  • Transferring as a quadriplegic can be difficult in the early stages after a spinal cord injury. Learning how to transfer independently is an important task to master. This is a video of me transferring from my bed to my power wheelchair. I find it effective to push off of my elbows, instead of having my arms extended.

I have a long body like you do Mason, about 6' - 2". It was an awesome asset before my injury, but a big liability afterwards. It still helps in reaching things, but tough to move around. Takes a lot of getting used to for sure! Thanks so much for your inspirational videos Mason, I know that they're helping many that have found them and will help so many more in the future...
    God bless you!!!

I appreciate your compliment! This is an old video, and I now use a sliding board because it's easier in general, lest strain on the shoulders, and less friction on the bottom. Yeah, it's scary in the beginning. I recommend having someone stand in front of you until you get the hang of it. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Hi Mason, I'm going back to physical therapy for a tune-up and to improve my Wheelchair transfers. When I came in for PT today, my therapist had your wheelchair transfer video on her laptop screen 🤙. She wants to teach me your transfer method! I have no triceps either, and I'm functionally a C6 complete. I expend way too much energy doing transfers the way I had been doing them and have a lot of neck and shoulder pain. So far, your method is working. I transfered 3 times today with your method and each transfer was better than the last. ♿ 😎🤙

Admire you for doing such a great video.
With it, you can make change. Change is needed.
The bed chair transfer needs to be mechanized. Wheelchairs need to be voice activated.
Call the chair to its bedside landing. Wheels should lock. Lift chair up two feet up lower side arms, extend the transfer board.
With this vid….take screenshots of your maneuvers. The photos become flash cards. Make a file to send the 5 - 10 pictures.
Now hit the streets. Looking for an engineer. Might be an engineering student. Might well be in another country.
    Collaboration will bring results.
Seems that the gym has usable design. Treadmills, slant boards, overhead weights and bars.
To be used, or to be modified to use.
Build it and they will come. It has to be that way.
There is a direct line between who we vote for and what we need. There’s startup money through Biden Plan.
If it’s not yet here, it can be -caregivers should be paid a salary. With a wave of the pen, home caregiver draws his or her own social security. Why not, his or her own career is sidetracked in service. Reluctant bosses won’t let a caregiver go to 20 hour workweek? Not anymore.
It makes no sense that we are so far behind.
Christoper Reeves' injury was May, 1995. For perspective….Disabilities Act which mandated curb cuts and handicapped entering…1990.
You have the world before you.
Help is on the way. Don’t worry about what big pharmaceuticals think. Don’t look for Congress to do anything. Crowd source. Vote blue.
Consider a newsletter or listserv, or website. Need to have a two -way street to share information.
It’s there, and it’s been there. Go get it.

What a difference having just a little tricep is! I am super happy to be a C5/6 and have wrist use for tenodisis, but no matter how hard I've tried I cannot do transfers without tricep. It always could be worse is my attitude, make the most of what I can do and that seems to be your attitude as well.

Yes, luckily I got some tricep function back after about a year in my injury. I work on strengthening my triceps everyday. You just have to keep moving forward no matter the circumstance or situation.

Are you kidding Eda? Such a dumb presumptive comment. Mason actually lives as a quadriplegic, it’s not something he read in a book. His transfer is totally fine. Your arrogance after taking a few classes is embarrassing. A good physio would watch and learn from mason, not tell him what to do

My previous wheelchair was the same wheelchair that you have. In May I got a TiLite Aero T manual wheelchair with smart drive power assist that I use when needed. Absolutely LOVE my new wheelchair and power assist device. Transfers aren't easy. I find using my Beasy board makes things easier, but I try not to use it to keep up my strength. I don't have a SCI, but I am a quad due to a severe and progressive movement disorder. What manual wheelchair did you end up going with? I was surprised my insurance covered my new equipment because usually insurances will not cover for step down equipment if you know what I mean. Happy New Year!

Mason, do you have a hard time holding your head up too? I have to wear a cervical collar because 1) C5/C6 fused on their own in the front and 2) my injury messed the muscles in the back of my neck...stretching them or something. I go to the Neurosurgeon Monday, Sept. 14th (SCI awareness month) and may just let them surgically fix them.

    • @masonx54
      @masonx54  3 роки тому +1

I can hold my head up just fine but as far as looking up, I can only look up so high before it starts to hurt/stop.

@@masonx54 Yeah we are lucky (???) because I think it's C3 injures and higher where people have issues turning their head. Mine hurts when I hold it up a bit...but I can move it left and right. It just feels heavy.

They are unnecessary, just make sure you get on your stomach to stretch and revert the changes to your spine from slouching. I’m a c5/6, 15 years in a chair and haven’t worn one in like 12 years. In fact being able to slouch your spine is really important for balance during daily tasks like cooking, dressing, driving, etc etc
