Back in the day, I pitted next to them at Baylands (Fremont Drag strip.) in Calif in '67 (I was in Gas Classes) .. And just down the row a few cars was Gene Snow. Heady days. Best piece of advise I ever got was from Buddy. They let me look all over their car. When I asked him about headers and why the collectors were so long, he just smiled and said Torque ... His were over 30" long. As the day wore on, I was out and they were waiting their next round, I couldn't get that out of my mind, so asked Buddy again? He said " 28~30" under 413 CI and 30~33" over 413". No more discussion. But watching the runs, I could see them pull everybody on the top end. So they knew how to make usable power 😁
It’s really really sad that they leave out the part about Herb McCandless and how he had such success driving for them. He was actually known as Mr. Four-Speed.
Watching Sox load the car up into the box truck they had, caused me to have endless respect fo Jake King. A beyond the limits race Hemi powered,71 Cuda just driving right up those steep ramps effortlessly, like it was a farm tractor. The guy was sharp, real sharp!
I remember watching Ronnie Sox match racing when I was in high school. I tried to get to any race in my area that I could if Sox was to be there. I've never seen anyone before or since that shifted faster than the tricked automatics did but somehow Ronnie did it. I put a couple of transmissions into the scrap pile trying to jam gears like Ronnie did. Expensive hero-worship! LOL!
July 1989. Ronnie watched me run my fresh 65 coronet. At Great Lakes Dragway. What a gentelman he was. He. Told me how to change me launch. . I listen and took 1.5 seconds off my time.
Just think what it would be like? To be KING OF THE 4 SPPED As Ronnie was. , Rumor has it they invented the LENCO. To outshift the MASTER. ha. Ha. . on LeNco. Ronnie still out shifted them all. . I was privved. To his secert to speed shifting., As He Was My Instructor . R.I.P. ole boy.. ill tell our story. For ever.
He was a great guy I knew him somewhat my family knew him well , as his brother sold cars at Dick Shirley Chevrolet in Burlington N.C. I would go in his shop when he had it In Graham with a man who was long time friends with him. Defentily a racing legend.
mr 4 speed was the "SLICKEST SHIFTER" of all time! I had pics of his s/s gtx and pro stock 'CUDA, on my wall! If you can find it, look up in car recording of SOX bang-shifting his MOPAR. RIP Ronnie Sox.......
i miss those days.we had 6 drag strips within a 100 miles.i ran stock, super stock, mostly modified production.when they started going from 1/4 mile to 1/8 mile i started losing interest.i had a factory 413 hemi in dodge dart, tried the 409 a bit,but couldnt seem keep from throwing rods so i went to 327,350s.my best run was 10.20 in 57 chevy with 327.it blew at finish line and i drove it back to car hauler on 6 cylinders.i knew it had wipeout anyway.i went to 350 in camaro but never got the 10.20 run.just didnt find the fun in 1/8 mile.time you go thru the gears its time to stop. i am 65 and disabled.would love to sit in one one last time going the 1/4 mile but nobody around here hot rods anymore
The TriFecta of drag racing......when they signed with Chrysler in 1965 Jake had a 427 THUNDERBOLT that he sold through ATWATER FORD and the T-Bolt sat on the lot for months...
I REMEMBER THEM IN THE RAMBLER AMERICAN I BELEIVE BLUE WINDOWS AND REMEMBER ABOUT A FLYWHEEL COMING OUT AT THE STARTING LINE CAUSING ENJURY IM THINKING IN VIRGINIA
You forgot Ronnie went back to the Comet running Pro-Mod. When he raced at Maple Grove he came out with a replica of his beloved 64 Comet. And he said to the crowd," He did well with the Hemi. But he won more money and more races with his Comet."
As to mr. 4 speed. Ronnie was so auick on the shifter. No one was quicker. So they invented the Lenco. Well. Tough nuts to you. Lenco boys.. Ronnie still beat ya.. RONNIE SOX....... A. ...LEGEND . AND A GENTELMAN. .
Thanks to Sox&Martin for the glory days of drag racing.

Hats off. Knee taken to Mr.Sox!! But let’s not forget Mr. candless!

I met Herb Saturday at Carlisle. What a nice guy.
I admire Jake King as much as Ronnie and Buddy. His genius made those cars fly!!!

Doesn't Herb McCandeless (however you spell it) deserve a mention, definitely an important part of the team ?

It wasn't Mopar til the end. They did run some Fords in the '90's in IHRA Pro Stock. Had a huge crash in '95 in a Kasse Boss powered Ford Probe.
Built quite a few Sox and Martin model cars. My uncle Charlie used to match race against Grumpy Bill Jenkins
