I'm not even a film photographer but you make some great points about the X100V. Since I shoot on digital I don't like the idea of a camera computer getting in the way of my "art". I switched to manual lenses on digital a decade ago and now that Leica M10 prices are reasonable I've switched almost all of my photography over to that system. Can't wait to hear more about your M10 experiences.

I feel you here. I own it, as well as Leicas M, Q and Sonys. It’s a lovely camera but my other cameras are seeing more light these days. The APSC 24mp format does not cut for me anymore neither. As being bound one lens, smaller sensor and 24mp makes cropping a challenge for large format printing which is what I’ve been doing a lot lately.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  7 місяців тому +2

Thanks for your comment Gaston, I appreciate it!
Interesting to read that the resolution of 24mp was also a limitation for you. Do you crop your images a lot? And what sizes do you usually print? Coming from 35mm film, a 24mp digital sensor felt like more than enough for me - but I usually don't crop my images and don't print much larger than A3 size.

@@KarinMajoka24x36. I suffer from Pixel Peeping dissorder 😂. Yeah for most case, 24mp apsc can be good but it all depends on the crops. I’m working on a deco architecture project and walking around with a 35mm and wanting to isolate a detail at 75mm equivalent can take a big toll on resolution. With 60MP I’m happier with the image quality. I love Fuji colors so much that I was thinking to get a Fuji XT5 but I sold all my Fuji glass when I parted ways with my XT4 so Sony A7Rv and Leica M11 is what i’m shooting daily. Also the AF on the Fuji is sluggish, camera heats up quick and battery is average. But I still love it and won’t sell it 🙃

I've printed and sold plenty of 24x36inch and bigger prints shot with my XT2. Even on my 16mp XE1. From galleries to private collections, album covers, book covers and magazine spreads. No one has ever looked at the prints up close and complained. I sold prints to both Leica and medium format photographers. Pixelpeeping is simply pointless if you print which I do all the time. I want to see the full image, not the not so sharp corners. I've also done perfect A3 prints with my 1-inch old Sony rx100 . I'm actually very happy with the APS-C prints after I switched 7 yeaes ago coming from years of Canon Fullframe

I think the 100v is a lovely little camera, I love shooting with the X-pro3. I am one of the weirdos who love the screen flipped in and almost never used. Minimizes chimping and really keeps you in the shooting moment, optical view finder and just go go go. Another good vid, love the black and white only discipline.

Great video about the need for each of us to really assess how much we value particular types of workflows and experiences. I personally enjoy shooting with both digital and film cameras but completely understand the OP’s sentiments about added layers of responsibilities digital workflows require. I personally believe film features a similar number of complexities but ultimately the processes we enjoy most feel the most seamless. So, if digital feels easier to use, it is; and the same is true for film cameras.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  7 місяців тому +3

Thank you for your comment, I truly appreciate it! I guess it all comes down to what aspects matter to you. I see myself more as an "experience" rather than "results" photographer who values the workflow over the final photo. Of course it's nice to have a great photo as an outcome, but the journey and experience of taking the photo somehow matters more to me than the final result. Therefore I want to have a tool that lets me enjoy this experiences as much as possible.

I am so glad you made this video. Many of the things you brought up in your video is exactly why I too sold the x100V and well and also I ended up getting a Leica M10P to go with my M6 as well. But one thing that also put me off of the x100v was it had too many functions it could be overwhelming at times. Leica pure and simple.

Options are there to use or not. Don’t need or want the options? Ignore them. Many photographers ignore all the video functions on their cameras and so can you. Life is about choice. One reason we purchase a particular camera is because of the functions they provide, or in your case, what they don’t provide.
I’m glad you found that you appreciate the purity and simplicity Leica provides.

As someone that used to shoot film, 40 years ago, who is getting back into (digital) photography your story resonates with me. I too have been having these same issues with digital, the battery life, memory cards and lack of stops on the focus ring of lenses (I went with Olympus E-M10 and Panasonic GX880 as my everyday). A Leica M10 is outside my budget but I have, after just six months, started looking for an 'analog digital' body/lens to replace the Olympus. Did you short list anything else before deciding on the Leica?

I got my X100v for a trip to Italy. Was tired of carrying a big Nikon D750 with a big f2.8 lens. The Fuji was a dream to carry. The styling of the camera is exceptional. It is simply gorgeous. It is almost like a fashion accessory. I found the image quality to be excellent. I got a lot of great images.
At the same time I became very much aware of the limitations of a single fixed focal length. There were a lot of shots that presented themselves but not taken for that reason.
I sold the camera shortly after my trip. If I had not needed the money to get something to replace it with I would have loved to have kept it. It is fully capable of being a camera one owns and uses his entire life. At times I regret selling it but the gear I now have is more versatile.

Totally agree with you. I come from a film background and learnt Photography with film using large format 5 x 4 cameras, a lot of medium format cameras and God knows how much 35mm films I shot. When I eventually gave up using film for professional work because it just made sense I got rid of a whole lot of my kit and went with the Canon 5 d and really liked it. Handling that camera was just like the EOS 1N FILM CAMERA I was using. I semi retired from pro photo work and didn`t want to carry so much kit around and went with Fuji x100v and the Prox 1 I just could not get on with them many of the reasons you pointed out. I did not want to go back to film even though I love it. It was the inconvenience and money so now I am using the Leica M9 and Leica Q, i HAVE ONE FILM CAMERA, that I use from time to time which I love the Canon F1n with a 50mm f1.4 and a 28mm f2 very basic camera but feels so good. Happy photography.

Full Frame…. The 28mm lens has been hard to get used to, but I’ve adjusted. Like you, I try to process or even crop as little as possible. Though I rarely use it, there’s a cropping thing in the view finder. I always shoot RAW which saves the entire file regardless of the cropped view finder image. Like you, I’ve shot manually (yet with autofocus) for years. But since the Leica is much slower than my Sony’s, I’m using aperture mode while on the street….but this can create more time in post…. Still, I’m in love with the Q3. View finder thing=it gives 35mm crop lines

Superb video. And it addresses all the key points of where I am now currently at. The X100V is a stunning camera but THE one area which lets it down is the manual focus. The ring even tightens if you don’t use it enough. In the last couple of weeks I’ve too been looking at the M10 plus Summilux-M 35 1.4 as I think it will provide a more simple photography experience. I need to try and rent one for a bit as the prices are crazy high.

Great feature and point of your decision. For the exact same reasons I never use my Leica V-Lux V since buying my M10. Itøs just such a grounded deliberately slower process to take pictures, and I feel present. The sofistications of the technology crammed digital cameras end up getting way to much attention, which should have been on motive and subjects. Your last point on keeping it as a snapshot camera would make sense, if it was a cheap second hand great little Lumix but not a state of the art pricy Fuji. But you found your back to yourself - and that deserves three cheers! The detours we make help us find our way, right ;-) Thx for well entertained food for thought - as always Karin. Love it!

Matche made in heaven! I'ven using a Leica M10 for the past 2 years and LOVE the way you handle it! I've tried a Leica SL2 and a GFX 50SII as competitors to the M10. Both of them are better on paper, but non of them could compete with the M10. A month ago I switched to the Hasselblad X1DII, but 3 weeks later I managed to switch back and got a M10P. Spec are not everything, the M10 is so unique and special, no other camera can compete with that way of taking photos. During this whole video I thought I should write a comment about you getting a M10, but at the end I realized I didn't needed to. Great choice! :)

I finally settled on a used Leica M240, which addresses some of the points you mentioned: it's a true rangefinder and the viewfinder is minimalist. Also, it uses the same Leica lenses which I already had. It's much cheaper than the M10, thought the sensor is a bit outdated, which I don't really mind, I quite like it, even at high ISO where it gets quite noisy. I definitely understand the manual focus issue, as being an old film guy, it bugs me as well. The OVF may not have manual linkage to the lens, but I don't buy the argument that it isn't a real OVF experience, as it's the framing and composition of an OVF that matters most. We have the EVF and the corner pop-up for manual focusing. About batteries and cards, well that's digital photography and nothing to do with the X100V.
So I have a solution for you. Buy an X-Pro3 (or the 4 when it comes out) and a Voigtländer X-Mount 23mm f1.2 Nokton as it is fully manual with the electronic contacts necessary to communicate fully with the camera. With these X-Mount Voigtländers we get manual focusing rings with distance and depth of field scales. The 27mm f2 Ultron is my choice for street photography as it's so small and light. I have the 23mm, 27mm and 35mm versions on order for my X-Pro3. Once I have some time on them, I'll be posting videos on them.

I like a slow process when taking photos. I don't do street photography (in the meaning of capturing people) so have no need for fast cameras. So I stick to my Sigma Foveon cameras as the end result is most important to me. For video and high ISO I use Sigma FP. This summer I went back to using my two APSC compact cameras from 2010 (dp1 [28mm] and dp2 [41mm]) as they have a more organic film look to the files. They also have excellent manual focus and I invested in two used viewfinders. What matters is that one enjoys the process. So I can understand your choice (also since I never understood the Fuji hype 😅). Best wishes with your new -car- eh Leica 😊

The crazy thing here is that the images you showed from the X100V absolutely rocked! As in some of the nicest I've seen on your channel. I assume that you weren't simultaneously shooting video on those days. That could have been part of it.. The freedom to shoot hundreds or thousands of frames in a day is a thing too. When I shot only film. (for a very long time) I found that sometimes I would shoot 2 1/4 and 35mm on the same assignment. As much as I wished otherwise, very often, the 35 pictures were better. Nowadays I sometimes shoot film and digital and the same thing happens. For me shooting more frames tends to equal trying harder, apparently.
I guess I'm polyamourous. I can't seem to stay away from my X100F, even though I spend much more time with the Leicas. (M10R and 246). Maybe I need rangefinder-coupled therapy. Oooff. Sorry. .... Actually, full confession: there are an M6 and M2 was well. They have been with me since the 80s and 70s, respectively. Yeah, therapy might be a good idea.
    Great work!

This is exactly why I switched from Fuji to Leica M digital. I was using an X-T4, so I have no idea if I would have preferred the optical viewfinder of the X-Pro. I think the X-Pro would have been close with a third party manual focus lens, but I still wanted the proper rangefinder focusing system which doesn't have an equivalent on the market. I've now had an M Typ 240 for a month and it's my go-to for digital. I don't think I can sell the Fuji equipment just yet because it's much more versatile (I do video once in a very blue moon) but it is much less fun for photography.

I can relate to about every word you said. I'm also shooting film and digital with the Leica (M4/IIIf) and a X100V. Shooting film is great and using digital bores me to death but the pictures speak for themself and this is where digital often wins for me. It's much more easy to get a good shot under circumstances where you would be hard pressed to get any kind of decent shot on film. For Fuji and me there will be no breakup any time soon. I use the strong points for my advantage and work around the weaknesses. One strongpoint for me is autofocus. But you have to get used how it works, until it gets second nature to operate it. And I got rid of all third-party batteries. With Fuji W126s-batteries, batterylife becomes a lot more predictable and thus planning ahead easier. I usually have one spare-battery in my pocket and that's it. I do not love the Fuji as I also do not love a phone or a toaster but it is a well working instrument that will get the pictures and is beautiful to look at. Side by side to the Leica M4 you will notice that the colour of the chrome on the X100V even matches the hue of Leicas darker (Leica IIIf to M4 ar a bit darker grey compared to later chromed Leicas), greyish chrome and its outlines also resemble the Leica quite well. The Fuji to me looks just like a younger Sister to the Leica M4 and I do not think this is just coincidence but was Fuji's intention.

Thought hard about one of these for a while, but ended up getting an X-E2 from a coworker for very little ( no lens ) I'm happy that it worked out this way as the thing I didn't think of was how many really neat vintage lenses can be used on the X-E's ( Old Olympus Pen lenses, Pentax Auto 110's for example) It's something I wouldn't want to go without now.

This is exactly why I ended up selling mine. I am using an XT-4 now with manual lenses and it gets you half way to what you want. Obviously no rangefinder in the camera, but with manual lenses you can fully make use of range focusing and muscle memory. The Fuji AF lenses I am not a huge fan of because of the reasons you stated.

Sehr schönes und ehrliches Video über die X100V :)
To be honest I also had the X100V and sold that after some time. It is really an awesome small camera, but unfortunately I got infected by the Leica Q hype and sold mine for an Q2 Mono and now ended up with the Q3 after selling the Q2 Mono. Although I'm very happy with the Q3, I really miss the size of the X100V. I think the most compact camera I currently own is the M9 with the 35mm 1.4 Voigtländer and it just can't compar - full frame just can't get to that sizes like the X100V - GRIII is of course king of compact APS-C.
Curious about the upcoming M10 video and if you have the chance, if you will notice a difference when you have the chance borrow to shoot a M11 for a period of time.

I went through the same thing. 40+ years of film and wanted to go digital which fit my retirement budget better. Tried the X100F and enjoyed it but was too different than my M3 and M4. Sold it, did film another year and gave it a second try with the older X100T. Again decided not rangefinder enough and bought a friends Leica M8. Liked it so much I quickly found a replaced sensor M9 and sold the M8. Now I have added a Monochrom and could not be happier with the switch. Rather than shoot film once a month, I shoot one or two times a week with the digital Leicas and get to use all my favorite M lenses.

But my love of film and which rangefinder made me cheat on so many models. I love the voightlander vito ii they are not a loved camera and are well made German engineering and take amazing photos. I have never used a rangefinder before and although I prefer the design over more dslr styling it kind of sounds exhausting. I have used some manual focus lenses but they are not my go to lenses. Listening to your dislikes reminds me how much I still do not know about photography.
I got into Fujifilm trying to buy the x100v and ended up with an x-e4 and the x-pro3. I quite enjoy being able to switch focal lengths so even if I would’ve been able to find an x100v at retail price, I would have to have another Fujifilm to experience different focal lengths.
Your breakup with the x100v stays true to a divorce, could be very expensive (lead you to a Leica)😊.

Had to give your video a watch, as I too have that Love-Hate relationship with the X100V. I've been hot and cold with Fuji's for years. I love the concept and design INTENT. But their execution of it leaves one wanting for more/different. The menus need to be stripped clean, reorganized and re-loaded. They push looks over functionality (e.g. limited contact points on the aperture ring located not where your fingers naturally fall), and i could go on and on. I hope another company launches a competitor to it.

Still, I've never had any interest in any X100 model (it's the fixed lens for me and the ridiculous prices). I understand where you're coming from, and the limitations of the X100 line. That's why I believe Fuji's plan could be to position the Xpro line more like a contender for Leica in the digital rangefinder market, especially with the numerous manual lenses that are appearing for the X-mount.

Hi Yosi, thanks for your comment! Interesting to hear your perspective - but to say it in your words: I understand you completely but I see it differently. 😬 For me, there is nothing faster for street photography than manual focusing in combination with zone focusing. In my opinion it's even faster than AF most of the times. So using film or using manual focusing does not necessarily mean it has to be slow. And what you say about don't wanting to mess around with the camera but be focused on the hunt: I totally agree! And this is what happens for me when I use a rangefinder camera with zone focusing. I don't need to think but use my automated muscle memory to focus - let's me feel more at ease than needing to trust an AF. :)

Nothing wrong with the camera, my work flow and the muscle memory of shooting with M cameras finally made me realize how much I really enjoy the range finder experience. I absolutely love having the tactile feel of a lens tab to let me know where I am in relationship to the subject. I too do street photography and lust after the Fuji X100V. I’m not willing to pay a premium for a used body. I’m waiting for the X100R next year.
Interesting you frame this video in terms of love. For me, a camera is just a light capturing machine. I use Fuji, Panasonic, and Olympus bodies. Each body has its strengths and weaknesses. I select the right tool for the right job.
It sounds like you have your own ideas about what you want. That is good. You need to know what you need and want. Not all bodies or lenses are a good fit for you. It sounds like you should get hooked up with a Leica Q. The choice of the M10 was a surprise for me. After all, the X100V is a cheaper version of the Q with a 35mm FOV. Not knowing your financial situation the M10 was a surprise for me. The body is three to four times the co$t of the X machine. The lens can be even more costly. I’m not surprised you went to Leicaland for your new love. After all, you were there for film. Why not go to the dial side of Leica. You obviously appreciate the design and technology choice made by Leica. The same look and feel. The Leica look of the digital files.
Continuing your analogy, one must date several people to learn what you really want and don’t want. It sounds like you will have some good memories about the X but it isn’t the one for you. I hope you make a profit selling your X and the M is the one you will walk hand in hand into the sunset with. There is a reason why there are so many different cameras to choose from.
    Enjoy your new love.

Yes, Karin, if you like the X100V would probably really like a used X-Pro3. I have both. The X-Pro3 is basically an interchangeable lens version of the X100V with the same sensor and firmware, so it has features you are used to like white balance shift memory for example where older Fujifilm cameras do not.
And with a cheap lens adapter you can use pretty much any manual lens with it. From expensive Leica glass to cheap vintage manual SLR lenses to even modern cheap Chinese lenses which are surprisingly good even for $50 to $100.
It's very easy to dial in parfocal zone-focusing at F8 for street photography (not having to focus at all is a lot quicker than either manual or autofocus!) And manual focusing becomes second-nature using focus-peaking with some practice. And if you miss the X100V flash you can slap on the tiny EF-X8 as needed.

M10 just did not fit for me: colours in jpeg not my taste, had a broken platine at it, too heavy/expensive for a „daily driver“ and for all day my focus abilities were too weak 🤷🏽‍♂️ hope you enjoy it!!!

Thanks for your comment and for sharing your experience! I totally get that, I sometimes wish the M10 would be as slim and light as the Fuji haha. But I found the Leica files to be really great for post processing. I honestly just throw a preset on my Leica files and do not need to do anything else most times. It's still more work than the film recipes with the Fuji, but it's manageable and does not take too long to get great results from the M10.

UA-cam content creation is fascinating. For the last 5 or 6 years everyone's been obsessed with making 100v content. Now all the content is about people selling their cameras

I have had several of the Fuji cameras... and just could not warm up to them... sharp, clean images; but just awkward enough in handling to not be comfortable.

sounds like one of the fuji interchangeable lens bodies with a vintage lens might be the right fit for you. Lets see if thats the new mystery honey .
or maybe a Ricoh. thought that has the same battery issues
Edit: ohhh I see. you've got that kind of tastes~

I think it’s in general a strange decision for fuji to be so mediocre for manual focusing. You have the retro aesthetics, the dials, even aperture rings but then you decide to for focus by wire. The lack of good manual focus in the fuji system was the reason for me to even start shooting film because there good MF is normal (and I wanted to use rangefinders without spending 4k)

Its why I use manual lenses because the manual focus on their lenses suck

Thanks for your comment, I totally agree! I mean the focusing system is a bit different on Fuji cameras with interchangeable lenses. In hindsight a Fuji Pro 2 or 3 with adapted Leica M lenses might have been a better option for me - but I just did not realise it at the time. If Fuji made an X100 camera with proper manual focusing though, I would definitely consider to give Fuji another try!

I owned the x100v but it never agreed with me. Image quality great, camera operation and experience simply didn't work for me. Strange fact: I owned the x100 for three years and liked it. Chose the Ricoh GR3-X instead and love it
