I don't get why people are getting so offended by his name. I had a good laugh at it myself. I had to do a double take at first because I first saw his official announcement by Genshin before XianYun. But after I realized that WAS his name, I laughed. I laughed at the memes for it as well.
And yes, I have a cousin named exactly that, "Ga Ming". I'm more surprised that they decided to include Chinese names with the Cantonese regional dialect. Speculations out there says that his introduction will also unveil a new area in Liyue based on the Canton/Southeast China region. I'm kind of stoked about that and can't wait to see how they portray the area if they do!
Also, from another official description of GaMing, it sounds like that he's a lion head dancer, just in time for the Lantern Rite. Lion dancers are usually performed by martial arts schools so I suspect he'll either be a polearm user or a melee catalyst, not unlike Heizou and Wriothesley.

Mihoyo is a Chinese company that targets an international audience. They likely have plenty of folks at their HQ that speak both English and Mandarin. They knew that people would have a laugh with his name, and probably chose it precisely because it could draw up some attention. They're in the business of selling characters. Memes sell characters.

@@konaqua122 I do agree, I don't personally think names (or specific words) should be changed. I personally find it disrespectful if one language changes something when it already as the capabilities to say the actual word. But at the same time, you do still need to make sure foreigners can understand something so they don't end up butchering it even further. Not every word/name is easy to say from one language to another. So, when translating, sometimes translations can be a little off. It just is what it is, no changing that.
Take Japanese to English. Japanese doesn't naturally have the "L", so they substitute it with the "R" sound. And many words used with katakana follow this logic, although they try to stick to the original.
That said, "Gaming" is a little off compared to "Ga Ming" lol Some of Liyue's character names aren't exactly translated well.

Popularity will always bring forth the lunacy and its just sadly this age is late for genshin to not suffer social media fiascos, yet too early for the eventual moment when some government bodies get so fed up with social media degeneracy it eventually results in a couple of apocalypses on the internet that eventually gets people too scared to pull `entitlement degeneracy` anymore.
Hence why i will just stick to my less popular games which are high quality to be fun yet not popular enough to get enough attention for these `hourly` sessions of someone getting offended over something as simple as name pronounciation, spelling, color combinations of outfits, the physical figure of the character just `looks unrealistic` despite it being a fictional game and maaany more excuses they wanna make when it just boils down to this is just how they `play with themselves`, by being a perpetual negative nancy who has to get pissy at something as how they get a `high`.
Anywho, cant wait to see how long it takes for these `controversies` to get so annoying that we end up with Twitter getting shut down and likely the ones that actually have integrity start including additional guidelines for restricting or speedily ban people with agenda shenigans like these.

This is why Hu Tao and Yun Jin are the only ones with a space in their name because their surnames are Hu and Yun respectively. All the other characters are simply referred to by their given names. For example, if Xiangling is referred to by her full name in English, then she would be referred to as Mao Xiangling.
Note that there are other Chinese cultures that may have different transliteration standards like the use of hyphens or space to separate syllables in given names, but using one word for the entire given name is standard transliteration for Mainland China.

I'm not Chinese but I tried doing a bit of research to understand why he's named this way (cmiiw in the replies!)
    1. Why "Gaming" instead of "Ga Ming" or "Ga-Ming"
Spacing the names implies the first name is a surname (like Yun Jin or Hu Tao), and there isn't any precedent for hyphenation afaik?
    2. Why it's "Gaming" instead of "Jiaming"
Jiāmíng" is the standard Mandarin reading of 嘉明 (characters mean "auspicious" and "bright"), and since Genshin's English localization ignores diacritics (which mark tones in Chinese), it would probably be rendered as "Jiaming."
"Gaming" is an intentional choice, as it looks similar to the Cantonese reading of the name (ga(a)1ming4)
This may be alluding to the significance of the lion dance in Guangdong culture, plus the lion motifs on Gaming's design clearly resemble the iconic Southern Lion associated with Chinese new year festivities
    3. Why it's "Gaming" instead of "Gaaming"
Like Ying mentioned in the thread, romanization is super complicated..
The spelling "Gaaming" is based on the more modern Jyutping romanization, while the spelling of "Gaming" that is used here is seemingly based on Yale romanization.
If I had to guess why the Yale romanization is used here, maybe it's because it's more commonly used in the West? Idk. But whether Jyutping or Yale is more effective is a very subjective can of worms I'm not qualified to open lol
But tbh in this case, for SEO purposes I think they should've went with "Gaaming". It makes the intended pronunciation more obvious too lol

This kind of anger over a DAMN FREAKING NAME screams "white savior complex" to me. In fact, anecdotally, as a kid, I went to summer Chinese school with a kid named Ga-Ming. He turned out pretty decent growing up. Seeing this announcement brought me back a ways.

Funny thing is- Writting english names into japanese kanji or chinese text can result in hilarious or even questionable translations.
Japanese kanji have meanings, so certain english names can be weird when read in that text. I imagine it's the same for chinese text too bcuz they are similar systems that use the same characters
Now thinking about it, reminds me how the japanese names for many genshin characters is different, bcuz there may or may not be different meanings in those names that can come across as silly or weird.

I thought it was going to be something where his name sounds/reads like a slur or something but it's literally just "Gaming" like there are bigger problems to be an advocate for.

There's no way to win this. Even if they make it clear how to pronounce this character's name properly, there will still be tons of memes about Charmin' (toilet paper brand)…

Imagine getting offended by a fictional character. How bored and toxic do you have to be to just resort to bad mouthing about a character's design? I may not know much about Gaming, but I think her design is cute. Don't like it? That's fine, just keep it to yourself. Don't drag others down for it.

Already drama. You can't be serious?
Like Gaming is/will be even more hilarious if they pronounce it as such instead of how it's supposed to be said.😂😂😂

Becoming a meme is good for the character's popularity. Imagine his kit is trash like Mika and he is not popular enough, I guarantee people will forget about him.
The funny thing is that people make fun of Wriothesley's name and even listed all types of his nickname in Google doc. If I remember correctly, it's almost 120 nicknames and two of the nickname that I like is "Winnie the Pooh" and "Willy Wonka".
Lastly, I'm asian and I also make fun of his name. It's not offensive at all and it's just Hoyo not put space between Ga and Ming, that's all. In the end, his name will be pronounced correctly in voiced event.
