Calgary Highlanders' St Julien Parade 27 April 2024 in Calgary

For the first time in five years, the Calgary Highlanders exercised their right to the Freedom of the City of Calgary, which was first conferred on this Army Reserve unit in 1964. The Highlanders perpetuate the 10th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. The night of 22/23 April 1915, following the Germans' use of chlorine gas near Ypres, the 10th and 16th Battalions CEF counter-attacked at Kitcheners' Wood in an effort to blunt the German advance. This was Canada's first major attack during the First World War and casualties were high. A plaque on Old City Hall commemorates the 10th Battalion and this action. The Highlanders mark the Battle of St Julien (Second Battle of Ypres) every April.
