    When I was younger our family had a garden. It was five acres and we grew all kinds of vegetables. This garden was our main food source. I appreciate your use of natural pest repellents however there wasn’t much information about natural pest control. So we had to use sevin dust. It worked on all types of plants. I don’t know the research on it but, we didn’t suffer and effects from it. I am so glad that you are sharing a different type of pest control. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing this information.

    Your garden is doing well! I have bees so I don't use any pesticides. I started soaking orange rinds in water for 24 hours and spraying it on my squash. So far, no squash bugs and the ants don't seem to like it much either.

    Neem oil works well for most bugs. It’s organic and bugs don’t like the odor. You have to apply it again after it rains (easiest with a pressurized sprayer) but it works well.

    Hi Nina. My wife and I are planting today. We are somewhat behind this year but our garden beds are filling up. We have had problems with too much rain - wet clay soil is a pain to till. And of course, pests are always a problem. We had an infestation of spider mites as well as leaf miners on the cabbage I started. One suggestion: we've experimented with various types of zuchini and by far the best is the the Cassia hybrid F1. I order from a Canadian seed company, but they should be available in the U.S. as well. The 'fruits' are solid and can be picked larger than most types and still have good texture and flavour. Based on our experience, and the comments from people I give extra zukes to, this type is a definite winner! Happy gardening! ....Ray

    Nina, your garden looks terrific, especially with the restart!👌
    You are quite right about the insect issue, while they are not really a problem for the potatoes, they are definitely a problem for all of your leafy greens, broccoli, and other leafy/stalk type plants.
    Be careful not to over spray because those leaves still need to absorb sunlight and complete the photosynthesis process for healthy plants and their developing produce.
    You have applied your knowledge and newly acquired information well.👍
    One thing you can do to add moisture retention is add about 30 percent sand (any kind, mason, beach, playground, even loamy type soil)
    Especially with the peat, the sand will reduce that natural binding which makes it hard to take water and adds a more porous, moisture friendly soil. The perlite helps quite a bit, but the sand really slows down the peat and allows the soil to accept watering more easily on hot dry days and still provides good drainage, especially during the freak summer storms.😉
    Happy growing!🤙

    Your feeder tube bottles reminded me of something I've seen that I've wanted to try; mini worm farms right in the garden. I'm sure you've seen people who have a composting worm far in a garbage can and collect the juice (might be called "worm castings") to put on their garden. One gardener I saw in the Australian rain forest used about 12 to 16 inch long 6 or 8 inch diameter PVC pipe sections. At one end she drilled some holes in the first 6 inches of the pipe. She buried the pipe in the garden vertically with that 6 inch section with the holes under ground. Then she put compost and earth worms in the upper part of the pipe. So when the worms make that good juice stuff it is automatically dispersed into the garden. all she had to do was add more compost into the tubes occasionally. I wanna try that.

    • @barryoakes5976
      @barryoakes5976 2 роки тому

      That’s actually not “worm castings”. That liquid run off is not a wise idea at all.. it’s a great way to introduce e~coli to your food garden

My wife has been on me about putting back some taters. I still have 14 jars left to use. I pulled all my jars into the house during the Christmas "hard freeze" It took me a minute! 79 quarts of tomatoes, green beans, pasta sause and 18 pints of salsa. It’s actually a myth. Watering at any time of the day will not burn your plants …… look it up. (Just more sensible and effective to water when cooler so less evaporation). But ……. Mulch mulch mulch and cover any bare soil with plants and specifically ground cover plants and straw and grass clippings and leaves etc etc

      @@jackstone4291 no, you have no idea what you’re talking about. Listen simple Jack, water magnifies light. You don’t want beaded up water on your leaves during the peak of the suns power. We’re talking about a foliar spray, not a watering. I know more about plant science than most botanists. Do you use yucca with your foliar applications? Do you even know what yucca is? How about VPD? What amino acids do you utilize? What’s their effect on the plants. What do the different nutrients do to the plant? Name me the mobile nutrients. How about the immobile nutrients?
