First time hearing this band. I dig this a lot. Tried listening to their earlier stuff but couldn't really get into it. Hopefully this new album follows the same style as this song.
Joseph, and company.. you guys have quite possibly out done yourselves once more. If this is any indication of how the rest of the album will sound, it'll quickly become an instant classic and will be featured in my daily commute for months to come. Keep up the damn good work!
I’m glad to see Witherfall getting some well deserved attention. I dig this tune and to all the haters commenting showing how smart you are....you’re not.
For sure, man. It doesn’t sound flat, like the later Iced Earth records. Not saying they’re bad by any means, but the production is much flatter and cleaner than older Iced releases. Schaffer did an amazing job on this one.
@@Neonmirrorblack: Yes, I have both previous albums in the limited colored vinyl edition and the fantastic EP. All albums are masterpieces of Progressive Metal; amazing vocals, songs with so much dark atmosphere, absolutly outstanding. I love this band.
I hate to keep repeating myself, but when I listen to the songs off this album there are certain words that come to mind over and over again. Words like masterpiece, epic and future classic are all very appropriate for this album and words like talented, virtuoso and hauntingly melodius vocals are all appropriate when describing the band itself. Also, they're a bunch of "great kids" as my friend Ron likes to say. Thanks guys, thanks for the wonderful music that makes life better! Please, keep it coming!
I’ve never been able to stomach the power metal vocals but for some reason, I can actually get into them on this. So thankful MM is playing with you two.
The vocalist is just unreal. The range, the phrasing, the ability to sing extremely aggressive and beautiful back and forth, the high pitch long runs...I mean, this dude is the spawn of an unholy alliance between God and Satan - put north of Hell and south of heaven to sing his guts out. He delievers and even if King Diamond, Halford, Jeff Scott Soto, Stu Block and Dave Vincent were hired to sing ONE track together, the couldn’t match the diverse voice of Joseph’s. Did I mention it was a great song?
You've apparently not heard of Warrel Dane. Joseph is one of the last remaining "old guard" stylistically, but he's not quite Painkiller era Halford, nor anywhere as inventive as King Diamond. Probably one of the best in terms of metal vocalists who are actually still releasing material though.
@@windrider6124 The neoclassical/speed metal elements remind me more of Helstar (specifically albums like Nosferatu, A Distant Thunder and Vampiro) than they do Stratovarius, I don't really get any Europower vibes from Witherfall's music. Anyway, the song is great, can't wait for the full album.
The first 2 albums had definetely a big "Nevermore,Mercyful Fate/King Diamond (specially the lyrics with all the occult stuff and the videos) meets Yngwie on guitar"-vibe. This here seems to have also some Iced Earth thrown in for good measure. (the guitarist also plays in IE )
@Subverter idk what you have against Stratovarius, but they are far from "shitty." Personal taste aside, there's a reason why they've cemented themselves as one of the best Europower bands of all time.
@jake dreyer is the grandson of the Shrapnel generation!................his playing brings me back to that catalog (Becker, Friedman, Malmsteen, etc.) but with better songs and a crushing band.
Usually I'm not a friend of Metal with a clear voice (I love BM Bands like (the early) Samael, or (the early) Impaled Nazarene, avantgardistic BM like Dornenreich or Stillers Tod, (Depressive/Suicidal) Post Black Metal like Krähenfeld or Ellende or Melodic Death like Tribulation) but this is absolutely OK. Guess I'll have to buy a CD. Jes, I buy CD's. That's because I'm old on the one hand but it's also because I'm Audiophile on the other hand. And unless streaming provides HighRes Sound in (AT LEAST) FLAC (32 Bit) with a Parametric 60 Band Equalizer that I can Setup myself - I'll use (16 Bit) FLAC I have ripped from the CD myself in my Neutron Music Player.
Isn't that redundant? Demons and Wizards already used that many vocal tracks and effects due to Hansi. But besides that, you're pretty close. Their previous albums were like Symphony X meets Nevermore and King Diamond (due to the leadwork and themes).
@@Neonmirrorblack That's the point - it's so many layers of singing that it's like overdubbing an overdub. Is this because Iced Earth leader worked on this album? I can't understand why anyone would consciously hide JM under vocal effects. I mean yeah this band's prior two were the best answer to lack of Nevermore in over 10 years - and I will still buy this one I'm sure, but I hope the rest of the tracks don't have the vocal filtered through 8 overdubs and mic'd inside a tool shed. He doesn't need that. I also hope for diminished and off-tempo licks and less iced earth chugging. Yeah the artwork is great too, I bought all of the tshirts a couple of years ago.
@@MultiPoseur Likely, and it doesn't sound good to me at all. Witherfall had a bit more of their own style (even if it resembled Nevermore somewhat) with their previous two albums, moreso than they do here. Now it just sounds like Schaffer meddling turned them into Iced Earth redux. Jake has been playing in both bands, so no doubt playing the same boring post 2001 IE songs had an influence on him as well, but this is a bit much, and I hope this song is an outlier. Even the mix sounds flatter. I don't know why they thought there was anything that needed "fixing" with their previous two albums in that regard, but it just sounds very compressed here.
Ugh. The last thing this band needed was any influence of Jon Schaffer. I was actually hoping that Jake would be the one to do the influencing (of Iced Earth). Iced Earth put out some real bangers from 1990 - 2001, but Schaffer has been too self-indulgent and repetitive since. This sounds way too much like Tim Owens era Iced Earth than it does Witherfall... Hopefully this song is not indicative of their new change of direction, because their previously two albums were phenomenal, and now they sound pretty "OK" with this song, and dare I say more generic. Virtuous playing doesn't really matter if it's not interesting.
Let's hope every chorus doesn't get the 10x overdub happy group of vikings chant effect like the last 3 Iced Earth releases. Stu Block another amazing singer buried underneath effects, that I'm sure had no say in it. Hoping the rest of the album doesn't give Joseph Michael the same treatment. He does not need any "help" with the vocals.
ABSOLUTE BANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best songs i`ve heard in a very long time. The new album will be a blast. Witherfall never fail..
This song was released in 2020 but the album was released in 2021 therefore i want to say this riff is my favourite riff of 2021
This band rips! They just keep getting better. And Jake Dreyer is a sick guitar player!
This whole album is a masterpiece

American HM at his best! Witherfall rules!
This is the pure essence of heavy metal! Randomly clicked thinking it was some melodic black metal, pleasently surprised!!!
Must have been the Kristian Wahlin artwork!
Sounds fantastic can’t wait for the new album

Wow! A great song, with amazing powerful vocals, and an aggressive song with speed parts and crazy breaks.

Those guitar licks ! 😍🤘🤘
Very nice. Sounds like Yngwie Malmsteen playing thrash with a humbucker!

WOW!! Blown away!
First that comes to mind; Iced Earth rocks out with Stratovarius 🤟
I'd say they're closer to a cross between Nevermore, Control Denied and Helstar than Iced Earth if you're talking USPM bands
Yes I definetly hear Nevermore. To me it's the speed and power of old Strato combined with the intensity and aggresion of Iced Earth.
