Rex managed to mumble-pronounce Caperdonich differently every single time he said it. That's actually quite a talent. He should put out a Mumble Rap album. His rap name could be T-Wrecks.
My first experience of good single malt scotch and old friend is definitely Oban. At my first week in Aberdeen university, I made friends with some PhD students who obviously just got some research money. Got invited to a very old pub in the town centre. In the basement, we sat in the most comfortable wingback chairs placed around a lovely, warm fireplace, and they gave me (or I mooched) multiple doubles of straight Island goodness. I had only had Jack and Coke up to that point so those salty drams were a revelation, opening me up to the world of whiskey. Whenever it’s been a really hard day at work, I have a generous pour of Oban to remember the good times.
Glen Grant 2. Still affordable for a closed distillery. When I was with you in 2019 Total Wine had Lochan Caperdonich 23yo for buttons... about $70 I think. Incredible. (Could it have been Specs?). I hope Josh Golladay still has one tucked away for me.
@@TheEnglishRedneck45 yep, Caperdonich was set up as, and occasionally referred to as, Glen Grant 2. Most of the stock is pretty mature now and has aged nicely, the peated campaigns they ran -like this one - add more interest. Since they’re not as fashionable as some other closed distilleries the prices are still in check, at least today. Caperdonich will never be reopened on the same site. It was demolished. Cheers English 🥃
Old friend whiskey? My whiskey journey started with Bear Wallow Distillery a few years ago, and there's a very definitive grain note that takes me right back there. My wife and I honeymooned in Nashville, IN where they are and go back every year. Nosing any of their whiskies takes me back there in early August, a whiskey in hand, in a cabin with my wife and greyhounds. It will always be an old friend to me.
I will be starting my dry week on saturday as I'm going to be stopping by the fang and feather on Friday and would like to taste some of their product.
I want to try this but at £115 in the UK at the whisky exchange I'll have to wait a while. Love peat. You made me so oooo envious with this bottle. I want you jobs!!!!!!
Love the channel guys. I have only recently begun my whisky journey. Getting right into single-malt scotch. Have always been a bourbon and coke drinker (thats pretty standard here in Aus). After watching this channel I even have more appreciation for the bourbon I have been masking with coke all these years. You have even got me drinking my "house bourbon" neat now.
Redbreast 15 brings back memories of camping on a beach with two good friends. We drank RB 15 and listened to damn good music with the crashing waves in the background. A great time.
Oban 14 - used to work in a restaurant/bar and was allowed one "shift drink" after clocking out. Had a pour of it over ice (way back before I knew better, but still enjoyable) sitting out on the patio and taking my time with it, rather than just the usual quick wine or easy margarita that I would go to. Have been wanting it ever since, but the price had been keeping me away from it until I found it the other day at Total Wine for about $53. And it was my birthday. My favorite so far. Love the caramel and butterscotch on the nose and palate as well as the smokiness/peat at the end. Just right. And, on my second dram I got a very nice milk chocolate finish. Would love to know if anyone can point me to something similar. Cheers!
The Whisky Exchange rocks! I've had the great privilege to shop both their stores in London. They carry some great whiskies, some of which they finish themselves.
My father in law is my go to drinking bud, and he's got a particular way of mooching, every now and then he'll bring me a bottle to help refill my shelf, but they are always a budget bottle ie Jameson or what not...when he visits though he's not pouring from the budgets, he's always reaching for my good stuff and his go to is Westward Single Malt - He's a coffee nut and if ever there was a whiskey made for someone this one was made for him. When ever I see that bottle or take a pour I always think of him.
Canadian Rich & Rare. It’s what my parents drank with Pepsi or Diet Pepsi. Got to sneak a sip when I played bartender for them. P. S. - The Daniel/Viggo portrait peeking out from behind the table creeped me out for a second.
Lagavulin 16 is my Old Friend. Brought me to whiskey and also created the "Aha!" moment for a number of friends whom i convinced to try whiskey as well. Its like a warm blanket on a cold saturday morning.
The moment Rex said "Johnnie Walker Black", I happened to be pouring Johnnie Walker Black. But I got that "old friend flavor" from the Johnnie Walker Red I was pouring earlier this week - the first whiskey I ever enjoyed, the first whiskey I could drink neat, and it made its presence obvious through the ginger beer I first mixed it with. As a scotch for mixing, it definitely has that "old friend flavor" on first taste. (...Sounds kind of like a Japanese or Korean phrase)
I’m already about 5 years into whisky, when will I grow out of my peat phase? I still seem to be always grabbing my peated whiskies over everything else no matter how much I try to explore
The whisky exchange have an amazing shop in great portland Street, London. If you've never been, I'd highly recommend. It's like an old library of alcohol. They also have exclusives too
Chivas Regal for me. It was the first whisky I drank and it was with my father. It’s his favorite go to whisky so it’s our go to whisky even though I prefer bourbon.
You guys should do videos of boilermaker pairings (like I don’t pour the whiskey in the beer, I pair them together. Also I think craft tea and whiskey pairs surprisingly well.
perhaps could you shine a light on how the whisky export is affected by brexit because if i look at the online shops website there are a lot more sold out labels then i was used to and i mean a LOT more

Glen Grand owned Caperdonich because it was a usual thing to own at leas two Distilleries that are able to produce the same amount. So if one might burn down , you could switch to the second to Cover a Part of the loss. Both were then owned by the chivas brothers. But after it was sold to pernot ricard ( as long as i remeber )and closed in 2001 again it was deconstructed brick by brick in 2011. So Caperdonich will never reopen again.
You will be able to convert the corn fyi. You basically just gelatinized the starches. May be a bit toasty almost burnt flavors from the kernel burning when popped. Some one on home distiller did this exact thing

Caperdonich at £115 is it better than ocromore? At that price which should I buy??? I'm a peat freak. Like lagavulin 16 and Highland Park and port Charlotte 10 etc
I'm a bit surprised they didn't compare this to the easily accessible peated Speyside they've reviewed before, Benromach. I'll bet it's very similar to this.
Senators club whiskey. It’s a budget Canadian whiskey, about $12 for a 750ml. It’s truly a terrible whiskey, but I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t had some great memories in its presence!
Would you guys be able to recommend anything else with a similar flavor profile to the Caperdonich 18yr Peated? Unfortunately it's the only whiskey that my wife likes, and I have only found so many of these going around :(

For the "will it distill", you need to do a Paw Paw fruit, aka the Indiana Banana. That way you have one exotic (the durian) and one domestic fruit.
Monkey Shoulder has a soft spot for me. Always need a bottle on my shelf.

Well I would totally do that dry... but 03. March is the bulgarian "04 July" I am a bit of a patriot. Is it okay to go 5 to 14?
