  • Once we know how to divide, we must learn about fractions, because not all divisions will lead to whole number quotients. But there are proper fractions, improper fractions, mixed numbers... what are all these things? Just check this out!

    I do not know the average age of the people who watch this series, but if I had to assume, I would say they're probably a lot younger than me. I am 21, a CS major with an associate degree. I never struggled with math until high school. Math was very tough, and I decided to sleep rather than to attend my final test which resulted in me failing math.
    I do not regret any of my decisions, I know that now I am a young adult watching a UA-cam video about improper fractions and mixed numbers, and to some individuals that's perhaps pathetic, but I realized I could never excel at this field if I do not start from the very basics. I created a learning schedule with a deadline and everything and I decided to include this series into my schedule. It has been pretty useful. English is not my first language, and hearing some of these terms was insightful.

    4:33 I can see saying 6/8 leaves us with two slices left over, but how does reducing that to 3/4 still mean you have two left over? Wouldn't that be 1 left over? Does it just mean the one slice is a big as the previous two slices put together? So it's essentially the same because the proportions are equal?
    We would still say 1 slice is left over though. Is it a good idea to reduce the fraction when the original equation is dealing with x/8 slices? When the chef is used to 8ths wont he be confused by 3/4?

    The top number or left number is a dividend
    The bottom number or right number is a divisor and the end product is a qoutenent
    When the divisor is bigger then the dividend we get a fraction
    2/8 can reduce to 1/4ths
    If 2 fractions have the same denominator it is easy to see which one is greater
    If the dividend is the same on both but the divisior is bigger on one tje one with the bigger divisor is the smaller number

      That's why we're here! I was left behind at school with math, even though I actually liked it. I wish I could have been able to pause and rewind. This is why group learning doesn't benefit everyone when we learn at different rates.

    This series has been very helpful! I'm learning math now since I never got a real education. I've been studying physics and am kind of decent at that, so now I just need to know some math. 😊

    1:06 im a little bit confused here, right it says 1/8 right? then that means should only be 7 slices of pizza there but it shows all 8 slices because when he showed 2/8 of the pizza it removed two slices but earlier at 1/8 none were removed.

    • @hardarm98
      @hardarm98 Рік тому

      yeah, theres a bit of visual ambiguity going on with these animations. the arrow is basically pointing towards a single slice. a slice is 1/8s of the pizza. then when he says "if you eat two slices of pizza", the two slices are then removed. because you ate them. those slices are 2/8s of the pizza. i hope it's clear

    There should be a plus sign in mixed numbers?

    • @Ajyia
      @Ajyia 10 місяців тому +1

      Keep in mind that I'm not a mathematician, but as far as I know, mixed numbers can be represented with or without the plus sign, both versions are valid. Representing a number as 1 1/2 mainly helps with "remembering" that the number is meant to represent one thing, and not two things as 1 + 1/2 would suggest.
      But you also have to be careful when using the + in a calculation. 2 1/2 * 2 equals 5, but if you write 2 + 1/2 * 2, you have to do the multiplication first and would end up with 4. So you'd have to represent it as (2 + 1/2) * 2.
