Thanks for dropping by Kat. These are popular here where I live. I just looked into what seems to be popular in the US and it looks like it's the Vintage Coleman 513A Catalytic Heater 3000/5000 BTU. I may have to get one of those. LOL Have yourself a good week. We are to get snow here tonight, it's cold and damp right now.
@@KatInTheNorth Mid October brings the low single digits temps. I've seen it snow on the third week of October and stay till spring {not normal} Snow in mid November does stay till spring here. 6 years ago I have video of our family playing lawn Croquet on Christmas day { plus 15C - 60F } Totally not normal ! We normally would have 3 feet of snow everywhere. I have a picture of me on the 20th of April standing in my driveway and the snow banks are 7' high. LOL Picking tomatoes one day shoveling snow the next LOL Thanks for dropping by Kat.
Nice assortment... I only have one and was intimidated lighting it the first time..lol Need to dig it out and play with it some and familiarize myself with it in case it is needed...
I have a none insulated garage and ventilation, well lets say NOT a problem. LOL I light up the red 3000 in the winter, 30 minutes later and the shop is nice and comfortable to work in. Just can't light them indoors! Sometimes the flames are a foot high before it settles down.
I remember my parents using those heaters in their Volkswagen Beetle in the early 70’s hahaha air cooled engine in the back lol. I had a couple that looked quite a bit different but were Colman not sure where they are anymore. I went looked up ones I had they just called 5000 or vintage 1977 avocado green. Bunch of them on e bay
Matt I grew up in the 60s and 70s camping with my parents, these Coleman heaters were lite every night to take out the dampness and heat up our beds for the night. For me the looks, the smell and the sound of the lanterns, that's what camping was all about. I did notice that there are a few different styles out on the market. Thanks for dropping by my friend. Have yourself a good week.
The little Red one 3000 BTUs is a 518E. The new and older ones are the 3000-5000 BTUs they are the 513K. The last one that's a 5000 BTU and its a 516K. These all run on White Gas. Thanks for dropping by Michael. Have yourself a good weekend.
Well Sir, I think I got lucky, I found a Gold 5000/8000 btu heater in its box with a pack of matches with two used.. so I know its been lit.. January of 71 on the bottom. It is pristine. What do you think?
Yes what a lucky find for sure. You do have a gem, enjoy it. I have yet found one in mint shape, maybe one day I will. Thanks for dropping by and leaving your comment.
We've used these heaters in our tent and tent trailers during the 60s, 70s and 80s, its what I grew up with when camping with my parents. How it was used. It was placed in our tent about an hour prior to calling it a night to take out the dampness and warm up our sleeping bags. Then once everyone was tucked in for the night the heater was turned off. The heater would remain off till it was time to get up for coffee and breakfast. This is when the heater would be ignited once again to take the dampness out of the air and warm up our tent. We always had proper ventilation when using any of our gas heaters, white gas and or propane and even a small wood stove. Since the 90s I've added a FIRST ALERT Carbon Monoxide Alarm to my setup {Safety First} I think I'm on my fourth one now. If I were you, I would setup your tent and place your gas heater in it along with a Carbon Monoxide Alarm and perform yourself a test on your setup. Let the heater run for HOURS and see what your Carbon Monoxide Alarm picks up. Only than will you know for sure. Always do your own test with your own equipment, trust your own confidence and don't rely on other peoples input. Thanks for dropping by. I hope I gave you something to work with.
@@danielcharbonneau222 thank you for your input, I think with how much heat it gives off I’ll have to have a window open in my canvas tent anyway. I did start it up, and I didn’t smell any fumes, or anything. I’m pretty happy about it.
These heaters once light the entire head glows. I'll put together a short video together lighting it up and seeing the wick glow at night. the 513K 3000 - 5000 and the 3000 do react a bit different.
@@GreenLegendRan OK right now its 00:35 Dec 9th I'll get right back to you in the next 48 hours. I'll do a light up and burn (video) and post you the link. It sounds like your main wick maybe giving you the problem.
@@GreenLegendRan Here is a quick video I just put out for you. Hope it helps. You can buy replacement domes for these heaters. Check out ebay. ua-cam.com/video/RBfEJkUh2UQ/v-deo.html
First off, which one are you having problems with. I have three different ones. The 3000BTUs, the 3000 - 5000BTUs and the 50000BTUs {with proper ventilation} These are good in-regards to warming up a tent, camper or small sheds and will take out the humidity / dampness in the early mornings when you want to sleep in a bit or start making breakfast / coffee. Just to give you an example check out the Mr Heater. These come in 3800BTUs, 9000BTUs 11000BTUs and the big one is 18000BTUs these ones run on the 1 pound propane bottles. These through off good heat.
Lol, I gotta ask: WHY do you have so many units? I am all for keeping a primary, secondary and backup on lanterns, stoves and heaters on long trips. Beyond that, however...
Hahahahaha I collect as a hobby. So you don't want to know how many canvas tents, knives, Military canteens, mess kits I own. That alone will make you scratch your head. LOL Thanks for dropping by Justin. Have yourself a great day.

Are they able to run on kerosene or b100 biodiesel?

On the 518 that you use in your tent once fully warmed up is the whole head supposed to glow a bit or just the edges?

The center of my head doesn't glow. I wonder if that means it's fouled up. I'd say th top 30 degrees of it are probably not glowing.
