    I add my vote with commenters below - go used. The original owner paid the depreciation for you and had all the initial defects fixed for you. If you get 2 or 3 years old, you'll be a winner! IMHO. ( I bought a 2-year old used class A and never looked back it was a really good unit and deal)

      Agreed, hard to justify new, especially since you stated you anticipate only a few weeks a year going between destinations.
      Your best bang for buck will be used.
      Also keep in mind anything on a sprinter chassis will require a MB dealer that is sprinter certified (not all MB dealers are - actually probably about 10% maybe?), I had to drive (or tow🤬) to next state to get sprinter service for my 2017 ERA, passing 4 MB dealers along the way!
      I eventually traded into a Travato K. Much happier, pretty much any dodge dealer can service a promaster.
      Food for thought!

    I agree with you, Class B's are mostly priced a bit high. Tough to justify comparing with your boat or a Class A or C. But on the other hand I can see how nice it would be to park anywhere you want with a small Class B. I can totally understand your want for one versus your Mini and staying in hotels. Much to be said about sleeping in your own bed.

    Hey you two. Good to see you online. Ok...my wife and I just watched and here's our perspective FWIW.
    *You're looking for a larger vehicle because:*
    1) You have a lot of stuff you're always carrying back and forth and need more room
    2) It has to be under 20'
    3) More comfortable on long drives
    4) Only are looking to maybe stay 3-4 weeks total/yr. at local State Parks, RV Resorts etc.
    5) Currently looking at Class B's that are out the door ranging from $120K - $140K or there about
    *Here's our thinking if it was us:*
    • Buy a mini van ( heck, a new one if you want)-that's towable 4 down-trick it out some and say spend tops $50K
    - That solves #1 thru #3
    • Then the 3 -4 weeks/yr. you want to go to State Parks etc. rent a cabin and the times you feel you really want or have to go boon-docking, hook the van up to the bus and go
    *In conclusion, you'll save $75 - $100K or so and solve most all your issues. That money saved will buy a whole lot of cabin rental and leave a ton of extra cash for other fun, and toys. And besides, do you really need another complicated vehicle to maintain and chase problems? You guys IMO are busy enough already. But it is fun to look isn't it?*

    In your requirements (size, price, technology, practicability), Hymer Aktiv 1.0 is really it. You were right to look at it first time around and wrong to walk away this time. How often are you going to put bed up or down? Most people using Aktiv leave bed down most of the time and still have plenty of space under the bed for storage/doggie bed/cat litter box. And the mattress is something that can be easily replaced if that is your concern. You could go with Travato style mattress by just ordering memory foam and going with custom sleeve for the mattress. Would cost you almost nothing. Aktiv is also relatively inexpensive even with full lithium package and it fits in almost any parking space, especially if you remove spare wheel at the back.

    • @Technomadia
      @Technomadia  5 років тому

      While the Aktiv didn't impress us much the second time around, that doesn't mean it's not still on the list. But the recent Hymer news does give us great pause as to the sustainability of the company in the near term.

    • @user-ym6lc7pk1e
      @user-ym6lc7pk1e 5 років тому +1

      @@Technomadia Yes, the company is in turmoil and it is a huge concern in regards of post sales support. Agree with you on that point entirely. Any sane person should not buy Roadtrek or Hymer brands until we get a clarity of the situation and new management at the top. My comment was more in regards of layout and your remarks regarding bedding. With compact size being a huge priority, you really only have Carado, Simplicity and Aktiv to choose from and, IMHO, Aktiv is the best of the three from practicality, technology and features included for the price. There is also Sprinter based Aktiv, which is an interesting alternative if you want Mercedes chassis instead of RAM Promaster (aka Fiat Dukato).

    As many have said, look into the pre-owned market especially at the Pleasure-Way Lexor TS (twin sofa) or FL (front lounge) since Pleasure-Way's quality appealed to you both. Both the Lexor TS and FL have the larger bathroom than the Ascent, which you liked at the show, and a bit longer than the 19'7" sprinter coming in at 20'11" for the 3500 Promaster chassis. The interior of the Lexor is about four inches wider than the Mercedes choices, and their wall lines are straighter from floor to ceiling giving a less closed feeling. Also, less expensive than the Mercedes Sprinter choices with the exact coach amenities. Think 2017 or 2018 models, with optional solar panels, which have both the lithium ion batteries plus the 2000 watt inverter. Prior to 2016, they had a smaller inverter... I believe only 450 watts even with the lithium batteries. Look at RVtrader.com, RTV.com, and rvunivers.com for the used market choices, and even join the facebook page for "Pleasure-Way Owners and Wannabees" for great info regarding owner's experience and some leads to probably well cared for rigs...
    With all that said... I just got an accepted offer on a 2017 Pleasure-Way TS, which of course is the Mercedes, but I truly wanted that chassis over the Promaster (Lexor model) as for my personal choice. ( Longer travels, better fuel mileage, and a more comfortable cockpit.) I'm super excited, but not in the finalized stage yet, so I must be patient!! I have been obsessed over researching Class B's for the past several months, so if you have any questions, feel free to reach out!! Thank you for the nice video and good luck in your continued adventures!!

    Enjoyed the tour. I'm still lusting for a (brand new) mid 1960's VW campervan. Why, oh, why won't auto makers in this country offer a reasonably priced camper that will fit inside a standard garage? I think the auto/rv industry is missing the mark on this idea. They'd sell a million of 'em...

    • @dianeneary4672
      @dianeneary4672 5 років тому +1

      That's exactly the size I'd want. I already have garage space in my urban co-op building. I couldn't afford to pay for additional garage space.

    • @rhondalyn100
      @rhondalyn100 5 років тому +6

      That's the size many, MANY of us want, Diane! My theory is that the rv industry won't design and sell a small camper van because of the low profit margin per unit. The industry is short sighted not to realize this size rv would make money by quantity sold. They are making huge profits by pushing out large poorly designed cheaply produced junk so why bother to recreate and redesign the old VW bus? To add insult to injury, rv lobbyists have made it impossible for Americans to import small well designed efficient Euro camper vans. To me, the bottom line is greed.

    Greetings from Saguaro SKP park Benson lot 194:-) Was excited to hear you were a new leaseholder just a few lots from mine - but disappointing to hear you're not coming to Benson this winter-:(
    I've followed your blogs/vlogs for several years now and thank you for sharing!
    Today I noticed a new UA-cam video detailing your search for a van camper.
    I understand you're searching for something short ( less than 20 feet ) but full featured. Personally I own an Airstream Westfalia - which I use as both a daily driver and for my summer travels to escape the desert heat!
    Only 250 of these unique van campers were imported into the USA in 2005/2006. The van is a Mercedes Sprinter model year 2004 and the camper conversion was done by Westfalia in Germany. Airstream was the importer/distributor.
    On a rare occasion one of these comes up for sale. Last week I noticed one for sale in the Bay area. Here is a link to the for sale listing: sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/cto/d/richmond-2005-airstream-sprinter-camper/6783905170.html

    Sounds like a good idea. You could explore the lands around the marina while on the great loop and still be able to get out west from where ever you stop cruising in the winter. What you save in hotels certainly would help with the cost. Maybe used might fit you needs. When the snow birds migrate north for the summer you may find a great deal. Happy sailing.

    If you decide to go longer, I love the Lazy Daze Twin King. It’s not $140,000, even when new. I think it’s around $100k new. A used one can easily be $50k or less. It’s well built, open, full bathroom and kitchen, and a nice lounge that converts to a bed. Plus it’s a class c so there’s a bed/ storage over the cab. No slide outs- that’s a plus for me!! Only thing that doesn’t fit your needs is that it’s 24 feet.

    I'm looking at the 2018 Pleasureway Lexor TS because of it's quality build, the lithium battery, solar and it's short length. I wanted gas versus diesel since some of the states don't carry the diesel that keeps the mfg. warranty secure and I understand more states will be following the trend. The 2019 has a couple minor changes color in the bath, larger kitchen sink, and upholstery on front seats but didn't in my mind make up for the difference in price between the '18 and the 2019. I believe it is Ultramobility website who compares and grades vans and overall gives Pleasureway a very high grade. Good luck, doing the math hotel stays might be ahead, but they don't offer the convenience of your own space or the convenience of stopping wherever you want. After all, you are still 'campers' aren't you ?

    Building your own rig is so much better -- you get the things (technology, comfort) that you want and avoid the things that really don't matter to you. If you can't do it yourself, have one of the outfitters do it. Infinitely better quality and customized.

The advantage here would be you could pull all that stuff out and have a huge cargo space when using it as a regular vehicle. The downside, is no bathroom which seemed important to you.

    I too am looking for a 19 foot & your observations are right on the mark! While I am still looking for the right fit, my husband and I camp in the mini-van. I would recommend looking at the Chrysler Pacifica. The interior folds flat, has all of the bells & whistles - towing hitch, cameras, sensors, roof rack, etc. They sell a tent that connects to the back which extends the space for air flow when sleeping. You could probably hook up solar to the top and charge a battery. The sky's the limit.
    If you buy one I recommend purchasing in Florida. We saved a bundle by finding a good price and then price matching.

It was a 2013 with about 123k miles, and prices online are in the $33K range for those they presently have for sale. It wouldn't hurt to check them out on their website and see if any tickle your fancy. It seems silly and overkill to buy an expensive new rig considering the use you have planned. They remove their decals and put one on that calls it Majestic. Hey, you never know. It's just the right size for parking easily.

    We have a 2018 PleasureWay Ascent and already have 18,000 miles on it. We have loved it but with any new rig you will probably have bugs that need to be worked out so make sure you have access to PW technicians, especially on the road. If you can get something a few years old you will probably be better off. However, the Pleasureway warranty is not transferable. If you end up getting a PW, you might want to check out my YT channel. @@Technomadia We had an issue with our propane line that I thought was a refrigerator problem. It took some time for the dealer to figure it out but eventually we got it resolved. The problem we encountered was when we tried to get a dealer to look at it on the road. They all claimed they were booked for weeks or months. We finally found a helpful dealer in Colorado Springs (we live in So Cal), but while they thought they had discovered the problem, they hadn't. We have never been charged for anything but we are the original owners. Because of the technician shortage (regardless of the brand), it can become quite frustrating when you are on the road--which would always apply to you guys. Check out their on line map of dealer locations. The other issue most people don't consider is that the components (fridge, air, heaters, etc.) are all warranted by the manufacturer, not PW. PW is only warrantying their build. That said, we have been very pleased with the build quality of PW. Here is my email if you need any more info: energymaven@gmail.com

      Had our PW TS for 6 yrs now -- only prob was a defective water pump, which they replaced no questions asked. PW typically has a very good resale value. In Canada the warranty is transferable I was told. Our van is about 23' with the continental spare. No trouble fitting into 99 percent of city parking spots, including malls, gas stations etc. We're very happy and would recommend. One way to save depreciation is to buy a new one that is approaching a yr old on the lot. They get big incentives to clear them out. They took 30k off ours!

Queen bed, shower separate from toilet and theater reclining salon seats. Great to see you back on the RV side of life.
    You have opened up an entirely new level of consciousness in terms of RV buying. I never would have thought you would be in the market for a Class B - but after watching your video I completely understand - it's genius! I think it makes perfect sense for both of you. I cannot really offer any new insights or advice in which van to consider - it seems you are already looking at the best ones. I have always liked Leisure Travel Vans but they are pricey and probably too large for your needs - but they have great quality and interesting designs. Did you look at any of the Airstream vans?
    Too bad we missed seeing you at the Tampa RV show 2 days ago. We did attend it for 2 days and managed to meet a number of other Vloggers - LJMJ, RV Love, Eat See RV, as well as seeing that Pippi was there too. Since we could not be in Quartzsite this year then Tampa was the place to be! But we were also primarily looking at Class A's, and not at all at Class B's. Not that we are looking to get out of our 2005 Winnebago Adventurer as we have done so much to it to make it really livable and comfortable for us. But it is nice to see what new models have to offer - and nothing at the show blew us away - at all. Just more variations of the same. With a BIG leaning towards the higher end, really pricey Class A's > 40' (not for us).
    But it was an interesting show to attend after becoming full timers and living in our RV most of the past year. We have already traveled coast-to-coast and have learned a great deal about what features & amenities are important. I guess our biggest take-away from the show is that it seems that most RV designers have never really RV'd in their life, because we have found that it is the "little" touches and features which really help determine user friendly functionality in an RV. And most of the new models we trekked through were sorely lacking in many small, but important details.
    Again - too bad we missed meeting you at the show as we would have liked to at least say Hi. Good luck in your van search!!

    I think you are being a little overly restrictive on length. The travato looks like a winner to me ether in its new form with lithium or a used one that is a few years old. That said I live somewhere where I regularly have to dodge four door long bed trucks trucks that are sticking well outside of their parking space. So I might have a somewhat warped view on vehicle length

      Agreed, for the price point in new the Travato has a lot going for it. Lithium versions can be purchased around $110k and well under $100k for generator models.
      But if you’re anticipating staying in it only a few weeks through the year, your best bang for buck will be used.
      I had a 2017 ERA on sprinter, at 24’ too long and had a few sprinter issues but had to go into next state to find a MB dealer that was sprinter certified to service. That’s a bummer for Anything on a Sprinter Chassis.
      I traded the ERA into a Travato K.
      Much happier. Gas gen, bigger bath, airy open space inside.
      I recommend going with the promaster chassis - Dealer network is way better and the gas motor is popular with almost any repair shops.

    Typically I would suggest almost any Camping/Traveling van in a Ford Model with a Quigley 4x4 Modification. Used of course and pre-sprinter design. With or without a raiseable or lifted roof addon/extension.
    The costs would be not necessarily cheap, but these vehicles, used, do maintain their value quite well, and if the documentation is missing when purchased you can contact the various companies that helped do the build-out and get all the necessary documentation. Additional expenses will go out to get Solar, Batteries, etc, but anyone I have suggested this route too has never had a complaint, the 4x4 from Quigley use actual Ford Parts to build out their 4x4 mods, so there is no searching for exotic or special parts, and being a 4x4 can be naturally set up for towing by y'all's bus (Though I would also recommend that additional electronic break upgrade for any towed vehicle of this weight/size for towing.
    Or something like this:
    ua-cam.com/video/zGDKL3pJbsQ/v-deo.html
    www.cruiseamerica.com/buy/modelDetails.aspx?modelID=125&Make=Thor%20Majestic%20&ModelNo=19G&Model=19G
    Occasionally you can find these 4x4 mods with Quigley or Agile Off Road brands (Quigley is superior, but has a longer waiting period IF you need to have van converted to a 4x4, but would be well worth time to do so.)
    May not be what you are looking into, but just my 2 cents and what I have recommended to others in the past.
    Good luck you two and keep on keeping on

    That’s some serious outside the box thinking to come up with the idea of a camper van to get you between your boat and converted bus, I like it! I’m going to suggest something to think about, and a recommendation.
    You mentioned three purposes for the van:
    1) Around the town vehicle while living in the boat
    2) transporting equipment between boat and bus
    3) camping in while transitioning
    If 80-90% of your usage falls under the fist two, you might think about something that’s more van, and less camper, “rough it” a little more while in transit, because you’ll be using those campground bathrooms anyway.
    Just a thought.
    Now a recommendation. We test drove a Mercedes Metris and it was a delight to drive (for a van), gets great MPG, and can haul a bunch more than the Transit Connect (which is also nice). We are getting one to tow our 24’ trailer as we prepare to go full time next year.

    • @Technomadia
      @Technomadia  5 років тому +1

      You forgot the 4th and likely more important purpose - 4) Camping while boat and filming for 'The RVers'. Our usage will have a strong component of camping, attending RV events, etc. . The next time if we buy this size I would insist on twin beds because the beds pushed up against the wall are the devil to make up and I have to use a step stool to climb onto the bed at night. Pleasureway is hands down quality wise the best. The only thing that's holding us back is the gas powered generator but we've heard (from Pleasureway) that the undermount generators run hot. If you are going to be staying in campgrounds with it, then you wouldn't have to worry about the generator as much. We keep going back to the Lexor FL for 2 reasons. The first reason is that we don't want to service a Mercedes and the problems that come with that. We also found the FL has an incredible difference in useable space up front (no room in the regular lexor for your feet when you swivel the chair) which gives you the option to keep the bed set up. One other thing - make sure you have leg room for sleeping as some of them are a little lacking which would make it hard for taller people. We want to buy used but people want their money out of them because they know they will get it.....almost makes me want to buy a bus and a boat. :)

    The Pleasure Way camper vans that seem the most open and roomy are the one with two twin beds that will convert to a king. Having a full width bath just behind the beds gives the most room for a dry bath. I'd go for a 3 year old model just so I'm not the one stuck with the initial huge depreciation.

Was gonna say if you go used, you can find some nice clean and good used ones out there, some look really nice and clean even at 20 yrs old. At that age range you can find used for like $40,000 or $50,000. Cheaper than those expensive new ones. If you really trying to pinch pennies some people find ones for $20,000 or $30,000. The 40-50,000 range shouldn't need much work on nice ones. Good luck in your search.
