That's exactly the point. He leaves with Maria, and she starts coughing, indicating that she has contracted the disease (Mary’s disease started the same way, with a cough). Eventually, he will end up killing Maria too. He is trapped in a loop.
They're both stuck in the denial and bargaining stage of grief. See when you play this game, both of them are supposed to come to terms with the fact that she was gonna die no matter what. They both didn't deal with grief properly. All the time, Maria is seducing James and guilt tripping him so that she could be with him, and the entire time he's searching for Mary. She's behaving as though she's not sick, and if you take her, then that's him thinking "hey may have not found Mary but here's a better Mary"... Who's in reality just Mary, again, sickness and all. and "if we do this again, maybe this time it will end differently".
@@Tortuga2223a The original wasn't even really acting, the actress actually got very emotional reading it. It's almost impossible to beat that. The new actress for the remake still did an excellent job though.
@@bashlyator That ending and the theme of the other, had me for real ask my wife the hard question of what she would want if she was Comatose, it was almost unbearable to ask her, but seeing the pain on display here, I knew in my heart I couldn't make that choice on my own.....i needed to know what she wanted even if it was a tough question to ask of the person I love most in this world.
The dialogue also does a good bit of lifting. James asks Mary to wait for him, because he's not ready to give up his life. Mary responds with "I've always been waiting for you," which suggests that she never wanted him to end his own life either. Plays a bit more with forgiveness and guilt, with the blacked out portion implying James finally gave Mary a proper "burial" by driving the car into the lake and exiting before it submerged.

Mary was diagnosed with an incurable disease that robbed her of the future she wanted with James - no children, no wider family, a lifetime snuffed out in an instant. Her lashing out at him was completely understandable. James tried to be supportive, but he's not infallible. Hearing that kind of dialogue from your partner, even knowing what they're going through, would tear anyone apart. He hated how her condition was turning her into someone else, taking away the woman he fell in love with, but his compassion also insisted that he keep trying to be there for her. His decision to smother her was born from both hatred and love, and if he had genuinely hated her he wouldn't have been so torn over what he did. He wouldn't have felt so empty and miserable that he would consider ending it.
I'm not married yet to the love of my life but we are together but I know what you mean. She's been the only woman that has been able to get me to express things I've kept under wraps for a long time. I went through something pretty traumatic and I won't go into it but I went into a disassociative state that lasted weeks. I was barely tethered to reality, I would sit still and not say a word for hours on end, staring out the window. It was her who brought me back, it was love that pulled me from the edge of the abyss. She looked at me and said "I knew you would come back" once I came out of it and I still tear up just remembering how she said it.
I love that in the in water ending we finally have in game confirmation that Mary's body has been in the backseat the whole time. The only other hint we had was the rebirth ending where he has her body with him, aside from the developer's telling us she was there after fan speculation. And Laura's cute drawing of Mary when he hands her the letter is so sweet.
It's kinda cool how the Stillness ending is kind of a remake of the In Water ending, having james get his ''forgiveness'' from Mary herself instead of the letter before driving into the lake. Of course it could be just a hallucination because he is even more broken than in the OG in water or maybe even Maria, but whatever it is, he uses it to justify what he is about to do, asking if she'll be waiting for him in the afterlife and responding she always was. Very Nice And the Bliss ending requires James to use the White Claudia (the famous silent hill drug that Lisa Garland was addicted to) in the hotel room, so he basically just uses it to imagine that he is still with Mary before the disease started, the empty look he gives implies he knows about the future, but ignorance is a Bliss
I interpret still as more James not having the motivation to unalive himself and more him basically accepting that he'll be a husk of himself until his natural death. And he asks if Mary to wait for him until then as he cannot move on.

@@valentds thats not true,in SH1 Harry gets abducted by the aliens and they do the same to james on original SH2,however it noted that harry is working with them(by distracting him so the aliens can stun him) and later on SH3 both harry and james and a alien are on heather's house waiting for her. Also in Shattered Memories in the ufo ending james is also there.
Remember how in the original it was Harry Mason who took James? What if "space james" traveled from his point of time to the remake james, the end scene feels like he just...took his place?
@forytcoments I just checked the old SH2 endings and there was nothing like this, there are all endings + 2 additional ones here. The difference is just some endings are redone in some other way and different dialogues, but the context is the same. UFO ending in original SH2 was James meeting SH1 MC, here they did it in really awesome way making the og and remake james meet together lmao.
Congrats to Bloober for his immense achievement. They did not only what nobody thought THEY could do, but what almost no other studio could have achieved with this game.
I really enjoy the Bliss and Stillness ending as I feel like it would work in the original game itself if it can have cutscenes like this. It really develop our POV of James a bit more.
I know allot of people shit on the james remakes orginal debut, but who ever did the mo-cap, voice acting, and graphics is so good, especially the water ending. He looks so tired
My favorite is the "Leave" Ending. Along the way, James fights his inner demons, recognizing and accepting his guilt. I know he still killed Mary, but we all know the context behind it, plus James already went through hell in Silent Hill to rehabilitate himself, that's worse than dying or being in prison, plus not everyone makes it, Neither Angela nor Eddie could get over it, so being in Silent Hill is almost a Death Sentensce. If he simply dies like in the ending In Water, it feels like if the game has been in vain, besides his guide and executor Pyramid Head, has not fulfilled his purpose. Let's remember that no matter which ending non NG+ you choose, James ends up defeating the twins Pyramid Heads, implying that he has had enough punishment, therefore it would be absurd for him to decide to commit suicide after that, and it would also be like repeating the same thing with Angela's character. Apart from that, what would have happened with Laura? She would have been left wandering through the town without direction or any adult to take care of her, which is why for me the ending of "Leave" is the best.
I believe that ending is way darker than you think it is. Laura’s not good. She’s evil. She’s a manifestation created by the town to trick and guilt James. Her leaving with James means that the town’s evil is following James home. This is signified by the creepy music at the end and then walking into thick fog.
Ended up getting In The Water ending and If I were really in James shoes that's the way I would go out. However that Stillness ending is the path I would love the most, At the end of the day we all got the good ending with how well this remake turned out.. 'BLOOBER.. you made me HAPPY!'

Nah man that’s the entrance to the graveyard from the beginning. James is leaving to go back to his car but he is taking the town with him. Super creepy.
In this ending, he hasn’t learned anything, so the town is forcing him into a vicious cycle until he accepts what he did, like in the Full Circle ending of SH Downpour.
The performance of James’ actor in “Stillness” is so good! When he turns to look at the letter it’s like he’s peaking over his cheek almost afraid to look, and I was holding my breath even though it’s not an action scene.😮
For anyone confused..Maria is the Mary James always wanted, she's not real,but James is the one responsible for her existence... she's a notion that lives rent free in his subconscious mind.. him fightin her represents his inner conflict to get rid of her idea , in the end, James realized the truth, and the only way to get rid of her idea is by facing it, fighting it once and for all. James been self reflecting throughout the whole game..he went through dinal (the fog), rejection of the truth (Shooting Pyramid behind the closet door) then realization then finally admitting to his actions and accepting the reality. Now he can move on and rest..
That kind of undermines Maria's character a bit, it's the most used and accepted explanation yes but there's a discussion that she could also be a manifestation of Mary because of her DLC Born From a Wish.
I was so disappointed they didn't use "Making Peace" during the conversation between James and Mary, as that's one of my favorite soundtracks ever, only for them to use it as James is walking away into the fog. I got chills

Maria isn’t “real” in the first place…and James abandoned Mary to further his relationship with someone who is just a manifestation of his selfish desires. He basically embraced the mental torture of Silent Hill and let it consume him. Because of this…he becomes emotionless and bitter…even stopping at the end to say his eerie trademark line “you should do something about that cough”. He is very much empty and cold hearted in this ending because he chose a lust monster instead of love.

james is dead , he wakes up from killing himself at the start of the game and you enter purgatory/dream world, that's why in the original the conversations sound so strange and un natural like that because it hints more about you not actually being awake/in the real world , its really interesting to me how many people think james is in a real town able to physically leave lol

I always considered the leave ending the real ending and know people consider the in water ending the real one. I appreciate anyone's choice for any end when they are all done well, I just think the leave ending fits because James is the outlier in the town he went around and got to witness the other inhabitants also going through what he did and got to learn from it. He saw both Eddie and Angela fail to come to terms with their guilt and trauma and be consumed by it. Also I am like who the hell is gonna take care of Laura she is just wondering the town homeless basically. All the endings are great and I appreciate that so much but that's my 2 cents, storywise and character wise there is no reason to have him go on this journey witness these other characters if he takes noting away from it.
Dude Laura’s not real. She was created by the town to trick and guilt James. The leave ending signifies that the town is leaving with James. Just listen to the creepy music at the end and the thick fog that they leave into.
@ that’s not true at all and that theory doesn’t make any sense. I’ve told people before how that theory is wrong. Laura was pulled into the town as well, the town did not create Laura, Laura was tied to Mary so she was brought into it as well. People think you need to have trauma to be brought into the town but you don’t the town just brings people into it with a strong mental connection to it in this case being Laura going through cancer treatment and her friend Mary disappearing she happens to be looking for her just as James does and the letters connect them. There is fogworld where people are brought into the dreamlike silent hill you don’t see anything here unless you have some kinda trauma as we can see from the characters the only time you see other peoples nightmares is in other world which the first game stated it’s create is by negative psychic energy. Laura never was in other world she was always in fogworld. Her meeting Eddie is a prime example of her being real, she also doesn’t see or hear Maria when she calls out to her in the hospital which if she heard she probably would react cause she sounds like Mary, this supports the idea that Maria is fake throughout the game and is a lot like how Angela sees her dad and brother and James doenst until he is in otherworld, Angela also can go throughout the town fine in fogworld because she doesn’t have the same demons James does. I mean the games literally paints this picture out very well for you with the assistance of having played the first game, this game while not connected to the first is still in the same universe and the town is the way it is because of the events of the first game this is just a side story, while silent hill 1 and 3 are the main story of why the town is messed up.

@ I always saw the original leave ending as like months later and they visiting her grave. But I doubt they go back to his car, he most likely dropped Laura off at wherever she is supposed to be it’s not like you can just go home with her and she is yours now, he went back to the car after had a burial for Mary etc. It’s crazy that now adays in Canada what James did is kinda legal not really, but it wouldn’t have been a issue because they now allow people with stage 4 cancer to be killed by a doctor if they want that, just so interesting how the times change.
Bliss ending is beautiful. I’m pretty sure anyone who experiences heartbreak longs to be put back in a moment that truly made them happy with their significant other
I love the change up to the UFO ending because since there is no Silent Hill one remake and it would probably be too difficult to get that original model that instead it's the OG James Sunderland model from the PS2 games. Greeting, the newer remake one that's just perfect meta.

Him disappearing from the chair might mean he got lost in that denial, since he never saw the end of that video either. So instead of accepting any fault, he does a complete 180 and pretends nothing ever even happened. Ignorance is a bliss..
So, White Claudia is actually a reference to Silent Hill 1 - this was the hallucinogenic drug that Michael Kaufman peddled to the townsfolk, including Lisa. It's implied that by taking the drug, James is submitting himself to become lost in a delusion rather than accept the death of his wife at his own hands. This is why this ending feels unhappy despite it appearing so cheerful.
If Bloober team weren’t legends before they certainly are now! What an achievement! Amazing game that will stand the test of time forever just like the original. Lovely art.
First of all, they weren't. Secondly, it's one banger in a sea of mediocrity, and to give them credit for its greatness isn't even fair considering they just had to copy Team Silent's homework. Did they copy it well? Absolutely. I'll even admit they made some improvements, but if they want to be considered legends, how about starting with something they wrote themselves that isn't just dumb shock value and doesn't run like shit on PC.
Gameplay wise. Its unreal engine game #29495. I like remakes and all but lets stop remaking everything in Unreal Engine please. It makes everything play the same...
I think In Water/Stillness is canon especially if you interpret James & all the other characters as already dead. In writing everything is intentional even when it seems like it's insignificant, so there's a thematic reason the first person James meets in Silent Hill (Angela) is inside a cemetery. When James "kills" Eddie, he looks at his shaking hands the same way he did in the beginning of the game. People think this is because of what he did to Mary but that would have already happened days before by that point, I think he's having that reaction then because he had just driven his car in the lake right before the intro exactly as he does in the In Water ending, so that reaction isn't for what he'd done to Mary but to himself. I also love the detail the developers made by making all the various bodies around town James, which could be his subconscious interpreting it that way. Also in the Leave ending, the final image is James & Laura seen leaving in the cemetery, possibly implying that they're moving on. Of course there are many ways the story & endings could be interpreted and that's what makes this game so great.
I think this was a really well done remake, it was weird to play a game that put me so much into the shoes of a character that I ended up looking at the knife several times throughout the game without even realizing, and that ended up giving me the "In Water" ending, which despite how sad it is, it feels the most cannon.
Maybe he KO'd himself after he did what he did to Mary. And him going to SH is his soul not getting peace for all the grief and pain he can't get over. (yes that is phrased weird, you know what YT is like)

I think it's clear that Bloober Team want to make Leave ending us their Canon ending. While in the original however it's In Water ending with all the signs and foreshadowing that were put by Team Silent. James even said the real reason he came to the town was to kill himself. The ending is more compelling in the og than in this remake. In this remake bloober also cut the final conversation between James and Mary in In Water.
He only says the real reason he came to the town was in the original In Water ending, there's no other place where he specifies that. The truth is: All of the endings here are technically canon, but there is NO true ending to Silent Hill 2.

I was in my early 20s when I played the original SH2. I remember feeling all emotional when I unlocked the first ending and hearing Mary’s letter to James for the first time. Never have I played another game that gave me that kind of feeling. Great writing.
Just wanted to say that I absolutlely adore the Rebirth ending from remake, it really feels like the ending from a Panos Cosmatos movie! Bloober also did a fabulous job with the In Water ending, much much more emotional as it should be. Kudos!|
Leaving ending makes the most sense to me. For one in all the other endings they just leave Laura there. Two its what Mary wants from James and it’s what she would still want even after he murdered her.
The Letter reading... i have to admit i prefere the original. Only the voice, the silence, nothing else. And just RAW emotion... And i know the voice actress could do it. It was a lack of direction id say.
Loving the game. The only gripe is how much better the original letter Voice Acting were. But it’s pretty easy to just re-mod in the old VA for that scene so, it’s all good. 9/10 Bloober. 🏆
I HATE that I got the In Water ending my first go. Like seriously? I decided to be cautious with how I use my health bottles and supplies in a fuckin' survival/horror game and I get punished with a "bad ending"? I'm actually friggin' mad lmao.

So, here's the thing. In Water used to be, widely considered, the canon ending. Even by Masahiro Ito himself. Cuz it was implyed, in SH4, that James never came back from Silent Hill. So neither of the other two could be canon. It was kinda of a fan favorite ending for almost everyone who played the original (me included. I went my way to get that ending purposefully in the Remake) so it was never considered a "Bad Ending" as SH2 never had one, unlike SH1 and 4 that were really clear with which ones were bad and good and 3 that only had one ending. So, as i see here, they canonized things like Mary's corpse in the backseat (that used to be just a Fan Theory) and Leave being the "true ending" by making that the final conversation with Mary only appears in that ending (In the original it happend in both endings, or maybe all three, i don't quite remember exactly).
To be honest, I healed myself all the time because I found the red marks around the screen annoying. Also I played a couple of souls games so I was good at dodging and I finished the game with 50 heading items or something like that.
Man... I just played this and I got "In Water" mainly because I inspected the knife and killed too many enemies, otherwise I would've gotten the better ending 😭😭

But Murakoshi (drama director of SH2 and Director/Writer of SH4) rewrote the canon in SH4, for example in a quiz in the elevator host said that Walter Sullivan's murders was a few years ago (for some reason SH2R did the same) but in SH4 Murakoshi changed it and Sullivan's murders took a place right before SH2 events. Same thing about Sullivan's hometown and SH2 ending cause when you examine some picture in room 302 Murakoshi says something like "Son and daughter-in-law of superintendent Frank Sunderland disappeared in Silent Hill a few years ago". So the final canon of Team Silent saga was like that.
So it's true, after all Mary's body is indeed in the backseat of the car since the beginning. You can see it at the start of the game and the Rebirth ending confirms it.
i hate the fact that they are downplaying the in water ending so much... the cutscene involving james and mary talking in the bed should've been in the in water ending too with slight variation like in the og silent hill 2,so the new player that got the in water ending, not have left been out to much and still got the same heartbreak with the new leave ending, and i like the new maria ending even thought they are cutting so many dialogue, because it shows that james doesn't care about mary anymore, even not reading the letter that maria gave to him

So, i looked at the knife once. This seems it was enough to cause me to get in the water, either that or i maybe should've healed far more but i felt i did a solid job with that. Looking up the info for in the water, i basically did everything that should've kinda avoided that ending, matter of fact i thought i was gonna get the Maria ending since i checked all the boxes there almost. *UPDATE* Ok, seems it was the opposite, excessive healing causes the ending , not spending too much time low hp. I swear in the original it was being low hp a lot that caused it.

May be that's why silent hill 2 is such an interesting story. Mary is already dead, she accepted death from James, and portrayed James as a good husband. It's James's inner world that is in turmoil and in need for clearance. He blames her, he blames himself, he cannot accept the death especially when he also harbors selfish intention in act of killing. I'm just glad there is an (true) ending which he accepts that he can be selfish and selfless to people he loves. And hopefully, he moves on.
The rebirth ending is so dope to me even the monster was shocked at what he said it, it gives me the same vibes as kratos defying the god harnessing the power of silent hill
It’s a call back to when Guy Cihi (OG James) spoke Japanese for the dog ending in OG SH2. In the dog ending James speaks the language of the devs. Bloober is a Polish studio, so.
Thank you for this. I don't get who has the patience to play a game like this twice in a row😅. Just walking, puzzles and filler combat. Fun the first time through but weird to have so many endings locked behind a full NG+ run in a 10+ hour game.. If it was closer to 2 hours I'd understand. (Yes I am aware the original had this too)

As someone who's married... Stillness is so poignant. Her tenderness being what sends James over the edge to tears was too real.
The dialogue also does a good bit of lifting. James asks Mary to wait for him, because he's not ready to give up his life. Mary responds with "I've always been waiting for you," which suggests that she never wanted him to end his own life either. Plays a bit more with forgiveness and guilt, with the blacked out portion implying James finally gave Mary a proper "burial" by driving the car into the lake and exiting before it submerged.

Mary was diagnosed with an incurable disease that robbed her of the future she wanted with James - no children, no wider family, a lifetime snuffed out in an instant. Her lashing out at him was completely understandable. James tried to be supportive, but he's not infallible. Hearing that kind of dialogue from your partner, even knowing what they're going through, would tear anyone apart. He hated how her condition was turning her into someone else, taking away the woman he fell in love with, but his compassion also insisted that he keep trying to be there for her. His decision to smother her was born from both hatred and love, and if he had genuinely hated her he wouldn't have been so torn over what he did. He wouldn't have felt so empty and miserable that he would consider ending it.
I'm not married yet to the love of my life but we are together but I know what you mean. She's been the only woman that has been able to get me to express things I've kept under wraps for a long time. I went through something pretty traumatic and I won't go into it but I went into a disassociative state that lasted weeks. I was barely tethered to reality, I would sit still and not say a word for hours on end, staring out the window. It was her who brought me back, it was love that pulled me from the edge of the abyss. She looked at me and said "I knew you would come back" once I came out of it and I still tear up just remembering how she said it.

I love that in the in water ending we finally have in game confirmation that Mary's body has been in the backseat the whole time. The only other hint we had was the rebirth ending where he has her body with him, aside from the developer's telling us she was there after fan speculation. And Laura's cute drawing of Mary when he hands her the letter is so sweet.

It's kinda cool how the Stillness ending is kind of a remake of the In Water ending, having james get his ''forgiveness'' from Mary herself instead of the letter before driving into the lake.
Of course it could be just a hallucination because he is even more broken than in the OG in water or maybe even Maria, but whatever it is, he uses it to justify what he is about to do, asking if she'll be waiting for him in the afterlife and responding she always was. Very Nice
And the Bliss ending requires James to use the White Claudia (the famous silent hill drug that Lisa Garland was addicted to) in the hotel room, so he basically just uses it to imagine that he is still with Mary before the disease started, the empty look he gives implies he knows about the future, but ignorance is a Bliss
I interpret still as more James not having the motivation to unalive himself and more him basically accepting that he'll be a husk of himself until his natural death. And he asks if Mary to wait for him until then as he cannot move on.
Makes sense since you can only get the Stillness ending in New Game+ BUT only if your previous run ended with In Water.

The difference is just some endings are redone in some other way and different dialogues, but the context is the same. UFO ending in original SH2 was James meeting SH1 MC, here they did it in really awesome way making the og and remake james meet together lmao.

My favorite is the "Leave" Ending.
Along the way, James fights his inner demons, recognizing and accepting his guilt. I know he still killed Mary, but we all know the context behind it, plus James already went through hell in Silent Hill to rehabilitate himself, that's worse than dying or being in prison, plus not everyone makes it, Neither Angela nor Eddie could get over it, so being in Silent Hill is almost a Death Sentensce.
If he simply dies like in the ending In Water, it feels like if the game has been in vain, besides his guide and executor Pyramid Head, has not fulfilled his purpose. Let's remember that no matter which ending non NG+ you choose, James ends up defeating the twins Pyramid Heads, implying that he has had enough punishment, therefore it would be absurd for him to decide to commit suicide after that, and it would also be like repeating the same thing with Angela's character.
Apart from that, what would have happened with Laura? She would have been left wandering through the town without direction or any adult to take care of her, which is why for me the ending of "Leave" is the best.
I believe that ending is way darker than you think it is. Laura’s not good. She’s evil. She’s a manifestation created by the town to trick and guilt James. Her leaving with James means that the town’s evil is following James home. This is signified by the creepy music at the end and then walking into thick fog.
Ended up getting In The Water ending and If I were really in James shoes that's the way I would go out. However that Stillness ending is the path I would love the most, At the end of the day we all got the good ending with how well this remake turned out.. 'BLOOBER.. you made me HAPPY!'

For anyone confused..Maria is the Mary James always wanted, she's not real,but James is the one responsible for her existence... she's a notion that lives rent free in his subconscious mind.. him fightin her represents his inner conflict to get rid of her idea , in the end, James realized the truth, and the only way to get rid of her idea is by facing it, fighting it once and for all. James been self reflecting throughout the whole game..he went through dinal (the fog), rejection of the truth (Shooting Pyramid behind the closet door) then realization then finally admitting to his actions and accepting the reality. Now he can move on and rest..

Maria isn’t “real” in the first place…and James abandoned Mary to further his relationship with someone who is just a manifestation of his selfish desires.
He basically embraced the mental torture of Silent Hill and let it consume him. Because of this…he becomes emotionless and bitter…even stopping at the end to say his eerie trademark line “you should do something about that cough”.
He is very much empty and cold hearted in this ending because he chose a lust monster instead of love.

I always considered the leave ending the real ending and know people consider the in water ending the real one. I appreciate anyone's choice for any end when they are all done well, I just think the leave ending fits because James is the outlier in the town he went around and got to witness the other inhabitants also going through what he did and got to learn from it. He saw both Eddie and Angela fail to come to terms with their guilt and trauma and be consumed by it. Also I am like who the hell is gonna take care of Laura she is just wondering the town homeless basically. All the endings are great and I appreciate that so much but that's my 2 cents, storywise and character wise there is no reason to have him go on this journey witness these other characters if he takes noting away from it.

Dude Laura’s not real. She was created by the town to trick and guilt James. The leave ending signifies that the town is leaving with James. Just listen to the creepy music at the end and the thick fog that they leave into.
@ that’s not true at all and that theory doesn’t make any sense. I’ve told people before how that theory is wrong. Laura was pulled into the town as well, the town did not create Laura, Laura was tied to Mary so she was brought into it as well. People think you need to have trauma to be brought into the town but you don’t the town just brings people into it with a strong mental connection to it in this case being Laura going through cancer treatment and her friend Mary disappearing she happens to be looking for her just as James does and the letters connect them. There is fogworld where people are brought into the dreamlike silent hill you don’t see anything here unless you have some kinda trauma as we can see from the characters the only time you see other peoples nightmares is in other world which the first game stated it’s create is by negative psychic energy. Laura never was in other world she was always in fogworld. Her meeting Eddie is a prime example of her being real, she also doesn’t see or hear Maria when she calls out to her in the hospital which if she heard she probably would react cause she sounds like Mary, this supports the idea that Maria is fake throughout the game and is a lot like how Angela sees her dad and brother and James doenst until he is in otherworld, Angela also can go throughout the town fine in fogworld because she doesn’t have the same demons James does. I mean the games literally paints this picture out very well for you with the assistance of having played the first game, this game while not connected to the first is still in the same universe and the town is the way it is because of the events of the first game this is just a side story, while silent hill 1 and 3 are the main story of why the town is messed up.

But I doubt they go back to his car, he most likely dropped Laura off at wherever she is supposed to be it’s not like you can just go home with her and she is yours now, he went back to the car after had a burial for Mary etc. It’s crazy that now adays in Canada what James did is kinda legal not really, but it wouldn’t have been a issue because they now allow people with stage 4 cancer to be killed by a doctor if they want that, just so interesting how the times change.

So, White Claudia is actually a reference to Silent Hill 1 - this was the hallucinogenic drug that Michael Kaufman peddled to the townsfolk, including Lisa. It's implied that by taking the drug, James is submitting himself to become lost in a delusion rather than accept the death of his wife at his own hands. This is why this ending feels unhappy despite it appearing so cheerful.

First of all, they weren't.
Secondly, it's one banger in a sea of mediocrity, and to give them credit for its greatness isn't even fair considering they just had to copy Team Silent's homework. Did they copy it well? Absolutely. I'll even admit they made some improvements, but if they want to be considered legends, how about starting with something they wrote themselves that isn't just dumb shock value and doesn't run like shit on PC.
Gameplay wise. Its unreal engine game #29495. I like remakes and all but lets stop remaking everything in Unreal Engine please. It makes everything play the same...
I think In Water/Stillness is canon especially if you interpret James & all the other characters as already dead. In writing everything is intentional even when it seems like it's insignificant, so there's a thematic reason the first person James meets in Silent Hill (Angela) is inside a cemetery. When James "kills" Eddie, he looks at his shaking hands the same way he did in the beginning of the game. People think this is because of what he did to Mary but that would have already happened days before by that point, I think he's having that reaction then because he had just driven his car in the lake right before the intro exactly as he does in the In Water ending, so that reaction isn't for what he'd done to Mary but to himself. I also love the detail the developers made by making all the various bodies around town James, which could be his subconscious interpreting it that way. Also in the Leave ending, the final image is James & Laura seen leaving in the cemetery, possibly implying that they're moving on. Of course there are many ways the story & endings could be interpreted and that's what makes this game so great.
I think this was a really well done remake, it was weird to play a game that put me so much into the shoes of a character that I ended up looking at the knife several times throughout the game without even realizing, and that ended up giving me the "In Water" ending, which despite how sad it is, it feels the most cannon.

While in the original however it's In Water ending with all the signs and foreshadowing that were put by Team Silent. James even said the real reason he came to the town was to kill himself. The ending is more compelling in the og than in this remake. In this remake bloober also cut the final conversation between James and Mary in In Water.

Also the game originally comes from Japan where suicide is considered honorable. And Bloober is western so yeah make sense imo.

I was in my early 20s when I played the original SH2. I remember feeling all emotional when I unlocked the first ending and hearing Mary’s letter to James for the first time. Never have I played another game that gave me that kind of feeling. Great writing.
Just wanted to say that I absolutlely adore the Rebirth ending from remake, it really feels like the ending from a Panos Cosmatos movie! Bloober also did a fabulous job with the In Water ending, much much more emotional as it should be. Kudos!|

I HATE that I got the In Water ending my first go. Like seriously? I decided to be cautious with how I use my health bottles and supplies in a fuckin' survival/horror game and I get punished with a "bad ending"? I'm actually friggin' mad lmao.

So, here's the thing.
In Water used to be, widely considered, the canon ending. Even by Masahiro Ito himself. Cuz it was implyed, in SH4, that James never came back from Silent Hill. So neither of the other two could be canon.
It was kinda of a fan favorite ending for almost everyone who played the original (me included. I went my way to get that ending purposefully in the Remake) so it was never considered a "Bad Ending" as SH2 never had one, unlike SH1 and 4 that were really clear with which ones were bad and good and 3 that only had one ending.
So, as i see here, they canonized things like Mary's corpse in the backseat (that used to be just a Fan Theory) and Leave being the "true ending" by making that the final conversation with Mary only appears in that ending (In the original it happend in both endings, or maybe all three, i don't quite remember exactly).
To be honest, I healed myself all the time because I found the red marks around the screen annoying. Also I played a couple of souls games so I was good at dodging and I finished the game with 50 heading items or something like that.

I got Maria ending however I have no clue how can there be multiple endings in it so anyone care to elaborate
Man... I just played this and I got "In Water" mainly because I inspected the knife and killed too many enemies, otherwise I would've gotten the better ending 😭😭
Leave is not the true ending according to the original SH2 devs. They said every original SH2 ending is canon including dog and ufo.

But Murakoshi (drama director of SH2 and Director/Writer of SH4) rewrote the canon in SH4, for example in a quiz in the elevator host said that Walter Sullivan's murders was a few years ago (for some reason SH2R did the same) but in SH4 Murakoshi changed it and Sullivan's murders took a place right before SH2 events. Same thing about Sullivan's hometown and SH2 ending cause when you examine some picture in room 302 Murakoshi says something like "Son and daughter-in-law of superintendent Frank Sunderland disappeared in Silent Hill a few years ago". So the final canon of Team Silent saga was like that.

So it's true, after all Mary's body is indeed in the backseat of the car since the beginning. You can see it at the start of the game and the Rebirth ending confirms it.

i hate the fact that they are downplaying the in water ending so much... the cutscene involving james and mary talking in the bed should've been in the in water ending too with slight variation like in the og silent hill 2,so the new player that got the in water ending, not have left been out to much and still got the same heartbreak with the new leave ending, and i like the new maria ending even thought they are cutting so many dialogue, because it shows that james doesn't care about mary anymore, even not reading the letter that maria gave to him

"Leave" looks as ominous as almost every other ending except 2 joke ones and "Stilness". We don't see them actually leave just fog getting thicker.
People don’t realize that Laura was created by the town so her leaving with James is very dark. Just listen to the creepy music for Leave and like you said the thick fog.

So, i looked at the knife once. This seems it was enough to cause me to get in the water, either that or i maybe should've healed far more but i felt i did a solid job with that.
Looking up the info for in the water, i basically did everything that should've kinda avoided that ending, matter of fact i thought i was gonna get the Maria ending since i checked all the boxes there almost.

Ok, seems it was the opposite, excessive healing causes the ending , not spending too much time low hp. I swear in the original it was being low hp a lot that caused it.

Now we need a silent hill 1 remake.
May be that's why silent hill 2 is such an interesting story. Mary is already dead, she accepted death from James, and portrayed James as a good husband. It's James's inner world that is in turmoil and in need for clearance. He blames her, he blames himself, he cannot accept the death especially when he also harbors selfish intention in act of killing. I'm just glad there is an (true) ending which he accepts that he can be selfish and selfless to people he loves. And hopefully, he moves on.
The rebirth ending is so dope to me even the monster was shocked at what he said it, it gives me the same vibes as kratos defying the god harnessing the power of silent hill
I had the rebirth ending in the original once i remember..

It’s a call back to when Guy Cihi (OG James) spoke Japanese for the dog ending in OG SH2. In the dog ending James speaks the language of the devs. Bloober is a Polish studio, so.

Thank you for this. I don't get who has the patience to play a game like this twice in a row😅. Just walking, puzzles and filler combat. Fun the first time through but weird to have so many endings locked behind a full NG+ run in a 10+ hour game.. If it was closer to 2 hours I'd understand.
