 70s. Even the legend that he spent 3 years in his pajamas. Dennis was a wild party guy, often getting in trouble. Carl hit a low point in the late 70s and did embarrassing things on stage during a TV special in Australia. He was so embarrassed that he apologized and cleaned up his act. Brian responded well to enforced rehab under Eugene Landy. They tried the same with Dennis, but he could not be controlled like Brian could.

@@truthtransistorradio6716Carl never hid behind his mother. He was just not as confrontational as Brian and Dennis. He spent a good deal of his childhood avoiding his father and keeping a low profile.

Charles Manson took advantage of Dennis' kindness and generosity when the Family stripped everything out of Dennis' house on Sunset Blvd, even giving away two of his gold Beach Boys record awards. 😮📀
Dennis' didn't have the heart to tell them to leave, so he moved out and into a garage apartment. That decision saved his life, when he realized how maniacal--and dangerous--Manson really was.
Unfortunately, Sharon Tate and her house guests were slaughtered by this psycho's acolytes.

Tex Watson was part of The Beach Boys scene. The Manson “family” was a creation during the trial. Everything about Manson’s association w/ the BB cult is absolute spin. The entire truth will probably never be known because so many wealthy ppl & celebrities were regulars at both the BB parties & at the ones at the legendary party canyon house on Cielo dr- IMO.

It was believed that Dennis may have bumped his head on a boat hull while underneath the water when he drowned and he immediately sank to the bottom of the undertow, but he was so drunk, that he may have not noticed when he hit his head. Few stories reported on that possibilty.
Of Dennis's few composed songs, "Pacific Ocean Blue" is grand, but there are also a couple of forgotten great B-sides that Dennis contributed to The Beach Boys. "Little Bird" from 1968 (B-side to "Friends"), "Celebrate The News" from 1969 (B-side to "Break Away" and a great Phil Spector-like arrangement.) and "Cuddle Up" from 1972. "Slip on Through" from 1970's "Sunflower" album is pretty good too.

Well Keith was a much better drummer but as for helping getting the Beach Boys going and song writing he had more talent than Keith most likely. He was definitely a troubled man but the boys father messed with their heads and the only one who seemed to be basically unaffected was Carl. Their father hit Brian's hard on one side of his head he lost most of his hearing in that ear. The dad was a real POS. Dennis is the only brother that stood up to his father and took many a beating for it so that might have been part of his problem. It was a sad end to a troubled and talented man.

@@james-nr3dx Carl was affected too. Carl had his own period of alcohol, cocaine, and heroin abuse. Luckily, he didn't sink to the depths Dennis and Brian did. And yes, knowing from my own experience, both parents being as f'd up as Murray Wilson, no matter how smart and gifted you are, it drags on you for decades. Self-medication becomes the norm.

My favourite Dennis Wilson song is "Farewell My Friend." Though his voice is raspy, he still carries the tune well for over two-and-a-half minutes, conveying the simple message. It left me moved and close to tears.
He was such a creative person who might've done better to expand upon his solo career. A tragedy that he drowned at 39, still in his prime.

You glossed over some facts about his "friendship" with Charlie Manson. He picked up two of the Manson girls when they were hitchhiking. He brought them back to his place for sex. After some days of free-ranging sex he comes home one day to find Charlie had taken up residence. Charlie wanted to become a rock star and wanted Dennis to help make that happen so Dennis introduced him to the Beach Boys and Terry Melcher. Everybody was weirded out by Charlie, especially Brian who was so fearful of him it led to his paranoia not wanting to leave his bedroom. Dennis was fearful too and for awhile wouldn't go to his own home which was occupied by the Manson Family. Charlie intended Melcher to be one of the murder victims but luckily Terry didn't appear at the house when the murders were committed.

    • @ms8596
      @ms8596 4 місяці тому

You've misspoke on a number of things - it was the second time that Dennis saw the girls hitchhiking and picked them up that he brought them home, then went to a recording session. When he came home Charlie and even more girls were in his house. Charlie did his schtick "wizard" or "guru" mumbo jumbo, and Dennis was already blown away by the Maharishi since December of '67, so he kept Charlie around. Others, like Neil Young (good buddy of Dennis) were enthralled as well. Brian did not end up staying in his bedroom because of Charlie. Brian's decline was for multiple reasons, from his life growing up, his relationship with his father, the ugliness of Mike Love, to a whole sh*tload of rotten luck in early '67 when he was trying to finish Smile. Dennis wised up about Charlie, and when Charlie presented the .38 round to him while talking about his son, Dennis kicked the living sh*t out of him. The "family" had been sponging off of Dennis in his home, wrecking his cars, and spending his money, so Dennis had BB management deal with removing them from the house in late '68 while he moved elsewhere. It was only when the murders hit the news and Charlie was eventually arrested that Dennis started to get scared, as he was getting messages from the family to keep his mouth shut or else. Plus, the family would do what they called "creepy crawly" where they'd slip into your house and rearrange things so you know you can't stop them and they can get to you. After the gruesome murders, it scared everybody throughout LA, not just Dennis.

I like the BB music also. But everything about Manson’s interaction’s w/ the BB scene is embellishment. Too include how, where, when, & which BB met him first.

Yes and no. Manson knew that Terry Melcher no longer lived at the Cielo Dr. house. He had moved out months ago. It is unlikely they knew who was living there that night.

1 or 2 junkies in a family is bad luck but 3 Carl Brian & Dennis, like that family must have been a train wreck, the early publicity photos hide the fact that they were all pretty well screwed already, cocaine booze and pills were the staple diet, how they managed to make any records is amazing, they did use a lot session musicians and singers to cover their sound,
