Gibson vs Epiphone J-45

  • A duel between two quality guitars, separated by $2,200.00 USD in price. The Gibson 1950's J-45 & and the Epiphone Inspired by Gibson J-45. Make no mistake folks, Epiphone is just not another pretty face these days. I'd like to thank a subscriber to the channel that suggested I do this, who calls their channel endoffate. It's primarily a metal channel. I'd say he's quite a musician. I'll drop a link to it below. They asked me if I'd also include the Epiphone IBG Hummingbird, but I thought it might go way too long, so what I'll do at some point is a video that features both the Gibson J-45 against the Epiphone IBG Hummingbird.

    Let me know what you think.
    Update: These IBGs, as of 2023, are now being manufactured in China. Buyer beware. My recommendation is to find a used one with the factory code 23, which is the old Samick factory in Indonesia.

    I bought an Epiphone J-45 recently and I love it. I was expecting to buy something more expensive but when I went into the acoustic guitar room at my local music shop that was the one that spoke to me the most. I'm glad I played them because it saved me a bunch of money! Thanks for all you do, Randy! I haven't taken the pick guard off yet but I did swap the bridge pins for bone the other day. Great guitar!

    I’ve enjoy listening to you play and review the different makes of guitars and giving your honest opinion on them. I especially enjoyed this review because I bought a used IBG Epiphone J45 just yesterday. The original owner also had the pick guard removed and it sounds so good to my ears.

    Great demo. I have the IBG J-45 and I’m amazed how much more articulate the Epi sounds. BTW - I used to own a Mossman Winter Wheat 6 and 12, but the necks warped after sitting in Baldwin’s warehouse without humidity and temperature controls. I should’ve kept them and has the necks reset. Wonderful sounding and beautifully-made guitars. Can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds.

      Hi Mark, I think you made a great choice. This little beast has restored a little faith in Gibson’s future for Epiphone, in my opinion. It has so many things going for it, not the least of which is the attention to detail coming out of the their Masterbilt shop. The IBG lineup on the acoustic side is impressive. Awesome! Wow, this was a surprising contest... as I feel myself leaning towards the Epi?! Didn't expect that, maybe I was a little more impressed with it's brighter tone. A lot warmer and fuller from the Gibson. If I was playing I think I would feel that resonance a little more with the Gibson. Just had a pause and re-listen... The more I listen through I might now lean more towards the Gibson (around 16mins in now). Conclusion - both are awesome!:)

    • @randysrhythm
      @randysrhythm  Рік тому +1

      Hi Choey, yes sir, it’s a bit crazy to me. They are each in their own space, which makes this a bit difficult. If they were worthy competitors to each other, it would mean that the Epi would be closer in tone to the Gibson, at which point everyone could make an easier decision. However, they don’t even remotely sound alike (to me) and that means they bring something different to the table. I can tell you that I am beyond pleased that I have both of them. Thanks for the kind words and the analysis, brother man 👍🏻

    This is a super well put together video Randy , theres no doubt unless your deff that the epiphone IBG j45 is an absolute fantastic guitar for the money! I have the j45 IBG and the hummingbird IBG (Indonesian models) and love them , however i find myself sitting here listening to this and for me the Gibson is fuller , one thing for sure is i will not part with my epiphone i paid €720 (bran new) for it here in Ireland and i love it ! Really enjoyed this video looking forward to many more brother 💪🤘🍺

    • @randysrhythm
      @randysrhythm  6 місяців тому +2

      Hi Gavin, I completely agree on all fronts. The Gibson is fuller, but the Epiphone is a dadgum cannon. I don’t think anyone could talk me into selling my IBGs, or my Excellente. These guitars are game changers, in my opinion. The Hummingbird is sweeter and has more balance than the 45 Epi, but both are just killer guitars for the money. I’ve got a lot of close friends in Ireland, so it’s always great to hear from folks over there, including your good self, my friend. I really appreciate the kind words and I’m sure we’ll stay in touch.

    Nice comparison! I love your channel by the way I’ve been watching you for a while.
    My first “good” acoustic guitar, was the Epiphone inspired by Gibson hummingbird, and that thing was really good for the price point.
    genuinely was a really good acoustic guitar. I got rid of it and bought a Martin D-16, sold it because I didn’t like the Rosewood sound as much and then bought my dream guitar, A Martin D-18! The Marin is in a different league, but it should be obviously because of the price point, and I think that Epiphone really killed it with their inspired by Gibson line.
    Can’t go wrong with one of them! Fantastic guitars.

    Well done sir. The Epi's are certainly gaining some ground. A friend just bought an IBG Epi J-200 and I was shocked at how good it sounds. It is an amazing guitar. I played the same model recently in the store and it wasn't nearly as good though. I ended up coming home that day with a new Gibson j-45 that is quickly becoming my new favorite. I've probably played half a dozen or so new j-45's over the last couple months and although most were good, none could compare to the one I bought. At least not to my ears.

      Thank you, Brian. Yes sir, I believe we share the same opinion here. These IBGs have surprised both of us, apparently. I’m not sure I’ll find another Gibson 45 that sounds as good as my original one, but that just means I’ll have to keep looking, right? This Gibson is beginning to open up and sound pretty good. The IBG 45 is just a killer little guitar. It is not as deep, from a measurement standpoint, as the Gibson, perhaps by a half inch or so, but it is nonetheless powerful. Hi Randy,Don here from Hamilton NZ on my Wife's tablet-SUSAN, what an interesting video, may I share my experiences with acoustic guitar's Iv'e owned, in my time I owned a Gibson Hummingbird & another Gibson cutaway which we're great UNTILL my Son played his new acoustic He'd just brought from aliexpress ( Chinese built) WoW his guitar just Blew me away, twice the volume of the Gibson's & sounded Quality, no question, so when I took the strings of ALL of them I found the answer, the bracings of the Gibson's simply were Over built- which absorb's the volume rather than helps release volume, that's only reason I concluded- the Chinese Acoustic's were awesome, so I sold my Gibson's an put the money in the Bank 😂

    Great review as always Randy. When I bought my IBG J45, I had a chance to play both side by side. (And there's quite the story behind that). To me, the Gibson edged the Epiphone by a hair, as I think it did in this video, but no where near the $3k difference. (Canadian dollars). You made a great point saying these are really two different guitars, both having merits of their own. My Epiphone J-45 is the Slash model, and although most of the differences are cosmetic, there are some that are build. Like a more rounded C shape neck, Grover tuners, Baggs system, and a Tusq nut, saddle, and Pins. There is about $350 CAD difference for the Slash model, but it comes with an Epiphone hard shell case, so well worth it. Right now, my IBG J45 is played just as much as my 47-year-old Gibson Hummingbird, and my 25 year old Gibson SJ-200. Keep up the reviews. P.S. I did a UA-cam video with my Excellente a few weeks back. It's my other Epiphone "I still can't believe what there doing." Guitar.

    • @randysrhythm
      @randysrhythm  Рік тому

      Hi Terry, all great points. The Slash has a 16” radius fretboard, so there’s some difference there, as you surely know. I’ve got 3 guitars with a 16” radius and they really presented me with some challenges at first. It took a few weeks for me to understand and appreciate that design. That said, they are killer fingerstyle guitars. Based on what you have told me here, I may pick that one up. I really appreciate you taking the time to lay your thoughts out. I know others will appreciate it as well. By the way, I love a good story, should you decide to share it, brother man 👍🏻

    Fantastic comparison between the Gibson and Epiphone, I really don't hear a 2 grand difference between them they both have wonderful qualities, I think very much depending on what style you are playing either guitar has its own merits, for instance when you played windy and warm I thought the Gibson came out tops but the Epi was better for the Zeppelin, Slash strumming parts, anyway very well done Randy 🎸🎸👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻

      Hi Tommy, the ones I own are made in the old Samick factory in Indonesia. They have recently moved these IBGs to China, which based off of the information I have received from others, you probably don’t want to buy. However, I still see quite a few of the Indonesian ones on Reverb. The way you can know for sure is to check the serial number before you buy. The 5th & 6th numbers should be 23, which is the factory code for Indonesia. I hope this helps you out, brother man 👍🏻

Studio I may like the Gibson for sure on acoustic tracks that are not full production. Full production studio that Eppy might shine. Both sound great. I think when buying the Gibson your paying for that headstock sticker somewhat. Volume is louder on the Eppy. In my opinion of course, I don't own either, Just going by what I hear here. Wanted to mention that my Epiphone Slash J-45 arrived a couple of days ago. (Still, as of 1/5/2024, on sale on the Epiphone website. And, no, I'm not affiliated with Epiphone in any way.) And I am really loving it. The action is spot on. It's beautiful with the Vermilion burst. And as for any concerns I had with the fatter Slash neck and larger fret radius than the standard J-45, those concerns are gone. My hand is quite large enough for it and I'm not experiencing any discomfort in playing. It really feels good. I'm glad I took the dive. It would have certainly been nice to have played it at a store prior to purchase, but that was never going to happen, unfortunately. It's a fine and well made piece. Opinions will vary of course. I really wanted an Epi EJ-160 (Lennon version) but they appear to be more hit and miss. I'm not even a huge Slash fan, but this Epi Slash J-45 is totally cool.

    Hello Randy thanks for the guitar show.
    I got a Gibson J45 rosewood burst 2022 recently-my first ever Gibson acoustic-its also slimmer in width, and it has a flatter fret board for modern player bending. The sound and everything about it is an absolute treasure. I love saying im a Gibson man, but also an Epiphone and Guild man.
    And I also have an Epiphone IBG J45 Slash Vermillion. It has a chunky neck and flatter fretboard for lots of modern style bending. Slash also wanted lr baggs, larger Grover tuners and an absolutely beautiful red plush interior case.
    And it sounds super Gibsonesque in its own meritorious way. I basically have all the new Epiphone Masterbilts, and all the IBG Epiphones except for the Hummingbird. I also belive my Epiphones are some of the best guitars in the world. I love every single one of them.
    However my Gibson is the Godfather of all the aforementioned guitars.
    Randy I would say youre a Gibson man. But you need both the Epiphone and the Gibson J45.
    Remember all Gibson USA made guitars are hand made thus they all vary in sound ever so slightly.
    If you don't like any particular gibson, then trade it for another one...

    • @randysrhythm
      @randysrhythm  Рік тому +1

      You are correct, I’ve always loved the sound of the Gibsons. The IBG Hummingbird, to my ear, is the cream of the Epiphone crop. I’m actually planning to put this Gibson up against that guitar in an upcoming video. The Slash version of the 45 from Epiphone gets nothing but great reviews, and with a 16” fretboard radius. That’s pretty flat. I own 2 guitars with a 16” radius fretboard and have grown fond of both of them. At some point, I’ll pick up the Epiphone Slash 45. Thanks for sharing your experience with it. By the way, I do plan to keep both of these guitars. Always appreciate getting your insights, brother man 👍🏻

  • @toomuchrose
    @toomuchrose 6 місяців тому +1

    Listening to these two together, just from the video sound, I think it's a matter of sweetness, if you know what I mean. The Gibson has a sweeter sound, the mids are a little softer sounding, a little bit more bell-like. The Epi has a slightly less open sound, not all the harmonics of the notes are coming out - yet. But like all good guitars, I think over time the Epi will open up and those notes will begin to ring out. The thin nitro-cellulose finish of the Gibson will always help to confer a sweet sound, so the Epi isn't going to get the exact same bell-like clarity, but it'll be pretty close, I think. Is the Gibson worth $2200 more? I think probably yes, but maybe not from the point of view of the sound only.

    Is it typically hard, or rather is there a big risk to to taking finish when removing the pickguard? I have the same 50's j-45 and would like to remove the pg, try it without, maybe place a smaller one down the road. Obviously I'd have a guitar tech or luthier do it, but I guess there'd be no guarantees if finish were taken.

    Of the 2 you played I liked the Gibson base response ( even though IT was outa tune) however the Epiphone was definitely sweeter sounding (& it was in tune which helped) but it's a close one. Then again if the Gibson had been in tune I think it was definitely the best

      Hi Susan, the tuning is something I need to pay closer attention to, ma’am. I appreciate the reminder. The Epi 45 has a very different sound and most assuredly different bracing, not to mention the finish. I don’t think Gibson ever intended the Epi 45 to sound anything like the Gibson, and it doesn’t. Also, while there are noticeable differences, I tend to find things that I like on both models. While the Gibson has nicer low mids and low end, sometimes it comes with the sacrifice of sounding a bit boxier. Likewise, the Epiphone has a bit more of a twinkle in its high-end, which at times, sounds a bit tinny, but always kept under control in a good way. Honestly, from a purely subjective standpoint, I think I prefer the Epiphone. 🤷‍♂️.

    It sounds just like you described it. The Gibson is richer in the low end with very subtle highs (yet still almost a scooped sound) while the Epiphone is all mids. Of course, the Gibson is an objectively better guitar (and for 4x the price it should be clearly so), but I'm sure there are lots of people out there whose voices might be better suited to the Epi and lots of recording situations where the tone of the Epi might be preferable.

    I have the Epiphone J45 and I think it is an excellent guitar, but my question is if the 2 guitars weigh the same, because the Epiphone is very heavy, I don't have how to compare, since I don't have the Gibson, could you clarify this doubt. And if all solid body guitars are that heavy?

    • @randysrhythm
      @randysrhythm  15 днів тому

      Hi Mark, small bodied guitars (000, 00, OM) are typically lighter weight. The 45 is a dreadnaughts are a bit heavier because they have more mass. As far as the weight difference between the Gibson 45 and the Epi IBG 45, the Epi is slightly heavier, but not enough to make you put it down. They are both great guitars, just $2,000+ difference, brother man 👍🏻

      @@randysrhythm Thanks for your answer and for your video since you talked a lot about your way of appreciating these guitars, and IF it is true that it is not in your budget to spend so much money for a Gibson the Epi is a VERY GOOD option, I have it, and it works great, I like the sound although one must get used to the characteristic sound of that guitar, since other guitars with the same specifications of woods and bodies (since the J45 is a model that everyone tries to imitate in color and shape) sound different. I think you get the most out of it with a combination of phosphor bronze 12-53 strings.

    I played an Epiphone 'Inspired By' J-45 like the one in this video. Compared to my Gibson J-45 Standard, it was a night and day difference. The Epiphone was so much worse in every way. Obviously, I anticipated that it'd be of appreciably lower quality than the Gibson, but I had no idea just how much worse it would be.

      Hi f3, I now have the first comment that despises the IBG 45! I actually wish that wasn’t your experience with it, but I can surely appreciate your honesty. I didn’t think it would sound anything like the Gibson. However, this IBG has some crazy sustain, which I wasn’t expecting. Onward and upward, right? I hope to hear more from you on the channel. @@randysrhythm Whoa, hey, I definitely don't despise the Inspired By line. It's a great guitar, but the one I played that was supposed to be a choice example wasn't at all what it was cracked up to be. Entirely different altogether. And I think Driftwood Guitars did a video on one where they cut it in half, and of course it was the "Dude, this is totally better than a Gibson. Gibsons are such a ripoff. What kind of idiot would pay for that when you have this Epiphone that's just as good or better?" spiel. Either I just happened to get miraculously lucky and procured the greatest J-45 ever made and played the worst Inspired By Epiphone J-45 specimen ever made, then it was a very, very different guitar. I don't know, it's definitely a trend these days for people to oversell cheaper guitars (same in the gun world) and act like you're a sucker if you buy a higher-priced instrument. We see this a lot with Squier these days. Sure, there's diminishing returns, but in this particular case, it really was a stark contrast. But I absolutely have no ill will toward this guitar or Epiphones whatsoever. I'm glad they exist.

      @@f3uibeghardt522 I surely did misunderstand you then. I have also seen the overselling of less expensive guitars, so I get your point. @@otismanousakos3946 Hi Otis, I have not played the 00 Epiphone yet. I have wanted to, but just never had a chance to. I really wish they would build a Masterbilt version of it with all solid woods. As far the the IBG 45, it is built more like the Gibson J-45 Studio. The body is not as deep, which is one difference. The other main difference is is back and sides. To my knowledge Gibson doesn’t produce a Studio version with mahogany back and sides. It is a cannon, for sure. Just do yourself a favor and don’t buy the cutaway version, should you go down that road. Great to have you on the channel and look forward to hearing more from you, brother man 👍🏻
