- The tears just wouldn't stop... This moment definitely topped the 5.0 finale. But now I'm convinced it CAN'T get better than this. I don't know what Endwalker holds but it surely can't be better than 5.3... r-right?
Elidibus dragged us through the emotional wringer in this one. Forcing us to relive every big moment we've experienced so far. Papalymo, Moenbryda, Haurchefant, Ysayle, Tsuyu.. So much emotional pain in so little time. It all led into such a beautiful finale in the Seat of Sacrifice. For those we have lost, for those we can yet save.

@@terabellum I honestly think it's we sorta understood where he was coming from right to the end. He just wanted to go home! And out of the three unsundered he was the only one who could even remember what home was! Lahabrea had gone insane and Elidibus refused to use his memory stone to refresh his memories. Emet-selch was truly and utterly alone. he just...was going about it really REALLY badly.
But it made his end all the more heartbreaking and his return to save us all the more potent.
@@terabellum For better context, remember how Hythlodaeus had mentioned that Azem was not allowed to have a memory crystal made for them due to having left the group due to disagreeing with their chosen course of action? Hythlodaeus remarked that it was a dear friend of Azem's who broke with tradition and made a memory crystal for Azem in secret. Well, that's where the identity of that friend is important. SPOILERS:
Azem's best friend who made that memory crystal in secret for them, in clear breach of protocol and tradition was none other than Emet-Selch himself. Azem was his dearest and closest friend. And with that in mind, it makes it easier to understand Emet's shock and disbelief when he gets a glimpse of our past Unsundered form as Azem. He's in disbelief that out of all people, it's his dearest friend in the world who is standing against him, and so for the first time in his life he lies....to himself. He lies to himself that his eyes are playing tricks on him, and that we couldn't possibly be Azem, when deep down, he knows we truly are Azem. And when we finally defeat him, he is content both in the knowledge that he can leave things in our hands from now on, and be comforted at having had a reunion with his old friend, even if only in a Sundered form.
Emet being the one to ultimately create Azem's memory crystal also helps to explain why Emet was the one to actually appear rather than Azem....he was the one to create the crystal, and so he had become a core part of that memory crystal.
Isn’t it curious that wishing on the Crystal summoned Emet-Selch from the aetherial sea momentarily? Then he pulled us back from the rift? 😃 Curious indeed, heheheh.

5.3 came out shortly after my friend passed away, and the "rains have ceased" line spiraled me.

There will never be another "patch day experience" like the 5.3 patch day experience, I feel
Having to wait those extra months due to covid, waiting and waiting and waiting, then finding out at *FANFEST* a few months later with the reveal of Endwalker that Soken wrote the song for the trial, To The Edge, while in the hospital fighting cancer, potentially being the last song he would ever write in his life, and all these emotions welling up and pouring out with the end of Shadowbringers for the characters involved and the players, far and above considered the best this game has ever had in terms of story, even after Endwalker to some
5.3 was fucking awesome! I'll never forget the hype of seeing the crashed puppet's bunker in kholusia, people doing flamedance from the moonfire fair, the meteors coming down and the barrier across the gates of the crystal tower after a certain point in msq, and of course being able to fly in ARR zones. I got up at like 5am to play, immaculate patch day experience.
It hits hard when you realize that Elidibus is around your height...and the phantom Ancients called you all children.
Elidibus must have been relatively young when he willingly gave himself up to be Zodiark's heart. And then spent millenia trying to perform a duty for people he had slowly forgotten about. His voice actor does a great job slowly transitioning from indignation to confusion in that one line
I was actually thinking about this while editing the video. I don't think I really acknowledged how smol he was in the moment, and it made me start wondering some things retroactively. I'm really hoping I learn more of Elidibus' story as I continue playing.
One of the official short stories square enix released mentions that the Convocation members see Elidibus as their little brother and when he volunteered to be Zodiark's heart, quote; "There was none among us who did not waver."
I’ve heard the Japanese version of the script uses a specific descriptor of young Japanese men reserved for those colloquially in the range of 16-24 and I think medically 18-30? The numbers aren’t exact from memory but are close.

Jp uses 小柄な青年 basically "a young man of short stature". NOTE that 青年 is specifically "seinen", which is mostly used for young adults, or for the manga category demographics, which is again around 20s or mid 20s.
@@Tobeh I view him as the Alphinaud of the Convocation. Eager to help everyone, respects them all a lot (Emet and Azem in particular seem to have been his role models), but overworks himself because he wants to prove he is as helpful as them. Relative to the rest of the Convocation, he was basically just a teenager
So young adult then? In any case, it is such a wild ride having him as our big antagonist. They gave him such a good development in such a short time for a couple of patches.
Fun fact regarding Y'shtola and Runar:
if you and another player with the mammeteer title (for owning 10 wind-up minions) each have a wind-up Runar and Wind-up Y'shtola/Matoya out at the same time they'll recreate the scene at 52:25 . With the difference that she'll accept the flower
Another cool thing about that is the flower itself. It’s the same kind of flower that she’s seen holding in the A New Beginning trailer from ARR.
So, I realize that someone likely mentioned this somewhere in chat or the like, but just in case they didn't, I would like to call attention to the song for Warrior of Light's fight - To The Edge. When 5.3 was being worked on, Soken was fighting cancer, to the point that he was hospitalized for a while. However, even while in the hospital he kept composing. He wrote To The Edge while thinking there might be a very real possibility that it would be the final contribution to the game he would make, as at the time, the prognosis for his fight with cancer was in a very tenuous place. Thankfully, Soken recovered and beat cancer's ass, but the context of To The Edge working both as a boss theme and a possible farewell from Soken hits me so very hard to this day. Still very glad that he's still rocking like the absolute legend he is.
My guild leader told me this too when I started seat of sacrifice it's amazing how strong a man can be and still do something amazing like this that's why I love this game and the producers
Oh man, this patch was ROUGH on the heart. In particular, the scene that always has me sobbing is Lyna's goodbye. The knowledge that this person who is like family to her came from another world and gave up everything for over 100 years to help them is going to finally go home, and that you're so incredibly sad to see them go, but also so happy that they can live their life as their true selves and be happy. Man. Literal bawling every time.
It kills me that her last moment with him was her putting on a brave face and smiling. She knew what was coming but chose to see him off happy rather than crying. 😢
I'm still sad they didn't voice the lyna/G'raha scene on the way to see elidibus.
Lyna's VA's performance was stellar and I needed more

Lyna's VA delivers a line after a battle in 5.0 that hurt so bad. She did so, so good. I would have loved to hear her deliver again in that moment.
I mean this, with ZERO hyperbole: I would pay for an entire expansion just to bring Lyna and G'raha's VAs into the booth to record that scene and to animate Thancred finally hugging Ryne as he says he is proud of her. Those scenes are already so powerful, adding that cherry on top would bring those scenes from a 10/10 to a 12/10, or possibly even higher.
"Joke's on you Elidibus. I know for a fact Y'shtola and Thancred would yell at me if I hesitated to attack if the enemy tried to use them against me."

Correct! From a very young age, the Exarch took care of her, and it made all their interactions just so beautiful.
I think I have seen the scenes after WoL fight + Seto scene, about 20 times now by watching streamers (and ofc playing the msq myself) and still, STILL it makes me cry every time.

Because Ishikawa is a goddess, Who else can take you from the elation of finally defeating the main villain to shredding tears for him with 7 lines of dialogue. 😂😂
The only thing I'm absolutely furious about in this entire patch is the fact that the final exarch and lyna conversation is not voiced.
The first time I watched someone's play through I was shocked because in my memory I swore it was voiced, but I guess it was just in my head. Lyna has such a distinct voice, both in written and spoken form, that I'm able to hear her voice perfectly in my head based, which isn't something I've experienced before.
5.3 just hurts different... Even after everything, it still stands as my favorite patch.
The implication with the runar scene is that she actually is interested, unlike with magnai, it's just y'shtola is very teasing and coy about it. The difference between runar and magnai is that runar knows HER as a person and is 100% genuine and shares her interests, while magnai is just "you pretty, I love you" Runar may be boyish at times but he is significantly more mature than little sun, also from his goodbye he was fully expecting to be rejected and would accept it, but does it anyway to have his feelings out there. Also that flower is the same she had in the ARR cinematic, her favorite flower, so yeah, much sturdier foundation for a potential relationship down the line
I just watched this VoD on twitch, but I'm still excited to rewatch and live this again because my inner emotional vampire needs more tears (and I'm a huge masochist)
5.3 never gets any easier. It gets harder ever time. I've seen it up to 10 times and witnessed it several times with friends, it never gets easier.

One thing I was so salty they left out at 18:25. In the original Japanese she calls him Grandpa.
34:25, he takes a deep breath and relaxes, thinking it's over. Nope. So many more huge gut punches left. And his absolute rage at seeing "the body." Perfect! And that "disinterested" remark, made me choke up laughing.

In all seriousness, my favorite thing to see people react to is the realization of who the figure is, during the WoL mid-fight scene. It took me a death and a re-attempt on the first day to realize that it wasn't just ANY figure, and when I did, I feel like my reaction was the same as yours. I was just beside myself and it was so hard to continue the fight with any decency after that. I was just SO glad to see Emet again, in any form. I think you were too.

But I fully agree. Emet MADE Shadowbringers what it was, and while I still love this expansion, there is a definite Emet-sized hole in my chest. 💔
@@terabellum Itadakimasu indeed, haha. But yes, totally agreed on Emet. Honestly, he's become one of my favorite characters of all time... I can't really even call him villain, usually I go with antagonist, because while what he did was absolutely horrible, I can also very much understand why he did it and sympathize with him. It's just that your goals and his were in conflict, in the end, so one of you had to go. But.. that he built that fail-safe into the Azem stone... does it say he had faith in you/Azem? Does it mean he knew what things might come to for Elidibus, if the worst were to happen to him, and wanted to offer his help in ending his friend's solitary struggle? For all the fronts that Emet put on, he really was pretty selfless, in some ways, in the end. Just a little tsundere about it lol.
Anyway, I'm excited to see what you think of the rest of the story, as you work through it 🙂Forge ahead, Warrior of Light.

Thanks you for the upload. Was anticipating this, and the reactions did not dissappoint. At the time, the Seto scene was the one that got me good. For about a year now, I own a pet, so that scene hits even harder now.
I sincerely like to believe that Y'shtola took up infusing Thancred's ammunication with no comment nor any prior discussion - just as a gesture of peace between them. Of family. And that it hadn't even occurred to him until this moment he'd have this problem in the Source only to learn she'd already solved it.

Boy o boy o boy... For me what happened in Endwalker hits harder. Realizing what Venat have to go through till she meet us. The WoL. It hurts so much. And everytime i play Flow. I just got that chill and the tears will flow

I want to see your reaction to the reveal of Elidibus' true nature ad a primal, but that's not in this video and the vod is not on UA-cam T_T
I have a theory that G'raha is the real Elidibus. Y'shtola pointed out that Elidibus was actually a primal, not the real Elidibus, when they were talking down in the ruins of the real Amaurot. Elidibus' answer was basically "Yeah, so?" Elidibus and G'raha have a lot of similarities, right down to the language they use. I've always wondered about that scene where we first fight Ran'jit and Emet-Selch is watching from atop the tower. He makes a comment about "such a soul" and we assume it's about the WoL, but what if he means G'raha right then? It's G'raha and Ran'jit that are fighting right under him.
What wrecked me, is learning that during all of this, Soken was undergoing treatment for cancer and managed to keep it a secret from almost everyone on the game team.
Oh nooo. G'Raha became a lvl 80 mining node. DX

By the way, if you remember the two men in Eulmore during the meteor shower before Hero's Gauntlet. Pay close attention how the man who was crying cause this will be important later.
It's normal to cry after feeling Elidibus' despair and the disappearance of Exarch/Graha... And all in the space of a few moments...

What I love about this part...is something our society has forgotten. Emet created the shard for Azem even though he didn't agree with them. You can disagree with someone on a position and still care deeply for someone. Because you may not agree with their view but you deeply care for the person and their beliefs.

5.3 end cutscene is my second favorite cutscene.
For those who use gshade, never watch that cutscene with the crystallization with mxao or the other shadow options on. It’s very clear they used a special model for his face >.>

I always say one thing in regards to this patch. If something had gone horribly wrong and the game ended here, with patch 5.3, it still would have been a perfect ending. Yes even with the tease of what’s to come. Not to discount what IS to come I should clarify. This still would have made a more than satisfactory ending.
Thankfully it didn’t just stop there and we got the ending we did in EW. Enjoy the ride. You’re not done just yet.

It always kinda amuses me seeing streamers react with tears when the Exarch turns fully to crystal because my reaction to that scene was "Um....okay, but, like....I have his soul in my pocket to return him to the Source. That was the plan, guys. I'mma take him back to his past-self-body." 😅
It was Lyna's farewell, knowing she'll likely never see him again, that hit me in the heart.
TO BE HONEST, I still thought the entire soul-pokeball plan was crap and that someone was going to get lost in the space betwixt the worlds. So I had no guarantee we were going to get out catboy back at that time.
Also, he technically did die even if we got his memories back later. That physical G'raha we knew and loved is 100% a ded popsicle still standing in the first.
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY. I'm an emotional mess. :D

The defector... That word sound like they are the worst. I'd say that the defector had something else to do, probably something more important than the final days or maybe didn't see reason to pick a side and just let everything go to ashes? No, really, I don't know the defector's reasons.

Because this is what we were hearing the very first time we watched the world end. It's a throwback to 1.0. It hit extra hard for those of us that were there.
