For this somewhat theoretical/advanced tutorial, I want to emphasize that even though I made it sound like playing with items is a legitimate way to play the game, individual player skill is just as important. It doesn't matter how good you are with items if you can't do the shortcuts and keep up a line. This video is targeted toward mid level players that want to go to the next level, not beginners who just want to get lucky. (I mean cmon, if you aren't fast then you can't pick and chose your item spots, don't be silly.)
Also I'm aware that at a higher level, some of the examples I gave about predicting shocks may not necessarily work, as, when playing against other good players, they can predict YOU predicting their shock, making them use the shock in a weird or unpredictable way, this level of mind-games is only really done at a high level but I did want to mention that.

Fake, probability of a shock jumps to 100% when your jumping over the gaps on sherbet land
And 110% when you're jumping on the shrooms in the cave in Mushroom Gorge

100000% when your Star or Bullet ends and one second after the canon.

and 100000000% right when you finally get a decent item

7:07 As a CS student, I have a pretty confident guess.
What if it _didn’t_ have this default item? Then the probability charts and additional restrictions (rental items etc.) would have to be constructed such that _under no circumstance_ - that is, it should be _mathematically impossible_ that an item box could run out of options. This is a challenging task and leaves less freedom to the game designer.
With a decent default item like the Mushroom - useful for everybody regardless of position - this problem is easily solved: in the rare case that there’s no ‘legal’ item for a certain position at a certain time, the game uses a default.
Let's be real, people will still complain about getting unlucky. At least now you know the math behind how unlucky unlucky is ;)

The example at 6:51 is incorrect. Stars have a hold limit of 3 so as soon as someone uses a star there is another one available. So two other people would have to be holding stars for that probability to apply.

@@PotatoSam3 stars currently in use don't count as "held" items apparently. But for some reason bullet bills do... I guess maybe because the bullet bill still shows in your inventory unlike a star which you can chain into another item
Troy mentioned that one will always get a mushroom after grabbing 15 item boxes, which rarely happens.
Also the new flounder fest video demonstrates what pure item luck looks like.

After all this years I still wonder about why you get single mushrooms in first after using like 15 item boxes in a race.

I have a question. When you drive through an item box, will spamming the item button to get an item as fast as possible instead of waiting for the game to choose it for you change the outcome of which item you get?
The game chooses your item as soon as you touch the item box, so no, waiting is almost never beneficial unless you want to make a potential TC last until the finish line lap 3 (such as the last moving set on bc3, the set where the gv cut is, rMR last set, etc)
@@SgtGuy that's not what they mean... they mean, if you were to press, for example nunchuck, Z repeatedly, it will roll your item faster. yes. it takes around 4 to 5 fast presses (after hitting said set) to get the fastest roll however, in doing so, you have the chance of accidently spamming your item as soon as it's ready. sometimes, online you may come across a bug which prevents you from fast rolling and can be very inconvenient. but of course this doesn't change what item you'll get.

I wish I could have talked about this a long time ago, I'd like to say that this video sums it up perfectly on how to get better in Lounge. I can't really speak on it because I'm banned, and ashamed I have to say I alted to figure out that this theory works really well, but I went from bronze to gold in 3 days using just items, no good lines required. If you don't believe me, then that's on you.

Was wondering whether the infographic @5:53 was the same for all item modes (Balanced/Aggressive/Strategic)? I know that in Aggressive/Frantic mode you can get triple mushrooms in 3rd so I was wondering if this was different?
Also if you have a table for item chance% depending on placing for Aggressive/Frantic mode could you please link it? I can't find it anywhere!

if an item is used, like if you chain a star, get another item but you're still in your star or if you pull out your triple reds, the slot for these items isnt occupied anymore. other than that the video is pretty accurate

Once i was frontrunning in first place, and i got a fake item box 5 times in a row, and considering its a 5% chance to get one in first place, i want to know those odds.
Edit: if it helps, i was playing singleplayer in grand prix.

At what VR can I consider my self good? And what are the best ways to practice good lines?
VR isn't really a good/accurate representation for skill, but most people agree if you can consistently hang around 8k - 9k without grinding that's decent. Also the best way to practice lines is to just play against other decent players in wws or frooms (not learning lines, learning lines do it in a time trial setting).
I hate being in low-level rooms. I tend to expect people to chain but they spam the shock; especially worse when most players are high-level and it's just the one low-level dude in last completely screwing me; I've been stuck in the 7500-8000vr range for months.

What if one player disconnects during a race, say in a 12 player room, do after the disconnect apply item probabilities for a 11 player room?
That's correct! If someone drops from a room the probability drops as well.
How did those people find out the item probability for this game and find out about how many people can have them? Was it a bunch or testing or did they find the games code or something like that?
3:26 i’ve gotten TCs in 1st multiple times, some i think where probably just janky position tracking on CTs, idk if the amount of players changes it but i am confused
Some custon tracks have particular item boxes which only give a certain item for instance haunted woods has a tc only box
Yes i know, I believe one of the versions of final grounds also had a tc box
Keep in mind that the item you get is dependent on your placement at the time of box entry and not when you get the item.

I just came back to this video to see the chart because something just happened that seemed off. I was playing online in a two person lobby and got a blue shell. Any explanation for that?

against bots you should always run, they aren't fast enough to keep up if you got good lines with a good combo.

On mirror i seem to get smashed alot just before the finish so i end up like 5th instead of 1st..
@@Tom-pk4gl The best combo is Funky Kong with the Flame Runner (or Bowser Bike if you're from Europe)
I'm the opposite of a lot of players. My playstyle relies mostly on item strategy because my driving is extremely mediocre

I looked it up and it said open up ports etc and I did that but it didn't work

When did you download it? CTHP WiimmFi has a built in thing where you have to wait 7 days before you can play online, and it needs to be on a new license made after installation unless the existing license was updated or something like that

Was this your first time connecting to wiimmfi? I think 86400 is the timeout code anyway but don't quote me on that.

It's pretty easy to do. There is a step by step tutorial on the official ctgp-website chadsoft.co.uk/ or you can just watch a tutorial by Troy (for the Wii version) or Tombwarrior (for the Wii U version).

I do coaching on my streams, it's the natural progression for players once they get good, they want to spread the knowledge to newer players.

It's actually possible to get a single shroom in 12th place, and we all hate it.
It's statistically impossible, but you get it because of an overflow in the game's code.
It's possible to get triple mushrooms in 12th place.

@@ben1ben it should just upscale it to 720, thats what my Wii U does. Also, you can download the DLLs and put them in the dolphin directory.
