CHL needs to make one major change.... do not expire the Education package if the player chooses to try European Pro or ECHL/AHL instead of school. Bottom line is Education is the priority. The minute you commit to NCAA D1-3, thats when you forfeit your CDN Education package. /full stop
Maybe CHL team can start paying for university courses while the player is playing for the CHL team. Example, a player who is on the Ottawa 67's will have the team pay for his courses at Carlton University or University of Ottawa.
Great video. Like you said: Time will tell, however, I think we will start to see more USports commitments from CJHL than we have seen previously. We all assume that kids are going to choose Low end D1 and D3 teams over USports but NCAA is extremely expensive for Canadians who don't get full-rides and D3 does not offer any athletic bursaries. Additionally, many Canadians don't want to write their SAT/ACTs and go through the process to become NCAA eligible. I can see the GOJHL only getting stronger from this as well. Currently it loses many players to the BCHL, AJHL, and OJHL but it is the main feeder league to many OHL teams and the partnerships are already formed. The trickle down could be great for this league as it can become a great feeder to Major Junior and heavily recruited for USports/D3.
This be great for UVT, Canisius, Niagara cuz campuses are very close to GTA and Montreal. Mercyhurst, RIT not far either with ferries. Clarkson St Lawrence too
Leagues that will get better with a trickle down effect: Major Junior, NCAA Div 1, NCAA Div 2/3, ACHA Leagues that will get worse with a trickle up effect: USports, ACAC, BCIHL, USHL, BCHL, Junior A/Tier 2, Junior B/Tier 3, Prep, U18 AAA
@ I’m not saying it’s better to go D2/D3, I’m just saying it will get better from what it was while USports will get worse compared to what it was. I still think USports will be better, but the gap in skill between USports and D2/D3 will be smaller than what it was
Facilities under D1 are not that great. They are likely on par with USports. I cannot imagine Canadiens who cannot get D1 would opt to go D3. Plus D3 is never free. There is no scholarships. If Major Junior still pays then it will be for USports only, and players can only get free education there.
Does it feel like US players will have fewer opportunities that is kind of killing the USA hockey program. Canada has more ice sheets per capital population and AAA is alamsot every town, cost is double less. Horrible decision for USA born players. It does feels like Canadian made a decision that is in USA hockey. This current administration made every effort to destroy American dream. NCAA is all about money from ESPN broadcast
High CHL draft picks born from the USA will start showing up to CHL camps now and take up CDN born spots away. Its a win/win or lose/lose no matter where you are from

Why is hockey Canada now allowing players from rogue leagues (BCHL) to join CHL teams (sanctioned hockey)? This should not be allowed. Their own rules on unsanctioned hockey should be the same across the board including for Major Junior. Hockey Canada is very bias toward Major Junior and this strengthen the BCHL stance that Hockey Canada does not care about Junior A in the country.
In my opinion NCAA Div 1 is the big winner as it stands unless Major Junior leagues come up with some rule to keep their 18 and 19 years old in the leagues. If they don't Major Junior might become more or less a U18 league. Sure they'll take away from Junior A leagues the best 16 and 17 years old that previously played Junior A to keep NCAA eligibility, however I can see most players even top end, going NCAA at 18 after they complete high school. What about the scholarship money Major Junior players receive? Will it apply for NCAA schools?? Or only Canadian schools? That could mean NCAA teams won't need to give full ride as Major Junior teams would pay for players to play NCAA. Doesn't make much sense to me. CHL leagues win in terms of getting the best of the younger talent, but they also may be losers by losing that talent quickly to NCAA. They might just become a stepping stone to NCAA and therefore losing the battle to NCAA in terms of direct promotion to pros including NHL. USHL will still be stong in my opinion but will need to adjust to align with CHL leagues. Fewer Canadians will go USHL now i think. The big losers are all the Tier 2 (USA) and Junior A leagues (Canada). They will lose top end players that in the past would have played there to retain NCAA eligibility. Don't count on late bloomers to go play Major Junior at 18, or 19 after playing Junior A...Major Junior will focus even more so on getting 16 and 17 years old, not that they didn't before. Overall in my opinion I'm not sure this is the best move for all players as claimed. Instead of having 2 streams which allowed more players to play and showcase at relevant levels to pursue hockey (Major Junior, and Junior A), there will now be just one stream (Major Junior) for to end players to pursue making Junior A less relevant. Furthermore unless CHL makes a rule to keep their 18, 19, and even 20 years old players, the focus will be even more so only on very young top end players. This will negatively affect the guys that develop a bit later at 19 or 20.
Tier 2 leagues in CAN lose out but NAHL, NCDC are for Americans who can’t make USHL. I don’t picture Americans picking Major Juniors over USHL. CAN too cold.
There is already 9 American teams in Canadian Major Junior leagues, which is more than half the number of USHL teams. As for to cold in Canada, the USHL is all based in the northern Mid West and Central USA...very cold winters there.
Im still not convinced Major Juniors is better than USHL/NAHL. I want to see some head to head matchups on a yearly basis for a few years to determine this.
This is going to destroy Canadian college hockey more than junior hockey.
It’ll definitely make an impact

This is a great video! As some one who doesn’t really follow jr hockey but likes to watch ncaa, this is super informative!

Why go D2/3 instead USports? D2/3 is not free ride. USports will be still. Unless Hockey CAN agrees pay for D2/3.

Great summary, Braeden. Hope that you are well!
Think more colleges will add hockey. UDub, Col, Utah, maybe even UCLA, USC will add. UNLV has a decent team in lower levels. May as well jump.
Can a OHL player who just finished high school at age 18 get out of his contract to go play NCAA hockey?

How will if affect SPhl and Fphl?
How many commitments would the BCHL and NAHL have
What happens for US players who need a gap year? Can they go play in the CHL?
Yes.

Totally agree from my perspective.
CAN has lower pop but hockey is still very expensive cutting out many people. America larger population.

Do you think D3 schools will start to offer some scholarship money
D3 doesn't do any scholarships in any sport
Who’s will play Usports now?
Junior A players
@ yeah that’s what I thought, I was asking him though because he says Jr A will mainly be D3
Tier 3 junior players, EHL USPHL, pay attention.
Why?
Do we think that more U.S. born players will end up attending Canadian Schools and play USports?
Only time will tell.
What about all those gap year kids? No more BCHL or USHL? Just go straight to CHL?
Really hurts the American players.
Why hurt American players?

@ not as bad as Prince Albert, Prince George, Val Dor, Rouyn Noranda, Baie Comeau et etc
This means nothing to 98% of all young hockey players that will never play after high school or Junior level hockey
Good now NHL rookies will be bigger more fit muscular.
What are the chances the USHL joins the CHL as a 4th league?
Definitely worth speculating about, might happen, only time will tell!
NAHL should be 5th since is on par with QMJHL and weaker teams in CHL.
