  • Snow day at Beacock Music! With the students gone I took some time to put a few notes through some more of their wall of saxophones. This time I tried a few Cannonball saxophones. All the horns look stunning I must say. A lot of my students have talked to me about how much they like the look of these horns and in the hand I have to agree that they give a little sense of the fancy. I definitely know saxophonists who prefer a more conservative appearance to their saxophones but time moves on without us and I have to confess that I've gone from not liking the wild looks to thinking they look pretty awesome. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the look and appearance of all my traditional lacquer horns and am all about most saxophone stuff. That's just it though. I find myself somewhat like Florentino Ariza in his indiscriminate love of books - I love most saxophones I try. I suppose that's why I don't review them or discuss their specific attributes more directly. All of that information is at the beck and call of a quick google search and in the end I like playing saxophones and listening to them. 99% of the time if it sounds bad its either taste, or the player actually not playing well. As you get to fancier stuff it can have such a difference in feel and a richness that while inaudible to most non saxophonists, no shade, just reality, we all hear the subtlety of our primary instruments most clearly and so we are prone to obsess more over them as the experience for ourself individually will be improved, I question though sometimes if it makes any difference on the outside of things. If I went back through my life and changed my tone or horn on all my gigs would my life be different or would it not have mattered? How similar would all of the moments have been? Ask this question of yourself as you contemplate these lovely Cannonball Alto Saxophones!!!!!

You play them all so well. That's very difficult to say wich is the best. That's a personell choice and you alone can find your instrument.

Does the Vintage also comes with the big bell and the fat neck ?

It's sort of its own thing, it isn't part of the big bell series and it comes with one neck that is designed for the vintage reborn. I think its all focused to be as "mark vi" of cannonball as possible.
