All the best mate, I know it has been a hard and testing journey this last few years. Keep the vids coming so we know you are still breathing.
Well I’ve only just watched half of it and I just have to leave a comment and say you’re amazing person nothing seems to bother you. That sounds like the big end is gone and the engine is completely right off but nothing seems to bother you. You got a great attitude on life I salute you.❤
Hi Tim, yes the big end is the crank shaft & when that goes especially on these older engines it’s hard to get fixed. Sounds like it’s beyond repair with the noise it was making.
Just watched your latest disaster Tim and I’m truly gutted for you. If it wasn’t for bad luck you wouldn’t have any luck! I’ve rewatched where you fill up with diesel then the section where you start the engine. I noticed that when you turned the ignition on but before you cranked it over the oil light wasn’t lit as it should be. When you crank the engine over and the engine starts the oil light is then supposed to go out because the pump is pressuring the bearings. I’m thinking the oil light bulb may have blown or been removed in which case you would never know if the oil pump is working at all. Without cranking the engine will you turn the ignition on, the oil light and the ignition light should be illuminated until the engine is cranked. If it’s not illuminated then the oil pump may have been faulty for some time which would cause bearing failure, most probably the big end crankshaft bearings. Hopefully I’m wrong with my diagnosis Tim. If the bearing are shot Tim when you dip the oil you can in severe cases actually feel the bearing white metal particles if you put some of the oil and rub your fingers together.
@ I agree Tim it’s not the main problem here but if you had the knowledge or experience to notice the oil light wasn’t illuminating then you could have asked more questions and saved the engine. No you’re right they aren’t LED’s but they were small bulbs in the binnacle which I mentioned. Hope you get sorted Tim, might be worth installing the diesel heater to make it more bearable if you’re immobilised for a while.
Your getting a lot of help from comments Tim. I am so sorry. I haven't a clue what to advise you to do, but it looks like your out of the frying pan into the fire, but you have my admiration, if that's worth anything.
Hi Tim, The first thing is, this is a reciprocating mechanical noise and not rotational. It's an oil pressure supply problem, not a lack of oil. The oil warning light is not for low oil level but for low oil pressure. The light should always come on in the ignition position (along with the charging light) and go out once started. I've looked back at a couple of your starting attempt videos and the oil light has never worked in them. At first I did thing big ends as it sounded very loud but having watched it again I'm not so sure. It started to sound tappety and I know that the camshaft oil supply has less priority than the crank journals. You also showed the camshaft looking bone dry but I've read all the comments so far and it was suggested by someone that there was a problem with oil supply to the cam. Overfilling with oil won't fix it and you said 'something like 'why didn't it work' and the reply was it's not the oil. The camshaft has to be pressure fed and if that fails it won't take long for everything to start clattering. Of course it could be the crank (difficult to tell) but at the end of the day, I'd guess, it's either old coked up oil or an oil pump failure. It can all be fixed (camshaft relatively easy) but anything else would probably be too difficult in your situation, sorry.
@stevewild4449 if the camshaft had starved, so has the rest of the engine, its not worth fixing; the bottom end is 100% gone needs a replacement engine 100%
@@HM.Hatchet205 That's not strictly true as the oil feed to the cam can become blocked in isolation. I agree that it is most likely bottom end as well and my guess would blocked or failed oil pump. It is perfectly possible to rebuild this engine and we did hundreds during my time a motor mechanic. They were stripped and all parts needing machining were sent off to the machine shop. When they came back it was simply rebuilt with any new parts required (minimum here would be camshaft & oil pump) and it was a fully reconditioned unit. If Tim went down this route it would run as good as new 👌
Its not worth the risk and wasting time stripping it, and its not the camshaft knocking, would need a full engine rebuild, while he struggles to live in it and the struggle to luve in it while wastè time and money with this knackered engine best off getting a second hand engine ordered to a local garage and once its there get it booked in and fitted with in a day can get an engine on ebay 300 to 500 delivered
Sorry to see this Tim. Its a sump off and main bearing caps and little end caps off and inspection needed. This may be possible without taking the engine out and see if its spun a bearing. If your lucky the crank journals are not scored up and you'l get away with a new set of bearing shells.
Tim congratulations you just posted one of the best 👌 van life videos ever ❤️ the way you got lovely camera 📷 shots of all what you was doing bro I'm sure reality of the events will rack up the views for your beautiful shot video 📹 thanks mate

Sounds like oil pump failure the pump pumps oil around engine if that stops u no oil lube the engine parts and that's what that horrible noise is so if oil pump gets replaced it may be okay
Tim you need to remove the cover that’s left hand side of the oil cap. Inside will be a rubber belt & metal pulleys, I’m guessing it could just be a loose pulley that’s knocking. Did the steering feel stiff as could just be power steering belt pulley. It can’t be cambelt because it still runs & I couldn’t see excessive smoke when you started it back up. It can’t be water pump either because it didn’t overheat when you were driving. If you’re unsure it might be best to look up a mobile mechanic that’s nearby & get a diagnosis & don’t drive it because you have put way too much oil in & will blow out the seals. Don’t lose hope buddy because that engine is a lot better than any modern diesel engine. I hope you get it sorted soon & try to keep warm.
@ remove the belt cover & you will see if the belt is still attached. I think it will have come off, start the engine & look for an out of line pulley. If it all looks ok & the belt looks good, then look at the tension because it may just be the belt tensioner rattling. If you’re unable to remove the cover, you can start the engine & feel the side of the cover with your hand but don’t leave it running very long because you might do more damage. I hope you can work it out buddy.
I don’t think it’s the big ends I would suspect it’s the oil pump and the reason I think this low oil pressure which will affect the hydraulic lifters and the timing chain tensioner and the reason I think this is because the loss of power on the motorway
You could drop the sump and replace the big end bearings with standard shells if you can ..... crank is prob damaged ... might return oil pressure .... more of a bush fix tbh .... best of luck buddy❤

@SocksWithSandals Ah well the Council Tax will be cheaper their and the diversity will give you lots of options most of which you will want to avoid 😁.
Most vanlife channels have fake drama. Mr Socks has authentic drama. The fact the van was still driving is a glimmer of hope. If the big end completely goes, it just seizes. It's not easy, but it is recoverable. Fingers crossed for you.🤞 You need to catch a break. Hopefully someone watching with an uneeded van can donate, if it isn't recoverable.
@@SocksWithSandals Quick way to test if the crankshaft and big ends have shredded is an oil change. If you get a socket wrench under the van and drain the oil pan into a tray, check to see if a lot of metal shards come out with the old oil. If it's looking fairly free of metal, you'll have a fighting chance, and know that it's maybe not terminal. At least you're in a big city now, so mobile roadside mechanics may be easier to find nearby - the RAC will do mobile mechanic repair calls, and you don't have to be a member, but they're not usually the cheapest.

@SocksWithSandals Not sure which engine is in it, easy one is take cam cover off and look at cam and rockers while turning the engine over with a spanner.......next would be sump off abd check.... next would be exchange engine or rebuild. Got to get ones hands in it Tim unfortunately.

Probably a silly response Tim but when you filled your diesel up. You haven’t accidentally filled it with petrol. Or petrol with diesel. Good luck fella you certainly due some
Sounds like the top end to me, bottom end noise doesn’t sound like that in my experience. The top end has been starved of oil hence the hydraulic tappets not doing their job and lack of power. Bottom end wear won’t usually equal lack of power until they disintegrate. My guess is the oil pump has failed, you might get away with changing that
aww tim , thats some very tough luck dude , gutted for you after all the effort youve put into the mansion , might be something a lot less terminal , maybe a stuck valve ? but whatever it is , need to drain some oil out, way too much will cause its own issues and get a mechanic too diagnose the issue ,if youre aiming at a fix that is, if not try to find some off highway parking you dont need to pay insurance/tax from then on could always black up , buy a dingy and head down to dover = 4star hotel n 300 a week + in no time 🤣
Almost certainly damaged bearings on Crankshaft. Most garages wont touch it due to it being a time consuming repair others will suggest a second hand engine a decent mobile mechanic might take the job on. Good luck
@@SocksWithSandals Yes but I would not drive it far may be on to a quieter road. The higher the revs the more chance of damage caused . You might get away with fitting new bearing but if its damaged the crank its an engine out repair costing more than a engine swap then.

Very kind, Richy. We'll see.
Thanks
Appreciated
I wouldnt be starting her up right now......maybe worth a call around a few mobile mechanics as they tend to be cheaper than a garage and should at least be able to let you know whats wrong......fingers crossed for you!
Top tip, Iain. 🛠
gutted for you buddy, but you will prevail. hope it can be fixed affordably. at least you haven't invested to much money into it.
Worse things happen at sea, Brian.
Is your middle name jonah ?@@SocksWithSandals
Been watching since the start, first time I've sent you a PayPal but you are stuck in Leicester 😢 however know you will pull through 👍
Thanks, Uncle J. We will prevail.
Hopefully a subscriber can come and diagnose it for you mate 🙏🏻
Hope when u put fan belt on not 2 tight hope you fix best wishes
I had no choice because I could not access the alternator tensioner. That could be what bit me in the arse.
We are really sorry to learn about your latest setback Tim. We are really hoping that all of the work that you have put into this Ducato has not been in vain. Wishing you better luck Tim.
These things are sent to try us, Steffan.
Bottom end is 100% gone you should of stopped rite away and let it cool down instead of keep driving it, needs a full replacement engine now
I pulled off at the first possible exit
Should of really done filter and oil change before using it, old oil and engine being underload after sitting so long has finished it off
🙉🙉 that doesn't sound great,, so good to see you back on the road,I'm disappointed for you,, hopefully you'll get a not too painful solution,,🙏
Cheapest option is to buy a new engine.if you can find one
I am no mechanic so unable to offer any advice Tim, I'm sure someone will be able to advise you better than i can do. hopefully its manageable repair 🤞
Ahhh Tim im so gutted for you mate, you did a great job on her though
The Mansion met yet rise like a phoenix from the ashes of despair.
@@SocksWithSandals oh shit now that would be awsome
OMG the end of the mansion, my hearth goes out for ya Tim
Is still taxed, insured, and MOT'd for another year. Might be a more luxurious repeat of the Pack it in Stan scenario.
Gutted for you Mr socks, Hope you are soon sorted mate .
Subbed and like fella hopefully a mobile mechanical can help you out local. Fingers crossed
tim it sounds like a big end bearing problem with that kind of noise the bottom end is a right off sorry to say .
Yeah could be.
@@SocksWithSandals yes it could well be a big end tim is it diesel or a petrol engine my man
Diesel@@peterdyer8789
Sorry Tim sounds like your engine is completely knackered.
Turn the radio up? Low blinker fluid? I had one do exactly this... got rid of it. Not very helpful I know, all the best!
I might have heard the problem earlier, had I not had the radio on so loud in there.
Tim if you need anything or a hand give me a shout. I’m not a million miles away.
Very kind, Steve.
I'm OK where I am for the time being, just waiting for good advice in the comments as to which problem I might be dealing with.
Hopefully we have some hope.
A diesel engine with a knocking injector could sound like that ?
Indeed.
Take the oil out over the top mark or you'll definitely mash the crank in two
Yes, I overdid it with the top-up.
So sorry about your problems. I think you’ll need to be towed back to where you were living before so at least you can live there with a vehicle not moving. We would all like to help you..❤❤❤
I'm parked legally where I am with plenty of facilities within a one mile walk. Possibly a better place to be stuck than where I was.
Are you a member of breakdown service? Hope you are going to be ok Socks with sandals?
I will prevail.
Injector seal ? It's idling
Could be.
Hope it’s an easy fix mate 🙏
It had bloody better be, Jason.
Jim couldn’t fix this I’m guessing ,.
No idea about the problem but you need to get back to where you were, financially it just makes sense.
I was unemployed where I was.
@SocksWithSandals Ah well the Council Tax will be cheaper their and the diversity will give you lots of options most of which you will want to avoid 😁.
Vanlifers don't pay council tax, Clive.
That's the point.
@SocksWithSandals just trying to put a smile on your face for a couple of seconds probably not my best idea 💡.
Most vanlife channels have fake drama.
Mr Socks has authentic drama.
The fact the van was still driving is a glimmer of hope. If the big end completely goes, it just seizes. It's not easy, but it is recoverable. Fingers crossed for you.🤞
You need to catch a break. Hopefully someone watching with an uneeded van can donate, if it isn't recoverable.
Yeah it's not looking good for me at the moment.
🖤🤎🖤🤎🖤🤎🖤🤎🖤🤎🖤
Ffs what is up with your luck , life just keeps kicking you down .
@hgvdipper8598 ×ere it not for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all.
There’s one on fb marketplace in Worcestershire for £600 runs and drives, needs work,.
I doubt mine requires more than £600 of work, Mike.
@@SocksWithSandals Just be aware that your a cowboy in a town full of indians ,.
Big end bearings? Any smoke?
No smoke.
Hi Tim, I hope all goes well. i live in Narborough. Do you need anything, and if I can help, i will wish I was good with engine's mate. Sorry, I am not.
That is really close.
By all means pop by this miserable evening if you wish, but from 11:30am Monday it may be gone.
Now there’s an idea, gone… up in smoke ?@@SocksWithSandals
Drop the oil out of it look for metal in oil a magnet will help if they are small fillings
Top tip, Simon.
Have a chat with Piggy power on the youtube. Hes near Burford. Knows everything about these XUD engines. Plus the XUD went in many many things so should be enough cheap stock to swap it over. Im quite amazed one has actually got tired
Thanks. I did not even know the engine was called XUD.
A up Tim stroke Craig 😊Erm just have a shop round at scrapyards see if they’ve got a engine for your van it’s not the end yet for the Mantion
That's going to be another money pet having an engine delivered and then using a hoist and removing and scrapping the old one. Not to mention the hassle of doing it of the side of a road on Iranian Industrial Estate in Leicester during the winter.
@ I will come and help you I’ve got a van can pick new engine up and get rid of old one Tim and I’m sure we can man handle the engineines one in one out
Houston we have a problem 🤔
At least I'm not freezing over the far side of the Moon with limited oxygen.
That sounds fooked
Well, you're not wrong.
Love the B redg escort.with clover 🍀 leafs.
A great survivor. I'm sure it is has had many ups and downs like my van has too!
Classic oik pump.failure gutted for ya
So many potential plausible theories.
@SocksWithSandals that metalic sound is fairly conclusive ,
I don’t take criticism well tho,.
Good
I had bmw 318 i that did same thing i drove it until i could hear shell bearings breaking out and finally piston came out true the engine then it was engine gone 😅 🙃
Yeah, sounds like it, Tom.
Not oil it's a tappet or a valve m8
This is terrible news - how will you get to work never mind get it fixed. The very best of luck with it.
Workers finished which is why I was on an adventure.
Fighting torque you tube may help if recovery is needed , failing that watch "camperado i 3 nomadi and see how motorhoming is done properly ,.
I don't follow UA-cam recommendations, Mike.
Anything catching pulleys Crank etc
Interesting...🤔
Tim that sounds awful fella sounds like an small or big end bearing. Hope not have you checked the oil engine noise is difficult to pick up on video 👍☹️
The oil part of the video is the second half, Christopher.
Sump off and check the shells, personally a secondhand motor would be the fastest option to get you back on the road matey.
Shame.
Yeah, I don't know what to do know.
@SocksWithSandals Not sure which engine is in it, easy one is take cam cover off and look at cam and rockers while turning the engine over with a spanner.......next would be sump off abd check.... next would be exchange engine or rebuild.
Got to get ones hands in it Tim unfortunately.
Way it died on motorway sounds like big end bearing in engine.everything seem to be going smoothly until that started out of middle of nowhere thats a strange one 🤔 tim
Yes, that was my first thought because I had a Vauxhall Viva engine die the same way.
@@SocksWithSandals don't want be given bad news but I would goggle that model engine see if any other owners had same knock engine sound perhaps u did right ✅️ thing top up oil
Nooo bloody hell 😢
I feel tpur pain! That dont sound good at all.
Not ideal, Ian.
Probably a silly response Tim but when you filled your diesel up. You haven’t accidentally filled it with petrol. Or petrol with diesel. Good luck fella you certainly due some
The black handle and the price of the pump per litre prove that I did insert diesel.
Replace the engine it will be cheaper. Sorry to see that
It may come to that, Darran.
Main bearings are gone... replace engine...
Yes this seems to be the most common diagnosis.
Sounds like the top end to me, bottom end noise doesn’t sound like that in my experience. The top end has been starved of oil hence the hydraulic tappets not doing their job and lack of power. Bottom end wear won’t usually equal lack of power until they disintegrate. My guess is the oil pump has failed, you might get away with changing that
Other people have suggested the oil pump, too, Rob.
Not 35. 36 years, you forgot your motorhome from 1988?
Good point, well made.
@@SocksWithSandals Because I very attendive.
aww tim , thats some very tough luck dude , gutted for you after all the effort youve put into the mansion , might be something a lot less terminal , maybe a stuck valve ? but whatever it is , need to drain some oil out, way too much will cause its own issues and get a mechanic too diagnose the issue ,if youre aiming at a fix that is, if not try to find some off highway parking you dont need to pay insurance/tax from then on
could always black up , buy a dingy and head down to dover = 4star hotel n 300 a week + in no time 🤣
Big ends
Maybe, Paul.
Very sorry for you,, let us all know if you set up a go fund me or can send a donation..
I do have a PayPal:

I don't like asking.
Feel so sad for you Tim, hope you get sorted
Cheers, Dave
Almost certainly damaged bearings on Crankshaft. Most garages wont touch it due to it being a time consuming repair others will suggest a second hand engine a decent mobile mechanic might take the job on. Good luck
Interesting. That means I could move it a little bit at low speed.
@@SocksWithSandals Yes but I would not drive it far may be on to a quieter road. The higher the revs the more chance of damage caused . You might get away with fitting new bearing but if its damaged the crank its an engine out repair costing more than a engine swap then.
I wouldn’t chance driving it as it’s likely to throw a leg out of bed, (conrod through the side of the engine)@@SocksWithSandals
It definitely sounds like the crank is bouncing around inside the engine I think the crank bearings need to be replaced. Tim was the mansion making that noise before you put diesel in the mansion if it wasn't then you might have gotten dirty diesel that blocked your injectors I really hope you kept your receipt from where you got your diesel because they would be responsible for your engine getting damaged and legally they would have to pay for the repairs.
As you say but for bad luck you'd have no luck at all. Gutted for you!
There is an engine for sale on eBay now £850 + £85 for pallet delivery. I've tried to share a link but I don't think You-tube allow links to ebaye.
I'll check my spam filter for that link.
Books not free - supposed to make contribution
Blimey JUST seen the vid we had talbot express tippers years ago on garden maintenance maintenance problem was always gear linkages, engines always good I'm pretty sure they were Peugeot engines, seems diesel related in my opinion.
IT'S THE PEUGEOT J5 ENGINE
Yes, I have far too much throw on my gear stick at the moment when changing, but that's not the cause of the engine noise while in neutral.
