Defensive behavior. Got near either the nest or it's youngster. They fake being injured, to distract/fool a predator away. (See: the wing-flutter against the ground. Sandpiper's do exact same thing.)
He's faking a wing injury and running in the opposite direction of his nest to lure you away from there. It's a common tactic. Very clever birdie. Lovely display of acting, Oscar worthy!
at my workplace there was a regular sparrow that also acted this way when i walked near its nest. it acted injured and made a lot of noise to lure me away. i was like 'wtf, a sparrow is doing this?!' and i thought 'naaah, sparrows don't do that. maybe it really IS injured?' and so i walked towards it to see if I can help it. and it lured me away about 20 feet or so and then flew off.
What I find most cute about animals like this, is that they will never realize that humans don't know there's a nest nearby until they start doing that in front of them (basically its counter-productive), and even then we aren't interested in touching the nest in particular so the whole drama in act is unnecessary. They're so innocently silly.
That is actually the male! He’s fantastic at playing injured. They will literally “walk” you way away from the female and the nest! This shot was zoomed in. Had I been this close the male would have flown at me!! There was more than this one killdeer in the same area doing the same things ! I promise this bird was in no way injured or we would have taken it for help 💚
@@Hotchpotchsoup when it's not screaming at the top of its lungs like this, its usual call sound is an "eee-EEE! eee-EEE!". Many claim it sounds like it's saying "Kill-Deer!", so it's named after that. It's almost like a Pokémon in that regard, yelling its own name all day!
If you ever see one of them acting like this, watch your step so you don’t accidentally step on their nest, or, better yet, go where the bird is leading you to avoid it entirely.
I remember a sparrow doing this once. I was mowing down the lawn and suddenly a bunch of baby birds ran into tall grass. I tried to flush them out so I could keep going, but the mama bird started acting all strange. She started chirping loudly and faked a broken wing to lure me away from her babies. After I had checked the grass, I decided to "fall" for her bait and follow her. Sure enough, she hopped away a few times before taking off for good. No birdies were harmed that day and I got to cut the grass having experienced something wonderous.
I love watching the babies when they start walking. They look like little puffballs on stilts. And they have trouble walking in long grass so will run along in front of your car instead of just moving off the driveway. Have had generations of Killdeer come back each year.
A farmer I know had some killdeer nest in one of her small crop areas (I think she was growing cabbages?) and she had to just completely ignore that area for a while because every time she tried to do her work there, the birds would do exactly this and she didn't want to stress them out
Next to Timberdoodles these are probably some of my favorite birds. They're adorable but it's also sad knowing they are never going to realize we're not an IMMEDIATE threat. In fact they could reasonably only scream at us when we get close to their nest and most people would respect that and walk around them. But this is the tactic that works for every other predator so fake that broken wing little Killdeer, you're doing a bangup job.
@@sluttyMapleSyrupI would not have known what a Timberdoodle was without your comment, so thank you for saving me a question. It might be because there are no Woodcocks in my area (as far as I know).
I actually stumbled across one of these while in a program that visited a local farm. My group didn’t even notice the nest and I almost stepped on it. Luckily i noticed it and let them know that I found it. Close call if you ask me.
Killdeers lived behind our house when I was a kid. We'd be out shooting BB guns (at bottles & cans) and when we would disturb a nesting Killdeer, they would always do this dance and sing that little wounded tune. Many times, they would stick up one wing as if it was broken. We didn't harm them and always left the area. Fascinating little bird.
Well said and thank you for the video of the bird being such a good parent, screaming obscenities at anything walking near their nest, just sitting near the road on the ground! Among rocks, I could not even identify the nest site and four eggs until the parent was standing on it, and when she was still, I lost her again, until she moved. Excellent blending into the background!
It’s actually good to follow the bird. It knows where it’s nest is and by allowing it to lead you away from the nest there is no risk of crushing the bird’s nest on accident.
RUN, RUN, RUN AWAY! You sir/mam are about to perish at the beak of a VERY angry momma. I pity you and will see you in the next life. She is so damned cute, gotta love a mom defending her young. Great video, thanks for sharing from a couple of years in the future.
We had one of these in the base I was stationed it, it was nearby a helipad we were cleaning up for future use, a group of us cleaned it up and the other were practicing dnc for a future competition. While we were marching we accidentally ran into a killdeer and nearly stepped all over it's nest, thankfully one of our men who were in the front stopped when they noticed the bird screaming at us and our Sargeant found that it had a nest nearby. It was a mess though bunch of us bumped into each other and we were many.
Had these birds out on the golf course I worked at always do this. Luckily it told me where their nests were so I could flag them so our equipment; particularly our mowers, could avoid them.
I remember in elementary there was one that would lay her nest on the playground somewhere where the mulch was and the teachers would put traffic cones around the nest and I would just sit next to the nest staring at them while they incubate
When i was a kid, my brother and i saw this act but didnt know that it was a protective tactic so we assumed momma was actually hurt... And took all the little babies home with us to raise them 😢 (animal loving ADHD kids, bless us). Momma followed us two blocks to our house and yelled at us until OUR mom got home and REALLY yelled at us 😅😅😅. The babies were safely returned to the nest and momma was happy 😀 Yet another reason im grateful for the internet - if we'd had smartphones when we were younger, we could have just looked it up and left the babies alone.
He/she wants all attention because the nest is in that area. This bird species lay their eggs on the ground, and distracting potential enemies is their only defense.
My favourite bird, these guys are con artists! For those who don't know, Killdeer are marsh birds that nest on the ground near water. If a predator comes too close, they put on this display and fake a broken wing (as seen by the bird flapping its wings without actually flying). If the predator advances, the bird will fly away clumsily and fake a fall a few dozen feet away. The direction it flies will always be away from the nest, repeat this cycle a few times and the predator has followed the bird far away from its home. Then it'll just fly off, leaving the threat far behind, and the nest safe from danger. By far one of the most clever displays of evolution I have ever seen. TLDR: these birds use themselves as bait to protect their nest. Luring the predator away without letting it catch them.
We used to get these birds nesting/laying eggs in our yard nearly every year when I was a kid. Step even 20 ft in their nests direction and it'd be that noise 😆
