The jail scene is actually pretty damn good in the remake, the original aside from the "i'm not your mary" line isnt particularly well done. The one scene that fumbled in the remake is the "ANYWAY??" one, which was terrible, the one part that looks and plays exactly like most people thought the SH2 remake would turn out to be before release.
That cutscene of Maria behind the bars is absolutely top notch, the lighting, James' expression, Maria looking at the camera while it zooms in... it's incredible.
I liked the OG Maria’s condescending “bitchier” tone in her voice a million times better, but this stoic (ish) Maria I guess fits the overall tone of the remake better.
I think making her bitchy makes her less unnaturally soothing to James. If Maria is more calm, cool, and collected despite the dangers around. It doesn't do well to build this temptation for James to fall into old habits. Maria is James' lust and desire for sex and affection. If she doesn't come off as seductive but also feel something is "wrong". she doesn't serve as a good trial for James.
@@MC_Hammerpants what Jawline Maria looks perfect💯. And the actress did a pretty good job with her charracter however, I prefer the og maria but the new isn't bad at all
I think, regarding the cell scene. The vibes are both unnerving, for two different reasons. For me, in the original it feels like Maria is a creature mimicking casual conversation. While the remake, feels like she's a puppet. She's artificially saying things that come off as casual conversation. Both times to entice James. I would have liked to see more venom in the deliveries of that scene. But ultimately I like what they tried here.
She moves like she don't care Smooth as silk, cool as air Ooh, it makes you wanna cry She doesn't know your name And your heart beats like a subway train Ooh, it makes you wanna die Ooh, don't you wanna take her? You wanna make her all your own? Maria You've gotta see her Go insane and out of your mind Latina Ave Maria A million and one candle lights
Maria! I've just met a girl named Maria, And suddenly that name Will never be the same To me. Maria! I've just kissed a girl named Maria, And suddenly I've found How wonderful a sound Can be. Maria! Say it loud and there's music playing- Say it soft and it's almost like praying- Maria . . . I'll never stop saying Maria!
13:30 I finally understand the story. If mary and james had never visited silent hill Mary would not have died. The woman who was a "saint" actually was a witch, probably from the cult and indeed got cast out. Died of starvation after her undyingly devoted lover drowned while trying to find her in the storm. Her spirit probably awoke once she sensed the love james held for Mary so she cast a curse as a ghost on Mary so she would die and Lure James not so long after in order to appear as Maria and keep him to herself. She dies in the maria ending because she cannot exist/haunt outside silent hill. In the drown ending James dies just like the old lover and in rebirth James doesnt know It but if sucessful he will bring Maria/the witch back to life through Marys corpse. Only good ending is LEAVE. James literally frees himself from so many things.
That's a very good idea if we lean into the mythical side of the story - What I read that Mary probably got sick from the poisonous gas coming from Toluca Lake she visited with James
Listen to the old VA again and tell me that one is better than the new one 💀 There's just no way. Salóme Gunnarsdóttir did an amazing job at portraying Maria. Yes, I like the original and grew up with it but I'm not gonna get blinded by nostalgia, if it's clear how much improvement the remake has in regards to voice acting and mocap. Everyone working on this game is incredibly talented.
She’s fine in the remake. More realistic facial expressions and movements. There’s some intense nostalgia for the original, I get it. But some are being too critical for critical sake.
I actually think all the voice acting is rather strong. The only two I don't really like as much are Maria behind bars (I thought the original was more sinisterly playful, and I thought the lighting was more effective) and Angela on the staircase (I liked the mood swings, the mockery, and the bitterness)
01:10 I like James' "oh" reaction. so natural in his self-realization . This overall cutscene's dialogue and acting is also even more 10 times better than original for its more grounded acting.
So few complaints, and few positives. The new scenes the VA for Maria delivers really well. Felt like she had more freedom. 1. The hallway scene she teleports behind James even though she was running ahead of him 0.5 seconds ago 2. Missing the dialogue of her crying for his help before being killed really takes away the tension. 3. James getting up so quickly afterwards, even with his body sway, looks too soon 4. I can’t tell if it’s edited, but the “aren’t you Maria” and the “I’m not your Mary” feels again too soon. Like there needed to be one more second of tension. 5. I really wish the lights in the jail scene gave more shadows over her. The OG nailed it. Especially her like “eye roll” when he got upset by asking her for a straight answer. Now that’s missing. I can live with it, but I hope we can mod a few of the things I pointed out. I’m sure a patch or two from Bloober could fix it, if they actually think it needs to be fixed, just like the stutter everyone is having on PC.
Yeah I agree with the pauses not being long enough in a lot of the cutscenes. Especially in the video tape cutscene with Laura. Everything just needs a couple more seconds to breathe.
I actually like that’s she’s well lit. The uncanniness that comes from Maria comes from what you CAN see, how much she resembles “his Mary”. When she starts talking about these things only Mary should know it starts to feel like James has been gaslit to the extreme… to the point that something that looks and quacks like a duck isn’t a duck to him. How she looks is a focal part of what makes her scary, obscuring that I think would be counter-intuitive
Well maybe all the people complaining about Maria should probably try getting the Maria ending from the OG more rather than ‘In the Water’ all the time? Hm?
I find The "Lakeview Hotel" a more fitting special place for two lovers but, since they cut off that line well, "Heaven´s Night" works for me on these days.
3:58 the way the camera goes to the horizon of the Toluca Lake and shows the light of the Hotel... Almost like the game is telling James is getting lured away from Mary after meeting Maria
I feel even more depressing when knowing this Maria craves for attention "way better" than the OG bright-side Maria. Her voice and action might be subtle to some in this remake, but they are very tempting for this James who is already heart broken...and confusing. He doesn't know if he should treat her sub par or closer to what his heart already wants - a better Mary prehaps. Or maybe I drank too much.
Maybe you shouldn't drink when you try to give people your opinions. You're basically saying that you could have said, "I love ducks," but somehow, you decided to talk about Silent Hill, and we shouldn't take you seriously.
I watched these cutscenes without the nostalgia glasses and they nailed the uncanny valley with Maria, specially in the first meeting with her and the cell scene, both key scenes to her character. Of course somethings are not perfect, for example the american movie style silent death just doesn't disturb you enough like the original where Maria is screaming.
The 'anyway' scene facial animations were bad. The cell scene direction was bad, though I can tell this was probably the director's fault and not the VA. It's clearly an intentional change, but I couldn't tell you why.
So , basically she is a creature of silent hill and she really didn't die in those sections and is just there to torture james by drying in same way that his late wife does , so he will return to silent hill? I say if james were gonna learn nothing form all that , so why not just pick maria early in game 😅
@@Hydrocannon well , she died 3 times , i think no woman act that way with a man for the first time they meet.(life's so cooked for me...) And be like and sound like just his late wife.
Maria’s VA does a great job in this game. With the exception of the scene behind the prison bars, where I think her performance feels too authentically compassionate and not menacing enough, and the scene where Pyramid Head kills her, where her silence isn’t as impactful as the original’s horrified screaming, she nails most of the lines she’s given, replicating the emotion of the original while making it sound more natural. She also bounces off James super well, whose own voice work is fantastic in the remake.
Grew up with the OG. Some people are annoyingly gatekeeping the hell out of this game. The acting is fine for what it is. The whole game itself is fine for what it is. It's the best possible version of remaking something with basically a cult following. Bloober thankfully understood what Team Silent did with the OG and it shows. They were really careful in how they add and change some dialogues between James and Maria. The new Heaven's Night scene is a good example of showcasing their dynamic, how delusional James is, how manipulative Maria really is. It's a passable remake and is more than enough to get the attention of a new generation of players.
I absolutely think Salóme Gunnarsdóttir utterly crushed this performance, I’m fixated every time she’s on screen. She’s so cool and confident, it’s like her very nature is enticing James to stay in the dark-i mean obviously that’s a big part of her role here but it never feels forced, it never even feels constructed, it’s like they just got video of a woman who’s had a very interesting life and just fit it into this game These moments especially: 2:49 7:09 18:47 22:25 And how she’s suddenly a little more stiff behind those bars as the line between Maria and Mary really begin to blur, and like Mary before her, she’s trapped yet acting like everything’s fine when she’s already dead: 25:50
So, when I was exploring the area with Maria around the motel, I hear her say “James” in the tone as If trying to get my attention. Next thing I know one of the monsters comes out of nowhere and scared the crap out of me. I think what made it so scary was the way she said “James” as if trying to get your attention in the sense of someone mishearing what you said, as opposed to a normal person would yell, “look out!!! What is that thing?”
I've never played Silent Hill before and just beat the remake. Maria truly gave me the creeps. I never felt like I could trust her. The scene at 25:30 really gave me an uneasy feeling with the way she gaslights James and her general looks and mannerisms. I wanted James to ask her why she left the room that she was resting in in the first place.
@@FrapsDirector iam not saying that the remake maria is bad she is actually good but i think og had that switch between maria and mary which led to a high effect of confusion than the remake so i prefer the og
the only thing i dont like about maria in the remake is her voice. in my opinion, even if her old dialog might have seemed less natural it was her VOICE that did it for me. i cant desctibe it but her last voice actress was just perfect for the character while this one is fine but something is missing. i loved when video game characters had very dramatic voices, like ada wong in the re4 original. now maria just seems sounds and looks like a girl you could see walking down the street which might be good but i guess its just not it for me
@@_Makii_ the new game is beautiful, james acting is good and everyone else is also good, but why couldn´t they just have kept the original script through the whole game, and also the same screenplay? don´t care about anything else, they can change the puzzles, areas, boss fights but not the acting. This game is a 10/10 in terms of environment, 4/10 in terms of story, they did not respect the original according to me.

@@urtypicalfemboy-nm3fx I know, but compare the silent hill 2 remake and the original scene and tell me which one has more emotion to it, in my opinion at least, they could've done much better in that scene ;-;
Man, Luke Roberts gives a really great performance in that Jail scene and I hate to see it go to waste because of the change in lighting and direction for Maria. I don't know if Salóme Gunnarsdóttir is responsible or whoever her voice director was, but they should've aimed closer to the original tone in almost all of her scenes because Monica Taylor Horgan's inconsiderate/sadistic amusement was haunting stuff. The realistic gaslighting in this new version is a type of horror that doesn't really work when the person you're relying on for answers and empathy has never been a reliable source of either. This new scene just feels like Maria being Maria. The old version felt like you were mistaking her for someone else. If one thing could be different though, I'd pick the lighting. The blacked out eyes I think are much more important.
I had to check this again because I've just finished the game and I never saw her a second time in the labyrinth, I walked down the "creepy corridor", turned around and all the arms were back then I left to tulca lake, no idea what happened there
I don't understand... So, is maria real or not? I mean there is ending where he and maria going back, but maria seems have same illness like his late wife
Maria and all the other monsters aren’t real. They’re created by James’s subconscious. Maria specifically is created to torment James and remind him of his wife’s death over and over, reliving his worst nightmare, in a way he’s in purgatory paying for his sins.
She sort of is, but only to the extent to which Silent Hill can make anything. She's more of a person, and has more personhood than most of the things in Silent Hill, but she's ultimately a tool the town creates so James can torment and punish himself. The implication of the Maria ending is that James will be back again, as he hasn't learned, accept, or atoned. Perhaps on future visits he'd meet Myra, Mariah, or Malandra
I follow the powerpyx guide and got the maria ending which I aim too in my first playthrough 😂 definitely going to get a different ending on my new game plus with a chainsaw tbh I think maria ending fit so well to my personality instead of just being sad & broken hey at least I got a new waifu definitely a plus 👌😂😂 & kudos to bloober to recapture that's atmosphere back just like re 2 remake cheers 🥂
I will admit, I didn't like this version of Maria from the start. But as I kept watching, I could tell that this version of Maria is toying with James. She secretly wants him to suffer for what he did. She acts all emotionless when she was in that jail but I could tell that she was torturing him. The only moment I felt sorry for her was just before she entered the "Lady of the Door". The way she was so scared to go in. She knew once she goes in, she becomes a part of James's torment.
Forgive me ,but this version of Maria actually looks old and weary , original one was younger looking. But okay,James could be the son of the SH 2 James

Maybe keep the calmness, but add a lil more spice with some flirting, sass, maybe give a lil more of those evil smirks.. Idk that's just me🤷🏻 I feel like the jail scene in this remake was perfect. She was calm but she was slightly creepy & slightly flirty
i think Maria is fine in the remake, in some ways better than original, but i really don't like how sceene at 19:30 looks. the voice actress delivered it well but there's just no emotion on her face. it's like she's chastising him for not putting down the toilet seat or something idk. it's kinda uncany watching her furiously screaming at him and not really seeing it on screen at all.
I think she overall does a great job, but the problem is just poor voice direction in some scenes (like the "ANYWAY?!" scene, the jail scene, and the letter reading). The VA herself is very talented, though. Especially meeting Mary up at the top of the hotel for the Maria ending. Her performance was heartbreaking.
I dont think they understand Maria section. Making Maria lively, sluty, actively flirting with james would delete the blurr line, thin line between Mary and Maria. In the OG even characters r confuse, sometimes Mary, sometimes Maria and the cutscene make Maria more like a specter or sth and then she is full flesh Maria In the remake, it is Maria, she is active, she is not just flirting, she sometimes come off slutty. More active, more direct, more lead. Like there is nothing confusing about Mary n Maria anymore
The Remake is basically identical to the original. Or you can just play the original. It's not like it has vanished or something. And people are praising this Remake. Go see the reviews.
Can they shut it with the Hollywood horror movie sounds? Zreng Zreng Zreng constantly, we get it, Maria is creepy, why not put a twilight zone bgm instead to really get it into the audience head?
19:30 my eyes were rolling out of their sockets 🤣 So you keep Maria in room to rest, you than proceed to clear 3 floors of normal hospital and 3 floors of hell hospital than you take elevator to the basement where you take ring and Maria casually walks in and starts tripping... what the actual fuck is this writing? 5 mins later she dies and sad music starts playing (bcs James liked her so much) 0/10 cartoon writing. (In remake characters still don't talk about anything that happens in the game.... like i just killed 50 nurses without face but lets just find elevator... ok... you seen those walls made out of human flesh?.. no? ok lets just walk around town)

Ela soa tão natural la, bem despretensiosa enquanto a do remake soa mais sarcástica. No mais, a do remake é a que será lembrada daqui pra frente, ela tem uma imagem muito forte e presença.
Okay, let's go point by point: the pacing is terrible, some sentence structure has no logic, the design is terrible (she is the character with the most noticeable errors in proportions), the personality does not fit the character. And to make statements like "this is 10 times more natural than the original", a person must literally have no eyes, no ears and have never interacted with people. This is not even a moment where a person did not understand the original, this is a moment where most fans of the remake enjoy the obvious slop, even regardless of the original
22:00 I love seeing this scene because it tends to my thoughts about Maria. She may not be a regular human (given that she wasn’t “born” by a mother like an average human would be, and that she appears alive after being killed multiple times) but she is nevertheless a real flesh-and-blood being. If she’s a hallucination, then how is she able to pick up the ring with her bare hands and gives it to James? Was it just floating mid-air?

The jail scene is actually pretty damn good in the remake, the original aside from the "i'm not your mary" line isnt particularly well done. The one scene that fumbled in the remake is the "ANYWAY??" one, which was terrible, the one part that looks and plays exactly like most people thought the SH2 remake would turn out to be before release.
No hate to the new actress. I think she did a great job, but the OG jail scene was just so well done.
9:39 i love how alluring she is.

Yeah i don't think that the actress in the remake was bad i think she was good but wasn't like the og which is why i prefer the og Maria
Theres a relationship between stoicism and that jawline
@@MC_Hammerpants what Jawline Maria looks perfect💯. And the actress did a pretty good job with her charracter however, I prefer the og maria but the new isn't bad at all
@@blackred9571 perfect if shes trying to have a big ass head and a man's jawline. That goes against the seductive temptress archetype we got in the OG

Hell no haha
Well Mary became ill bc of sile t hill. But maybe related to that desease that was a pandemyc bsck then.
Born from a wish...James' deepest secret wish

27:14 mary wedding ring meaning she is mary.
Damn there good
A ring is a ring. She's not Mary, it's just another trick.
Notice that it’s not on the ring finger though… just that little bit off of REALLY being Mary
@@Liam-mv9ziwhoa. Nice catch! I didn’t see that at all. The developers really put a lot of thought into her character

Mad props to the sound design team, James hand running down the rusty bar, or Maria touching his face. They nailed it!
26:00 this chage scene is weird, the way he is touching the bar and then he disappears.
This... what?
@@jeanzinc739 change of scene sorry
It can feel odd yeah. But I like to think playing with shot continuity can add to a scene. Sometimes you gotta sacrifice logic for art.
I personally quite like it, it's probably a mistake but it makes it look like Maria is talking directly to the player, it's more Shining like surreal.
01:10 I like James' "oh" reaction. so natural in his self-realization . This overall cutscene's dialogue and acting is also even more 10 times better than original for its more grounded acting.
The VA did fantastic! They all did!
19:40 They should have kept a pause from Maria before she shouts "Anyway!?"
yeah that is true
that whole scene is bad, there is 0 emotion on Maria's face
22:30 this scene alone enhances the time loop theory
So few complaints, and few positives.
The new scenes the VA for Maria delivers really well. Felt like she had more freedom.
1. The hallway scene she teleports behind James even though she was running ahead of him 0.5 seconds ago
2. Missing the dialogue of her crying for his help before being killed really takes away the tension.
3. James getting up so quickly afterwards, even with his body sway, looks too soon
Hm?
what, does this have to do with Maria in remake? I like the Maria in remake but og was better
I do like her new look but i miss her old outfit tbh 🥲
The new acting doesn’t quite hold a candle but to be fair the old va for Mary/maria is maybe one of the best voice acting performances of all time
I find The "Lakeview Hotel" a more fitting special place for two lovers but, since they cut off that line well, "Heaven´s Night" works for me on these days.
I like the new Maria. She's supposed to be hot but also James' age range. Mary's image corrupted by James' thoughts. I think she looks perfect.
@@sgttater2313 ok Grandpa
The "I'm not your Mary" line sounds a lot less venomous than it used to.
So , basically she is a creature of silent hill and she really didn't die in those sections and is just there to torture james by drying in same way that his late wife does , so he will return to silent hill? I say if james were gonna learn nothing form all that , so why not just pick maria early in game 😅
She felt real up until getting stabbed right before the elevator, the next one we see is a copy Silent Hill made for James.
@@Hydrocannon well , she died 3 times , i think no woman act that way with a man for the first time they meet.(life's so cooked for me...) And be like and sound like just his late wife.
Maria is so tempting😥
I love this remake but it’s suuuuper funny he immediately is in front of her in that cutscene she needs to die in lol. LOOOOVE the remake still btw
James's actor is AMAZING. I loved him in this and that's saying a lot
I absolutely think Salóme Gunnarsdóttir utterly crushed this performance, I’m fixated every time she’s on screen. She’s so cool and confident, it’s like her very nature is enticing James to stay in the dark-i mean obviously that’s a big part of her role here but it never feels forced, it never even feels constructed, it’s like they just got video of a woman who’s had a very interesting life and just fit it into this game
These moments especially:
2:49
7:09
18:47
22:25
And how she’s suddenly a little more stiff behind those bars as the line between Maria and Mary really begin to blur, and like Mary before her, she’s trapped yet acting like everything’s fine when she’s already dead:

Don't forget the alternate scene where instead of Mary sitting there it's Maria and she reprimands James over the confusion and he fights her instead.
The scene at 25:30 really gave me an uneasy feeling with the way she gaslights James and her general looks and mannerisms. the only thing i dont like about maria in the remake is her voice. in my opinion, even if her old dialog might have seemed less natural it was her VOICE that did it for me. i cant desctibe it but her last voice actress was just perfect for the character while this one is fine but something is missing. i loved when video game characters had very dramatic voices, like ada wong in the re4 original. now maria just seems sounds and looks like a girl you could see walking down the street which might be good but i guess its just not it for me

Maria is a being created by Silent Hill. She is not real.
Maria and all the other monsters aren’t real. They’re created by James’s subconscious. Maria specifically is created to torment James and remind him of his wife’s death over and over, reliving his worst nightmare, in a way he’s in purgatory paying for his sins.
She exists ONLY in James’s Silent Hill
She sort of is, but only to the extent to which Silent Hill can make anything. She's more of a person, and has more personhood than most of the things in Silent Hill, but she's ultimately a tool the town creates so James can torment and punish himself. The implication of the Maria ending is that James will be back again, as he hasn't learned, accept, or atoned. Perhaps on future visits he'd meet Myra, Mariah, or Malandra

Your argument is ridiculous. Clearly, people do have eyes and ears. They just don't have yours, so I guess their senses are faulty? Right, sure.
The reason for this is to completely confuse one's sense of reality, which results in a deeper form of mental imprisonment.
Maria is ugly now? your opinion
She is beautiful
It either the Gods loves Mary too much or she is related to the Gods. Maybe both
