  • What is tailwheel flying? The question is the answer. Let me elaborate.
Not a day goes by that I don’t feel the ache in the dead center of my chest - because every day I want to ask my dad something about flying. I want to tell him about my flying. I want to have all those conversations pilots have with each other. I want him to know I became a pilot. I learned. I felt the disappointments… conquered so many challenges… and learned so much about myself through the process.
He flew a lot of airplanes, from C123’s like he is filming here, or Cessna 150s and Piper Warriors in his latter years. But - to my knowledge… he never flew a tailwheel.
My dad was also a lawyer… so he never lost an argument. He knew every question answer on Jeopardy. He was an encyclopedia. It leaves little room for a son to get one up on him. I never won an argument with him… but I did get my tailwheel endorsement.
I could delve into the particulars… how you really learn not to land when learning tailwheel… how you master directional control… how your feet dance in a gleeful cadence to keep yourself and the plane from getting dented and twisted… how it feels when you squeak a gentle wheel landing… how you are busiest in the phases where nosewheel pilots are relaxing…
    I loved it.
I loved every second of the learning.

My dad was also an accomplished pilot in GA. He earned his ATP too late in life and never got to fly for Airlines which was his dream. He did however fly an ex president, country music and TV stars around in Tennessee, Georgia, and surrounding states. He flew thousands of hours hauling mail in Beech 18s, hundreds of hours flying auto parts from east TN all over the country. He also starting teaching me to fly at age 11. He passed away in 2010 and I can understand how it feels to have a question you know dad could answer, but now you can't. God bless and RIP to our pilot dads.

Man, this is wonderful. The 'grilled cheese of flying'....Love that. It is the pure basic sandwich , that most everyone overlooks, but if they slowed down and got away from the conventional gear, castering nosewheel steering, and 14 dollars sub sandwiches, they would see and feel that tailwheel flying is exactly that... pure basic flying, in it's best form. Thanks for creating and posting.

love it. especially the 8mm footage, your dad's 8mm footage (omg!), and .. the idea that tailwheel is more demanding but doesn't demand perfection.

Thanks man! It's all your fault. And yeah I wish I had a lot more footage... it probably existed somewhere at one time.

You may not be able to tell your dad, but the fact that you still have some of his video footage of his flying is an incredible keepsake! We all strive to beat our dads at something, and our dads all strive for us to succeed beyond them.

I have been doing a pure widescreen format for awhile now... I just like it for some reason.
