It's pretty obvious that they put an official switch dock inside of it, which is pretty cool, but they probably ripped open a USB c adapter and put the guts inside. My bet is that the USB c adapter goes from AC 120 volts-> 15 volts DC (or some other constant voltage) -> whatever the switch asks for So my guess is that it's completely safe because they can just take out the part of the adapter that turns 120 VAC to whatever constant DC voltage that powers the USB c adapter (probably 15V). And after they take that out, they can just feed the official Nintendo controller board whatever DC voltage it needs. I hope that isn't confusing, I'm bad at English and on mobile.
You can't take a TV to a friends house or party. plus a you won't get a TV nearly that size for the money. I haven't owned a TV in years because about a decade ago I got into projectors. My first was a 720p Epson and it was great for movies and games. Eventually I went with a BenQ and Optoma because of higher performance and lower lag but my point is a projector is fine as an only display especially if it's an LED like this. The only reason I won't recommend this is because you can't plug in any other HDMI device.
@@alphacompton if there is a Will there is a way. I'm quite used to packing up and entire pc set up into my car and on vacations a TV set up for consoles. Just got to be a little extra careful which at the same time is the same problems with projectors. They're very fragile to any impacts.
Compton Boodhoo I mean, not as easily that is and you are totally right about the size. There is a magic to projectors, but they are behind in some regards to a standard flat screen, such as speaker quality and HDMI ports. Maybe Ill get into projectors for some casual use and skip mounting the tv to the wall hahah.
Compton Boodhoo You've been away for way too long time, it's a bit difficult to give advices on something you haven't used for a decade, isn't it? You ain't getting nowhere with this projector, and a TV with a far better resolution will cost you less. Obviously it cannot be portable, but if you know when and where the party is you can bring that with you anyway, in the unlikely situation that your friend doesn't have a single TV in his house
I pick up the Viewsonic M1. Small, great speakers, 6 hour battery life, and can be used with anything. Played smash on a few times and works out really great. If you really need a protable projector M1 is a safe bet.
I've seen this dock before, but that's basically a way to double the price of the Switch if you already have a TV... Great video as always though! And Happy New Year!
OR you could just buy a regular HDMI projector and connect it to your Switch? I understand the convenience in this one but it only takes a few seconds to plug in the HDMI, and I'd rather take those few seconds than risk breaking my Switch. Also, you most likely aren't going to be playing your Switch on a projector THAT often, and if you get an HDMI projector for the same price, you can still use it for other things. Just my take on the product.
Projectors are awesome. I remember when I was younger there was a party at my moms friend's brother's house(lol), her brother and husband set up a projector on the side of the house and we played Halo all night. This was when it first came out, it was mind blowing at that age, up there with playing GTA3 for the first time when it dropped.
I have a 3rd party mini dock that I’ve had no issues with. They even provided an update to fix the bricking issues under the current firmware at the time of those issues but I still used the official power supply for it. Now, I also have an Optoma Pico Projector. It’s native 1080p (no scaling), got it on sale around 3yrs ago for $550 down from 1K. It’s smaller than the one in this video. Only negative I have is the speakers aren’t the best (sound like mono) and to get better, you have to plug in their proprietary VGA adapter which has a female 3.5mm jack for external speakers. It accepts both HDMI (port) and VGA (using the adapter). Even has a tripod screw thread on the bottom.
To be honest I have been wanting a portable/semi-portable projector that I can take with me and use with my Switch and other devices. A big reason is because on holidays I go up and visit my parents who live four hours away so it is typically staying a night or two and my boyfriend and I stay in the basement with an old big 30-some inch CRT TV. Over the years we have never been able to find a cable to take HDMI to composite or AV, and the TV only has AV. One Christmas I got a mini monitor, but it was 7 inches, so why bother with that when it is just as big as the switch screen, that is more for tech repair I do anyway. They then moved an old like 11 inch TV and it had an HDMI port. It was 4:3, but it worked last thanksgiving. Funny enough we finally found the HDMI to AV cable being sold at Walmart after we got back home, and we have that to use now. Only problem is it really downgrades the quality. Like, 244p or less and only in 4:3 regardless of TV dimensions. Still, on a big enough screen it is enough to play a round of Mario Party or Kart or Smash. So, even if portable projectors have a wee bit of lag, a tad bit of blur or lower resolution of 480p-720p, and a lower refresh rate, it would still be better and easier than lugging around a big TV or monitor. So projectors definitely have a place, but even that being said I would not pay more than 150usd for one just to play a couple rounds of Smash/Party/Kart/Etc. I mean, I am willing to bring a folded bed sheet, or other generic white cloth to pin up to make it work, but for like one week out of a year. That is like 7/365 days at best that this thing is going to benefit me, and that is including chances to use this at some friend-BBQ hang out.
Dont know why youre afraid of the warning label for lead and mercury. Its in the bulb. its warning you not to break the glass, its fine to open the case. Its not like a lead haze is going to come out once you unscrew it.
I went a different route. I took the innards of an official dock and reshelled them in a compact shell thats the size of the dock circuit board itself, then got a nebula capsule projecter. Currently waiting on the nebula capsule 2 to arrive as its brighter and does 720p unlike the first but maintains the coke can size.
Latency is entirely dependent on the chipset of the projector, not the DLP mirror. The DLP mirror goes at like 32khz, so like 533 flicks PER FRAME. But only in black and white. So the colors are flashed to fill in red/green/blue and our brain blends those colors together over time. On the plus side, this means that every DLP pixel is a single pixel. No red/green/blue subpixels, 'cause color is all temporal. But yeah, if you get any perceptible latency (over 1 frame), the chipset in that projector sucks. My 1080p Vivitek projector looks fine, and mirroring a display, I don't see any diff between it and my low-latency monitor. For bricking they wouldn't actually put real dock guts in there. They would just have the same power transfer limiters Nintendo sues. I think it's some kind of resistor setup. But yeah, if they can't even manage latency properly, I don't trust that claim. My Avegant Glyph (a PORTABLE 720p DLP headset) doesn't have latency problems.
I literally bought a pocket projector from walmart for 100 bucks and if you plug a portable battery pack to the switch, it will act in docked mode for projector, super portable, and super cheap with no input lag.
nintendo made a statement about the 3rd party dock with power, it has to have the 56k pull up resistor in order to keep power surges and over power from reaching the unit, if it has those its safe, same for using power banks the cable needs the same resistor in it
Backyard Theater is awesome, something our family has been doing for a few years now but - I just spent a little more on getting a good, bright, 1080P projector - worth it... it was for the kids ;-)
Best Buy’s dock is actually really good, I’ve been using it since before BrickGate and haven’t had any problems. I highly recommend it. I switch my console from third party to nintendo dock and no fear of it bricking :)
Honestly if Nintendo just put out an official smaller travel dock it would probably solve a lot of problems for folks. I have a FastSnail dock and the only real issues I’ve had are due to it not supporting HDCP, but I still try not to use it too much.
I've been using the Niko dock for a while and I haven't come up with any issues. This is literally the fist time I am hearing about Bricking. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I haven't had any issues.
i don't think the power adapter should be an issue of concern, the unit itself takes power to run so you'd need more than just what the switch would use. If you tear it apart I'm sure there is a bulky power rail for everything with resisted leads going to both the projector and the switch dock.
Excellent video, I've been watching a few vids of yours since I got a Switch Black Friday but this one just made me a subscriber. I have years of experience with projectors and home theaters in general, I'm impressed with what you showed. I'm wondering if you did any type of editing or filtering for this video during the demo on the wall, I'm going to assume that you turned off all lights and recorded at night but even so for that price the quality looks really good. 720P LED at that price and including a battery seems too good to be true. This was a really good find. I would buy one in a heartbeat if I could plug in other HDMI devices to it. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of friends to play local multiplayer with anymore but if I did , I'd already be ordering this. ( I have my own lowish lag HD projector that I occasionally take out)
OJO probably ghosted you because they feared that you would scare people out of buying their product when you talk about the dangers of it being an off brand dock/charger.
Personally I am already set with a portable setup....I bought a second dock which I frankensteined into a small form factor case that fits in my pocket and then got a portable projector connecting to the dock like H96P - there are quite a few better projectors of this size out there but this was cheap enough and good enough for the time I bought it...plus it's like a big smartphone size wise- Currently I am looking to upgrade to WOWOTO T8E which is again a portable projector, but it is actually a really good one from what I've seen
Hey, I just saw your video about the 3rd party docs and portable batteries, and I am really glad that I did because my friends and I all just got Switches for Christmas. I was going to make the best portable Switch set-up I possibly could, and had portable dock, battery case and everything picked out... and then I found your video haha. However I had already ordered the FastSnail dock, and I wanted to know if you thought it would be ok to just use that as basically a USB port for another accessory while I’m on the go, and not plug any kind of power source into it. I’m completely fine with returning it if you think it’s a bad idea, but it would awesome if it would work
I think it’s cool and worth trying .. I would try it since I have the extra geek squad protection plan for my switch and also amazon sells the projector too but would buy it a Best Buy to add the extra geek squad protection.
I mean, you say its a big risk but after the longest time doing research, the insignia dock is the only one that I know of that doesn't brick the switch and has no reports of doing so, if this device and the insignia dock use the same dock hardware, I could happily believe this would be fine for regular use but, you are right, it is use at your own risk, but still if I were a betting man I'd bet this one is okay.
Apparently HDMI CEC being enabled in the Switch settings is what causes "bricking". Still it's not worth the risk like you said. $300 for something that can only be used with the switch is not worth it at all IMO.
My projector doesn’t seem great but I can promise you the refresh rate must be amazing cause there is not polling rate lag between the screen and controller
Has anyone actually *tried* to brick their console on this AAXA projector? That's the video I want to watch. Is this whole "3rd party docks brick your console meme" still legitimate, or is it just falsely perpetuated by paranoia? There have been a lot of new docks in the time that Nintendo officially warned about using them, so I'm curious if the issue is still known to occur on these new one's. I don't want hearsay, or "don't risk it" adages, I just want to know if these concerns are legit.
Joseph Zoeller it’s not going to just “go away” it’s specifically because the USB-C architecture Nintendo used is just fucky and ONLY Nintendo knows the specific programming for it. There are companies out there that claim they’ve “figured it out” but none of them have “figured it out” enough to not put a disclaimer on their websites/ product boxes. If you want to take the risk go for it, but YOU take ALL the risk.
Tekno77 it’s a dock, other than making a dock that lets you play handheld at the same time for something like a Mario maker port, you don’t need other options. It’s 50 bucks and remembering that it used to be $90 to keep up with stock demands, it’s a steal to have an extra official one for $50 now from Nintendo instead of $90.
Tekno77 what do you mean? it’s the same one that comes with the console. They’re $90 MSRP and retailers sell them for 50-60 regularly. I have 3, one for each room, and they even sell the official power supply as just a USB brick now.
A large majority of it is paranoia, but can you blame us? Switches on 3rd party docks will seemingly be working fine for months, and then one day all of a sudden just stop working. There's no known fix for this issue because these companies don't understand how the Switch works with Nintendo's own dock and they just use generic USB-C power delivery standards. Switches bricking on 3rd party docks are a rare occurrence, but I CANNOT recommend somebody use a 3rd party dock as their main dock if it's that much more unsafe than an official dock. It just isn't worth it.
Question...are you going to be reviewing the "A Gummie Life" game from the eShop. And do you have anything to say about the Switch cracking. Hoping to get a Switch (FINALLY) and am worried about the cracking issue. Love your videos, keep up the great work!
Hi bob idk if you remember me but i am the twelve year old gamer and i just got my Nintendo switch for christmas and i love it and i think that if you should get an adapter it should be the LAN adapter and not the "aaxa"
I just Connect my official Switch Dock to my home theater projector via HDMI. It’s not a portable solution but it also carries no risk of bricking my Switch.
I bought a $30 (US$25?) HDMI dock adaptor thats just a adaptor+small wire which fits easily into my carrying case Used it multiple times and it works fine with my Switch + just read reviews imo the third-party dock scare is no longer that scary just make sure to read reviews Official dock is a huge pain to bring around, would never do that
His P.O. Box is on his about tab, I don’t know if that’s recent though so look for a recent video with the address. Don’t expect to get it back though if you’re really wanting to send it as he’s probably always busy.
@@ddub1253 If someone is interested in a product there's no reason not to review it from a friend/fan unless he's busy with other reviews and products.
I think there is a reason to buy a third party dock, which is the official one will wear on your screen, I was super careful, used the dock 4 or 5 times before my screen protector arrived, and it still got a slight rub on the bottom left corner, which I was very angry about. Then I heard about the bricking and I was forced to keep using the dock, so I just leave it in there now and it goes to my TV.
Why not just use the regular dock and connect that to a separate projector? That shouldn’t brick the switch at all. It’s just a cord to plug into the projector. Yeah there may be some input lag, but it wouldn’t be noticeable
I can find a switch dock with inbuilt projector, but a dock with an Inbuilt android device, a Dock with an Inbuilt HDMI splitter, a Dock with HDMI and AV out, and..... yeah I want a switch dog with an AV output just to play Nintendo Switch on the real gaming screen, a CRT TV or CRT Monitor.
WULFF DEN, you can't expect them to use the same official charger because it wouldn't provide enough power to the Switch and the projector at the same time. The dock otherwise is probably an official ripped dock, but yea I wouldn't try dock mode off the battery but it looks like you ran it just fine plugged into power and I'm going to assume that's fine for now until you or someone else makes a video about their bricked Switch.
Interestingly as a serious guitar hero player who can't play on televisions with lots of lag I had uniquely lag free experiences on my projectors. I can't remember the one I used but it was one of the most lag free experiences I'd had.
It depends on the chip, and the settings you put it on. My projector has a fine mode, and a fast mode. Fine mode will give you a better picture quality at the expense of being a few frames extra behind. Fast mode is a slightly worse picture at the benefit of less lag. That being said, I'm not entirely sensitive to lag, and I play my video games in fine mode, and don't notice any real lag.
given that projectors wear out stupidly fast compared to any display and that you basically need wall power anyways to use this properly.. it seems pretty useless to me even without any bricking of other issues. would love to take this thing apart and have a look inside tho
Is this a DLP projector, or is it an LCD one? DLPs generally get you the better brightness and significantly better image quality, but suffer from the lag between colour channels. These portable projectors are often LCD ones. They basically shine a bright LED through an LCD screen inside the projector, and, as such, should have input lag not too dissimilar from your average LCD screen. I'm not saying zero lag, but most people would compare playing on a projector to playing on a TV, and I doubt the lag would be too different.
So is the only concern with switches being bricked by using a 3rd party dock/power adapter? I might be super paranoid but I want a Gamecube adapter for my switch but the official one is extremely hard to find. I just want to make sure that a third party adapter won't mess with my switch.
if you are going to invest that kind of money in a projector, why not get a regular one, with good quality colours or whatever, and use the HDMI cable that comes with the switch? Maybe it's a bit more cumbersome but at least your switch is safe.
the same company makes another model named P300 which is smaller than this projector and it has HDMI input with again internal battery and stuff. much more usable and you dont have to worry about 3rd party docking etc i would definitely buy it instead of this product.
Uhh ill pass on this lol don't wanna take that risk with my switch...keep up the great content for 2019 and happy new yr I'm still surprised I actually met you in real life at the train station lol
It's pretty obvious that they put an official switch dock inside of it, which is pretty cool, but they probably ripped open a USB c adapter and put the guts inside. My bet is that the USB c adapter goes from
AC 120 volts-> 15 volts DC (or some other constant voltage) -> whatever the switch asks for
So my guess is that it's completely safe because they can just take out the part of the adapter that turns 120 VAC to whatever constant DC voltage that powers the USB c adapter (probably 15V). And after they take that out, they can just feed the official Nintendo controller board whatever DC voltage it needs.
I hope that isn't confusing, I'm bad at English and on mobile.
Your comment should be higher. Unfortunately he didn't get that.
With that in mind, am I able to use my official Nintendo power adapter to push it?
It’s just a rectifier and relay.
Wow the biggest problem with my Switch is it's mere ONE TIMES speakers! This changes everything

Unfortunately I don't have a lot of friends to play local multiplayer with anymore but if I did , I'd already be ordering this. ( I have my own lowish lag HD projector that I occasionally take out)
it's not your hair bro.
OJO probably ghosted you because they feared that you would scare people out of buying their product when you talk about the dangers of it being an off brand dock/charger.
How is that legal to refuse sale to a reviewer?
Light through an LCD is another method of projector, they tend to be a lot darker... BUT... the input lag is no different then a screen.
Looks like a good project for @spawnwave to find out what's inside this projector. Great video...
as long as it don't brick your Switch like that one dock did (that i heard of) or mess up something in it
Hey, I just saw your video about the 3rd party docs and portable batteries, and I am really glad that I did because my friends and I all just got Switches for Christmas.
Man, this thing is undeniably cool. Kinda want if I'm honest.
I mean it looks pretty good. If it wasnt for the fact its not official I would totally buy one.
I used my isngnia dock yesterday and it still works fine
i dropped my phone yesterday and it still works fine
I shot sparks multiple times reconnecting the positive terminal on my car battery while negative was on and it still works fine
I drove the wrong way down the street at high speeds drunk and on coke and i'm fine. 😊👍
Perfect for smash at school
Happy New Year Bob!
Did you ever tried the Nebula capsule size mini projector? It's the size of a Coke can and projects a big image, has a HDMI port, and worth the $300.
@@WulffDen Months, damn. It suddenly sounds infeasible to make a video about it then, that's too bad
You should make a video of the projector in 1080p. It can actually project in 1080p
Question...are you going to be reviewing the "A Gummie Life" game from the eShop. And do you have anything to say about the Switch cracking. Hoping to get a Switch (FINALLY) and am worried about the cracking issue. Love your videos, keep up the great work!
Nice review and happy new year everybody!
My friend uses one and its pretty awesome, I thought he paid less then 300$ though I think he said it was closer to 200$
I bought a 180 dollar portable projector and commented by hdmi cable. I could get a 150 inch image with little to no lag.
Well I use a insignia dock all the time. No issues.
I bought a $30 (US$25?) HDMI dock adaptor thats just a adaptor+small wire which fits easily into my carrying case
Used it multiple times and it works fine with my Switch + just read reviews
imo the third-party dock scare is no longer that scary
just make sure to read reviews
Official dock is a huge pain to bring around, would never do that
The awsomest thing in life is playing ULTRA Street Fighter II : The Final Challengers on a projector everywhere 🎓 anywhere
Will we ever exit third party dock terror-land?
that's my home
@@WulffDen It is technically a "home" except everybody stole your furniture and sometimes when someone enters a room he bursts into flames.
Hey Bob I have a OJO projector. I can send it to you if you would like to review it.
Yea he's gunna review a product that a fan sent when the actual company ignored him? That's not how a review goes down
"The company is shit, but the people that purchased the OJO are pretty cool"
I think there is a reason to buy a third party dock, which is the official one will wear on your screen, I was super careful, used the dock 4 or 5 times before my screen protector arrived, and it still got a slight rub on the bottom left corner, which I was very angry about. Then I heard about the bricking and I was forced to keep using the dock, so I just leave it in there now and it goes to my TV.
Smash party sound good.
Buying all the Jo-con cost way too much unless a friend has their own switch...
I'm actually kinda suprised Nintendo hasn't made their own projector yet
I originally replied to this comment with a snarky reply to someone else so i'm sorry you had to see that but also hey :)
@@WulffDen didnt even see the snarky reply so your all good lmao but also, hey lol
I’m not, but I’m surprised they haven’t made an updated dock yet.
Why not just use the regular dock and connect that to a separate projector? That shouldn’t brick the switch at all. It’s just a cord to plug into the projector. Yeah there may be some input lag, but it wouldn’t be noticeable
Hey man, where did you get the golden joycon? It looks really cool!
alexelmanco 34 he did a mod on it he’s mentioned it on a video before
I tought it was pronounced o-joe but the colored logo makes sense because it looks like orange juice.
I watched, not only you have a good sense of humor, freddo from the god father.
The mirror mini projector is like 160 and it has a hdmi and its smaller than this by like 4x
Why not just buy a 60 dollar 1080p mini projecter on Amazon?
lol because those are 480p resolution and a brightness of like 40 lumens
My Mate Vince did a good video on this topic
WULFF DEN, you can't expect them to use the same official charger because it wouldn't provide enough power to the Switch and the projector at the same time. The dock otherwise is probably an official ripped dock, but yea I wouldn't try dock mode off the battery but it looks like you ran it just fine plugged into power and I'm going to assume that's fine for now until you or someone else makes a video about their bricked Switch.
I’ll keep my switch by myself and avoid the risk. I value my switch but not my friends. They never pay for it. Btw. Love your honest review
Is there a brick emoji? I have a phobia of anything 3rd party that keeps constant contact with my switch. But this does look pretty cool.
I'm sure whatever Switch revisions come soon will update the usbc for less risk.
given that projectors wear out stupidly fast compared to any display and that you basically need wall power anyways to use this properly.. it seems pretty useless to me even without any bricking of other issues.
would love to take this thing apart and have a look inside tho
You said to avoid 3rd party docks, but I have a rechargeable case for my switch, does that also count as a 3rd party dock?
can u just plug the HDMI from the dock to a projector?
I assume the Lead is the solder and the Cobalt is in the battery
Is this a DLP projector, or is it an LCD one? DLPs generally get you the better brightness and significantly better image quality, but suffer from the lag between colour channels. These portable projectors are often LCD ones. They basically shine a bright LED through an LCD screen inside the projector, and, as such, should have input lag not too dissimilar from your average LCD screen. I'm not saying zero lag, but most people would compare playing on a projector to playing on a TV, and I doubt the lag would be too different.
Will be this useful, If I don't have a Nintendo Switch?
Uhh ill pass on this lol don't wanna take that risk with my switch...keep up the great content for 2019 and happy new yr
I'm still surprised I actually met you in real life at the train station lol
LOL what's up man? (⌐■‿■)
