I definitely remember this parade. It was my 11th grade year and 1st year as sax section leader. This was when DISCIPLINE was the corner stone of the band. Practice started right after school at 3:15 and did not end until after 6pm Monday-Friday. Many a band stepped up and got blown out. Nobody wanted that work from us. And I mean NOBODY...especially in DC. Shouts out to Cardozo who put DC bands on the map back in the early 80s. Shouts out to THE BLUE AND WHITE MARCHING MACHINE who took the torch, carried and DEFENDED it all the way into the mid-late 90s. Shouts out to Ballou who carried the music into the new millennium and is still doing great things. DG class of 94
YESSSUH!! Eastern band was definitely a force to be reckoned with! My brother Tavares played trumpet, while my other brother and I were over playing in Dunbar's marching band the same year, our house was the place to be for more than sibling rivalry LOL!!! Oh, the wonderful days😊
Tdbl3 who are we? SST! Thats what our trumpet section was called.I played trumpet with your brother. Nobody had better trumpets than Eastern back than. May peace be with you
I am a Ballou Knight c/o 05 and whenever I'm not rooting for Ballou I'll give an occasional hura for EBall...DC band needs to come back to these days because I miss it..idc if it's Ballou, Eball or Dunbar we need to bring music back into the schools
@djustthink - I am from the Cardozo Class of 1981. I marched in the band at Cardozo for four years (one year while in junior high school). I don't recall Eastern actually havving a serious marching band program until my senior year at Cardozo (80-81). We competed against Eastern (among others) that year. Ech time, Eastern, including at the Azalea Festival Parade in Wilmington, NC. Of course, we won 1st place. I don't even know if Eastern placed in the top three.
MrOu83 Eastern didn't have a band in 81 our band program got started in 82 when Robert E Sands came from Woodson Jr from that time on we smoke everything in the city in jazz concert and marching band. Also my cuz played in Cardozo band Raph Williams on tuba with Bruce
@bestfriendx1 I remember when Eastern use to come to Norfolk for the NSU parade. You guys were huge!!! I was in a small band called John Yeates from '85-'90. In '91 the school became Nasemond River High School; the best band in Hampton Roads in the early '90's.
Go Eastern...I'm a Ballou Knight c/o '99 and always a big fan of good marching bands...Eastern use to bring it where ever they went...whether under Mr. Moore or Mr. Ghilcrest...
yea thats true. watson been ther for 14 years and the band JUST got going. the new BD is doing what Watson is doin in 2.5 years. i cant wait till EHS get some size (especially Trumpets!!!). they will shock people.
Y’all fools loud as a mug lol!! I went to Norcom during this time....we were loud but dang! I think I see my man Shaye on that tuba at 3:16....? I marched with a lot of y’all guys and I think we all have a mutual respect....cus we all crunk at NSU
@MrOu83 Yo! dogg Im wit you on that...I am a hughe fan of the Clerk squad I even graduated from Cardozo in 93...and my brother Anthony Washington whose better known as aka nick name Columbo to which was a trumbone player thru the years 80-83 0r 84 I think- anyway the band was of course the best of all DC bands no one could even dare out top them at {ALL} Mr. Gill and his brother were great directors. I remember many fond days of Cardozo's performances..Passadina was great too and Winchester lol
@MrOu83 Actually Eastern always had a good program everyone know Cardozo had there shine because of there infamous "DC Cab" movie appearance which wasn't for that very long and of course the rose bowl parade but I guess if you think eastern didn't have a good program before 80-81 you are sadly mistaken.
Class of 1995 Ballou But Went To Eastern 10th & 11th Grade.. So, I Know Both...I'm Looking For Albert Jackson Knickname Boosha He Went To Eastern & Stayed On Minnesota anyone who's seen or Knows where he's at..Please tell Him his brother has been searching For him...Mike...Thanks All...
This parade made me want to be in this band. I was 13 and was going to Shaw Jr High (the best Jr marching band at the time) in the fall. Learned Sax from Mr Hoover and did 3 years in the marching and concert band. 95 I was in Eastern learning technique from Mr Johnson. Mayne 10 grade was fun asf
what y'all gotta realize is everything is cyclical...eball today may not have the size of 93, 99 or 01 but they still got quality. peeps comparing them to ballou know...c'mon yall watson been at ballou almost 14 years and these young cats been at eball for only 2 1/2 years plus they weren't directors before. alumni need to stop bashing and give back.
true eball. this is the reason i came to eastern(99-01) the last great years. ask doug for some tapes bcuz he has them all. even the tape at greyhound when we raped howard(99')
Eball has always had an Amazing marching band, must give credit when it's due. But Duke and HD put out more musicians. No shade just facts...... McDonald's All Americans? A band program is judged by 3 phrases and 2 of them Eball was average (concert/jazz)........Now some fans with no Fine Arts knowledge will argue to differ, or some even say Marching Band compensated for those short comings.
