Bead is important, but it works only with good design underneath. JZ has impeccable design, that is, his drawing skills and scene-understanding skills are second-to-none. He never paints what he sees - he always re-arranges, puts more interesting details. That is where most painters fail; their design and drawing skills are poor. They don't draw, they don't challenge themselves in solving design issues. And as a result, they are never able to deliver an interesting watercolour, even when proper painting techniques are used.
I sadly agree. It’s a gift few of us have.
Yeah Every great painter says drawing is 90% of painting. Look at all the goat's, Sargent, Zorn, JZ here, their drawing and sketches will rival any traditional drawing artist. Which is also why I hate it because I'm learning to draw right now and all I want to do is paint. But I can already see that my increasing knowledge of 3d drawing and spatial form would help elevate my painting later on.
On point. I always tell people to draw. It is obvious in their paintings if they can't. The lack of design and structure.
The bead is how decorators paint walls. I never thought about that concept in watercolor. I’ll try this soon.
This video has given me a lot to think about, as always. It’s like the man asks
“ How do you eat an elephant “ the answer
“ One bite at a time”.
You always give out easily digestible
“ bites” that will add to the whole later. Thank you!
I watched him paint in France and he has a much higher angle (almost 90 degrees) than you think. His speed also gives him an artistic advantage. Great video Matt.
JZ is one of the greatest watercolourists of all time.

Your instructions are always so good-clear and concise. I do try to follow the bead but it’s not always as easy as you make it look. There has been improvement though, and I actually liked my last painting (#63 of my Bad Painting Series😂). Being partial to fuzzy faces (my dogs and my hubby), I like your new look. It’s really coming along-follow the beard!😂
thanks for continuing to develop the Zbukvic method. I think he's one of the best WC artist. Love his style.

I’m only a hobby painter but enjoy it immensely. I have seen Joseph mention Mr. Bead many times but apparently it didn’t click. You mentioned it and for whatever reason it clicked! I tried it straight away and of course it worked! Thanks so much and I think I might be on track now.

I’ve watched great painters painting and many of them use the bead technique; actually, their brushes are loaded with lots of water, what really freaks me out, and that makes it possible to refresh edges, mend subjects and colors together. These artists are not afraid of paints running down the paper and somehow they turn that”messy” quantity of water into shapes and shades that make a lot of sense; finally, that’s why it requires a lot of training, it has to be quick and sharp.

That’s the technique for painting animation cells there it’s referred to as puddling.

I understand the idea of the bead and love how the paint mingles when using it. But if your board is a 30%, the bead will always build at the bottom of the area you are working on. But if you’re working left to right, how do you pick up that bead?
That’s how you paint a car also. Follow the wet. Makes sense
