      Yeah, it used to cost your attack, your bonus action, a superiority die, AND your ally's reaction. And then it could miss.
      Had the potential to be phenomenal if your ally was stacked and had a really good attack, but it was a ridiculous action economy investment.

      @@austintacius If that is your view then we are in agreement. However, I have also shown in previous video comments that the fighter can out pace a full caster 1v1 which is in contradiction to the typical argument and the meta that has resulted in the gutting of most of the above average spells. Arguing that a caster is better because AOE can hit multiple is a poor argument because it is fairly easy to create a campaign where you encounter only single target combats and saying differently means you are potentially basing a character's power on a situation that could never come.

      For sure. I am the same to a degree, I defo want to optimise but I will go flavor first and THEN optimise. Make a character I can role play and then make it as powerful as I can. For example I wanted to play a melee magic dwarf weaponsmith, but i didnt want to go purelcass. So I decided on Eldritch Knight with 2 Arty levels. I was behind on core class features/feats and therefor meant i wasnt fully optimised, but the flavor was at 200% because of it. He was a security guard, and one of the infusions I took was the Tankard of Sobriety, and when I cast cure wounds for flavor I said I was imbuing the contents of the cup into something similar to a healing potion

    15:44 Ive been seeing the sentiment that "range isn't as good as melee now" pop up alot, and I think people kinda forget that despite the lack of DPR, range has the enourmous benefit of keeping you out of harm's way in many encounters. I'd even make the argument that ranged DPR shouldn't be as good as melee due to this favtor. Unless you commit to a GWM + longbow build, which is a big investment.

    • @nathans9764
      @nathans9764 27 днів тому +13

      It also has a higher chance to hit due to the fighting style, which increases DPR, and can engage before the melee, and target switch more effectively. Not to mention flying targets.
      Ranged may have a lower "stand and hit" DPR, but will almost certainly be more effective on the battlefield than that implies.

    • @Turalisjinarod
      @Turalisjinarod 27 днів тому +10

      Yes, ranged was better at everything before, damage, safety, deployability, positioning. Range by itself is an advantage, it is not worse than melee now, it was just better at everything, but now it loses in the damage department. But all that is before accounting for Magic weapons, with weapons that add damage dice and modifiers, the precision of archery starts to be even more important.

    The thing that makes the Eldritch Knights Action Surge Teleport special, is that it doesn't require an action or anything to activate it, since there's no resource to activate action surge.
    I used this effect in a one shot to avoid falling into a pit on my turn.

    • @limaTheNoob
      @limaTheNoob 27 днів тому +3

      The downside is that you can only use it when you action surge. I find that limitation severely nullifies this feature. I almost never need to teleport AND action surge. Being able to do those things separately would be so much better.
      The most common use case for fighters using action surge is simply attacking again. Then, you're probably already in range, so it does nothing; if you were not in range, a simple misty step would get you there. So, this feature is basically equivalent to one misty step per short rest, which is pretty garbage for a subclass that already gets misty step.
      I honestly consider that a dead level

    • @joshuawilliams8310
      @joshuawilliams8310 27 днів тому +3

      @@limaTheNoob but you’re admitting that this would both free up your bonus action and combine well with attacking more. In cases where you can kill a frontline opponent and get on top of a backline enemy this now gives you a full attack action, and even better if you have GWM you’re kill gives you a weaponized Bonus Action. Alternatively a ranged fighter, which won’t be the most amazing, but still will be viable could use this to make distance when it counts. This isn’t happening in every encounter but when it happens will be way more than a “dead” feature. But if you just don’t want to utilize features have fun I suppose.

    • @limaTheNoob
      @limaTheNoob 27 днів тому

      @@joshuawilliams8310 see, "dead feature" doesn't mean "it will absolutely, never ever come up". People - myself included - use that to mean "a feature whose impact is so incredibly minor that, if you didn't have it, you'd barely notice". That's how I define this feature. It's like... "sure, whatever". If eldritch knights had a proper, impactful feature at this level, we would call this one almost a ribbon.
      It can be useful, but it is so incredibly specific that it definitely is not worth a high level feature. I have used the weapon summoning more often than I'd have used this one - specially because weapon summoning is at will, and this one is once per rest. I'd miss the bonded weapon summoning if it was gone far more than I'd miss this one. That is, in my opinion, a huge problem, because one is a level 3 ribbon feature (the big one is spellcasting), and the other is a level 15 feature that is supposed to represent a significant power scaling.
      Of course, it is still better than the terrible scaling of battle masters (really, die increases are NOT full level features, maneuvers should auto-scale just like cantrips), but that is a very low bar

    Something to note about Evasive Footwork: it can be thought of as a proactive Shield spell alternative. One of the biggest advantages of Eldritch Knight was access to the Shield spell and the massive AC buff that allowed for. Now, Battle Masters can get a similar average AC buff for the cost of a Superiority Die (4 / short rest) + a Bonus Action; this leaves your Battle Master with their Reaction still. With the Protection Fighting Style, both the Battle Master and his brother/ sister-in-arms can both rock impressive ACs on the regular.

    • @TCovenantUnbeliever
      @TCovenantUnbeliever 13 днів тому +2

      And, once a Battle Master hits level 15 (if your campaign goes that far) you can use Evasive Footwork every round for free as long as you're ok using a d8 instead of a d10 or d12. You have to trade your bonus action, but that's a small price to not die. On top of that, since Relentless lets you use a free maneuver once per Turn not just once per round, your reaction Maneuvers can always be used for free. So buff your AC for free with Evasive Footwork, let attackers miss you, and then counter attack for free with Riposte. Or you Parry for free if they still hit you.

    The chances for the Champions defy death feature to work are 27.75 % you seem to have calculated the chances of rolling 17-20 with advantage :)
    The Math:
    You succeed on an 18-20, that is 18,19,20. That is 3 results out of 20 possible. 3/20 = 0.15 = 15 % chance of success for 1 die
    But you get two rolls. You succeed in 3 scenarios:
    - the first die is a success, and the second die is a failure.
    - the first die is a failure and the second die is a success.
    - both are successes.
    But rather than calculate all those scenarios, it is actually easier to calculate your chance of failure.
    There is only one scenario where you fail.
    - both dice are failures.
    The chance of 1 die being a failure 85% = 0.85, the chances for two dice both being failures is then simply 0.85*0.85 = 0.7225 = 72.25%
    And when we know the chance of failure, the chance of success is simply the rest: 100% - 72.25% = 27.75 %
    For whatever reason it seems Chris put the base chance of success on one die in as 4/20, which would end out with 36 %. Honest mistake, happens to the best of us.

    One cool thing about heroic rally is that it triggers at the start of your turn, meaning at the same time as defy death, and since you can order them however you like, you roll a 1 and an 18 on your death save, pop back to 1 hp, then immediately regain those hit points
    At level 19, one level later, once per turn you can regain con hp whenever you regain hp, so let's say you start with a 17 str or dex, and a 16 Con, you use levels 4, 6, 8 general feats to get a +3 str/dex, then use level 12 for resilient wisdom, then use 14 and 16 to just use 2 ASIs to cap your Con at 20, then level 19 epic boon of recovery
    Now if you are not bloodied, you have a +5 bonus to second wind
    If you are bloodied, you regenerate 15hp per turn, and if you are unconsious you have a 1/3 chance of rolling a death save, then coming back at 16 hp, and then you can immediately roll second wind to get another 25.5 avg, and you can immediately move half your speed without opportunity attacks, and take the dodge, attack or dash or whatever, probably attack, then apply sap to whatever is hitting you so they have disadvantage,
    Every turn you don't die again you regain another 15hp
    This makes me want to play a tanky boi so much
    Also, the higher your con is, the more hp you have, the higher your max hp, the more that you survive, which instantly scales all champion abilities since they are resourceless as long as they have health, and also it increased the bloodied threshold, and the amount that epic boon of recovery restores, since you can gain half your hp once when you are knocked out
    If the combat is nearly over when you go down, I wouldn't use epic boon of recovery, I'd just wait for a death save or ally healing, then gradually regen back to half health, then take a short rest
    I love the new champion, the old one always had a nice 18th level feature, but with epic boon of recovery to scale it, (or any other epic boon if you prefer), the new champion has several great build paths which I would like to explore

    I think there are some subtle, but serious problems with the Champion Fighter's level 10 feature, the way the level 10 feature seems to interact with general rules for GM's giving out Heroic inspiration seem to be filled with weird anti-combos...
    For instance, if the Champion player uses their Heroic Inspiration, and then before the start of their next turn does something so cool the GM might want to give them Heroic Inspiration, that is close to net zero benefit for the Champion player, since it could effectively disable their level 10 feature until after the start of their next turn. If the Champion every rolls really well for a round, and does not need to use their Heroic Inspiration before the start of their next turn, they effectively "get punished", losing their level 10 feature for a turn, merely for "getting good rolls" for a round.
    This feels like it could easily have a negative impact on the attitudes at the table. Like if the GM starts to feel there is no point in giving out Heroic Inspiration, and reduce how often they give Heroic Inspiration out, that will effective punish any non-Champion Fighter players. From the player side, if Champion players start to feel that it is not worth it to put in the roleplaying effort that is supposed to be needed to earn Heroic Inspiration via the general rules, since they will get it anyway at the start of their next turn, the feature would be training players to not engage in the very behavior the base rules for Heroic Inspiration are meant to encourage. If a GM starts to compensate any bad habits they fee themselves picking up due to the level 10 Champion feature by giving out Heroic Inspiration more often, they start to undermine the value of the Champion's level 10 feature.
    This feature feels like GM's will find themselves getting stuck between a rock, and a hard place more than they should, through no fault of their own.

    Either way 36% is a strange number.

    29:15 For the % to get up with 1 HP where does the 36% come from? I get less, about 27.75%.
    total possibile rolls with 2D20 are 400 configurations (20 x 20).
    Good rolls are (3x17) configurations for the first good die with a bad second die, (3x17) configurations configurations for the second good die with a bad first die, plus 3x3 configs with both dice good, so that is 111/400 = 27.75 %
    Long time not doing math but the 36% seems off..
    Or we can do (3x20) + (3x20) good configurations but from there we have to avoid double counting the common configurations, so - (3x3)

    For Champion's Defy Death, you said the chance of them popping up is 36%, but I think it's 27.75%. I think you did 1 - 0.8^2 = 36%, but it should be 1 - 0.85^2 = 27.75%, since not rolling 18-20 is a roll of 1-17, or 85% of the rolls. Still solid.

    i thought with the new Equiped/Unequiped rule and the weapon mastery design, the idea behind was "swing the hammer, bringing it down, putting it back behind your back or putting it down the ground to unsheathe and bring down your sword with both hands in the same movement." was doable. But it would make Tactical master useless, doesn't it? why would i replace the property of my 2h mace if i can just switch.
    I love the walking arsenal overall design of the fighter, switching weapons every attacks, but something feels off, in weapon mastery. Seems i misunderstand the rule. and changing after a long rest feels like "i finally mastered my 2h mace, it became the extension of my arm. Oh nevermind, i slept and now i'm more a 2h sword guy"

    Arcane charge could be just simply: "When you start your turn you can teleport up to 30feet to an unoccupied space you can see, if you do so, you must use the attack action om that turn."
    Also would have been great if eldritch strike also affects any saving throw of your on going spells.

    29:00 Unless I missed something, this calculation is off by 1 die face. Should be 3/20 chance per die, right? 18, 19, 20. So 27.75% with advantage. Still amazing!

    Huh... Relentless was something Swords Bard had in 2014, right? "Use a D6 for a Flourish, instead of expending Bardic Inspiration die", or something? It's nice, but I kinda read it as another clue that Swords Bards won't be coming to the 2024 ruleset... :/

  • @SuperSorcerer

    getting an 18-20 on a roll with advantage is only 27.75% and not 36%.
    It would have been 36% if it was 17-20 on advantage, so I can understand the mistake in the calculation, but for 18-20 on advantage it is only 27.75%.
    You can increase the chance even above 36% if you assume you use your free heroic inspiration should you not get 18-20, though it could be risky since you might reroll a success into a failure.

    Can you clarify how you got 36% of coming back to 1 HP from death as a champion fighter? I thought it was 1 - (17/20)^2 *100 = 27.75% chance, because the odds that you brick is 17 out of 20 outcomes on two dice.

    I wonder if the Graze weapon mastery stacks with the Evoker wizard's Potent Cantrip. If so, an Eldritch Knight/Evoker 3 could deal half damage + ability modifier on a missed True Strike.

    15:49 i don't want any one at my table saying they can't do anything on their combat turn
    30:44 ... A 10 hp max regen per turn... At level 18. I don't hate it, but it feels weak.
    31:53 i liked the school restriction since it made sense.
    32:26 War bond... None of the other features do anything with it, which is weird to me.
    War Magic: ..eh. it's alright. Comes two levels after extra attack though so...
    34:45 personally I'd have it work with your bonded weapons only.
    35:18 could put this at 3/7 frankly.
    35:53 improved war magic... I can't think of any level 1 or 2 spells that would be worth the attacks off hand.
    I like Eldritch Knight, but none of the features are really doing it for me. Also, why not call it Arcane Knight sonce you're using the wizard list?
    . Make Eldritch Knight specific spells please WOTC.

    34:45 Sorry, Chris but I really think you missed the boat on this one! I see 3 great uses. 2 you mentioned, but you missed potentially the most powerful.
    1) Weapon attack until you hit then cantrip, as you suggested.
    2) Hit on turn A, cast leveled spell on turn B. You say not enough slots, I say all the more reason to give disadvantage first. But this is also a very slow option.
    3) Hit with an attack and cast a leveled spell on the same round. Lots of ways:
    a) Action Surge (obv, I know)
    b) Attack with a bonus action
    c) Attack with a reaction
    d) Cast with a bonus action
    Foes worthy of expending a (melee or ranged) attack and a save-or-suck spell slot on could be approached in this way with a L10+ Eldritch Knight.

    I don't get why Rally now scales with half your fighter level while Parry still scales with STR or DEX Mod. Rally reduces future damage while Parry reduces inmediate incoming damage, Rally is for allies while Parry is for yourself. Shouldn't Parry also scale with half your fighter level to keep up with Rally ?

    Maybe there is a separate video about the damage of the subclasses, but the Campion Fighter seems too low, particularly for levels 3 through 9.
    For comparison, if a Battle Master Fighter focuses on the Maneuvers that add the Superiority Die to damage after confirming a hit, you can guarantee an average of 18 damage every time you expend your 4 Superiority Dice for levels 3 through 6, so if every 8 encounters/32 rounds of combat if you are getting a short/long rest every 2 encounters, you should be able to get an average of 72 damage out of the Battle Master subclass, if you are getting a Short/Long rest after every encounter, you could be getting up to 144 average damage out of the Battle Master superiority dice every 8 encounters/32 rounds of combat (technically a Maneuver like Precision Attack could boost your damage even higher via turning misses into hits, despite the chance of still missing the attack).
    In comparison, for a Champion Fighter to deal a similar amount of damage from their subclass via critical hits on natural 19's (critical hits from natural 20's don't count towards the subclass's damage), they would need something like a magic weapon with the "Flame Tongue" enchantment (or maybe the "Dragon Slayer" enchantment in a campaign where most/all enemies are dragons) as well as Advantage on most attacks, if not every attack, in order to catch up to the Battle Master damage, discounting any of the non-damaging benefits you could get out your chosen battle Master Maneuvers, like knocking enemies prone with the Tripping Attack maneuver.

    I like theme of eldritch knight but I don't know if he should get 5 out of 5. Very few spellslots, currently cantrip selection is limited, no booming blade or green flame blade in new PHB. Battlemaster can convert bonus action to decent AC through evasive footwork, on 15 level this is almost a perma shield at cost of bonus action instead of a reaction. New fighter looks really good, champion on higher levels should be also amazing as some DMs might allow heroic inspiration to be gained out of combat.

      Limited, but there are a few exemplars. Shillelagh is amazing now. A single bonus action turns your trash club into a one-handed d8 force dealing weapon for 10 rounds, no concentration needed.
      At lv17, you essentially have a one-handed maul that lets you use a shield or dual wield.
