300 Loads of DIY Dry Laundry Detergent

  • To make my dry laundry detergent, I found the recipe from Adrielle Pyper on UA-cam and varied mine per the video. She uses a hand grater and stirs her ingredients by hand. I'm not able to do that so I use my food processor instead. I want to make sure that you are aware that this puts off a lot of dust into the air when you use the food processor. So if you have any kind of allergies to dust or detergents, you might want to use the hand stir and grate method instead of mine.
    The ingredients are :
    Fels Naptha -you'd need three of these for one bar of Zote
    or
    Zote--I use this in white. Pink is scented and white is not. If you don't want to use the Purex Scent Crystals to make your detergent have a nice scent, you can go with the pink Zote. It's not overly scented, but does have more scent than the white Zote. You will find this in the laundry detergent section of your Walmart, Target or grocery store.
    I cut the Zote into cubes and then run it through the food processor on the shred function. I do all of the Zote before doing anything else.
    I make my detergent in three batches and use big bowls. I divide the Zote into three equal parts and put one part in the food processor with the cutting blade now instead of the shredding blade. I put the other two parts into big bowls. Zote is $2.64 for a bar. I also added one bar of Ivory soap which is 40 cents and ran it through the food processor. Add to them in three equal parts:
    a box of Washing Soda $3.97
    Two 1 pound boxes of Baking Soda $1.64 for two
    a Box of Borax $3.89
    After making this recipe, I was told by a viewer that I should NOT put the Oxy Clean product into the mix, and instead put it in with the individual load of laundry. Apparently, the Oxy Clean product will break down over time, so it's better to use it with each load.
    An Oxy Clean type product--I buy mine at the Dollar Tree and I use three pounds or three boxes $3 The containers from the Dollar Tree come with their own scoop and the scoop is a little bit over 2 tablespoons. You can use these for the laundry detergent, as you use 2 tablespoon for a regular load. An extra dirty load, use 3 tablespoons.
    Purex Scent Crystals one bottle $3.47 (don't put this in the food processor)
    You will take all of the ingredients except the scent crystals and spin them through the food processor until it is finely ground then put the batch into a large container (like an old detergent plastic container). Once it's in the plastic container, add 1/3 of the bottle of scent crystals and stir them into the mix. Do the same process with the other two batches making sure you continue to add the scent crystals. Again, you use 2 tablespoon for a load of laundry and 3 for a really dirty or extremely large load.
    The total to make this recipe is $19.01 which is 6 cents a load for three hundred loads. Tide is roughly 18 cents a load on sale.

    Thanks Sandy! I am currently unemployed and a decades long Tide fan. To save some $$ I can't wait to try this recipe to wash my clothes.

      If you have a food processor, I think it will really save your hands from the grating. If you do hand grate it, I've heard you can freeze the soap and then grate it, it's supposed to be easier to grate that way. I loved using my food processor, as it makes the processor so clean afterward. I hope you like this method. If you buy the oxy clean (type product) from Dollar Tree, they come with little scoops inside, and the scoops work perfectly for one large load of clothes. Use half of one for a smaller load. The Purex scent beads that I use don't really add much smell, especially since the batch lasts for a year for me. Maybe one of the more expensive brands of scent beads would have more long lasting smell. Just an fyi. You can even forego the scent beads for unscented, and I've heard of people using essential oils to enhance the smell, but i'm not sure how much or which oils, as I thought "oil" and staining from it, when I thought about adding it to my powder. I'd love to hear how it works for you....I've made two batches, and am coming up on needing to make a third. I hate my high efficiency washing machine, and think I'll go back to the old style (if they still make them), as mine does a terrible job of cleaning clothes. I wonder when there's no agitator, exactly what do the clothes smack against to get clean? Nothing I guess. Sorry for the rant.....Sandy

      Crafting For Almost Everyone Perfect timing for the updated information, I was just in my laundry room looking at a box of Arm and Hammer to see if it was washing soda, nope but it is 2# baking soda box. I DO have a processor and totally agree on using it....soap=clean, no issue there, I have one similar to yours in the garage for large batches. I hope to get the ingredients soon and get to it... maybe when I can grind outside on the patio that is off my kitchen. Fels naphtha is a name I know from my childhood, my mom had a bar of it in the laundry she used like a "stain stick" back in the day. Thanks again, I love your videos and follow many of the same crafters (Lindsey) as you do.

      I couldn't have grated soap, and when others said they used their food processor only for soap, I wondered why....after all, don't we use soap to clean our processors? So glad you liked it and hope you give it a try. I've been using my soap for over two years and wouldn't go back to store bought.

      I use s regular blender and it makes it much finer. Add a cup of the baking soda or washing soda to help the soap blend. The end result is just like the powder soap you buy

      Thanks so much Jo....I was given one tip from a couple of viewers, and that was to save the Oxy powder that I buy at the Dollar Tree, and put a scoop of it in with each load of laundry, because, according to these viewers, it doesn't work if it sits over time....not sure, but I did change so I no longer put that in the powder, and instead throw some in with each load....So glad you like my channel...I think you'll really like this detergent, and I make one batch each year, and it's not that hard, especially if you use your food processor...and you won't believe how shiny your processor is after you clean it....If I didn't say in the video, the reason I made this detergent, was because I bought a high efficiency washer and it doesn't really clean anything. There's hardly any water involved, and no rotator, so basically the clothes just slosh around. I thought maybe if I made my own cleanser, it would work better, because there's nothing in the mix that isn't a cleaning agent, and once I tried it, I've convinced myself my clothes are cleaner...Still can't do anything large in my large capacity washer, as they don't get wet all the way through....darn it.....Thanks for the nice note...Sandy

      Crafting For Almost Everyone Sandy, I used to have a high efficiency washer also but didn’t like the fact that it only used a little water so when I started having problems with it I went back to a regular washer. Thanks for the extra tip on the Oxy Powder I’m going to give it a try.

      I don't know what they consider to be "high efficiency" about these washers..they might use less water, but more times than not, the clothes need to be cleaned a second time to ensure they actually got wet....frustrating...Glad I could offer you a tip that might help you as well....Sandy

    i made this today, at least 1/3 of it. It was so fast. Had ran out of my home made liquid and myhouse cleaner needed more detergent and asked me to go ahead and make my dry I was trying. I took less than 5 minutes to make and let the dust settle. I put 1/3 of ingredients in my food processor with the blade and shredder as i shredded the zote, the blade was busy in the bottom part chopping and mixing the rest of the ingredients. Sooooo much easier to make than the liquid laundry detergent. Thanks for the idea. I had already thought to try it dry and then i found your food processor method and was sold on it.

      I'm so glad you tried it and hope you love it as much as I do...The best part is when you take your food processor parts out of the dishwasher and see how sparkling clean they are....I love that almost as much as the detergent...haha.....Hope you'll let me know how you like the detergent...Sandy

    Love it! Makes no sense using commercial laundry detergent as it is way over rated and expensive. Plus people tend to use way to much . The point is to effectively clean laundry and this works. Everything added is safe for all laundry and avoids many added chemicals. You know what is in your product and it is HE friendly. I make mine with Zote soap grated, powdered color safe bleach, baking soda, 3 boxes of dollar store laundry detergent powder, and a small box of Gain powdered laundry detergent. I SKIP the borax and washing soda due ro cost but my recipe doesn't miss it.. The gain smells so good that I skip the laundry beads. My batch is about $14 dollars and lasts ( with the tablespoon measurement) 6 to 8 months. Great job!!

    I bought a food processor at a garage sale for about $5.00 that I use strictly for crafts. I have also seen them at thrift stores like Good Will for a cheap price. That way you don't have to use your kitchen one if you don't want to. I also make this soap but never thought to add the Purex crystals. I will do that next time I make it. TFS!

      My high efficiency washer wasn't high efficiency, so I thought maybe if I used all soaps and no added waters (like in liquid detergents) maybe I'd get better results...still not great, but that's because high efficiency ones that are top loaders don't have an agitator so the water just sloshes around, plus there's not enough water to cover anything bulky like comforters and towels, so they never seem really clean to me. I'm not sure who came up with the high efficiency idea, but it isn't a winner....at least not for me.. Thanks for the nice note...my dog's say Hi...

    My local grocery store carries everything except the Zote and the Washing Soda. I found the Zote at my local Big Lots store for $1.00 a bar, and my A&H washing soda at my local Ace Hardware store. I did find the oxygen cleaner at the Dollar Store. It cost me $6 for each of the Borax and washing soda, $1 for the Zote, $1 for the Ivory, $3 for 3 containers of the oxy booster, $2 for the baking soda and about $6 for the bottle of scent booster (I chose a lavender scented one). I also picked up a 5 gallon bucket with a lid at my local Ace hardware store for about $3. All in all, my total cost came out to be a little less than $30. This should last me well over 6 months, so I believe it will be well worth it in the long run.
    Thank you for sharing you recipe and making this awesome video!

      I'm not sure how many people you're doing laundry for, but one batch lasts me about a year for my husband and I. I no longer put the Oxy booster or scent booster in with the batch of detergent and just put a scoop of the oxy and some of the scent booster in with each load, as a viewer told me the oxy loses efficiency if it's open in the detergent for a year, and the scent will dissipate if it is in the detergent that long as well. The scent will keep its smell if it's in it's original container...sorry to add a couple of steps to your laundry, but it should have more scent and be cleaner is the oxy is put in the washer alone and the detergent and scents added to the washer..

      I love this laundry detergent and one batch lasts around one year for my husband and me...I'd bought a high efficiency washer that didn't clean my clothes, so thought maybe it was my detergent, and that's why I changed to this...the clothes are a little bit cleaner, but still, high efficiency means very little water, and some clothes come out of the machine already dry....that doesn't seem to be the way washers should work....Sorry for the rant, but wanted you to know why I started doing it...it will save you a lot of money too....I'm so glad you enjoy my videos..Sandy

      If you have a food processor, you'll be happy you used it for this, as when it comes out of the dishwasher, you won't believe how sparkly clean your food processor bowl will be. I'm not sure if I put a towel over the tube when blending, but really recommend you do so, otherwise you'll see dust coming out of the top of your processor..You can do the soap grating by hand, but I couldn't, and videos I've seen where they do hand grating, looks like it's a terrrible experience...Hope you enjoy the soap....saundralparker@yahoo.com Sandy

      Veronica, I really like my detergent and have a high efficiency washer that I absolutely hate, as it doesn't clean anything well. All of my friends that own high efficiency washer say the same thing, and it's the reason I started making my own detergent, as I thought maybe the detergents you buy have too many fillers for the High efficiency washers. Hi Sandy, I just finished making the full batch of laundry soap. I grated Zote with my food electric food grater. My food processor canister and blade were half the size of yours so I ended up using a large bowl to mix up all but the Zote and baking soda. I then processed the Zote and baking soda in batches and added to the rest. Scented the whole batch and mixed with a sturdy spoon then divided up to saved containers with the Oxi scoops. I'll let you know my opinion after a few loads. Thanks.

      Did you run your food processor through your dishwasher? I was amazed at how shiny the blades and bowl were after I did. Can't wait to hear about yours and if you like the soap. I really hate my washing machine. It's supposed to be high efficiency and doesn't have an agitator, it's a top loader, so the clothes just spin around and don't get wet or clean. I thought it was my laundry soap, so went to this recipe and two plus years later, am still loving it. My clothes are a little cleaner, but it's the machine's fault and not my detergents....Looking forward to hearing how you like the soap. I just use the little scoop that comes in the Oxy that I get from the Dollar Tree and it is the right amount for a big load. Sandy,
      Yes, I put most of the processor parts in my dishwasher. My washer is an old Amana I got with my home and is probably 10+ years old. I had some success with the soap, a dishcloth that had wiped up coffee and it came out great. Just one item so far after several loads that was still stained, I will have to remember to pre soak some stuff or put a stain stick on but generally I am pleased. Thanks, the savings is worth it since My clothes are not usually soiled badly.

    I've learned to put the Zote in the fridge for a few days, grate in the food processor, let the flakes dry on cooky sheets then follow your process with mixing everything in the food processor. I double the recipe so I don't have to make it often. My one problem is that the dry soap cakes solid. I chip it up and use the processor again. THANK YOU for your video.

      Jane, I just grate my Zote in the food processor and I never have any clumps, my detergent is as fine today (9 months later) as it was then. Maybe the sweat it acquires in the frig makes it get clumpy. Could you try grating the Zote without the refrigerator next time and see if it gets solid? Don't you love how clean your food processor bowl is after making a batch? It just shines like it's new. Sandy

    I have never gotten a response from any UA-cam person before. 😕
    Thank you and may God bless you,
    Sarah Fortune

      Sarah, I'm glad you asked. I always use warm water to wash my clothes and put the detergent in before I add my clothes so I know the water is hitting the detergent. I have a high efficiency washer, which to me, only means that it uses very little water, and that's why I put the detergent in first. I'm not sure if using warm water makes a difference with dissolving the detergent, but maybe that's part of the issue you're having as well...Hope I helped. Please let me know if you need any more information..

    Good for you Sandy. It is always satisfying to make home made cleaning supplies. I used to can bushels of fruit when our children were young. It was a family event for sure. I later realized it was cheaper for us to buy fruit from Costco as the boys were older. hahaha That led to most of my home made things going to the wayside, with just two of us in the nest. LOL I don't know how I would make it when "home made" was the norm to survive???? hahaha Thanks "HEAPS" for sharing. Love the comment about your mixer being cleaner than before using it!

      Honestly, if you saw my food processor now, you'd think it was brand new. This is so easy and I never have to carry those big containers of laundry soap from the store anymore. I really love this detergent and it lasts forever! You wouldn't believe how easy it is. My High Efficiency washer wasn't very efficient before I changed to this soap. Now my clothes actually get clean, believe it or not! Sandy

    • @craftingforalmosteveryone
      @craftingforalmosteveryone  6 років тому

      I use warm water and have never had an issue and I've been using only this powder for over two years. I think the food processor grinds it so finely that you won't have an issue. I just had a viewer ask about using it in cold water, so I did an experiment. Put a scoop that I would normally use for a large load of laundry into a glass of cold water out of the tap, so not super cold. It almost all dissolved within a couple of seconds except for the scent beads that took just a little while longer. If you are worried about having it dissolve in cold water, I'd recommend trying my cold water experiment, and then dump it into your laundry like you would liquid detergent. I really like this detergent and have a high efficiency top load washer that is the worst washer ever invented. Since there's no agitator in the center, there's nothing for the clothes to slap against, and since it's "high efficiency," it doesn't use enough water so rugs and bedding aren't completely wet ..I thought it was commercial laundry detergents that caused the lack of cleaning, so changed to this recipe. My clothes are cleaner, but still not as clean as my old washer would have gotten them...Please let me know if you have any other questions, as I'd be happy to answer them. Sandy

    How much for an HE washer and how much for top loader washer? Love your recipe!

    • @craftingforalmosteveryone
      @craftingforalmosteveryone  4 роки тому

      I have a HE top loader washer, and mine holds the equivalent of two loads of the old top loaders that had the agitator.. I use a full scoop for one load...I get my scoops from the Dollar Tree with their Oxy type cleansers that I put directly into the detergent, but was told by a viewer that I shouldn't do that as the Oxy products should be used sooner (as one of these batches lasts me a year for two people). I don't know how well your HE washer cleans your clothes, but mine does a terrible job, and I wish I still had a machine with an agitator, as those did get laundry clean.
      I think you'll be happy with this laundry detergent because you'll know exactly what's in it, and you'll save a ton of money, and during this pandemic, won't have to worry if laundry detergent becomes the next product we can't find on the shelves.

    zote! So my mom used this bar back when i was little to wash on the wash board by hand. And she grated it sometimes for the washer.
    This looks like so much work. 😱

    • @craftingforalmosteveryone
      @craftingforalmosteveryone  7 років тому +1

      Actually, the food processor does all of the work and I just had to find a container large enough to hold it. I bought a new HE washer and it just wasn't getting my clothes clean so I decided to try this. At least now my clothes seem to be more clean. (I'm not really sure what high efficiency means other than it uses a lot less water so my clothes weren't even wet all the way through once the load was finished.) So now I also add a second rinse cycle to towels and things that are really hard to wash. I'm also retired now, so have the time to experiment with things like this. I remember when I was working and other people made their own detergents and thinking "when do they find the time." Now I know. Retire, buy a crappy HE washer and you don't have a choice. LOL. I hope this helped. My grandmother used a wringer washer and I still think about how much work that involved.

    Hi Sandy, was looking over videos & found this one. Are you still using this detergent. I have one questions...it looks like just about everything you use is not scented, I have to buy the free detergent, the ones that are white & don't contain any of scents. This seems like it would work the same as those. Do you agree? I'm just not into making a lot & not be able to use it. I'm all for clean clothes. I wouldn't use the last beads you put in for the scents. Great job.
    Mary

    • @craftingforalmosteveryone
      @craftingforalmosteveryone  6 років тому +1

      Mary, Yes, I still use only this. I think if you take out the beads, it shouldn't have a smell, but I would smell the Zote or Fels Naptha bar before buying it, as it would be the only thing you would use that smells. If that bothers you, you could substitute Ivory Bath Soap. The way I'd do that, is look at the weight of the Zote bar, then see how much an Ivory bar weighs and let's say the Zote bar weighs 8 oz. and the Ivory weighs 2 oz, then I'd use four bars of Ivory instead of the Zote. I think that should work. You could always use more Ivory, as it would just make your detergent a little more powerfully soapy, but not sudsy. This soap recipe doesn't make a lot of suds, which is good. Ivory is supposed to be super mild, so it should be a good substitute.
      I started making my own detergent because I bought a high efficiency upright washer. It doesn't have the agitator in the center...it never occurred to me that not having an agitator would make a huge difference in getting clothes clean so I thought it was my detergent. This soap does help my clothes get a little cleaner, but I'm so disappointed in my washer, and would never buy one again without some kind of agitator in the middle, as I'd really like my washer to wash my clothes. (Don't we all?) I hope I helped. Definitely use a food processor if you have one (or buy one at a garage sale or thrift store) as grating the soap is more than I could ever attempt. If you do choose to grate it by hand, freeze the bar first, as I heard it makes it easier to grate. And the soap really makes your food processor clean and shiny once you put it through the dishwasher (or hand wash to get the soap out.) Not sure if you saw my other cleaning product video, but these don't have much smell (other than the vinegar). ua-cam.com/video/MFiQORbtE9k/v-deo.html

      Crafting For Almost Everyone. I will definitely take your advice on the soap bar. I don't have a food processor but will look for one at a Goodwill or thrift store. I don't use them for anything else, so it would just be for soap making.
      I watched another lady make it this morning without a f.p. & I don't think I could stir it for tbe length of time she had too. F.P. seems like the way to go....outside with a mask on. Mary, So glad you have an agitator in your washer. Maybe an old blender would work for the soap too, if you chop it into small cubes like I did. I think you could find one of those at thrift stores and garage sales more often...Just a thought. I make mine inside, and put a towel over the top so the dust can't come out. Forgot to do it on the video, but normally remember to do it. I only have to make one batch a year for Rich and I...Not sure how many people you do laundry for, but if you made a double batch, you could still only have to do it once a year for four people...Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Kim, I don't use bleach because it turns things yellow. I have a lot of iron in my water and that turns your whites yellow. There's a really strong powerful product called "Iron Out" that you put in with your whites (look in the plumbing department at Walmart to find it). It is really harsh and don't breathe it in because it's horrible to smell, but it should help with the white problem. You don’t need baking soda. It’s just a filler. By adding a filler you’re reducing the concentration of soap per dose, reducing cleaning effectiveness.
    Finely powdered soap may be counterproductive because you want water softeners to dissolve and disperse completely before soap does.

      Did you ever consider how much soap, the only cleaning agent in your concoction, you’re using to wash a load? Well, it’s quite easy: 15 oz of soap using F-N washes 300 loads. 15/300 = 0.05 oz of soap/load. A paper clip weighs 0.05 oz.
      This recipe and dose produce a solution of very dilute soapy wash water. You might as well use plain water!
      Your cost comparison with Tide is flawed because Tide delivers much more cleaning agents per load.

      No, I'm a little bit afraid of lye, and know I could do some serious damage with it and probably would....I'll leave that to the experts like you.. Do you ever sell your soaps online? You do such a beautiful job of packaging them, I'll bet your soaps are just as amazing as the boxes they come in.

I don't know how aware you are about the impact you have, but I am. And if I didn't think it's repetitive I'd thank you in every comment. Thank you. See?
      Oh, P. S. No, not yet online. I'm making a new batch with new boxes, and working on putting them on my Facebook page, but at the rate they are selling I don't have enough to put up.

    guys you can make those crystals she has DIY, the chrystals are only Epson salt and fragrance, get you a big bag of Epson salts at the grocery store or drug store and some essential oil of your choice and put some drops in the salts and there you go you have the same thing she bought. so it is also a lot cheaper to make than to buy what she purchased.

      I have no idea if you can use it or not with sensitive skin, and wouldn't want you to try it and end up with issues. There's no way for you to buy half the quantity of the products I used, as each only comes in a large box and the Zote comes in one size bar, so unfortunately, you'll need to buy the ingredients that make the full recipe...the recipe is below the video and you can always try cutting it in half.
      As for sensitive skin, you could do research on each individual product to see if it's safe for sensitive skin, but since I don't have sensitive skin, I didn't do that research.

    How well does this disolve in cold water?

    • @craftingforalmosteveryone
      @craftingforalmosteveryone  6 років тому +1

      I don't use cold water, only warm, but....I took a full scoop that I would use for a large load and put it in a glass of cold water. Almost all of it immediately dissolved, because the food processor makes it into a fine powder. The only thing that immediately did not dissolve, were the scent beads (that I also put in the food processor), but after maybe two minutes, even those were minimal. I'm not saying it will work in cold water, but those are the results of my mini experiment. I hope that helped you. If you found that once you made it, it didn't dissolve in your water, you might want to put a scoop into a glass of warm water, let it dissolve, and then dump that into your cold water wash so it isn't a waste. I think once you try this detergent, you'll really like it. I have a high efficiency washer and it never did a good job cleaning my clothes (and we're retired so our clothes aren't seriously dirty.) But even if my husband did yard work and got some dirt on his socks, even pre-treating, our machine just didn't clean them. I thought it was the commercial detergent I was using, so converted to this. I'm not saying his socks come out crystal clean, but they are much better than they were before. Those top load high efficiency washers just aren't that high efficiency...without an agitator, the clothes have nothing to really move them...just my two cents. Hope that gave you something to think about. Sandy

      Jeff, I wish I could say I tried them, but was afraid of what the oils would do to my clothes...As for the chemicals in the crystals. I don't always put them in, as I think of them as entirely optional. If you leave them out, you'll be making a scent free (or almost scent free) option. That works too. You know I'm not sure what they do together, but my clothes are clean and I'm happy with the results. If you find out something else I'd be happy to know about it. I got my recipe from Adrielle Pyper on You Tube and maybe she knows more about it than I do. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck with finding the answer. Maybe you could make one small batch with each and see if you have a difference in your results. After reading your comment, my husband did some research and what he found was that washing soda adds water softening properties to your laundry while borax doesn't effectively soften water but has great cleaning properties. Not sure if that helps you at all. Another site said if you use borax but are having trouble getting things clean (not white) replacing borax with washing soda will make your detergent more powerful. Another good reason to use both I guess. Sandy

    Huge excess of two different water softeners, typically the case with these DIY recipes.
    Oxy loses potency in presence of moisture. Look up active ingredient. Explains why. Store tightly sealed in its container. Add separately.
    Works as well as plain hot water. See comparison tests by Reviews on YT.
    Big plus: you didn’t bore us with your life story, as some do. Nice jingle at the end.
    BTW, this isn’t a detergent. The only surfactant is bar soap. It contains no detergents.

    • @craftingforalmosteveryone
      @craftingforalmosteveryone  6 років тому

      Thanks for the information, Frank, I really appreciate it. So are you saying I shouldn't add the Oxy at all, or add it to the water when doing a load of laundry? We have well water that has a high iron content, and keeping clothes white (even with a lot of water processing systems in the house) is difficult. I'd appreciate any insight you can offer. Sandy

    • @FrankGutowski-ls8jt
      @FrankGutowski-ls8jt 6 років тому

      Crafting For Almost Everyone
      Well, Oxyclean releases hydrogen peroxide, the active bleaching agent, in water. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes rapidly. Oxyclean is affected by humidity. It’s packaging attempts to be airtight. So it’s preferable to keep it dry and add separately. It’s not an iron stain remover. Hydrogen peroxide oxidizes organic compounds like proteins and fruit juice dyes, eg.
      Your water softeners should sequester iron and other hard water minerals, preventing them from reacting with soap. Rinsing is problematical however because residual soap can react and deposit scum in untreated water. Therefore it’s advisable to add vinegar (a weak acid) or citric acid (a chelate) to the rinse in order to prevent deposits from accumulating.
      If you see particulate matter, including rust, then, obviously, install an inline filter.

      First of all, can you tell me how old you are and if you are going to a doctor or a rheumatologist. If you are going to a rheumatologist, they can do blood tests that will tell you if you definitely have it. A lot of times people are mis-diagnosed with RA, when they don't really have it. There are really great medicines today for the person who does have RA and they should stop the progression of the disease before your hands would look like mine. It is EXTREMELY rare for people to have the kind of deformity I have, so don't worry, and make sure you get a good rheumatologist and if you do have RA, it's not the end of the world, there are a lot of things much worse. You need to make sure you get the proper diagnosis and medicines if you do have it to ensure your hands don't get deformed. Hope this helped.
