I love this! Much Needed info and talks. Im a first year artist def still struggling with clientele.. however, im getting better day by day! Thanks for the videos yall.
I agree that the tattoo schools are an INEVITABILITY, but it seems so sad. The tradition of handing down knowledge one-on-one, and learning organically with hands-on experience is so interesting. It feels so impersonal to just pay money, learn on a curriculum, and just leave with a piece of paper. The knowledge that you learn in a shop has so little to do with the act of tattooing. In an apprenticeship, tattooing is only 10% of what you need to learn. That's just my opinion, schools would also help with regulating the industry, but that's also a double edged sword.
In our opinion are definitely pros and cons to both the apprenticeship and the tattoo school model. Everything you said about GOOD apprenticeships is definitely true, but there are so many that are abusive, non-beneficial, and/or exploitive to the artist. We think tattoo schools one day COULD be very helpful to learning how to tattoo, but as of right now, there aren't any that we know of that are there yet.
