    To add onto the coaches getting paid, depending on the program a high school head coach will make anywhere from 5-15k and many of these coaches are teachers within the school district. On the youth side, again depending on the program and size some coaches do get paid, but 85% of what goes on in youth hockey from logistics, coaching, scoreboard... it is all parents and community volunteers, which shows the commitment people have to the game here

    Honestly your last point is very sad. The privatization of youth sports is trash and making sports unachievable for many people. This will most likely cause a massive decline in youth participation in hockey outside of maybe a few select states like MN that work hard to keep the sport as affordable as possible.

    I had a gym teacher who was a scout for the Washington Capitols. His schedule was insane during the season and before computers were a thing in the early 80's, he had two full filing cabinets on scouting reports of the players in state. After the 80 Olympics, teams didn't want to miss out on the next big player from Minnesota.

    "Costs quite a bit of money" / "Costs will increase" - these things are said with such certainty yet don't the very producers of this video stand to profit from this model? And make no mistake about it, it is a model. Countries like Sweden and Finland punch far above their (population) weight and hockey costs a fraction of what it does in North America. Let the money grab continue...

      yeah it's stupid. like everything in the US it's all about making money. This shift to privatization of youth sports is stupid. gone, at least for now, are the days of Rec/city/house leagues for all sports except for the very youngest but I mean they are not starting "AAA" travel programs at U8. I don't even really remember that being a thing until U12 or maybe even U14. It is so sad. Sports in generally are quickly becoming a rich man's game and hockey being one of the worst.

    Any chance I could get your opinion on the FSL (female super league). My daughter has been asked to play for one of the academies, its U14 so she is still young and quite expensive for us due to the travel. $35k all in, for us thats a lot. The academy is pushing that its an investment into her future, Im torn as she would have to also move 5 hours away. Girls hockey is SO unknown.

      Honestly the only league who benifits from it is the CHL. U sports takes the biggest hit. All the Jr leagues that feed the NCAA lose big time. And the NCAA also loses. Players would end up playing out their Jr elidgibilty to get the full CHL scholarship package, which would make the play on the ice in the NCAA better but they would lose all their future NHLers, and thats what the market in the NCAA is for. Theres very little American market for 22-26 year old players who missed the nhl by hair. And late blooming players get the worst of it because there is now no league they can legitimately get noticed in. Which will eventually make the NHL slightly worse by losing those players. All in all everyone except the NCAA’s biggest rival lose

      @@modernman7576 i know from s friend that they are only full if they’re Canadian universities but the commercial where they brag about it they say “North American” so im assuming they get the AVG Canadian tuition price if they go to the U.S and then pay the difference or something but given the NCAA offers more full rides than any U sport division except the AUS (and RESQ only for Quebec born players) they’ll still come out ahead of U sport. It could backfire though, the ones who don’t get full ride offers in the NCAA might draw their teammates to stay in Canada and the NCAA might be completely screwed. I doubt that will happen, either way though it will create a product the NCAA has no ability to market

    Good to hear about all of this information. My grandson is in AAA at 14U. He really hasn’t come from a hockey family and has learned and has natural talent toward the game. He’s above average but not one of the better players. But he has a great mind and has speed but lacks a hard shot. I forward all these videos to him as some of what you provide free is very interesting. Hockey isn’t a cheap sport. I’ve know some former coaches who try to give back but it’s hard because of costs. But when you talk about education, that’s important first and foremost to after hockey. I was a welder for about 20 years. I worked with a former NHLer. He played for Detroit and welded in Windsor during the off season. He played before Gordie Howe made it to Detroit. Eddie Bruneteau got me to get my oldest boy skating and even my second son. My grandson is much better at this age than my sons. A lot of verbiage but I respect what you do.

    In Minnesota, high school hockey fees are often covered if a student just mentions they’re struggling to pay. This help usually comes from teammates or their families who are better off. Growing up in Minnesota, then moving around before coming back, I've seen firsthand how "Minnesota Nice" shines in the hockey community. It’s a tight-knit, family-like environment. A lot of high school players have been skating together since they were five and younger all dreaming of playing in the state tournament. This friendship,connection, and love for the game is 100% why so many come back to play in the tourney and no matter where they are status wise or whatever, on that rink your just a kid playing on pond versus kids next door, its all about the "i kicked your ass last weekend on the pond!" type of vibe! For anyone from Minnesota, it’s obvious that the tournament is more than just a competition.They’re probably buddies with people on the other team too, having spent countless hours playing together on local ponds and lakes. It’s a bunch of kids who love skating and hockey who have often been playing together and alongside each other and became friends in a way. while also playing against people they’ve known for years, one final and last time on the biggest stage.

    One thing that was mentioned was that only the top 15-20 schools have scouts watching games. In 2023-24, there were 233 men’s D1 players from MN, and they came from 69 different HS programs. Whether it’s Edina or La Crescent-Hokah, scouts will find talent. Having the ability to stay at home through high school and play at the highest levels is an incredible perk of the non-profit community-based hockey model in Minnesota.

    The pyramid of levels is upside down. In BC (and AB is very similar), where 20 years ago AAA (draw zone system) was the only top level option for players. Now AAA, Prep school (CSSHL), and private academies (JPHL) all fight for players at the top of the pyramid. There is players playing at that level that 20 years ago wouldn't even have made AAA and AA. CSSHL is 25k+ per year with some program being up to 60k+ per year. JPHL is 20k to 25k a year. AAA is about 20k a year. Many kids cant afford that and they just play local Rep hockey where they dont have the same level of coaching, ice time, off ice training, and general elite sports lifestyle education.

    That is a really interesting concept. I'm still personally torn on the whole privatization of youth sports. It is really driving up the overall cost of participation in any sport, not just hockey. This really builds a massive barrier of entry and could be stifling the growth of the sport IMHO. Is Hockey Canada really that bad that they need these private unsanctioned leagues? I personally don't have any experience with this. I live in MN and absolutely love the community based MN hockey model. I think its amazing and is the #1 reason we produce so many players and are the state of hockey. I am curious to follow this and see if these private leagues turn out to be a better model that produce more and or better players or not.

  • @briant7239
    @briant7239 13 днів тому

    The biggest observation is that MN State government seems to subsidize hockey through taxes. So rinks are 24/7 and teams are free. In every other state, whether A to AAA, it is pay (a lot of money) to play, so the cost portion prevents many players from participating at a high level. Because of this free to play model, most kids will play this sport, which increases the volume of players who will participate bantams and achieve to a higher level. That doesn't mean the top end quality is necessarily better than other states, but certainly volume-wise, MN will produce more players. But just know that the MN residents are paying for it through their school and property taxes, which is probably higher than most other places.
