Totally agree with you! It fits so well as is & once you start tweaking you can accidentally ruin it! Loafers & a denim jacket thrown on top would be gorgeous
As an experienced knitter, that knit vest is 100% handmade. 🙌🏼 if you buy some wool wash, it can help to soften the wool a bit. Eucalan is my go to. Soak in lukewarm water ~30 mins and lay flat to dry (on a bed or something is perfect).
@@CarrieDayton yay glad I could help!! Also after you soak it make sure you press out the water in a towel, don’t wring it! Glad to see you score such a great find, you look amazing girlie! ❤️
Carrie ... here's a helpful tip for thrifting when you're "on the go" ---- some years ago my hubs and I took his parents to England for a couple of weeks and took them all around --- we all had such a good time. About a week in London, a cottage in the Cotswolds as a base for a week, a few proper British hotels .... Anyway, my mother-in-law, who is a teeny-tiny little woman (has a hard time breaking 100 lbs on a good day) decided she didn't want to lug all her luggage back home. She boxed up her dirty laundry (she'd packed pretty thoroughly and had purchased a few items, so she had plenty of clothes to wear) and a few souvenirs (she buys a little something for EVERYone) and MAILED it back home!!! Her luggage was oodles lighter, the cost wasn't even as much as checking an extra bag and it took a little longer, but her stuff was dropped off on her front porch when she got home. Genius.
Traid is probably the 'trendiest' charity shop chain in London, and I'm assuming there was so much summer stuff in there because you caught them on a big sale week - they do pretty regular sale periods where pretty much everything is £3-4, often to clear out the backlog! I've found some gems in there!
I know it's too late now but if you find prints when you're thrifting while travelling buy them and redonate the frame (or ask if you can only buy the print) and roll the prints up so you can get them home. You can get a tube at a post office to store in or a thick largr envelope to keep them flat. X
Idk if you have yet, but you totally need to go thrifting in downtown Ventura!! It’s basically a whole street of thrift shops, vintage shops, charity shops, etc. and it’s so much fun!! I went a few months ago and found so many cute things 😊
@@wendehart9377 Right?! I'm from Santa Barbara and our thrift stores are tiny and never really have good selections so Ventura is a lot of fun in comparison lol
Would love to see a video where you get that brown dress and the plaid dress (plus whatever else has been on your to-tailor list) to the tailor! So fun to see the vision come to life.
Eeeek! I'm originally from England but moved abroad and it's so lovely to see you looking at our charity and vintage shops with fresh eyes! Makes me miss them a little, although the thrift markets where I live now are on another level 🥹 Glad to see you enjoying your trip!! 🥰🥹
For the brown dress, try taking a big safety pin and bunching it in the middle of the bust. Kind of cinch it down a bit so it's more of that sweetheart neckline. Hopefully that makes sense and works. I love the idea of getting things tailored but I NEVER get around to actually doing it.
Soooo I've been looking for a winter coat for months & couldn't find anything that didn't cost a fortune... so after binge watching every single one if your thrifting videos I finally went thrift shopping for the first time in forever & found the most amazing GEM of a wool coat (for so cheap!!!) as soon as I stepped foot in the store 😍 I've always thought thrift stores in New Zealand kind of suck but I think I may have been converted now ❤️
F&F is Florence &Fred from Tesco(supermarket) 😁 .love what you found in the charity shops. I think London charity shops are more expensive than the ones near me!
I am obsessed with the strawberry tank and the corduroy jacket, and I think the plaid dress has so much potential! Its wild that you found that Arizona Eagles top all the way over there too. Loved getting to see what charity shopping in the UK is like!
You and Alexa are my favourite youtubers so to see you together in the UK is great to me! The next time you’re in England please visit Leeds, it’s my hometown and I manage a vintage store there. There’s so many cool vintage stores and soooo many charity shops you’d love it !
When I was in London, I had a lot of luck in Shoreditch and Dalston when it came to thrifting/charity shops. Shoreditch was definitely more curated/themed/cool, but Dalston had some classic American thrifting vibes (they also had a Traid but they weren't open yet when I went).
I wonder if that brown dress should be off the shoulder and slide down. It looks like there's a hemline across you chest and I think it should be under the bust.
The cheapest charity shops I find are Barnardos and also cancer research, love from the uk 🇬🇧 and yes you have to literally go to 10 charity shops to find the goods , root like mad, look through all racks and all sizes and be prepared to look at mens section also ✌🏻
So much fun! I am traveling vicariously through these videos. Hoping to visit London one day! Love the idea of turning that Christmas dress into a 2-piece. And that strawberry tank is adorbs!! Looking forward to more videos!!
I literally gasped out loud when I saw you in the red dress! I was hoping you got it. I didn't notice anything weird about the chest. It was made for you!!
The red/French dress, the only thing I would do is cut off the ties and put a kind of "masculine"-looking leatherish belt instead. The brown polka dot one could probably be taken in at the seam between the sleeve and the bodice to get rid of the excess fabric. I love the speckled vest!😍 Also love the pig in the background ☺!
You have to check out Brick Lane Sunday market next time you come to London!! ❤️ Charity shopping for plus size is terrible most of the time. You should also try going to a car boot sale next time you come :)
@17:54 That red dress is GORGEOUS on you, and it actually gives me late '40s / early '50s vibes (even though I know it's much newer than that). Don't alter it! If you wore that with your hair (which is long and very versatile, style-wise) done in a '40s or '50s style, it would be amazing. And if you find a good photographer, you could have a fun vintage-style photo shoot.
London charity shops are very different to a lot of other places in the UK. I used to find quirkier pieces when I lived there, but they’re often very picked over, especially in the trendier areas like Notting Hill, Brick Lane and Camden, and the good stuff is likely to end up being sold at a higher price in a vintage shop. Since I’ve moved to small town Cornwall, the charity shops have completely blown me away. They’re so well stocked they have to turn donations away. Amazing if you like a bit of a grandmacore/cottagecore vibe too.
My favorite duo. I hope you had lots of fun! Love the polka dot dress and the plad dress. Just adjust the waistline I love Britt style And love Irish green That red floral dress is not grandmaish, just add some boots and statement earrings and a leather jacket done! How ironic to find a Arizona piece in Londen. Thank you for sharing X
I grew up in Cambridge and live in London now so this was so fun to watch! Jemporium in Cambs was where we spent every Saturday in High school. Hope you had a lovely time :)
Hi Carrie, I don't comment often, but wanted to say I absolutely love following you and you are an inspiration. I'm in UK and have absolutely loved watching your trip here. I have SO MANY thrifted pieces that are Mark's & Spencer's 😁 I love a full button through 90's dress like the red one you found. I don't think the neck line is granny looking. You look gorgeous in it. I accessorise mine with lots of necklaces and grunge it up with Dr Martens and a denim jacket. A waistcoat for a real 90's feel would look cute too. Bea ❤
F&F is the clothing brand of the Grocery Store Tesco. Loving your England videos! Charity Shopping has definitely improved over here but it’s nothing like we see in the US.
Lol when you were appreciating M&S, actually so true, they are very trustworthy for well made clothes (mostly old ladyish but like in a quality way - great for basics), stuff like F&F is another supermarket brand but I often see ppl buying Target clothes in those videos so I guess it’s not that different. Also the Miss Honey dress is gorgeous and there’s nothing wrong with the neckline tbh!
I think I love the red dress and the handmade vest the most, great finds! If the brown polkadot dress has a facing you can gather that slightly with thread and needle so that the dress fits better and not be so gape-y.
Ahh, looks like such a great time just going down the row of shops! So nice when they are that close together! So jealous! **side note - Alexa was for sure Ms Sunshine today!! She’s acting exactly how I would be if I was in London thrifting with you - on cloud 9!
Before you take the brown dress to a tailor, I'd try this: It looks like there's a single stitch going down the center of the bodice (gathering it). I'd remove that stitch then sew up that same line with a needle and thread (you can easily do it by hand). Stitch all the way from the waist band to the top and use relatively large stitches. Don't cut the thread or tie it off yet. Put the dress on and adjust that gather so that it fits you, then tie off the thread. It should only take about 15 minutes.
That peplum top might be cute with the white skirt! And for a pop of color, the hunter green shacket thing? I'd have to see it all together but I feel like it'd be good 😊
F and F is Florence and Fred which is Tesco supermarket's designer line. Maybe add a couple of lines of shirring elastic on the top of the browny red spotty dress to shrink it in to fit you a bit closer?
My first thought too. Maybe too warm for LA but would be so so pretty! Also you can always just get a tailor to make skirts out of dresses that fit weird on top.
I cannot tell you how TRIPPY it is to see you guys walking through Cambridge. I'm from the UK and went to uni there til 2019 then moved to New Mexico 2 days later...I miss it!
