Thank you! I just received plants the size of the one that is restarting for you. I do not have an Ikea cabinet, so I really appreciated your suggestion on creating my own. I am moving all my existing plants to moss poles. Some love it, and others are slower at adjusting . The plant soil you use saved some of my Philodendron by providing a breathable soil. Philodendron and Monstera are my favorites. Thank you so much, and Happy Growing.

I am a person who is attached to things. This can be furniture, favorite sweaters, or even plants. So it's much nicer to grow a tiny offshoot than to buy an adult plant! We grow older together almost like buddies.
Yes... and of course it's cheaper, and not so space-consuming in the beginning. Great video again, Jan! 🥳

We in India recognise the word batik easily as it is a form of printing on clothes using empty spaces and wax. May be plant community has taken the word batik from batik printing. Recently I bought a syngonium from local nursery with name tag batik. It has a beautiful pattern of light and dark green and some white.

Eeeek! Squeal! So excited to see this progress video. I think most of us buy the smallest of our wish list plant as that is the only way to afford our dream plants. Humidity cabinet is the way to go in the beginning. It's basically a plant nursery. Just like you wouldn't send a 7 year old off to college. Thanks so very much for all the work and time you graciously put into these progress videos. Hit that like button, people!!!

And not everything needs such a high humidity.
I got my frydek as a single tiny leaflet, no bigger than the top of my thumb, it's been a bit more than a year, and it's doing great. It has 6 leaves as of now. I started in soil, and after a while I got it in PON. It grew a lot of roots directly in the water reserve. Now it's in a bigger pot, and although I lost a lot of roots during the repot (not all who were in the reservoir managed to go through the holes.)
I don't have a cabinet, nor a greenhouse, all my plants are in my living room, where I try not to go under 40% humidity (I often have to run a humidifier because the flat is pretty dry.) I only have grow lights.
So humidity wise, my frydek always was in normal household humidity and it's doing great. It's the only alocasia I have that didn't have any set back over so much time.

Awesome! All corms are growing happily with perfect variegation!!!!!
I always start growing my plants from the size of starter plant, that means they were super tiny when they first came home.
Extra care is needed but the sense of achievement is CRAZY.

I love videos like this one! Very cool to see the entire process.
Same thing happened with my frydek. Ordered a really big one cause I was like "well, it's my dream plant, might as well" and it lost all of its leaves within a week! I was absolutely heartbroken and angry with myself as I'm always buying baby plants and with this one I kinda broke my rule 😂 she lost her entire root system as it turned out (root rot). She's recovering now and gave me already 3 new baby frydeks so maybe as you've said it's just a blessing in disguise.
Thanks for this video. Really love to see you're exploring more alocasias as they're probably my fav plant genius at the moment. Happy growing!

I got a great take away from this video - I have a few monstera mints, a frydek like yours, and a billy that I am growing from tissue culture. I just introduced them to my living environment (usually about 60% humidity)over time. They’re alive but really slow growing. I’m going to pop them in a clear box for a while since I don’t have a cabinet. Help them get a better start on life. If only love were enough- because I LOVE them!

In my experience, and based on what I’ve seen a lot of people say online, Frydeks don’t really like being in cabinets. I have mine in ambient humidity (50% average) and water when it’s almost dry. Seems to like it!

Yeah, seems like there is difference between the alocasia types. I let all of mine dry out as much as possible with a moderately chunky mix and 60% humidity otherwise they start drooping instantly. Never had the droop of a humidity change before so don't know if that is a common problem 🤔

  • @megaapfel
    @megaapfel 6 місяців тому

I find that Frydeks are a little bit strange like many Alocasias, but my guess would be that they don't like that much humidity as the mold would indicate, so maybe something like 80% would be better.
I can also confirm your findings that potentially larger growing alocasias are more hardy, because I have a Macrorrhiza that's growing like crazy. It's still an Alocasia so it drops the oldest leaf every now and then if I don't feed it a lot, but it's so much easier to please than the smaller Alocasias.

  • @kimberlydrennon4982
    @kimberlydrennon4982 6 місяців тому

So first of all every time you say Frydek I head "Fried egg" so I'm glad you put thr names on screen. Second, something I've seen from other plant channels and especially planted aquarium or terrarium channels is that while a species might be tolerant to certain conditions, the individual might not be so when you put thr Frydek in an environment it wasn't used to it melted. Planted aquarium people basically expect this out of new plants because water plants are typically grown emersed (roots under water and leaves above) but then get displayed and used submersed (whole plant under water) and the leaves arent used to that new environment and all die off. Then the plant puts out new leaves that are used to the new growth and it's all fine.

I only had more common alocasias like a green portodora, macroriza and amazonica, but from my experience, they are the fussiest tropical plants about being overwatered. Do it once and you'll see the oldest leaf get yellow or soft immediately, before even observing any root damage. The good thing is that even if there's nothing left, they almost always resprout.
Edit: Just saw that this happened indeed.

Loved this type of content! I've killed 3 frydeks myself and am on the 4th (hopefully the last) one that I grow from a baby plant, I think I know now what my mistakes were but I think alocasias in general are so fussy and I just don't have a perfect ambiance for then quite yet. Cheers on the great content

Have you ever tried using coconut husk chunks? I find my Aroids thrive in a mix of CHC, perlite and charcoal. CHC are a bit of a pain to prepare for use (to remove salts and tannins) but they are so economical (at least here in the US) and the root growth is just outstanding, I think it is worth it. (I also add some mycorrhizal fungi when I am potting them up and add it to the nutrient solution once a month)

That reminds me - my frydek needs a repot. I think this one needs a smaller pot, mine is growing in small 9cm (7cm tall) pot and it has some nice leaves. It’s been growing all winter here in Poland and the light conditions are really poor and humidity with ac on - you can guess😂 I water when the leaves start getting droopy (sorry) but it seems to like me, and the leaves… a lot of white what a beauty. You should try separating the babies and put them in different conditions to figure out what they like. Sometimes we give too much care 😊

wow.. I hope my Anthuriums can grow at the speed as yours.. I got a few variagated seedlings and they hardly grow. By the way I can get luxurians with about 20cm long leaves for 10 to 15 USD in China, Okinawa silver alocasia is dirt cheap too.. the one year old size you showed would be about 5 USD. Most plants sold here comes from extreme mass tissue culture productions 😅. I am waiting for variagated red congo philodendron price to go down.. it's very expensive at the moment.

Glorious that were both small like the ones in this video. They have certainly grown quite a bit and they want to climb. However, the root systems don’t appear to be very robust yet. Hey :) there is more in-depth guidance in my moss pole playlist but jn a nutshel: put it on a pole as soon as possible but stick to the regular principles: repot it once the root system is ready for it/has outgrown the current pot & with that repot just add a pole into the pot :)

Sadly some creatures are just born weaker. Plants included. There will always be a runt of the litter so to speak. A failure to thrive for seemingly no reason. It's sad, but it happens. You can do everything possible and still lose some in conditions others thrive in. And unfortunately most of the time we don't really have a medication you can give to fix plants.

I adore this style of video and appreciate all the effort that goes into making them. Thank you for your time, positive attitude, and advice! I've been trying tiny plants in a humidity box and I just up-potted some anthurium hybrids! They had three months in the box and are now in an open shelf with 70 - 80% humidity. 🤞

Ohh you got an Odora as well!^^ I love this plant and I love the hype it's starting to get. Although I'm having some trouble with this one. Harvested corms from my plant which is hardly even variegated... And all her plantlets seem to be completely white xD I'll never get nice variegation.

Thank you so much for another amazing video!! My experience with A. Frydek is that they stress very easily, more easily than any other alocasia I’ve kept but. With one I had, even just bringing him home from the nursery was enough of a change to stress him and he wilted and dropped all of his leaves. But they always grow back with the new growth acclimatised to their new home.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm from Perth, WA so I'll check out the plant suppliers website and see what rare plants are available. I'm also keen to see how you set up your Ikea cabinet so hopefully you'll have a video on that.

Flora Magnifica are my favourite plant shop, Dexter is always super helpful. I have lots of big plants that started out as TC plantlets from Flora Magnifica.

I have a regular non-variegated frydek / green velvet / michblahblablah. It’s a smaller one and it has been a diva as well. It has dropped all but two of its leaves…
However there was one corm with roots already growing that I potted separately, and it is growing a shoot. Hopefully this plant isn’t too much trouble lol

Another awesome video! Absolutely love the format and watching the growth process. Looking fwd to similar ones. What’s also great is that in this vid the plants of choice don’t need a moss pole! Very refreshing.

Me too!!! I love to buy tiny tc plugs and grow them up. I’ve always felt like i was cheating when i bought a plant in anything larger than a 6” (15 cm) pot anyway. That is the fun for me.

When I find a good deal Hoya I buy 2 of the same. Watching them grow you can usually see that one of them grows so much better than the other. They all are the same size, same medium, same lighting and watered and fertilized the same but growth can really vary and it’s the plant itself. Try it. It’s not you. Tfs

Love seeing a time lapse of baby plant to well established (fat roots) plant. And having one of the four fail was proof that even though it was given the same, primo conditions, happy, healthy growth is never guaranteed. TY

Your pronunciation is quite good. Anyway, most plant names have Latin roots, so they should almost always be pronounced as spelled.

4:23 yeah but batik isn’t an English word, it’s an Indian textile dying technique. So in that case we should pay a little attention to pronunciation. It’s bah-teek btw :)

Love these videos and your sense of humour. I so want to get into these kind of plants but I believe they are poisonous to dogs in particular and since I have a puppy that likes to chew on plants I may need to wait a while. I already garden but need to up my indoor plant game. I know if I start then there will be no end to it.😂 Hi to Brad, loved seeing his tail popping up in the video today.

I got a sancti and I put mine in a clear cup with perlite with a another clear cup taped on top it’s been like two months and I’m starting to see roots. It grows slowly but it’s so healthy I only open in a few times a week so it’s not too exposed 😊 I love the journey! Congrats Jan!

I've learned so much from watching your videos, I mostly like how you do the before and after plant videos. Because I'm on a budget I only by baby plants that cost $10.00 or less. I've never had one to come with pest so far and I don't grow them in a special cabinet, they seem to get use to my environment and grow. What I'm working on is growing my plants on moss poles so they can be big and beautiful like yours. Thank you for showing us the do's and don't's in plant growth!
