Holy shit Al Michaels and Bob Costas are soo good, those voices, so well spoken. This has quickly become my favorite sports show. Hope they stay on for a long time.
This has to be a pantheon moment for Bill. Bob and Al are 2 of the best to ever do it. Fucking legends. Side note, Costas easily has the most sane opinion of the steroid era and steroids in baseball in general,. I encourage anyone, especially those who hate that whole era, to look up his point of view.
Yes, I agree about costas. While it’s easy for some to find his demeanor to be pompous, he is thoughtful in all of his opinions. His interview with Curt Schilling talking about the Hall of Fame is another great example of him having proper perspective. We need more rational people like Bob.
never understood why this show got cancelled. ratings aside, simmons created something truly smart here. with the variety of guests he had on here plus the types of discussions that went on (fixing hockey, medicinal marijuana in the NFL), you finally have an intelligent conversation going on about sports (unlike the redundant crap that ESPN and FS1 spit out). i guess viewers don't value intelligence
Simmons is an asshole that’s why it got canceled. People don’t want to hear his stupid slacker voice or him bringing his Boston fan boy garbage into every conversation
Agreed one of the most interesting and in depth sports shows I've ever seen. Bill Simmons is a national treasure. His podcast is still great, but this show really was something special.
Watching this interview at the dawn of 2024, so seven and a half years later everything they have said here has aged like wine. Absolutely on point almost a decade later.
I'm not exactly a serious sports fan, but I have really enjoyed both Bob Costas and Al Michaels as sports announcers. I even remember recently commenting to my wife when we were watching a football playoff game that Al Michaels was one of the best. I wish more people were capable of making positive comments these days for those that deserve them. You guys are great.
I would love to see this same question asked of some younger broadcasters, especially those with a twitter presence. And then see a conversation with Bob and Al and those younger broadcasters.
Bob Costas last comment was literally "You'r dealing with a lot of shit!" then the interviewer said "we have to rap it up, at that point he just nodded. He's so smart he realized in that moment that adding anything to it would simply take away from it
Al Michaels mentioning playing a gameboy reminded me of that scene in BASEketball when Denslow made the comment to Coop about "Pacman videogames." And then it reminded me that Costas and Michaels were in that movie. Then it reminded me about that one episode of the BS podcast that Michaels was on when he said that he hates the movie or something. That's a shame.
I think Bob Costas and Al Michaels are fantastic. They are two of my absolute favorites. I also think the criticisms leveled at Phil Simms were legitimate. He was frustrating to listen to, and CBS replaced him with someone markedly better in Tony Romo. Tony is great!
These two men are legends. I never get tired of hearing their perspectives. But someone in the studio needs to pan the 2-shot camera to the right! You're cutting Bob Costas in half! HBO is known for high production values but what happened here?
Sort of defeats the purpose to have HBO -- which is not tied to network standards -- cut off two guests with a set time limit. The beauty of podcasts, now you can talk for 2 hours and 33 minutes and 4 seconds if you want to.
Does Bill Simmons really think Joe Buck decides which graphics pop up on the screen? There's producers and directors that do that. Buck is just calling the game.
Ya know realistically the curse of the Bambino is wrong. It should have been named after the Redsox owner at the time who sold Ruth along with a few other players to the New York Yankees and made that organization great. Just to get the cash to produce BROADWAY 🎭 plays. So who ever really coined that phase was incorrect at best. As far as present day Sports casters. Well they should watch a listen to old Broadcasters they’d learn something about the way it’s done.
You can tell Al and Bob dumbed themselves down for Bill Simmons. It’s frustrating when two men as experienced, intelligent and well spoken feel the need to play the dumb old man routine. False humility is not what I want out of these two in an interview
Bill Simmons is a hack. The guy is an embarrassment with a mic in his hand. I can't believe these two broadcasting legends would dumb themselves down enough to go on his show. No knock on Costas or Michael's who are broadcasting royalty in my eyes. It's just funny to watch them being interviewed by a guy like Simmons.
I could toatlly listen to those guys talk for another hour
Holy shit Al Michaels and Bob Costas are soo good, those voices, so well spoken. This has quickly become my favorite sports show. Hope they stay on for a long time.
"We don't even care what we think, why would anyone else?"-Al Michaels is awesome.
plisskin83 "Andrew Johnson called me before he got empeached" hahaha
What a great duo as guests!
one of my favorite conversations i’ve watched. wish it was way longer
Bob Costas seems really down-to-earth, likeable.
Reminds me of George Maharis
I could listen to Al and Bob all day
This has to be a pantheon moment for Bill. Bob and Al are 2 of the best to ever do it. Fucking legends.

Because Simmons is a terrible person
It's cheaper to do it as podcasts, and then people can take the conversations on the go with them rather than needing a screen.
Agreed one of the most interesting and in depth sports shows I've ever seen. Bill Simmons is a national treasure. His podcast is still great, but this show really was something special.
the most underrated announcers of our time!
These guys voices will ever be codified in my brain. Class-acts; The best in the business.
Watching this interview at the dawn of 2024, so seven and a half years later

MAN I didn't want this episode to end. Al Michaels was steller on your podcast and great here.

Wow two titans of sports broadcasting side by side pretty cool
I would love these two to go head to head in a million dollar game of Sports knowledge..winner take all
encore bill bring those 2 back i feel like ive never heardcthem talk before even though i listen to them all the time
Bob Costas last comment was literally "You'r dealing with a lot of shit!" then the interviewer said "we have to rap it up, at that point he just nodded. He's so smart he realized in that moment that adding anything to it would simply take away from it
Love this show, wish I could steam it without HBO
Really good guest tandem. Wish the segment w them went much longer
"You deal with a lot of shit!"
Never change, Bob.

Yawn
The laughs got scaled back! THANK YOU. It's better than it was before
al Michaels is still my favorite bs report interview
Please get these two on your podcast I could talk to them for an hour and they're hilarious
Two thirds of the heads of the power crews from the '80's--just add Scully to this and WOW!!!
should have kept the cameras rolling!
Nice _Bull Durham_ reference by Costas at the 9:37 mark.
The still picture of this clip makes Al look like Bob Hope sitting there.
simmons did some cool stuff with his HBO show. it didn't work out but he took a swing and i respect him for that!
When you are watching this clip, you are watching the two greatest sports broadcasters of the last 30 years.
wish the show was longer
Great insight!
Future hall of famers
I could listen to Al Michaels talk for another hour.
2 of the best
I just realized, Bob Costas would be a Great President.
Now these are real sport broadcasters
Shout out to the Keith Lockhart name drop. Siq
6:15 You do see praise on twitter, but pot shots are more common.
I think Bob Costas and Al Michaels are fantastic. They are two of my absolute favorites.
I also think the criticisms leveled at Phil Simms were legitimate. He was frustrating to listen to, and CBS replaced him with someone markedly better in Tony Romo. Tony is great!
al michaels talking bout playing gameboy priceles
Alfalfa and Rapping Roberto on the same set... sportscast icons.... oh, and there's Bill Simmons ;)
Every time Costas or Michaels show up, I think, must be something really big going on.
These two men are legends. I never get tired of hearing their perspectives. But someone in the studio needs to pan the 2-shot camera to the right! You're cutting Bob Costas in half! HBO is known for high production values but what happened here?
Just saw this all video how Michael’s is light years ahead of Costas.
interviewer is a dope
I didn't know Dave Bronstein was an announcer too.
He's a lawyer...the best there is...

Don't step on Al when he's talking....let the man finish.
bob costas had a face lift
I laughed when Al Michaels commented about Cris Collinsworth and Bill said he criticized him on Twitter! I can't stand Collinsworth!
The laughing audience is rough
there's an awful lot of positive comments in this comment section. maybe twitter is nastier. or maybe these two don't know what they're talking about.
More jobs in a field where just a fraction of a fraction can even manage to do it halfassed.

“We don’t even care what we think, why would anyone else?” Classic statement.
Baseketball Announcers
Al seems to wear the same clothes all the time.
this was cool but, who would plan to have these two giants on and only give them 9 minutes? silly.
You can tell Al and Bob dumbed themselves down for Bill Simmons. It’s frustrating when two men as experienced, intelligent and well spoken feel the need to play the dumb old man routine. False humility is not what I want out of these two in an interview

Simmons is under the illusion that people care what he thinks.
I love Al Michaels and Bob Kostas. I think they are two of the top five best of all time in my opinion.🇺🇸❤️🤍💙
encore bill bring those 2 back i feel like ive never heardcthem talk before even though i listen to them all the time
