📸 I've been testing this filter/hood thing for a few days now. Here's all the intel below! 📸 The eins Japan 1.2mm thick UV filter (thinnest filter in the market) is still too thick for the Q3 43 to activate macro mode while using the 43’s square hood. Currently, your only option to use the 43 square hood and a filter are with using an ultra slim filter (anything 3mm or thinner is confirmed, but possibly slightly thicker)… and then slightly unscrew the hood (1 full rotation with the 1.2mm filter, likely full hood removal with anything thicker than 1.2mm) when you want to engage macro mode. Personally I’m opting for this minor but annoying extra step of 1 full hood rotation when I want macro mode. Why? Via Lightroom data, it appears I used macro for approximately 1% of all my photos on my old Q2 and Q3 28. So it’s not something I use that often. Secondly and most importantly, it’s for just a tiny bit of extra protection and insurance… as this is my dedicated travel camera that goes along with me to some pretty gnarly environments. Certainly not ideal. But hey, those are the cards we’re dealt with. Your style of photography and type of places you travel to might not warrant the need for a filter at all. I would imagine a third party square hood would have to appear on the market to fix this issues. Or, based on my measurements, you could permanently modify your existing Leica 43 hood if you really want to get wild. EDIT: Via the rumor mill, it appears that Leica may be releasing some ultra ultra thin filters sometime in the near future.
Leica mention the issue’ in the instruction book, p35. They suggest buying the round hood #19658 (about £/$200) if you want filter+hood and maybe macro. I think it’s disgraceful on such an expensive camera and I can’t understand why they would release such a shallow hood that would restrict the owner’s use of the camera. Good luck with your workaround

Well this is a major turnoff for that kind of money. WTF - now you have to decide what risk you have to accept. Remove hood and risk damage to lens with no filter or spend more money on another different round hood and change the look of the camera for extra $250. Must be a bunch of DEI engineers designing this now. Also you mention you have the 100VI - were you aware the dynamic range on both q3 and 100vi are almost identical? The 100vi and 100v both also have ND filters and the q doesn't. You can also put in a recipe to get the q3 look on the 100vi. Plus personally I don't particularly care for the color of the q3 43 - I prefer the original color - although I could live with it but would prefer darker. Also going from a 100vi 35mm to 43mm - there really isn't much compression loss you get from that range but 28 to 43 you can easily see compression loss. Maybe Leica just thinks everyone has a money tree and GAS.
