The other artist is Li Yugang, who is a singer with the Chinese National Opera. He specialises in "nan dan" role, which is a male who plays a female role in Peking opera.

The other guy is LiYugang. He is a highly trained opera singer that specialises in female parts in the Peking opera. Until 1991 Kazakhstan belonged to the Soviet Union. Then it became independent. Today Kazakh but also Russian are official languages of Kazakhstan. The writing are still in Cyrillic but the government decided to use the roman way of writing within the next years (2025).
Dimash speaks Kazakh and Russian and is studying Chinese and English.
The other singer is Li Yugang, I guess...

Love this duet and thank you for the reaction🙏his singing partner Li Yugang is a pro and performing at the Chinese Being opera (singing and performing in a women voice called Nan dan). They performing in fact a play by singing it, Dimash is the king and Li is the Concubine. Your face on the mask and sweater is funny👏the other dears explained your question of how many languages he speaks. He can sing in 12 languages.
Haha the dress was definitely a deliberate choice, to show the contrast visually. The music is also showing the contrast of Eastern and Western opera styles along with Dimash's traditional Kazakh music in a pentotonic scale.

* plays several musicinstruments
* wrote own music for several songs
* with his MV Qairan Elim, he shows us his MV-director skills
* he plays a crucial role in arranging his songs
* has a big knowledge of music science because of his studies during the last 21 years of his life (Broadway musicals, classical music and singing, pop and jazz and composition...
* he is high educated in literature and history, so he understands very well the quality of lyrics...

back story of the song is about the emperor of the Tang dynasty and his beloved concubine, the most beautiful lady in the country, Yang Gui Fei. Dimash is singing the emperor part, and Li Yugang which trained in traditional opera for female role is the Yang Gui Fei.

In Drunken Concubine Dimash and Li Yu Gang, present us by way of dialogue, the tragic love story between a famous Concubine (represented by Li Yu Gang) of the Chinese imperial court and the emperor (represented by Dimash) for that reason the two thrones in the stage. The Concubine dies poisoned as a result of the intrigues of enemies in the imperial court. The emperor is sentencing the Concubine to death (the vocal fry part)The Concubine reminds the Emperor of happy times together but does not change the outcome, the death of the Concubine.

Dimash's native language is Kazakh and he speaks Russian perfectly, although with a small accent.

Dear Frank, this duo is superb!! On one side Dimash is a god of vocals, may be his absolute pitch makes him know exactly how to improvise and use different vocal resources in the precise moment of the song. On the other, I really admire Li Yugan because he doesnt have formal training but his professional level demonstrates he is an artist by nature. Li developed his act borrowing nan dan (male playing female roles) movements (hands and legs) and singing (in this case like meows) art forms from Peking Opera giving the traditional art a modern edge. In this performance Dimash plays The King and Li plays the Concubine which is a famous opera. My next suggestion would be Swan goose, another great Dimash duo with Tengri. Traditional music and instrumentation are magic!

one thing I find Dimash is that he can accommodate his partner every time and sing accodingly.
He doesn’t speak Chinese. Therefore he always has a translator with him when he is speaking to a Chinese audience. Of course since he stayed there for almost a couple of years he knows a little bit of basic stuff in Chinese, but not enough to say he “speaks” it......Since he is from Kazakhstan, an ex-USSR country, his mother tongues are both Kazakh and Russian, so those two languages are the only ones he is truly fluent in. He speaks some English and is still improving it, keeps on working on it

Dimash's native language is Kazakh, it is Turkic group languages. The difference like between Italian and Spanish. However, as we were part of Soviets all people in KZ speak Russian as well.
This video marries 'Diva Dance' with 'Drunken Concubine'. Dimash is singing as the Emperor, and Li Yugang is singing the concubine part (he is well known in Peking Opera for singing the female roles. It is traditional for men to sing these parts.) The Emperor had several great times with the concubine where they got drunk etc. Here the Emperor is passing a death sentence on her, and she reminds him of the times that they had together. He wishes that he could get drunk with her one more time. (that's as much as I know about it).

There are two official languages in Kazakhstan: Kazakh and Russian. They're almost equally divided in actual usage with Russian slightly ahead. They sound very similar. He is learning Mandarin and English, and making much faster progress in English. The other singer is Li Yugang, who sings female roles in traditional Chinese opera.

There was a period of time under the Soviets that the Kazakh language was unacceptable. Now, Kazakh is back and is used as the everyday language, while Russian remains the language of commerce. Dimash grew up fluent in both. He is now studying both Chinese and English, and is trained to sing in 12 languages.
Li Yugang, the other voice here, is a highly trained, very popular Peking opera star... known for his portrayal of female roles. So, yes, his voice is presented in female tones. I did some snooping around on Google and he apparently does some Mandopop cross-over stuff as well - so this performance is squarely within his game.

FRANK, Kazakhstan was Russian territory until 30 or 35 years ago, I don't remember well, I think that in 1991 Kazakhstan became independent from Russia, therefore Dimash speaks Russian and Kazakh.
