- Remember this little technique from elementary school? I'm sure you hated it then, but now you can handle it! It's actually a remarkably elegant technique, and we can even use it to get quotients with tons of decimal places, so it's particularly effective as well. Refresh your memory or learn it for the first time! It's tons of fun.

Whoopsie! The last question in the checking comprehension section has a typo, it's 145 r4, not 154 r4. Sorry!
Man! That had me scratching my head 🤣😂🤣
OMG, I was questioning myself like crazy!!
This threw me off big time😄
Sweet. I was like dang I screwed up lol
reeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I didn't pay much attention in grade 6 to grade 9th in mathematics or anything related to solving maths so this is a great re-introduction to everything I could possibly have missed out
I learned this in 1st
At school
But now I’m in 4th
After 04:57 *1309/9* *Is 145.4 not 154*
Noticed that too. I thought that I got it wrong at first
Its... kinda embarrasing; im in my mid 30s, allways considered myself to be kinda okay-ish in math, yet; here I am, struggling with a piece of paper and basic long division. Its not like I dont get it done, but the amount of time it took me is nothing to write home about
how did you pass your 10th exam
@@boldecor4696 I did not have one. I finished school after 9th class and started vocational School for electrical engineers as 10th and 11th class. Also, calculators where allowed from 7th grade onward if you did pass a test to show that you do know your basic math. Tho, Im from germany and the school system here is quite different from the US I guess. Also my Schooltime is >20 years behind me.
@@psymcdad8151 glad you are in Germany here in India it's totally different don't ever recommend to study in India for anyone here we have to be perfect in math from 9th standard means 15 years parents don't give a fuck about other subjects and teachers too 😭 and no calculators will be allowed in school INDIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM SUCKS
@@psymcdad8151 if you are interested in gaining knowledge of Indian education system check in UA-cam
@@boldecor4696 WOW... this sounds pretty hardcore. Lots of tallented people droping out due to not being good at mental arithmetics, but those who "get it" are top notch. I dont think I could get a halfway decent graduration under these circumstances
This series so far makes me nostalgic. I can't remember when or how I learned these concepts in elementary school. I really like that this series is starting from the very beginning (although the very beginning could be considered the philosophy of math 😝)
Me to 😆

Could you repeat that please?
Hey the last problem is wrong will you please flip the 154 to 145 r4 :)
Spent like 10 minutes on that one in my head, and kept getting 4 instead of 5 until i did it on paper and then checked google.
hey thanks for this. I kept getting 145r4 every time I did it and was like "Am I doing something wrong or did Dave just mix up the numbers?"
He said that in the pinned comment.
Thank you! Your lessons are the most understandable I've seen! I am truly grateful.
Im 18, and always sucked at division of bigger numbers, multiplication, is super easy, could ask me anything and il answer within 30 seconds. and algebra was really easy for me too, finshed alg with a 94 in high school. gotta take my asvab tmmr, and this was a big help to get ready for the big division problems
I’m taking the asvab in a month bc I didn’t pass it twice I just realy suck at math man😭
I’m only 9 years old and you guys don’t understand
Hi! Dave you made an error when you divided 1309/9 you got 154 r4 and I got 145 r4 by the way your videos has been really helpful thanks..
its true right?
I've doing doing this problem repeatedly trying to figure out where I went wrong lol. Glad you caught it too.
i was going insane
bro I was legit checking my answers multiple times and even used a calculator to confirm. Thought I was going insane.
Dave has already mentioned it's a typo and the answer is 145 r4
I remember “learning” this in 4th or 5th grade and I just could not for the life of me figure it out. Kind of embarrassing now as an adult that I still don’t know hot to do long division, I figured it out just enough to skate by that portion of math and then anything I knew completely left my brain lol I am determined to figure it out now!! Thank you :)
If only I had a teacher like you when I was young...
Those tutorials are great!!
I'm from Asia and this process is way more complicated than how we do it here
Im from the Balkans and we too have a way simpler way
in brazil we do it like this ua-cam.com/video/vgZT_VeCSzk/v-deo.html .. and in asia?
I always wondered why in Australia I got taught this form of Division and in South America a much much much simpler way not sing the ⟌ symbol but the one that's up side down. The process is more or less the same but it's way quicker. My question: Are there names for these different types of long division?
omg there’s another way??? aussie here, i got taught the long division that you described takes longer to do 😭
Thanks a million - I always struggled with this and you made it simple to understand!
I NEVER understood this…. Nearly failed every grade and dropped out after sophomore year cause I became a mom. I’m not getting my GED starting next week. And the way you explained it, I feel emotional, being able to grasp and understand it now at 28 😭
You have a good and simple way of explaining Professor :)
And thank you for not skipping on explaining how to calculate the REMAINDER! I was scared that you would just leave it like that!
I actually encountered the remainder concept for the 1st time while starting learning C programming language and didn't understand then what it was. This clarified the concept of the remainder :D

a) how many times can 3 fit into 6? 2 times, write down 2. subtract 6 from 6, 0 is left.

Dear proffessor dave,
Hi my name is Harriett
Here are some fun facts about me, I have two sisters. One of my sister is younger than me and the other is older by two years. I do dance on tuesday, wednesday, thursday and saturday.
At school I enjoy sport and art because when i’m in my sport lesson i have a lot o fun playing the games and doing the exercises, I like when it’s someone’s birthday and they bring in food for me to eat, I also like having fun with our class. But it’s also important to get work done, I think it’s important to have a good relationship with my teacher. My favorite food is chicken sandwich it’s amazing. I’m really bad at maths so I want to learn more maths because i’m SO bad.
My favourite animal is a dog, I have a dog his name is romeo he is turning six this year.
I like to play fortnite it’s the best game in the whole wide world and lastly i’m a year six
That’s a little bit about me, thanks for listening
From Harriett
Thank you for introducing yourself, Harriett
but why you introduce your self i can't understand that what the meaning behind this does it make's some sense in this video comment 🤔🤔😕😕🤨
i was INCAPABLE of doing this in middle and highschool... Thanks a lot for these videos!
Useful.
So excited to learn with you sir
You don’t understand how much this helped like seriously
Learned no math in school, at all and no teachers even made an effort. Now I'm learning to get my GED and go into machining, welding and carpentry to try and make something of myself but whew this is throwing me for a loop, Think I'm finally getting it though, I got a little confused on 6/85 but turns out you just do 6/8 to get 1 on top then 6x1 and drop that 6, 6-8 you get 2 and drop the 5, 6 goes into 25 4 times (24) so a 4 goes at the top, 25-24 is 1 giving the r1.
Same. Wish I had tried harder, but here I am. At least we've got a chronological playlist of everything we missed.
The correct answer to #4 of checking comprehension is 145 r 4... please double-check, thanks! But I do love your lessons...
This traditional skill taught in primary school is forgotten by many.
True,so true
hello i finding this pretty helpful but after we have to do the questions you show the answers which is good but you don't show the working out of the answer . this could be useful to see where we might have gone wrong
Thank you so much! I almost forgot how to do these equations after a while of not doing math- but thanks to you, I completely remember! I owe you one bro :]
Best math teacher put there. I actually learned for one
First time I've done this for 45 years. Still remember the trauma and my mum's/teachers' exasperation. Got it this time, I think.
Thank u for the amazing vid professor Dave!
watching this made me realise I had completely forgotten about this since I only used it once in primary school before switching to calculator in middle school and onwards
*My braincells is dead…*
Same
Dave, you got the last answer in the checking comprehension wrong, 1309/9 is 145 not 154
grrrr stupid typos! thanks for catching that. i wish there was a way to change things once uploaded.
Hey Professor, try using an annotation. This kinda confused me until I saw the comments.
youtube no longer offers annotations! the best i can do is put a note in the clip description, which i have done.
Does that mean that for instance, 29 r 3 in 119/4 means 119 + 3/4?
I like what you did can you do more
check out my mathematics playlist for 100+ more math tutorials.
Watching this so that i can explain this to a 4th grade student of mine. This helps a lot
this lesson was the first shock that made us recognize that math isn't just counting apples and oranges and fingers.😂😂
I think euclidian division is far more easy, and it works with ridiculous numbers, why there is a method for dividing big numbers if the method that we learn (euclidian division) works the same too?
Man I wish you could explain the ending question's answers I suck at math and can't figure out how you got some of the answers.
Not your fault. I'm revising, and don't even know what he's talking about in this video. He's teaching like you already know what it is.
Thank you you better explanation then my teacher taught me
When we divide 406by 8 we use 0 to complete division and make 2 digit
But when we 32/9 we. Stop at remainder 5 plz explain
Why do people dislike this it’s so helpful
Professor Dave,I still don’t understand for example when u substract a three digit number with a two digit number and the answer is a two digit number so should I put the answer or I did it wrong
put the answer
Great work young man thank you
It's actually impressive how long I didn't understand this
0:34 Sr Dave! 208!
i did it mentally
Thanks for you ❤❤❤
Thank you
Can you please explain 564/8 = 70.5 step by step
Very useful I rate this 5 stars
Truly greatful♥
Thank you so much
Very good sir
mathantics didnt teach me anything, this did
thanks
You’re soooo smart,mr Dave
Professor in checking comprehension part the forth one equals 145 with 4 reminder
Thank you❤
thank you sooooo much man
Thank you sir aapke badi se major division a Gaya
Man, it's been 50+ years since I learned this, and I had completely forgotten that we use remainders (r). I'm so used to just hammering it down into decimals. I've even forgotten what use calc'ing it out to a remainder would be?
I've been away from school for 10ys and need to take a Wonderlic SLE exam for entry to the school. I took a practice test and got this question that pretty much asked "what is 56/32". At the end the answer showed me that it was 1.75 but it didn't show me how it got it. I tried doing it on my own and for the life of me I couldn't get that number. Please help.
It must sound like I'm trolling but trust me I'm not. I use to think I was good at math and that only fractions were my downfall. But this simple question has me burried.
Well, just start simplifying. 28/16, 14/8, 7/4. You should be able to get the decimal from there.
@@ProfessorDaveExplains I saw it the moment I read the equations getting simplified. Thanks, that helped.
ive seen a video about an easy method to divide and multiply numbers
you had to convert them to binary first
but i dont remember how it was done exactly and i cannot find the vid anymore
maybe a topic for one of your vids :)
Thank you so much😊
Thanks
This helped alot thx
Thank yoouuu I've learned alotttt
