Pete Rose should be on the ballot as a PLAYER. His crimes went down as a manager so he should never be allowed in to be a hall of fame manager and should be banned from managing and front office stuff and all of that.
Are we really sure with Pete's gambling addiction that he didn't bet on baseball as a player either?Probably not on his games that he played due to his excellence.
Loyal to STL despite having left for a national career decades ago. He is a remarkable person and one of the best announcers in the history of television.
Costas is one of the all-time greats...as an announcer, an interviewer, etc. IMO despite being so well known and respected still hasn't truly got his due. I esp love that he isn't afraid to call out assholes like T Owens or circus clown Deon Sanders, for example, when every other announcer didn't have the spine to do it and in fact typically kiss such players' asses. (PS as for Rose, yes of course it's a joke that he isn't in the HOF, and I'm not a Reds or Philly fan. Just stating the obvious)
Bob Costas was the best, yes...maybe the best ever sportscaster and interviewer. I always like Dan Patrick too but anytime Bob was on doing anything at all it is so great. He was so smart and never, never boring.
Jim Gray was an asshole for what he did, but the standard within that profession has dropped so far I guess you can never be surprised. And…I NEVER thought I’d feel bad for Pete.
i was in the Phillies locker room in 1980.Carlton of course didn't talk.Mike Schmidt was talkative, but the majority of reporters were around Pete Rose's locker while Pete shared with them many stories.
Rose was the greatest all around baseball I’ve ever seen play, if you let Rose in then you have to let Joe Jackson in, people who are aware of his feats will bring his name up as well. MLB turns a blind eye to Jackson
@@rsears78 Nothing wrong with letting Shoeless Joe in. What he and the black Sox did was no worse than what Comiski did to them. Sadly, the Hall is for players who kissed ass the best to the BWA these days.
I've always thought: "Pete broke the rules, Pete needs to pay." But Dan Patrick changed my mind. The HOF is a museum for the fans. The holier than thou attitude of MLB and the baseball writers is what is keeping Pete out.
The HOF players (members) don't want Pete in the Hall. Johnny Bench said that on Patrick's show. And if those guys don't want him in, then he ain't getting in. The HOF Committee listens to *THOSE* guys.
He has the same sort of listless presence that Larry King does, but smugness at the same time. Everything that Larry does, you feel like it's guarded (and a fake persona) because he wants to protect his ability to get the next job. Reminds me of people who get way too far into their sales gimmick to the point that they start to talk and think like their gimmick after a while, and it's impossible to have a discussion with them without getting annoyed. By that, I don't mean that they're trying to sell you used shoelaces, but that they're tiptoeing around everything, trying to make you remember them by being as safe as they can. The conversation ends up not feeling genuine at all. At the same time, Costas and King talk as if they're authoritative without being specific, an obnoxious side effect of their gimmick. When Costas does start spewing his opinions, he's no less smug. I've not heard Larry break.
I understand everything you're talking about, but I strenuously disagree w/ you when it comes to Bob Costas. I feel that Bob plays close to the vest as far as not allowing himself to insinuate falsified info. about a certain player or team. He guards himself against presenting controversial topics from a 1-sided prism, but it has nothing to do w/ fear. I don't get the impression that Bob cares about his contingency the way a Shannon Sharpe or a Rush Limbaugh do, but that he's just so level-headed, and contrary to what you say, genuine, that today's society of instant-gratification on steroids, superficially takes that and blindly runs w/ it conveniently assuming he doesn't have positions, which is just beyond false! I think that he has such a harmonious blend of objectivity and subjectivity together, that neither the Mr. Spock's nor Captain Kirk's of the world get him. Furthermore, I believe that he's incredibly easy for anyone who's open-minded to follow along, highly pleasant, but for reasons that don't register to me, everybody would rather listen to a bunch of fake nasty tough guys like Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless?
I think it's really stupid, to put steroids and gambling in the same conversation. It's not about any moral equivalency; since that can't be quantified; it's about the logical structural differences, which can't really be compared. Pete deserves to be in the HOF, on merit. Roids, need not be a part of THAT conversation, nor do the Roid users, need to be compared to Pete, in order to justify or negate their HOF viability.
You missed the point. Someone being in (or nominated for) the HOF who used steroids isn't simply about some "moral" thing; first off the logic of Rose is he broke the rules, so no HOF. Hello, steroids breaks the rules too. But more than that, it enhanced their performance, it helped them to achieve what they did which is why they are nominated. Rose's gambling did no such thing. Steroids is easily - EASILY - worse. The HOF is a joke and so are the self-righteous, hypocritical assholes who "run" it. Screw MLB, I'll never go to another game.
All admitted steroid users should never be able to be on the Hall Of Fame ballots. They in effect were also gambling, they were gambling they wouldn’t get caught roiding up, thus having no regard for the game.
I don't recall what was said, but I was watching a video of Bob Costas and he was asked and revealed his political views, and I will not trust, or watch him the same way I did before. His comment was a deep deep extreme viewpoint.
I don’t really care about Pete Rose because I think he is stupid and one dimensional, but ok if these two think he should be in for the reasons they expressed, that’s good enough for me. It’s not a rubber stamp, it’s because they have thought about it and have a smart answer. I sort of think he should be in because if he wasn’t such a numb skull he would be. I also think Ichiro is the Hit King and a waaaayyyy better person in any way you slice it.
Sorry. But comparing what Pete Rose did, to steroid use is wrong! The rule against betting on baseball is clear! If you bet on baseball. You're banned for life! No exceptions! No second chances! What about that don't people get? Pete Rose clearly knew the rule and violated it. REPEATEDLY! He thought he was bigger than the game. And then compounded his behavior by lying about for years. Had there been a similar rule and punishment against one time steroid use, then the comparison would be valid. People should be held accountable for their actions. What does it tell other players if you don't enforce the rules simply because the player is a star?
I believe Dave Kingman should be in the Hall of Fame. 462 career home runs. When Kingman retired, nobody in the history of baseball with that many home runs was not in the Hall of Fame. If kingman's going to be kept out because he didn't talk to reporters, Curt schilling should never be allowed in after listening to him talk.
Kingman's not in because he didn't hit 500 HR's (442) or get 3,000 hits (only 1,575), and batted only .236 with an OBP of .302. By most accounts he was a terrible fielder.
