Potato: I can’t buy a Mac I can’t afford it
Also potato: owns a red an arri Alexa, 10,000$ tripod
He rents the reds I think
And the camera equipment is actually worth the price unlike a Mac
POTATO got very lucky and got a great deal on a used ALEXA from another indie filmer who took great care of it -- off Craigslist -- for dirt cheap. No idea how the RED came about.
Yeah, the credibility of this guy just went all downhill half way through the video. If he cares so much as to learn Camera specs, why not computer specs? that's literally the other half of cinematography is the PC equipment for editing. if he applied the "it just works" mentality to a computer, He might as well shoot on a go pro if he wants ease of use.
Affordability is tied with the practical value of the item. Those cameras are worth the money, and they are necessary for his income. A $15k Mac Pro isn't necessary at all, especially when there are more powerful alternative PCs at less than half the price
Calling the Pocket 6K a "basic" camera is one of the weirdest statements I've heard in some time
UnknownSpiral it's because of its useless battery ;)
yeh it's a bit weird. i think he's referring to pricetag
You'll regret saying that in around 10 years
Comparing the pocket 6k to arri's, red's and film camera is just a basic for him.
Gene owns an Arri... soooo... yeah, the 6k bmpcc is a basic camera to him ;-)
If you need advice for the gym I’d charge you in equal amounts of questions about camera gear ^^
just seeing this guy and i like him already.... I can't place it, he just seems a genuine fella and explains nicely
As a professional video editor I have worked on a variety of systems, ECS, Ampex, CMX, Calaway, Grass Valley, Avid and Premiere. Hardware was proprietary until Calaway, Avid and others started using PC and Macs. I worked on both sides of the old Mac vs PC debate and am surprised to see it still being talked about. For me it has always been about what hardware would work best with my chosen software.
Recently I had to upgrade from my 10yr old pc, and when looking around the choice was easy. I can buy a lot more current hardware with a pc then Mac. Not that one is better then the other, just a financial fact. I can get to making money more quicker with a pc. In the end I built my own edit system for $2300. If I have to go portable, then my old Dell E6430 which just got the free Win7 to Win10 upgrade, will get me through. Got this laptop for $200 used and for the few times that I need it, it gets the job done.
Moral of the story, pick your edit software, determine what hardware will get the most out of it, then find the OS that will work best. And don't forget you are turning to make money so there is ROI to consider.
You legitimately gained my subscribed at 3:55 min. when you shared the humanizing trait of looking through specs and transparently shared as I feel constantly "don't know what that is, don't know what that is, don't know what that is." Cheers!
Omg i was literally searching for THIS on google yesterday... Thanks dude !
Love the up beat attitude. Great game energy. Keep it up. I am at the very beginning stages of learning all of this. It is so foreign to me. Appreciate how you present your information and knowledge.

you are so fun to watch. that is great! one extra thing in addition to the actual useful content of the video that keeps the viewer engaged!!! amazing video!
Great video! For several years I used a high spec PC workstation running Premiere at work. During that same time I used a MacBook Pro as my main work computer. I frequently edited some projects in FCP on the MBP but mostly just used Premiere on it. I don’t know that I preferred either one. Pretty much depended on the project. At the time I was doing everything in 1080P so while the workstation was faster often the MBP was just easier because I could work on stuff at home or in meetings. Now I am using Premiere on a MBP now for the occasional project but I no longer edit as a work thing. I do work with the occasional event or nonprofit but these are very low pressure so speed isn’t a huge issue. I have played with Luma Fusion on the iPad Pro and could see myself going that direction with my current needs. I am waiting for iPad OS but if that works well for file storage and organization I absolutely will give it a shot. I don’t think platform is important. Use what you like and can afford that will get the job done.
What program are you using to record your audio or is the condenser mic connected to your camera?

Potato Jet, is perhaps the first Asian not to know anything about PC components.
Haha
His first mistake was the title. Macintosh and Windows are both PC's PC stands for Personal Computer. when the first apple computers were announced they were called a Personal Computer. lol Windows vs Mac is the proper term. Mac users ultimately understand money is green. but beyond that the average Mac user is pretty ignorant when it comes to technology. they just know they like technology. lol He also should have mentioned properly the Final Cut Pro now is nothing but a glorified version of iMovie or Windows Movie Maker. its for beginners. where as Premiere is for more advanced users. Final Cut Pro 7 was the last version of Final Cut Pro where they aimed to the professional. then they gave up and aimed for the consumer beginner with FCPX. I stopped watching after the intro it was so bad.
@@DoubleD72 I had to stop it and play it back a couple of times, I thought I misheard him. Premiere isn't legit and final cut is? Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?
hey that's racist !!!! but somehow true
@@DoubleD72 no youngin...PCs referred to MS DOS machines then windows.

Gene: "so again, i don't really know a lot about PCs"
**proceeds to pull out a sheet with specs that would make CERN jealous*
Wonder how the spec sheet of the LHC would look like, if it had normal PC components
CERN and its experiments have hundreds of thousands of CPU cores in a worldwide computing grid that processed at least 115 PB of new data in 2018. We’d like to have a ton of i9-9900Ks, but our current setup is pretty good too!
@@Philip_J The computing centers of the LHC does use normal PC components - just a lot of them!

If I need „straight performance“, I‘ll go to AWS and get the right EC2 instance for a couple of hours. The only downside is, you‘ll need a good internet connection
This was right on time! I'm debating on which to go with
This was my dilemma earlier this year: been using Mac for a decade, but got a gaming PC for Adobe CC work since my MacBook Pro was showing its age. Nowadays, I use my PC for gaming and freelance work and my Mac for email, browsing and AirDrop (can’t live without it lol).
With the new Ryzen chips out and Resolve being, well, free, it's a pretty solid way to get started on a budget. I love my iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad Pro, and MacBook Pro, but for video/photo editing, I prefer Windows. Upgrading my 2600k/1080 Ti/16GB rig to a 3700x/1080 Ti/32GB build soon so I can handle 4k without struggling. lol
Your personality is infectious dude I feel happier for some reason after watching this
Thank you for this video because I was thinking about going to APC. I currently use a Mac and I just migrated over to final cut pro. I cant see myself editing on anything else since my videos are all 4k. But after seeing this, I may try video editing in premier. I was taught that in school but really didnt much care for it.
7:09 man that reaction😂
You just triggered a traumatic flashback when you mentioned Avid. Had to use that in editing class in college and I couldnt figure it out to save my life XD
Lol! Sorry for the PTSD. Avid is all I know. Been using it professionally since the mid 90s when those systems were north of $100k.
Dude! You crack me the hell up! Good stuff!

I love how everyone in this video is talking about Mac Books and there is me with a 6 year old HP laptop running Linux. Personally Id love to be all Linux. Doing anything in windows takes forever in the settings and Mac just locks things down too much but I do all my editing and gaming on Windows (Im a cyber security major so I have some experience with Linux)
with Kdenlive and Proton you have video editing and gaming on linux. Try lutris too!
you can consider for a next video: Backup systems for video & Photo editing. Each time we need more and more space so, maybe you can explain waht do you use for backup workflow (hard drive , SSD ? NAS? cloud? etc) wich is better ?
Very informative and entertaining. Love your style and energy.

Over about 15 years I went from iMovie HD to final cut 7 then X, then to premiere then to avid (briefly) and finally settled with resolve.
Da Vinci is the only way.
PC is clearly better if you gotta balance ya income and expenses on a small/medium budget.
Macs are cool tho. 🤷🏻♂️
Actually if you want to spend some time on it, you can enjoy both world with a hackintosh build, running macos with whatever hardware spec you like, even with amd threadripper CPU, and it's not that hard to do.
My current build took me about 3 weeks to finish (1 week for hardware, 2 weeks to figure out the hackintosh installation and fixing USB ports), it has an 18core i9 cpu, 128G ram and radeon vii gpu, with a ton of ssd + hdd raid configured in zfs. The whole setup is more powerful than any IMac that's available today, and still cheaper.
Even without crazy overclock, my render time for h264 4k 24p is usually less than 40% of the total length of the video with moderate color grading (e.g. for a 10min black magic raw clips, it can finish the rendering in less than 4mins)
would you share your build? im looking at the same thing :P about how much $$ did you spend?
Good info! I had always thought of it as either Mac or PC.
Not only have I used a pager, I also still have one of the first "smaller" cellphones of 1998 and the first one that did basic texts.
This is totally unrelated but could you do a video on picture profiles and whether flat and "fake-log" profiles like CineStyle are worth using on beginner DSLRs with 8 bit video? Some say it crushes the midtones too much and adds noise in the shadows. Others say it gives you more options in color grading. Is ProLost a decent middle ground that allows for more color grading without losing too much color information( since it's basically a modified Neutral PP)?
One more question (I know it's a lot already), any tips for shooting commercials? I made some nice videos according to my manager and she decided to gave me a task to shoot 3 travel commercials to be shown at travel fairs. All I have is agimbal, 200D+ kit lens and a Sigma 30mm 1.4.
Nice review. Similarly I use Mac and PC, I constantly see people comment about the price of Macs compared to PCs, but having looked at upgrading to a new laptop I compared the Razor Blade and MacBook Pro and there similarly priced, plus the MacBook had the new i9 chip, while the Razor had the i7 chip. Am I missing something or are people just entrenched in using their preferred platform?
Super happy we switched our company to PC several years ago. It has been a great choice for us, for many reasons.
Man you are incredible and I love your channel!
Both.
4:13 You know you're a baller when you call a Blackmagic Cinema Camera ”basic”.
Pretty much the same mindset: I've got a custom-built PC tower in the edit suite and a MacBook Pro. (But that Razer you talked about recently has me thinking...) Building your own PC is easier than you'd expect. PC Part Picker will help you spec out a build, then go to a local parts store with your list and find someone that knows what they're talking about. My daughter built one when she was 10. She's 12 now and it is still working great.
OMG i love your videos, thanks for being Potato Jet

I like your home picture of you laying on a dock at lake McDonald. My wife and I spend a lot of time in the park hiking and taking pictures. As usual great entertaining video.
I used mac for about 12 years of my life. When I started getting more serious about video editing and started doing more with colorgrading and effects so on and so forth my mac just wasnt keeping up.
My mac was from 2012 and I had it upgraded as far as it could be upgraded. I started checking into a new mac and base models just didnt offer enough. And then i didn't feel like blowing $4k plus for what I wanted to get.
I spent about $1050 on a pc and I'm super pleased! I'll eventually upgrade the graphics card but currently I spent 1050 on a pc with 16gb ram, 8gb graphics card, 8 core processor, water cooler for the processor, ssd and hhd. Just so much more for my money.
On that note I still use my macbook for recording music lol Logic for life

I'm a Happy Hackintosh Owner, best of both worlds!
Been with Premiere Pro since the beginning of our journey. Sure they have that weird crash and all but for me it is more user-friendly compared to final cut.
My premiere crashes less on mac.
Same here, I've been with premiere pro ever since. The environment in Final cut feels restricting, I feel like theres more that I could acheive with premiere.
Biggest reason for me is I (and anyone collaborating together) have the flexibility to choose the platform I want to work on (could edit a Premiere project with a team that uses both Mac and PCs; you could never do that if your project is FC based). Doesnt matter if FC is better, Apple also shoots themselves in the foot (for me at least), but locking away the ability for me to use their software on "their" hardware (hell, they dont even make their hardware anymore and even the OS is Linux under the covers, yet they still create the inability to use their stuff).
This any many other reasons are why PC's, servers, and windows dominate corporate businesses.
Been on Premiere since year 2000, version 5.5 as I remember it... Before it was "Pro"
Love this video!
You're just the coolest guy on earth, I love seeing that you're all the way UP

My thoughts too.
I've never used a MacBook before but almost made up my mind to buy the new 16 inch MBP.

Another nice video keep it up potato jet!!!
Piece of advise for the command/ctrl shortcuts issue. With corsair keyboards if they support the icue software you can set macros to any single key and make it automatically change depending on the program you're using. So you could create a profile on your pc so that when you run première the ctrl key would be allocated in the same place where you have the command key when you run the mac. Like this it would always be the same key
You and Linus tech should do a collaboration as both of you came out with a video on the same topic on the same day 😱😱

Wicked background music. When I grow up, video editing wise, I wanna be like you. I have a Mac and a budget so will go with Final Cut
Hey Gene! You could use a little program that`s called SharpKeys to switch the function of the CTRL on Windows. I switched from Mac about one week ago but I find it more ergonomic to press CTRL+W/Q/T/whatever the Mac way, I put it like "ALT to CTRL", "Windows to ALT" and "CTRL to Windows".
At first glance it might seem a bit confusing how to use that program but when I was able to use it, you can do so, too!
Oh, and I went from Mac to Windows just because of power. Getting 8GB of VRAM in a MacBook combined with a i9 was just too impossible (or if available it would have been a few bucks more expensive I guess).
"Watch TV while you editing"

Good for 4K with not much Color work. 4k with ANY fusion work, or 6k footage and it tanks. The hype was good but it’s not reality. I ordered my MacBook Pro M1 with 16gb ram on day 1 and it went back on day 7.

So basically the "filmmaker" justifications for keeping his Macbook are for; iMessage, and Airdrop compatibility with his phone.
Got it.
but it helps to make a more well-rounded experience. it's like how and RGB keyboard doesn't make you a better gamer, but it makes the experience of gaming better. airdrop, great filing, top quality hardware, iCloud, apple pay - all of which make the experience of using a mac worth the slightly higher prices to some people (although in some cases like windows branded laptops... macbooks are cheaper.)
@@tylerhanley1409 this isn't a mac vs windows all-out comparison, this video is for justifying equipment and interfaces for filmmaking. I don't see why you had to bomb a ton of irrelevant personal opinions.
No filmmakers (not even UA-camrs even) use iCloud for storage, and what does Apple Pay have to do with this?
"Experience" as you put it, is also subjective. RGB lighting and bold designs may satisfy a gamer, but most consumers find these features unappealing. Just look at your fellow apple fanboys who like minimalist designs, I bet most of them would rather have a small sleek keyboard rather than a chunky one with RGB. You listed some of mac os's features and claim that they factually make a more "well-rounded experience", but that is just bullcrap.
