What REALLY happens in KLONG TOEY, Thailand

  • Today I visit Klong Toey, often referred to as a "slum" or portrayed as a dangerous neighborhood. Klong Toey is Thailand's largest slum area by title, however, if you go to Klong Toey and interact with the locals, you will see the overwhelming friendliness of the people within. This Bangkok neighborhood is one of my favorites to visit, today I bring my mate ‪@JackTorr‬ and we come to drink some beers and enjoy great times with the locals in Klong Toey. Throughout my travels of Thailand, I have yet to see a single Dangerous Neighborhood, or even be in an area I feel uncomfortable.

The value of that land is exceptionally high, situated in the heart of the city and conveniently close to everything. It's not surprising that people are determined to hold onto it, even if it wasn't originally theirs. In Thailand, there's a legal clause that allows individuals to claim ownership of a property if they've occupied it long enough, and if the property owner neglects to take legal action to remove them or collect rent. This legal provision makes it understandable why some are eager to secure their claim to the land.
The owner of that land was the Thai Port Authority, and they were so overwhelmed that some people lived there, paying rent while others didn't. Over time, the situation grew more complex and difficult to resolve. Pursuing legal action against each resident in court would have taken hundreds of years! So, their solution was to offer a deal to the slum residents.
The previous government proposed a deal for those living in the canal-side slums. The government would invest in building proper homes for them, eliminating the need for makeshift structures that blocked waterways and caused city flooding. In exchange, residents had the opportunity to purchase these homes at a very low interest rate. While this approach might seem unfair to those who followed the rules, it was the best solution for the situation. Many families chose to participate in this project, resulting in thousands of completed houses that significantly improved the area.
However, the situation in Klongtoey was unique. It wasn't just a densely populated village; it was also home to legitimate businesses, not drug dealers or criminal organizations but decend people live there many even be able to get their kid gradution and still refuse to move away. Simply constructing towers and relocating people wouldn't suffice. Without a central market center and it will change the way of life of peoplr to unknow Im sure many will refuse. Attracting investors would be challenging. The location was so prime, situated near a highway-subway station and alongside the river - an ideal place for building upscale condominiums and shopping centre if the slum gonna even myself would like to move to live in that location.

Hi Adam. Hands down, this is by far the best video from you in a long time. I myself, have been over to the Khlong Toei Railway community a couple of times when I was in Bangkok last year. They are really friendly people, who just want to talk to you. I soon realised, that they don't get hardly anybody from outside visiting them. I love the railway community and I could easily fit in if I were living down there. By the way, the little food stand at the entrance to the railway line (off the main road junction), does a really good Pad Krapow. I've had it there a couple of times, really really nice, and only 50Baht.

My dad worked at Kru Phrateep's foundation 30 years ago. It's a foundation that lifted up the quality of life in the Klong Toei community. It wasn't that bad, even back then. But the Western media keep collecting footage of garbage and drunken uncles 🤣🤣🤣
The area was much better. Klong Toei has come a long way.

  • @MornJaaw

Basically, Thai people do not like to have problems, no matter who they are with, but Thai people have a high sense of self-protection. Tourists of any nationality need not worry because Thai people know very well that Tourists come to visit and then return to their homes. Most of the time, Thai people often have problems with other Thai people. As you know, Thailand is not a rich country, social inequality still exists and to protect ourselves from being taken advantage of. Therefore, we often express ourselves that we will not tolerate being taken advantage of. It is our Thai instinct. Tourists will have no problems if they do not destroy the dignity of Thai people. But you probably understand that everywhere there are good people and bad people. In Thailand, if you surround yourself with more good people than bad people, you won't experience bad things alone. So, I apologize if my language is difficult for you to understand. I use google translate

Truthly , many residents of slum are not poor ,they hve job and earn more money enough to buy their own houses. But many residents here still live there according to the place near the places ,they work.

Yeah people tend to like to see negative videos of people from different races and cultures. It make them feel secured that they already have better lives if not the best in humanity to see people in the other side of the earth living miserable lives. What is more painful and pissing off is the truth that that kind of videos always got much more views and likes. Medias in the west just don't care for truths and they feed this kind of viewers/audiences with non-stop negative misinformation.

Just behave normally, and don't get involved with drugs or loan sharks etc. Same with gun violence and youth gangs, it exists there as it does everywhere else in Thailand. Khlong Toei not sure who sees it as a dangerous area? I know it's considered a slum, but really it's 1 of the last old school bankgkok areas and its prime for development. Ps, the som tum lady is speaking laos to you❤

Every country has good and bad people. It is up to you how you behave. If you behave well, you will meet good people. If you behave badly, you will meet bad people. Have fun traveling. Thailand welcomes everyone.

Excellent video Adam! I've become a confirmed subscriber, & for me, your vids are the most interesting & informative Thailand vids I've seen to date. (I also watch and enjoy Tim Newton's daily news roundups). I like the honesty of your vids, & appreciate the fact that you square up to the negative media and hype that gets pushed on social media!!!

Many of those people are from Isaan. When the lady asked you "Sep Ba?" about your food the answer is "Sep Lai" if it's delicious. That's Isaan. Aroy Mak, mai? is the same thing in Thai. Fun video to watch. Make your own decisions where you travel and visit. Love it!. Everyone is different.

Klong Toey is really quite safe. wandered round there at night countless times. Cannot say the same for all parts of BKK eg some parts of backwoods LadPrao BangKapi etc (much easier to get in problems where moto gangs are riding past in lonely suburban sprawl areas).
Im sure dangers are wverywhere I woildnt walk around there with 5urn gold chains but nothing wrong with it.
What you see is the front of the houses but many of them back onto the klongs and are quite the shacks.

I’m Thai, born in Bangkok but now I live in Chicago, USA. I was roaming around Bangkok on my bicycle by myself by the time I was 5. There is no such thing as a dangerous neighborhood. The entire country is friendly. But here in Chicago, you’d be shot in some ghetto by a stray bullet if you’re not careful.
