I watched a number of videos and this was best. It included math, how to press seams, etc all which makes mitered borders less of a nightmare. However, there was more ripping than I’d like which means I will NOT do this again except for fancy decorator pillows. For quilts, quilting hides the conventional, non-mitering way of sewing borders and that is what I’ll do from now on. Too much of a pain to miter. But thank you for sharing your knowledge, it truly was the most complete and easy to follow.

I was terrified of mitered borders when I started quilting. I use the same technique as you did and once I had done a few, I was confident. There really isn't a reason to fear mitered corners and they look beautiful❣️ Thanks for sharing.

I am wodering if you have a flowered border with one stripe if the stripes will match up using this method. I am going to try this to see as i have a quilt that has a striped border. I have yet to make this quilt but am hoping to possibly make it this year. I have had it in kit box WAY too long!
Yes - as long as the borders are cut exactly the same, the stripes will match up and create a beautiful miter. You need to make sure, when pinning, that you pay close attention to aligning the stripes before sewing. It should align "naturally" but pinning to keep them aligned before sewing is very helpful. Good Luck!
I love this video but I have one question. When you mark the corner stopping point in the beginning, you are doing this on the back of the quilt top, or on the front? Back makes sense to me, but then I’d need to lay the quilt top on top of the borders to attach them, right sides together, of course. 😊
Yes - you mark the back of the quilt top with the dots. The borders are placed under the quilt top and just smooth them together (do not stretch them), and pin in place.
I use the width of the border strips BEFORE I add them to my quilt. If I have cut one (1) 3.0" strip for my border, then I simply use the 3.0" measurement as my width of border. If I have pieced two (2) strips together such as a 2.0" strip plus a 3.0" strip, I would use the width measurement of the strip AFTER they are sewn together but BEFORE they are added to the quilt top (which would be a 4.5" border strip measurement, since you are treating them as one unit.) What if you want to match the pattern of your border on a mitered corner? How do you plan that out?????Thank you. I have a floral border vine design that I want to match up
I'm afraid I don't have an answer for that issue. Your border length and the "repeat" within the fabric you are using will most likely be a stumbling block in getting both horizontal and vertical border patterns to match in the miter and still have a taut border. I hope you find an answer! I'm sure it will be beautiful.
I’m a little nervous to do this, but am charging forward, nonetheless. Quick question, with the corner inside bit that was measured initially and leave untouched-do we hand stitch it down? Or is it meant to hide behind the seam? Hope this makes sense.
I don't do any handstitching when I miter a corner. I'm not quite sure what corner you're referring to...if you could give me a timestamp on the video I can give you a better answer. It's really an easy process...I KNOW you can do it.
Yes - we look at the double border as one unit. 2.0" cut strip + 3.5" cut strip = 1.5" finished + 3.0" finished = 4.5" finished + .25" + 25" seam allowance on each side of the double border. That gives a total width of the double border BEFORE it's added to the quilt of 5.0".
Hello Mary. We would like to recommend your video to our readers. First, we need some clarification. At 5:31 in this video, you say that the seams for the horizontal borders must be pressed towards the outside of the quilt and the seams for the vertical borders must be pressed towards the inside of the quilt. But at 12:53, when you press the corner seams open, your video shows that where your borders are joined to the body of the quilt, both the horizontal and vertical seams are pressed towards the body of the quilt. That's what your video shows. And we also have found in order to press the corner seams open and to press the small piece of fabric with the dot towards the body of the quilt, both vertical AND horizontal seams must be pressed in the same direction - towards the body of the quilt. Can you clarify the discrepancy between what you are saying at 5:31 and at 12:53? Thank you so much, from Quilt Inspiration.
The seams that are pressed in opposite directions are where the inner and outer border is sewn together, not the "double border" where the inner + outer border is sewn to the quilt top. This allows you to nest the two borders when creating the mitered corner. At 12:53 you can see the inner and outer borders are pressed in opposite directions, but the borders' connections to the quilt top are pressed toward the border (not the body of the quilt). The corner with the dot is not pressed toward the body of the quilt, but rather toward the outside corner of the quilt and the diagonal seam that is pressed open is under tucked under the dotted corner that is overlapping it. I don't have any problem with the corner laying flat - as you can see when I turn it over. I hope that clarifies things for you. Thanks so much for sharing!

Yes - you piece them together and then treat them as a single border when mitering the corners. Make sure you press the horizontal borders in one direction and the vertical borders in the opposite direction so you can nest your seams when you miter the corners. Good luck!
Hello, I have a question! It is not clear to me when you measure the border, if you include the 1/4" seam allowance (unfinished), or if you are measuring for the finished border (finished). Thank you.
When I sew the 2" and 3 1/2" border strips together the unfinished size is 5.0". That's the size that I used in my calculations for the length of the border strips. In the end, it really doesn't matter - 1/4" to 1/2" won't make a difference when you're mitering. There's still a bit of excess that you'll cut off and that small amount won't be an issue. When you're measuring the border don't even think about the 1/4" that you marked. You only did that you give you a starting point when you start to sew. Hope this helps.
I am making a table runner with 3 borders. I want to do mitered corners but I am confused about the measurements for the borders. Each border makes the runner larger so I don't understand how to get the right measurement for the 3 borders. HELP!
The measurements you are taking in order to calculate the borders are the horizontal and vertical sides of the quilt top WITHOUT borders. So, whatever that is, write those two numbers down. Those numbers will not change, no matter how many borders you add. You will treat the triple border as one border, once you've sewn the three strips together. I like to measure both horizontal sides to make sure they are the same measurement. If they are not the same, I add the 2 measurements together and divide by 2 and that gives me the average horizontal measurement. That helps to insure that my quilt is square when finished. I do the same for the vertical sides. The WIDTH of your borders is calculated by adding together the FINISHED size of each border plus 0.5". In other words, if you have 3 borders that are 1", 2" and 3" finished, that means you have cut your strips 1.5", 2.5" and 3.5" and sewn them together with a 1/4" seam allowance. The width of the triple border (once you have sewn them together) is: 1 + 2 + 3 + 0.5 " = 6.5". To determine the LENGTH of the horizontal borders, use the formula I provided: ADD TOGETHER: The horizontal measurement of your quilt top without borders + (6.5" x 2) + 4.0 = the horizontal length of your horizontal borders You will do the same for the vertical borders substituing in the vertical measurement of your quilt top without borders. I noticed that you don't have extra fabric when you bring the two pieces together. Am I suppose to have the same amount of fabric so that the two ends meet ? Hope this question makes sense!🤦♀️🤦♀️
When you say your border measures 5 inches, is that the finished measurement? Does it actually measure 5 1/4 inches? I’m making sure I do my calculations correctly.
There’s a few ways to do mitered corners. Math really isn’t necessary. Just have your strips be at least 4 inches longer than the sides. Find the centers of your strip and sides. Pin accordingly so you have an even amount hanging off the sides. Mark the 1/4” in and sew from 1/4” mark to 1/4” mark back stitching at each start and stop. Proceed with folding and marking your line to sew the corners.
It really depends on the number of border strips and the width of each border. You could run out of fabric if you have large borders or several borders that need to be marked. I find that doing the math keeps me in check.
You skipped a crucial step: attaching the borders. You only mentioned that you want the borders to overlap equally at the ends. What is the trick to ensuring the ends overlap equally? I imagine that you determine half-way point of the border in terms of total length and the total width of the top, side, or bottom of the quilt (depending on which one you're working on), then match the half-way points to ensure the border is centered on the quilt. Where do you begin sewing the borders on? Do you start at the edge of the quilt or from the "stop" point we created? I understand that the video is focused on the mitering, but if you don't position the border correctly or know how to attach it, you won't get the corners.
Yes - this is only about mitering the corners. When you attach any border to a quilt that is measured to be longer than the actual quilt top, you will center it on your quilt so that equal amounts are hanging off on each end - as you described. I begin sewing the border at the marked point and sew to the marked point at the other end of the side I am working on being very careful not to go past that marked point. So, from your comment, you are attaching the borders correctly. I hope the mitering instruction was helpful. Thanks for watching.

Wow Mary! I love mitered corners in what a wonderful explanation that was. I can remember when I first started quoting and I did multiple Borders. I put to each one separate. How ridiculous was that? I am wodering if you have a flowered border with one stripe if the stripes will match up using this method. I am going to try this to see as i have a quilt that has a striped border. I have yet to make this quilt but am hoping to possibly make it this year. I have had it in kit box WAY too long!
Yes - as long as the borders are cut exactly the same, the stripes will match up and create a beautiful miter. You need to make sure, when pinning, that you pay close attention to aligning the stripes before sewing. It should align "naturally" but pinning to keep them aligned before sewing is very helpful. I love this video but I have one question. When you mark the corner stopping point in the beginning, you are doing this on the back of the quilt top, or on the front? Back makes sense to me, but then I’d need to lay the quilt top on top of the borders to attach them, right sides together, of course. 😊
Yes - you mark the back of the quilt top with the dots. The borders are placed under the quilt top and just smooth them together (do not stretch them), and pin in place.

I use the width of the border strips BEFORE I add them to my quilt. If I have cut one (1) 3.0" strip for my border, then I simply use the 3.0" measurement as my width of border. If I have pieced two (2) strips together such as a 2.0" strip plus a 3.0" strip, I would use the width measurement of the strip AFTER they are sewn together but BEFORE they are added to the quilt top (which would be a 4.5" border strip measurement, since you are treating them as one unit.) I'm afraid I don't have an answer for that issue. Your border length and the "repeat" within the fabric you are using will most likely be a stumbling block in getting both horizontal and vertical border patterns to match in the miter and still have a taut border. I hope you find an answer! I'm sure it will be beautiful.

Yes it does. When I sew 2.0" strip to a 3.5" strip, that gives me a double border that measures 5.0" which includes seam allowances.

I don't do any handstitching when I miter a corner. I'm not quite sure what corner you're referring to...if you could give me a timestamp on the video I can give you a better answer. It's really an easy process...I KNOW you can do it.
I will have to do this but I have a question your borders you said it’s 5” is that the two borders together equal 5?
Yes - we look at the double border as one unit. 2.0" cut strip + 3.5" cut strip = 1.5" finished + 3.0" finished = 4.5" finished + .25" + 25" seam allowance on each side of the double border. That gives a total width of the double border BEFORE it's added to the quilt of 5.0".
Hello Mary. We would like to recommend your video to our readers. First, we need some clarification. At 5:31 in this video, you say that the seams for the horizontal borders must be pressed towards the outside of the quilt and the seams for the vertical borders must be pressed towards the inside of the quilt.
But at 12:53, when you press the corner seams open, your video shows that where your borders are joined to the body of the quilt, both the horizontal and vertical seams are pressed towards the body of the quilt. That's what your video shows. And we also have found in order to press the corner seams open and to press the small piece of fabric with the dot towards the body of the quilt, both vertical AND horizontal seams must be pressed in the same direction - towards the body of the quilt.
Can you clarify the discrepancy between what you are saying at 5:31 and at 12:53? Thank you so much, from Quilt Inspiration.
The seams that are pressed in opposite directions are where the inner and outer border is sewn together, not the "double border" where the inner + outer border is sewn to the quilt top. This allows you to nest the two borders when creating the mitered corner. At 12:53 you can see the inner and outer borders are pressed in opposite directions, but the borders' connections to the quilt top are pressed toward the border (not the body of the quilt). The corner with the dot is not pressed toward the body of the quilt, but rather toward the outside corner of the quilt and the diagonal seam that is pressed open is under tucked under the dotted corner that is overlapping it. I don't have any problem with the corner laying flat - as you can see when I turn it over. I hope that clarifies things for you. Thanks so much for sharing!

Can you piece your borders together since they are long?
Yes - you piece them together and then treat them as a single border when mitering the corners. Make sure you press the horizontal borders in one direction and the vertical borders in the opposite direction so you can nest your seams when you miter the corners. Good luck!
Hello, I have a question! It is not clear to me when you measure the border, if you include the 1/4" seam allowance (unfinished), or if you are measuring for the finished border (finished). Thank you.
When I sew the 2" and 3 1/2" border strips together the unfinished size is 5.0". That's the size that I used in my calculations for the length of the border strips. In the end, it really doesn't matter - 1/4" to 1/2" won't make a difference when you're mitering. There's still a bit of excess that you'll cut off and that small amount won't be an issue. When you're measuring the border don't even think about the 1/4" that you marked. You only did that you give you a starting point when you start to sew. Hope this helps.
I am making a table runner with 3 borders. I want to do mitered corners but I am confused about the measurements for the borders. Each border makes the runner larger so I don't understand how to get the right measurement for the 3 borders. HELP!
The measurements you are taking in order to calculate the borders are the horizontal and vertical sides of the quilt top WITHOUT borders. So, whatever that is, write those two numbers down. Those numbers will not change, no matter how many borders you add. You will treat the triple border as one border, once you've sewn the three strips together. I like to measure both horizontal sides to make sure they are the same measurement. If they are not the same, I add the 2 measurements together and divide by 2 and that gives me the average horizontal measurement. That helps to insure that my quilt is square when finished. I do the same for the vertical sides. The WIDTH of your borders is calculated by adding together the FINISHED size of each border plus 0.5". In other words, if you have 3 borders that are 1", 2" and 3" finished, that means you have cut your strips 1.5", 2.5" and 3.5" and sewn them together with a 1/4" seam allowance. The width of the triple border (once you have sewn them together) is: 1 + 2 + 3 + 0.5 " = 6.5". To determine the LENGTH of the horizontal borders, use the formula I provided:
ADD TOGETHER:
The horizontal measurement of your quilt top without borders
+ (6.5" x 2)
+ 4.0
= the horizontal length of your horizontal borders
You will do the same for the vertical borders substituing in the vertical measurement of your quilt top without borders. I hope that helps, Kathleen.
I noticed that you don't have extra fabric when you bring the two pieces together. Am I suppose to have the same amount of fabric so that the two ends meet ? Hope this question makes sense!🤦♀️🤦♀️
I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking. I’m sorry.
When you say your border measures 5 inches, is that the finished measurement? Does it actually measure 5 1/4 inches? I’m making sure I do my calculations correctly.
That’s the size before it’s sewn onto the quilt.
There’s a few ways to do mitered corners. Math really isn’t necessary. Just have your strips be at least 4 inches longer than the sides. Find the centers of your strip and sides. Pin accordingly so you have an even amount hanging off the sides. Mark the 1/4” in and sew from 1/4” mark to 1/4” mark back stitching at each start and stop. Proceed with folding and marking your line to sew the corners.
It really depends on the number of border strips and the width of each border. You could run out of fabric if you have large borders or several borders that need to be marked. I find that doing the math keeps me in check.

If you are making a double border, you sew the 2 border strips together (inner and outer) and then treat it as one border when it comes to measuring.

You skipped a crucial step: attaching the borders. You only mentioned that you want the borders to overlap equally at the ends.
What is the trick to ensuring the ends overlap equally?
I imagine that you determine half-way point of the border in terms of total length and the total width of the top, side, or bottom of the quilt (depending on which one you're working on), then match the half-way points to ensure the border is centered on the quilt.
Where do you begin sewing the borders on? Do you start at the edge of the quilt or from the "stop" point we created?
I understand that the video is focused on the mitering, but if you don't position the border correctly or know how to attach it, you won't get the corners.
Yes - this is only about mitering the corners. When you attach any border to a quilt that is measured to be longer than the actual quilt top, you will center it on your quilt so that equal amounts are hanging off on each end - as you described. I begin sewing the border at the marked point and sew to the marked point at the other end of the side I am working on being very careful not to go past that marked point. So, from your comment, you are attaching the borders correctly. I hope the mitering instruction was helpful. Thanks for watching.
