Shogun: Lord Toranaga Reveals Lord Suga And Lady Genjiko's Children And Returns Them To Parents

- Shogun: Lord Yoshi Toranaga (Toshiro Mifune) was testing his son and daughter-in-law’s loyalty, because someone accused Lord Yoshi Suga (Masashi Ebara) of treason, and his wife, The Lady Genjiko (Setsuko Sekine) was with him. As a test, Lord Toranaga ordered the couple to kill their children, which are Toranaga’s grandchildren. Lord Suga obeys and searches for the children, but he cannot find them. Then, Lord Toranaga reveals the children, and they come and sit and play on Toranaga’s lap. He then returns the happy children to their relieved parents.
Shogun, The Millions-Of-Copies Sold Novel, was written by James Clavell. The Masterpiece Television Mini Series was Produced by NBC and Paramount Studios, Directed by Jerry London, Screenplay by Eric Bercovici, Director Of Photography Andrew Laszlo, Production Executive Frank Cardea, with Production Designer Joseph Jennings. Shogun starred: Richard Chamberlain (as Pilot-Major John "Anjin-San" Blackthorne), Toshiro Mifune (as Lord Yoshi Toranaga; Lord Of The Kwanto; Lord Of The Eight Provinces; Chief General Of The Armies Of The East; Head Of The Clan Of Yoshi; President Of The Council Of Regents; Shogun), Yoko Shimada (as The Lady Toda Buntaro Mariko), Frankie Sakai (as Lord Kashigi Yabu), Alan Badel (as Jesuit Priest, The Father Visitor Dell’Aqua), Michael Hordern (as Friar Domingo), Damien Thomas (as Jesuit Priest, Father Martin Alvito), John Rhys-Davies (Portuguese Pilot Vasco Rodrigues), Vladek Sheybal (as Portuguese Captain Ferriera), George Innes (as Ship Hand Vinck), Leon Lissek (as Portuguese Jesuit Father Sebastio), Yuki Meguro (as Samurai Warrior, Kashigi Omi), Hideo Takamatsu (as Lord Toda Buntaro), Hiromi Senno (as Consort Usagi Fujiko), and Nobuo Kaneko (as Lord Ishido Kazunari). Many people were involved in the making of this classic masterpiece. There was an A-List Cast, an A-List Director, an A-List Musical Score from Maurice Jarre, and A-List production quality with amazing sets and intricate costumes, detailed for that time era. Narration by the famous and powerful voice of Orson Welles.

Lord Toranaga and Blackthorne - two of greatest characters I've seen in my life.
I love this scene in the book. Sudara is soaking wet after having searched for everywhere for his children in order to kill them as his father ordered. His wife is pale but composed. The door slides back and a nurse brings in the children. They bow formally to their grandfather, except for the youngest who has to be assisted to do so by the nurse. They then break into smiles and rush into their grandfather’s arms.
Look at Sudara's face, he realized the power his Father has and that his Father WILL USE IT!
This cast was put together so well. Can anyone else play the role of Lord Toranaga other than Tishiro Mfune? ❤

We feel that Toshiro Mifune, Richard Chamberlain, Yoko Shimada, Frankie Sakai, Damien Thomas, Alan Badel, John Rhys-Davies, Hiromi Senno are just an amazing cast of enormous talent that it will be near impossible for anyone to come close to these actors and this production quality. Lord Suga's actor "Masashi Egawa" is currently Japanese voice actor of Tom Hanks.
I was waiting for this 2nd part of the scene. So sweet to see Lord Toranaga with his grandchildren

Wonder why they changed the children from the book: there are 3 girls and a baby son .. the latter’s birth, thru his mother’s bloodline, was a key political moment..

I would love to know what the treats were that Lord Toranaga gave to his grandchildren. Would also love to know what he said to them.
I think it was Mochi, a treat made of glutinous rice flour, sometime it has crushed peanut in the center.

Sudara, not Suga!
It may have been Lord Sudara in the novel: I will double check. However, in the Shogun 1980 TV Miniseries, Lord Toranaga's son's name is Lord Yoshi Suga, played by Masumi Okada. @@theshogunchannel yes, in the book they were Sudara and Genjiko indeed. Never noticed its different in the movie.
