Should Insurance Be Compulsory For Cyclists? No! Here's Why... | GCN Show Ep. 396

  • Cyclists have long been at the centre of a heated debate about whether or not bike riders need to have compulsory insurance and registration plates. Despite a few high profile accidents in the UK in recent months between people on bikes and pedestrians, the risks to other road users presented by bike riders versus motor vehicles is minuscule in comparison. We also have this weeks inspiration, hacks and bodges, and we announce the winner of a 3T Exploro courtesy of Komoot!

      That's what we've got...bike lanes here are shared with pedestrians thus littered with glass shards (some people can't get home without drinking a bottle of beer) and e-scooters. Roads are much cleaner and relatively safe except some selfish motorists assuming they alone in their SUV are more important than me on a bike.

    When riding home from work tired late one night, I cycled into a parked car. Damaged me and the car but the bike was untouched. I left my details and when the car owner started to get ridiculous about the cost of repair I contacted my home insurance company.
    To my delight they said I was covered and I didn’t hear from them or the car owner again.

      If the driver claimed on your home insurance the insurer would pay out if you admitted fault, you need to speak to your insurer (particularly if you want to switch) to find out if there is a claim against you as you'd need to declare it to any new insurer

      Ha! I did that when I was about 12 years old, it was a parked Ford Anglia, not a mark on the bumper, just a rather abrupt stop! I learned a valuable lesson though. Modern cars can be very expensive to repair, a plastic bumper cover replacement will certainly go over £1k for many cars and a smart LED headlight replacement can get close to £1k. I had a drunk kick my NSR door of a Mercedes E-Class whilst I was stopped at some lights about 8 years ago, the repair required a new door which came to £2,400, I had dent master and the like look at it as well, but there was nothing that could be done. The City of London police were 100% excellent, the guy had a good job and was very apologetic (after the office Christmas party!) I said to the police, just get the money from him, don't prosecute him as I have no desire to mess up his career with a criminal conviction and that's exactly what happened. I felt £2,400 and a night in a cell was well enough of a lesson and he was very grateful too. I did not request a hire car as I had another car that I could use, this would have put the bill up considerably and I thought unreasonably.

    When I was first returning to cycling there was a situation where I was side glanced by a car so I decided to get third party insurance then at least I had somebody to fight my corner so I joined British Cycling's ride scheme. Sadly accidents do happen and for the money I really want to protect myself. Back in the eighties the C.T.C. ran an insurance scheme called old for new so you weren't further penalised if you had an accident. On this subject another question for commuters is do you use any form of body armour to give yourself further protection for the elbows and something minimal for the back?

    • @G8YTZ

      The most important think is a hi-vis jacket, cycle lights unlike car lights are invisible at night to the side as they don't wrap round, all cyclists should wear hi-vis ad do many motorcyclists. In addition to lights, I'd support compulsory wearing of hi-vis and helmets as these have major safety benefits.

      @@G8YTZ In principle I agree with your comments in addition to my own. However I believe we cyclists should be disciplined enough to voluntary wear helmets (that are to the higher 'Snell' protection standards) and high-viz in bad light conditions and at night. To prove to motorists who have animosity towards us that we take the higher ground! Also I use a 2" diameter rear view mirror in the handle bar so I can keep and eye on the traffic behind! As my protection is far more important than the Tour de France look!

      @@billmmckelvie5188 Did you consider a rear RADAR? My pet hate with cyclists (and car drivers) is the "boy racers" who take silly risks, for example; using excessive speed and overtaking on the left a vehicle indicating an intention to turn left. As a car driver in London I tend to pull to the kerb to protect these idiots from themselves, these people don't even respect the traffic lights installed on cycle lanes, this and TfL over complicating junctions and decorating the roads with concrete and steel poles and bollards that spoil driver sight lines, there is a good reason in the USA why suspended traffic lights are so common. The worst cyclist incident I ever had was when I was reversing my car into a perpendicular parking space outside some shops, a cyclist decided to cycle at great speed and cut in behind me as I was reversing, how he did not hit me I never understand, surely its just common sense not to do things like that, especially when there was plenty of road space in front of me.

      @@G8YTZ Rear radar LOL😄 Best of British with London I am glad I do not live there and have to travel in the centre in a car or on a cycle. I am just amazed that a lot more people are not injured or killed. In particular I feel sorry for the bus and taxi drivers as you have cyclists who swarm them on both sides. Fortunately where I live usually we cyclists (also I am car driver) are in ones and twos unless we're on a group ride, the interaction between car and cyclist is usually good other than the odd incident.

    • @G8YTZ
      @G8YTZ 3 роки тому

      @@billmmckelvie5188 A friend has the Garmin Varia RADAR, its really good. It is challenging for sure in London, not helped by TfL's terrible cycle lane designs, for goodness sake, why put cycle lanes on main roads, for example, Upper and Lower Tames St. is a pollution trap (worse since it was reduced to one lane) and then the contra flow cycle lane confuses everyone, the worst place for a cyclist to breath, and you have Queen Victoria Street that is wide, pollution free and mostly empty and it runs parallel, or south of the River the whole riverside area extension of the Thames Path, total madness in the design and restricts access to emergency vehicles from the fire station next to Southwark bridge, delaying emergency responders. You could make some super cycle lanes in London and keep the main roads for vehicular traffic, after all we all want the washing machine and others along with our Ocado deliveries to arrive on time and the shops to be stocked and those people are going to have a motorised van!

    In response to question about cyclists having insurance I would like to come up with a semi-related suggestion.
    I would like to have a cycling specific dash cam. The battery life is the main problem, if the ride is less than a couple of hours then it might be easy to find a range of different dash cams you can use.
    However what about rides that are well over 4 hours?
    I would like to have a dash cam that recharges off a dynamo, then you will have no problems with battery life.

    I don't know about the UK but where I live there are people who use bikes because they can't afford a car and all its associated fees and expenses. Laws requiring registration and insurance could leave them with no way to get around.

      Not sure where you live or whats going on there but here in the Netherlands a bicycle is just like walking. people often have more than one bike, nevermind registering or insurance.. you wouldnt need insurance for your shoes either.. thats how it is here.. hard to even get into an accident anyway on a bike lane with curbs next to it.. unless you somehow manage to run into a crossing cyclist.. but youd really have to be drunk to do that

      Lets be honest the perspex is a visual thing.. to be covid proof.. its a bit politcal. • @gcn
      @gcn  4 роки тому

      For sure it's a good idea - if you're 'taken out' by a driver however you should be able to claim the cost of the damage on their insurance if it's the driver that is at fault, this does depend a lot on the country you live in however and it's not always possible to gather adequate evidence to prove liability in these circumstances

  • @TheGreenhillsCyclist

    Ok, admittedly, I was off the bike for 18 years after a serious road traffic accident, however, before that accident, cycling was my only form of transport. My Dad, Lord Rest His Soul, was a car driver. We debated countless times on whether cyclists should be insured. I held & still hold the strong view that on public roads cyclists should be fully insured, fully taxed & licensed, complete with registration plates on their bikes. A cyclist can cause a very serious accident on the road which can cause serious injury & death. On organised road races, I'm thinking maybe not so much. If Ireland were to make it law for cyclists to be insured, taxed, licensed complete with registration plates, I'd be first on the queue. At the moment if a cyclist causes injuries or death, it is almost impossible to track down the cyclist if they make a run for it after the accident.

    • @chinboy66
      @chinboy66 4 роки тому

      Tracy Curtis just out of interest, how many times do you think a cyclist causes serious damage or injury to property or another person? I can literally count on one hand the number of reports of such a thing in my 51 years. So what your proposing is a massive infrastructure cost, one that is virtually impossible to enforce, for what is likely a handful of incidents a year in most countries. There are many reasons governments have rejected this idea for years. Given it is not even compulsory for drivers to be fully insured in most countries I doubt you will have too many people in line with you to cough up their hard earned to fund, what is essentially, a non problem

    • @TheGreenhillsCyclist
      @TheGreenhillsCyclist 4 роки тому

      @@chinboy66 Cars & motorbikes were on the roads for years before it was made law that they be insured, taxed & have registration plates. At that time, there were even less accidents involving these vehicles, about the same number as you claim are caused by cyclists today, yet, the law saw fit to place tax, insurance and registration plates on them. I've seen a lot of accidents caused by cyclists and people being directly hit by cyclists. I've run out of hands to count on. I'm 2 years younger than you & I've seen the true scale of things.

      @@TheGreenhillsCyclist I don't think you are correct. There were 7000 deaths on UK roads in 1930 the year insurance became compulsory. I make that 1500 times the current toll by cyclists. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reported_Road_Casualties_Great_Britain#/media/File:Killed_on_British_Roads.png

    I think registration tied to a LBS maintenance/safety inspection like the car MOT test would be a good idea, not so much a riding license, although that might also be a good idea. We had such a thing for the kids when they were at school. Cycling Proficiency test was it? But I think insurance should be up to you, your loss if you get your bike mangled without it.

    In Japan, more and more prefectures are "strongly recommending" 3rd party cycling insurance for all cyclists, and if you are commuting with bikes to work or school, due to insurance coverage from your workplace or school, it is often mandatory. It is a no brainer for committed cyclists but it does discourage more casual ones to pick up cycling though.

    I've been cycling more or less the same loop for the last year or so, and see the same people time after time. We always nod and wave as we pass and occasionally stop for a chat. That's one of the best things about cycling. I ride a Merida Race Lite 90 and, while it's not the best bike, it's light and fast enough that I can keep up with the carbom whippets. Everybody has been super helpful and friendly.
    But.
    Two days ago I swapped my drop bars out for a flat bar to make my bike a bit more user friendly when cycling through town or if I'm out with my partner, because she rides a mountain bike. I rode the same route as usual, and saw the same faces, and not a single one of them said hello or even acknowledged me at all. One or two even sneered at me when I waved. I am the same person, riding the same bike and wearing the same clothes and helmet, but because I don't ride drop bars anymore does that mean I'm out of the gang? Next time roadies complain about people giving them a hard time and accusing them of snobbery, this is why.

    licensing is a non-starter. Really pro bike insurance though (at least in a UK context), I've been a Laka customer for a couple years now, when my commuter bike got nicked they sorted me out really quickly. I've had some less fulfilling experiences with other insurers in the past though. I had my cockpit stolen (cables clipped, stem undone, frickin thieves) and my previous insurer said that this was 'vandalism' and that wasn't covered. So I would have been less out of pocket if they'd nicked my whole bike. I'd love some content about how to pick an insurer, what to look at when comparing plans, maybe some insurers of note (Second shout out for Laka, they're great!). Keep up the good work!

    I watched the GCN mountain bike video, and in this video hearing Si say about railing the hairpin in Weekly Inspiration got me thinking. Obviously the GMBN crew are faster off road, and the GCN team faster on long road climbs. But who wins a long, fast, twisty road descent? Either all on road bikes or maybe road bike vs mtb. Could be a fun feature for you guys to film.
