E Aural Trainer - Identifying chords at cadence points for Grade 8 Aural
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 гру 2024
- This section of the aural tests comes right after identifying the cadence, for which I have published a separate video. If you feel you need more practice at this, click here • E Aural Trainer - Iden...
From here, you will need to use a bit of theory knowledge along with your ear. The first thing you need to do is hear the bass line and work out which degrees of the scale are used. Then you will need to match the bass note with possible chord combinations. Study this chart for a moment
Bass note Possible chords
Tonic I,
Supertonic II, Vc
Mediant Ib
Subdominant IIb, IV
Dominant Ic, V, V7
Submediant VI
Leading note Vb
Using this information you can easily identify chords on a given bass note. For example if the bass note of a cadence in a major key was the subdominant of that key and the chord was minor - you know it will be chord IIb.

Want a DISTINCTION in YOUR next ABRSM Exam? www.music-online.org.uk/2019/01/how-to-get-distinction-in-abrsm-exams.html
My exam's in less than a month and this has helped so much. Wish me luck, guys!
Good luck and I'm glad myvideo helped you. Let me know how you get on
Hi there, I just wanted to let you know that I got a distinction in my grade 8 piano! I used loads of your videos and got 18/18 in the aural all due to you! Thank you so much.
Congratulations.!!!
My exam was in half an hr when I started binging ur vids thank you so much u really made a difference to my result
Very helpful video; even as a piano teacher it’s sometimes difficult to make it simple enough. But I am amazed how many students on here obviously are not getting any practice with this in their lessons!!
Thanks for your comment. I agree these areas of the exam are often tacked on to preparation as a last minute afterthought. Feel free to recommend to your students "throughout" their exam prep. ;)
i have a grade 8 exam in two weeks and this helped so much!!
Good luck!!!
I will have my grade 8 piano exam two days after. Thanks for your videos. They are really helpful. The technique of taking this test and the modulation test is to compare the bass line of the chord to the tonic but I found it hard to identify the bass line. The skill I have developed for these tests is to feel the sense of the chord like perfect cadence sounds like finished and modulation to dominant sounds lifting etc. I could give correct answers to these tests sometime when I was practicing with my teacher. I have failed my aural test in my grade 5 and 7 exams (but luckily overall pass) so I wish I can pass this component in grade 8.
I'm glad you found them useful, good luck with your exam and let me know how it goes.
@@MusicOnlineUK I just finished my exam. I feel so bad. I played wrong notes in scales and three pieces. I am worried about the results.
In my experience we all focus on the negative and forget the positive after an exam, try not to overthink it. You might find this video helpful ua-cam.com/video/AfqlOuX5Myo/v-deo.html
@@MusicOnlineUK I've just received the result yesterday. I got 109 and so passed the exam! I still failed the aural part because I always remembered the bad performance in playing the scale and pieces during the aural section so I couldn't pay attention to hear the melodies that the examiner played. The examiner commented that my answers were partly accurate. Anyway, many thanks to your encouragement and to your videos and wish you can keep producing more such valuable and educational videos to other candidates.
@@lesleywong5152 Well done on your pass. I totally understand that it's easy to get distracted when something didn't go well in a previous section. Don't be too hard on yourself. What are your future plans?
Thank you very much for this video! I struggle so much with chords and this video really helped!😃
You're most welcome.
Hello, thank you so much for your amazing video, this was so helpful, everything was explained clearly. But I've got something being confused with, I don't really understand the difference between II, Vc / IIb, IV and Ic, V, V7. I seriously got no idea what are those, could you please explain to me precisely if anyone sees this? My exam's in less than three days and I literally got no confidence in either scales and pieces, so I must do my best in aural hopefully. Thank you so much, please save me if you can see this.
The examples you ask about have different tonalities, so for example in a major key; II is minor/Vc is major; IIb is minor/IV is major. For your last example, Ic is almost always used just before V (or V7) in the aural test examples, so if you hear the dominant bass note two in a row it's probably going to be Ic-V. V7 is just a richer sounding version of V. Check out more practice examples on my Spotify open.spotify.com/artist/7gmGXk9l4QjGGKGz8a0X1K
Pls help. I forgot all about theory and I’m very stuck on this part of the aural test. What can I do?
There are more resources on my website www.music-online.org.uk/p/aural-trainer.html
Sorry,
I understand that there are many different videos you need to watch to fully understand this but i recommend extending the length of the video and explain the basic necessities of knowledge you need for this video.
other than that I love your videos and I have recently bought a book called 'how to get a destinction in ABRSM'
these videos help a lot
my grade 8 exam is in 3 months and i really hope i can suck in all of this knowledge,
i would highly appreciate if you took into consideration my request
THANKS
;)
Thanks for your comment. To get the best out of these videos, it's better to think of E Aural Trainer as a course, using the whole playlist to develop your aural skills. Therefore, someone doing grade 8 would benefit from doing earlier grade videos as the knowledge is accumulative and watching these videos, assumes you have watched the previous ones in the playlist.
so helpful! lol the way you roll your r's reminds me of grizzly tales gruesome kids on citv
Do you have an exam soon?
omg I am so nervous cause I have my exam three days after and I still can'y get the correct answer all the time
wanna to ask how to identify the notes clearly and accurately
i can hear the dominant 7th if it's pointed out to me, but i can never pick it out on my own =(
Keep practicing. It will come.
@@RobertKay hoo boy, only 7 days until my exam though... hope i can practise
enough
Listen for the richer tone of the dominant 7th.
Having exam in a month's time, this is so helpful!! Many thanks for sharing ❤️😊

my exam is in november grade 8 and my weakest part are the chords. i
and i still dont really understand the chart
I can offeryou some Skype training if you wish www.music-online.org.uk/p/skype-lessons.html
@@MusicOnlineUK i don't know yet but thanks
I love this channel very much😍It helps me a lot in the grade 8 exam next next week
Thank you so much and good luck with your exam. Do let me know how it goes
Excuse me sir, I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I’m struggling immensely with listening to the baseline, I unintentionally listen to the chords as a whole so am wildly off most of the time, what can I do?
Practice hearing baselines everywhere you go, even shops, elevators etc
@@MusicOnlineUK thank you for the advice. I will start doing this.
Hello your videos have been so helpful and I really appreciate all your effort! But I’m kind of struggling right here with identify the chords at cadence! I get the base notes but how is it so do fa base line ll V l for the example at 2:03? I’m so sorry but I just somehow don’t get that part! Thank you !
If I understand you correctly, you refer to solfeggio names so do fa, but I'm not sure which chords you are referring to, so, do, fa would be bass notes V, I, IV?? In the example at 2:03, the bass notes are II, V, I
MusicOnline UK hello thank you for replying! I don’t get the part how you got II-V7-I or even just II V I !!!
@@jwang795 The first step is to hear the bass line and then work out the notes from there. If you want more help I can give you some one to one assistance on Skype www.music-online.org.uk/p/skype-lessons.html
Hi - thanks very much - the chart is helpful. Can I check if chord v in a minor key should read minor & not major please. Thanks Maureen
Because a minor key often has a raised 7th the dominant triad of a minor key is usually major sounding
You're a lifesaver!
Glad to help, good luck with your exam
5:33 the chord here sounds extremely minor yet it says its chord 4?
My grade 8 is tomorrow and I definitely needed this 😂
Good luck - let me know how you get on.
elin bolland it went really well and I got distinction in the end 😊
@@freyasage8981 how did u learn this overnight??
how to identify the first bass note, how do you know its tonic or subdominant or whatsoever,
The examiner will first play the tonic so you compare the pitch of your bass notes to this.
MusicOnline UK owhh how do i know wheter its in root 1st inversion or 2nd inversion
@@marymnicolee Then you need to compare the bass note you hear with the theory knowledge you should have from Grade 5 Theory about chords used at cadence points. If you need a refresher on this knowledge check out this post www.music-online.org.uk/p/blog-page_22.html
Hi. I still don't understand about a question. That is in 8:08 you said that first chord is V, then later why it became IC? Is it still correct if I said it V instead of IC? (Because I am having exam This friday)
At 8:08 it was the fifth degree of the scale as the bass note, which is not the same as chord V. Chord Ic has the 5th degree of the scale as its bass note. Hope that helps. Good luck with your exam on Friday and please let me know how it goes.
No it is a different chord, it has the same bass note only. You need to distinguish between the two. chord V sounds unfinished, chord I will sound finished
Ok😊 😀Thank you very much for replying. I got it
How do you know the notes are 6th 4th 5th though? At 5:08
The test will start with a tonic triad, so you can work out the intervals from there.
MusicOnline UK Thank you but I’m still not sure how you do that?
Maybe it would help you practising recognising intervals, I have separate in the E Aural Trainer playlist specifically on this. From there you should be able to work out which degree of the scale the bass note is by working out the interval between it and the tonic.
MusicOnline UK which playlist is this??
Do we have to identify if at root, first inversion or second inversion ? In the specimen aural book it says 1c or 5a and even b after chord numbers ?
Yes you do. The chords will be limited to the tonic (root position, first or second inversions), supertonic (root position or first inversion), subdominant (root position), dominant (root position, first or second inversions), dominant seventh (root position) or submediant (root position). You can answer with full names like "tonic second inversion" or just numbers and letters like "Ic"
@@MusicOnlineUK thank you for the clarification so my next question is how can you hear them and identify them with one playing through by the examiner ? I have been struggling with this ... Do you have an tips please ?
You will effectively hear them played 3 times not just once. The first time the examiner play the whole phrase. The second time he will play the last three chords in succession without a gap. The third time he will play each chord individually for you to name them.
What’s the difference between Ic and V? Cuz I can’t identify these two chords
Ic and V very often come as a pair, and they can be easily identified by two successive chords having the same base note. So for the purposes of these are aural tests if you hear two dominant basenotes one after the other you can almost guarantee it's going to be a Ic-V progression.
MusicOnline UK thanks for ur reply sir. This video truly helps me a lot
@@yietingho1586 You're welcome and good luck with your exam.
How do you tell the difference between 1c and V???
Listen for the tonic note in Ic.
this helped me so much thank you so much. my test is tomorrow and ive been struggling so much with identifying cadences and now i understand it so well thank you so much
Good luck with your exam today - let me know how it goes.
I found the first part very helpful... just I got a bit worried in the second half. My exam is next week
I hope my videos will help you to feel more confident in your exam. Do let me know how you get on.
I’m actually screwed why can’t I do any of these??
As a warm up try the cadence videos from Grades 6 and 7 Identifying Cadences: ua-cam.com/play/PLRhVgcglVQ9lHUvdht7mrPTEUi1_1pUeL.html
wow even my music teacher cannot explain it as well as you !!! Keep up your good work.
I'm very glad you found it helpful. Thanks for leaving a comment.
may I have more practices from you? Money is not the problem
Here you go www.music-online.org.uk/p/aural-trainer.html
I still can't find some cords like the difference between Ic and V.........
Ic usually comes just before V, so if you hear the same bass note twice in consecutive chords - it's a high prbability they will be Ic-V, also can you hear the tonic note in Ic?
Ah...... I can hear it now. Thanks. Your videos really help me a lot!!!
+Anson on Wot You're welcome.
MusicOnline UK thank you! I just receive my result and I passed Grade 8. Thanks to your videos as they really help me a lot in the aural part!
Congratulations!!! Feel free to Big Yourself Up and share your result on our subscribers FORUM www.music-online.org.uk/p/forum.html
Thank you for this helpful lesson !! I can learn step by step on recognizing the degree of the scale
I appreciate your taking the time to comment.
i thought you have to identify the position too? Shouldn't example 1 be IIa-v7-Ia?
II without the "a" implies root position. So for example Ic-V-I is understood to mean Ic-Va-Ia
MusicOnline UK Ok! But I will just say a in the exam anyway and also if I say Va instead of V7 will it be considered incorrect?
@@_awkubl05 V7 is a DIFFERENT chord so yes it would be incorrect. But to say V instead of Va is ok.
MusicOnline UK 😊
I’ve got my grade 8 violin exam in 3 weeks but I still don’t get the chords!
If you are finding this hard, may I suggest trying some of the earlier videos in the "E Aural Trainer" playlist as they are introduced more gradually in earlier grades.
MusicOnline UK ok thank you!
MusicOnline UK also, I’m just wondering, how do you know that a perfect cadence is 5-1??
@@thecardtrickteacher5222 That's just a theory rule which never changes. You probably learned it in Grade 5 Theory. BTW - there are more practice examples here www.music-online.org.uk/p/aural-trainer.html
I cant hear difference between chord V and chord V7. how can u hear the difference between the 2?
Chord V7 has a richer sound, plain chord V is more "bare/strident". Listen a few times and see if you can feel this difference.
@@MusicOnlineUK thanks
May I ask, have you ever been to any music schools ( Royal Academy/ College of Music , Guildhall etc.) and if so i'd like to know how you have taken the entrance exams there, and what it was like there
I studied at the Royal Academy of Music there. The entrance "audition" at the time was of a grade 8 piece on two instruments. Great atmosphere to learn in, world class performers as tutors and talented students all around you to motivate, plus an orchestra that would match the top professional London orchestras.
@@MusicOnlineUK Glad to hear that, MusicOnline UK!
I play just the piano. I've taken those entrance exams but I have not been accepted into any of them. could you please give me some helpful tips for me so that I can succeed in Guildhall entrance exam and that I can get accepted into Guildhall?
Try and be as individual and creative as a performer, forget about the notes and give a performance that will make them sit up and listen.
I watched your video a couple of times, but I don't get how this chart works. My exam is this month on the 26th. Please help!!
You need to apply a bit of theory knowledge to whatever bass note you can hear. I can offer some one to one skype help if you need it www.music-online.org.uk/p/skype-lessons.html
@elin bolland Haha, this comment was 9 months ago! I took my grade 8, first time didn't pass and second time got merit. 😅🙌 Passing was my goal, just wanted to go back playing pieces I enjoy!
@elin bolland Its okay, thanks though. Are you prepping for grade 8 now?
Thank you 🥺❤️
Do the examiners tell you which key the chord will be in at the start of this part?
The Key and Key chord are only named for candidates who choose to play rather than sing the first part of the test.
You’ve only done major practise ones- are these much more likely to come up than minor?
Not necessarily, there are more minor examples on the link "more practice tests" at the end of the video
I don’t seem to understand how this chart helps
Once you have identified the bass note, you match it with any of the possible chords in the chart, thus narrowing down the possibi;ities which chord it might be.
Thanks so much, helped me a lot with studying for the exam! :)
Thanks for taking the time to comment. By the way, what instrument are you studying?
Piano
I'm not sure if you aware, but I have a new "Piano Specific Channel" ua-cam.com/channels/H_3J17VpbOnXYiie5MfNrg.html from which I will be doing all future piano videos. There is a Grade 8 Piano Playlist there too
OK thanks

So glad you found it useful.
OMG THIS VIDEO IS #EXCELLENTO
+Golden Hat Thank you for your comment. When is your exam?
What makes you think Golden Hat has an upcoming exam?
Will they tell you what the key chord is or will they just play it?
The examiner will name and play the key-chord, then play the three chords in sequence, finally playing each chord individually, pausing for the candidate to identify it.
Can you say 164 instead of 1c?
The official syllabus states ". The candidate may answer using technical names (tonic, first inversion, etc.), chord numbers (Ib, etc.) or letter names (C major in first inversion, etc.)."
4:10
Help! I don't understand most of this and I have an upcoming exam!
