    First and foremost, Thank You. After reading and rereading both books, watched every vid. Followed your suggestions for hardware. I finally had the courage to spend 35 days working on the road, traveling about 6600 miles. LOS Angeles to Maine and back. Perfect connection every time, able to stay connected with the office system. Again Thank You for all the work and guidance.

    That Netgear MIMO made all the difference when I was camped in a pecan grove. All those trees killed my access UNTIL i got that little Netgear. I won't leave without it. I use a soap dish with suction cups so this way I can just move the gear around to the best area and place them side by side.

    I spent my career in Telecom and your info was still helpful. We also have AT&T for Iphone plans along with Verizon Hotspot and OTR Hotspot(AT&T reseller). So far 13 months in this is serving us well. Verizon is unlimited but after 15G it is throttled. OTR is not throttled and I also use the Netgear Nighthawk. We have the Weboost system as well. Will continue to recommend your Mobile Internet Resource center to those looking for this information. Thanks for taking the time to be so thorough in your analysis and information.

    Thanks for the Netgear MIMO antenna tip. I have a booster, one if the cradle types that I’ve used on occasion with moderate success but the antenna seems like an easier and less expensive solution.

    Fantastic overview of what's available. I think for our coastal cruising a combo of a 8800L and the Netgear antenna will hit the sweat spot. Up till now we've simply pulled in video on the phone, and like you - just HDMI it to the TV and do hotspot off the phone to feed tablets/laptops. For a continuous presence for boat monitoring and also to set up a local WiFi network for the Roku stick, the 8800L w/antenna should be great.

    Simply a wealth of knowledge on each and every video. You inspired me to take that leap of faith to replace my wired home internet service. I purchased the Verizon Jetpack (unlimited, unthrottled) and a ShureCall 4g home version booster. I probably should have made this change years ago. Thanks to your very informative videos, I was able to put a system together that works. It's not 200 gigs download like Spectrum but I can run all of my computers, TVs, Ring security system and gaming consoles on it without any lag time. Tried the MiMo first but it did not give me the download/upload speeds like the booster. Had it aimed at the same cell tower. I still use it in the camper and love it for it's portability.

    AT&T is outrageous now, I have it at the moment, the plans keep offering less and charge a heck of a lot more. So now I'm trying out Vision to see how that works for us. We live in a rural area. So far I'm very pleased with it and even the speed, it's just been a few days.

    Watched you about 18 months ago when checking into mobile/cell and internet options on your other site. That info was quite helpful, just now stumbled on this UA-cam channel and glad I did. Thanks for great info. 13 years......WOW! We are only about 13 months in. Enjoying but expect we will find ourselves settled in Hawaii within 5-8 years and retire. ;) Or course we may just ship the Motorhome over and find some property upcountry Maui and continue the RV Lifestyle in paradise.

    Planning on staying put in RV parks 3 or 4 months at a time due to the nature of hubby's work.
    I've heard some RV park extended stay guests contract with the local cable company for cable internet, just don't know how to find these types of RV parks. I look at review websites, but most people think of TV when talking about cable. His job entails heavy use internet as he's in development support. He's got the ok for working remote, but most are in sticks and bricks with hard cable. 😐

    • @Technomadia
      @Technomadia  5 років тому

      It's unfortunately not an easy feature to find. You have to call and ask. But usually if they list cable TV, that means cable is already run to the site.. so that's a step in the right direction.

    Passing along good info by someone that knows a lot about infrastructure
    Brock Vanleer

    Here’s some detailed info for everyone in regards to network management & how networks actually operate. - signal strength & how many people are on a “tower” are really only one aspect of the equation, especially in regards to network management. When you use a tower, all your info is routed back to a switch room. Switch locations are usually not on site at the cell sites, rather they are scattered throughout the next nearest city in various locations, usually those big no-window buildings with a Verizon or AT&T symbol on them. I used to live down the block from a AT&T one. In a Major city like Los Angeles, the towers & switches are set up to handle hundreds of thousands of devices at any given time. Thus why network management is less likely to effect you as heavily in a urban setting. There’s way more capacity very close by. Speaking about Verizon specifically, when your in the desert and you see a tower sitting in the middle of nowhere, most of the time that tower is only receiving power from electrical lines heading to it and NOT fiber. Data is transmitted using large “repeater” dishes attached to the side to bounce signal from a switch room somewhere near a city hundreds of miles from tower to tower into the middle of no where. Since this is basically a big repeater array, there’s a lot of room for signal interference. But beyond that, it’s the issues with switches. It’s asking one switch to handle hundreds of miles of space on a repeater network. It just doesn’t make for great speeds. - AT&T set up their company very differently than Verizon. Most of their existing sites were buy outs from other companies during the great GSM acquisitions. Plus they had one of the nations most complete pre-existing network of existing cable work / permits for use out of anyone else since they were effectively one of the first in the telephone business in the states. A decent portion of AT&T’s network is actually hard wired in due to this, and they have a stronger network of switching stations available. - Another thing to heavily keep in mind is that LTE is a very general term for a very Broad spectrum. LTE exists in so many forms, from LTE Intro, LTE-Advance, LTE-MIMO, LTE- LAA Format, the list goes on and on and on. A cell site has to be completely updated in order to handle each new rendition of the tech, which just doesn’t happen that often. Dense urban centers like downtown LA have the backbone for the new MIMO / LAA format in place, which can allow for gigabit LTE speeds (a way to keep consistency between the soon coming 5G system), but that tech doesn’t exactly make sense for a small desert town of 2k people. Some locations are strictly in place for service only. I wouldn’t doubt for a second they may still be running intro level LTE antennas, which allow for a general 15-30MBps speed range in good conditions. LTE is a Evolution of the GSM / HSPSA backbone. Verizon is new to this game!!! Their CDMA / EVDO backbone had to be totally moved to this format, as everyone knows HSPSA destroyed EVDO in long term development. AT&T has been in this game for a long time, and the network was designed to handle this type of architecture from the 3G (HSPSA) beginnings. Verizon has always shelled more cash out for spectrum. But the game is getting closer by the day. I personally have Verizon on my iPhone XS (been trying to find a market which services LTE-LAA to test the gigabit speeds but haven’t found one yet) - and a netgear nighthawk LTE (AT&T’s first LAA format router) with a unlimited plus plan grandfathered from last year. I’ve had very little to no slow downs on AT&T in rural / metro markets, with the occasional exceptions here or there. If you have AT&T on a hotspot / unlimited plan... the NEW Nighthawks are coming out soon which will have the first ever chips which can use the 5G network. Save your pennies cause it’s worth the upgrade. - personal recommendation, the nighthawk allows for you to plug in a external router via Ethernet... I pare a Apple AirPort Extreme AC format WiFi I picked up used on amazon to my nighthawk and the speeds / stability of my network / range of WiFi couldn’t be better. Turn off any and all WiFi functionality on the hotspot and use it as strictly a hub to move LTE data in and out, and put the backbone of the work on the WiFi router. - Happy travels everyone!!

    That tip on the $27 antenna was worth a lot. I have Mobily and I took the sim and put it in a NetGear Unite and it has the antenna ports - will definitely be getting an antenna. My grandfathered T plan does not allow hotspot so I run PDAnet (Android only, toy phone not supported) to get around that silly restriction and it hides the fact you are running hotspot from big brother in Dallas. The Mobily is a great alternative to my Samsung Galaxy S9+ but regrettably, it does not work outside the U.S., at least I cannot get a tower lock in either Canada or Mexico.

    We’ve found that since we retired and are on the road, that we are enjoying the freedom FROM information. We have no TV in our rig and only use our ATT and Verizon iPhones for email and once-in-a-while news. If no signal, ‘taint no worry! There was no election stress this year and we really don’t care what’s going on in the world outside of our little campsite. Downloading of a new book or two onto our Kindles can wait until we hit a town and find a friendly wifi signal. But we do love your technical analysis! We’re still working geeks at heart, but we’re enjoying our techno-liberation, too.

    Mobile Data is crazy expensive in the US... I pay converted 24$ for an actually unlimited data/voice/text plan in Europe Switzerland, you just get a SIM card you can put in whatever you want. (phone, hotspot, modem etc.) I used 500GB last month, no slowdown or throttling what so ever, and crazy fast too, 300mbit in some places on a cat12 modem.

    Unfortunately I don't know enough about all of this to make an educated decision, the more I read the more confused I get. I'm just wanting internet mostly for watching TV. One person I talk to says the Nighthawk unit is the best, then the next person I talk to says the newer AT&T Wireless Internet device is better. I asked them if they had loaner units of each model to try out - they said no.

    I have a Project Fi plan and I can manually switch networks between T-mobile and Sprint. In Galveston T-mobile sucks badly but, works fine 20 miles up I45 where Sprint starts to suffer. Being able to switch manual has been a big boon as both networks are second rate compared to ATT. We'll see if the promise it will work outside the US with no extra cost pans out as I leaving the country in month.

      Project Fi is great as a smartphone plan and for flexible/light internet use. But not overly ideal as a home internet replacement at $10/GB (capped at $60 for up to 15GB).

    I'm probably not yhe only one here trying to absorb info on the technical side of things. So here is our story!
    Today is April 15, 2020. We have been in our house for 16 years. For the past 8 years we've been a verizon customer. Simply bcs the area we live in is pretty much a "DEAD ZONE" and verizon is the only provider that we can get. For christmas in 2019 we purchased 3 firestick devices for 3 t.v.'s little did we know bcs of Amazon's lack of detailed info and our lack of thorough research that we'd need a better internet service than what we currently have. We have the dinosaur jetpack I think is the 6620 for our desktop pc of course our 4 cell phones has thier own service but its all bundled together on our bill. We have 15gb unlimited data. Ok, the srevice works fine for just plain internet. At random our usual bars are anywhere from 1 to 3 bars and speeds are up n down all the time! I have been doing some research and Im at the point of doing the same thing with all of these devices just like the old women in the pep boys commercial and throw them through the front glass of the store!!! This has been an extremely frustrating journey trying to find something that works for where we live! Yes we know now that we live in a rural area and all these local providers say "YOU WILL NEED A 60FT TOWER ANTENNA" if I hear somebody say that to me one more time then Im probably gonna wind up in jail! That being said, I have found by accident that UNLIMITED LEASING is offering the 8800l with a CORPORATE BUSINESS UNLIMITED, NO CONTRACT and NO DATA CAP. I have checked around and I know the price is $200 for the device, through UNLIMITED LEASING the monthly price is $139. Is that the going rate for that particular plan? We dont travel simply bcs we cannot afford to. Hopefully one day we can. The bigger issue for us is. Unlimited leasing told me yesterday that they are currently out of stock till the 1st of May, but the issue is since we don't have access to any other source then how will we know if the 8800l will work for us? I am aware that we may have to purchase some kind of antenna but I sure don't want to have to pay another chunk of money for something thats just gonna make steam boil out of my ears! I am done being patient with the FCC and all these carriers that cant or wont bring a better solution to our town! Also yesterday I drove to another town to do some shopping and counted 5 different cell towers within a thousand yards from each other and our town has 1. That town has approximately 3000 people, this town has a thousand. Yes I know its bcs that town has a bigger population but what on earth makes those people more important to have that many towers in that location when the could have built atleast two of those towers here? Makes me so mad I wanna spit nails!

      Our focus is on MOBILE internet for RVers and boaters. Not stationary internet for rural. For a specific location, you have use trial and error to find your right solution.

    Im selling my sticks and bricks and moving into my RV full time in March or April of 19. I also will work full-time, business hours from my RV. Im wondering why you dont use a portable satellite like BGAN for your primary source and MiFi for back up. That was my intention although Im not yet locked in due to the timeline. Is it because most viewers would not invest the initial expense or is there a reliability issue? Since my work is during business hours I want a steady, reliable stream of connectivity, I don't want to be switching back and forth, and worrying while I work. Thank you for responding to this ahead of time!

    • @Technomadia
      @Technomadia  5 років тому +1

      The highest speeds you can get on BGAN is 512kbps (super duper slow).. and the cost is $3,850/GB. Not very practical or useful at all. But if you absolutely need connectivity everywhere, it might be an option.
      There are faster and lower cost satellite options - but the equipment is HUGE to carry with you and there are trade-offs. Our guide: www.rvmobileinternet.com/satellite
      We used to travel with a HughesNet dish.. but honestly, cellular is so prevalent, there's just not much need for it anymore.
      Adjusting to the realities of mobile internet requires re-defining the word 'reliable'.

    Do you guys ever use the wifi ranger router with more than 1 mifi's hooked to the usb port using an OTG USB Hub? You can use it to optimize your cell data and get higher bandwidth according to wifi ranger.

    • @Technomadia
      @Technomadia  5 років тому +1

      WiFiRanger has never supported USB hubs and you can only USB tether one mobile hotspot at a time, though the support has been on our wish list for them for years. If they told you otherwise, I think the support person might have been confused.
      We do however often connect multiple devices to a Ranger, but only one of them via USB.

After watching your videos you mentioned a Weboost 4G RV and the Winegard 4G LTE/wifi products. I am not a vloger yet, so all I do is watch you tube videos and now maybe Netflix. But I do need to stay connected by phone to my family, older members are ill. Would you recommend the Weboost or the Winegard as a start ? Second question, if I get Weboost first could I add the Winegard later, would it even matter. Again I'm just starting out and plan mostly East coast or Central traveling. I have AT&T as a carrier and my android phone has wifi hot spot, but I have been watching and saw the video about the Verizon jet pack and thinking about getting one with the plan. Hi, I am confused on the Pepwave Max-Br1-Mk2 router. You mentioned that you could add an outside antenna to your Cradlepoint router, now would that be just on the cellular side for a better cell signal, and not for wifi ? The way I understand it, is that the 2 wifi antennas are just for your interior boat or rv so your devices can pick up the signal from the router. Pepwave and Cradlepoint both have the 2 cellular and 2 wifi antennas already attached to them like in your video. So you could get a better cell signal with an outside cellular antenna, but an outside wifi antenna, on the wifi side, would not work to pick up the rv park or marina signal, right or no ?
    Thank you so much for helping me figure this stuff out.!! Running around in the Arizona desert.

    • @Technomadia
      @Technomadia  5 років тому +1

      As we said, that style router is best for those optimizing for cellular - not WiFi as WAN. You could put on an exterior Wi-Fi antenna - but it would not be optimal. For one, the antennas would be outside and serving double duty of receive/send - and roof mounted Wi-Fi is best as a CPE not antenna only. Our guide to routers and our individual reviews of both these products go into much more details.
